Entry #8 - '80s Drow

For the "Fantasy" studio, I decided to paint up some early 1980s (pre-slotta) Citadel Drow. They'd been sitting unpainted in my collection for about 40 years, so it was about time they got some love.

I've got one more studio to do before plonking myself down in the Director's Chair and being given a fiendish task by the Show Lord; I suspect that task will be to crack on and paint the 28mm Type S scout Courier which was meant to be my main focus for this year's Challenge. As that job will take me several weeks, I will paint up a few odd figures each week, if only to have something to post.

Wednesday Workbench 01 February 2023

 

The Gallic cavalry are almost done, with just a quick drybrush and adding static grass left to finish the basing - a job for tomorrow morning.

While waiting for the basing steps to dry, I've made a start on a trio of figures for the Fantasy studio:

I've got the base colours down on all of them and will be finishing them off tomorrow.

This week saw my 6th submission for AHPC XIII, a bunch of 15mm cavalry for my Early Imperial Roman army.

Wednesday Workbench 25 January 2023

 

I've reached the slow-point with this batch of figures - basing. At least I only have the drybrushing and static grass left to do, so they will be finished tomorrow. 

You may be thinking "there aren't as many cavalry figures in that photo as you showed last week", and you'd be right. Given the time that basing was going to take (mostly due to slower drying at this time of year), I realised after finishing the Romans that I wouldn't be able to get the Gallic cavalry done in time. Their horses are finished, so it's just the riders that need painting, so they will be submitted next week.

I've also primed a few figures for the next studio visit, but I'm unlikely to get any of them painted in time to submit this week.

I've finished painting a handful of figures for the next two studio locations I'm visiting (High Adventure and  Westerns) - no progress pics on those. I've started work on a load of 15mm cavalry - these were prepped and primed for last year's Challenge, but I didn't have time for them then and never got round to painting them until now.

The first two strips are some Numidian cavalry which I'll be submitting for the "Swords & Sandals" studio; the next 16 figures are some more Roman cavalry and the final 16 are Gallic cavalry. These are all for my Early Imperial Roman army. They could all be submitted for "Swords & Sandals", but I can only finish a few in time for submission on friday, so I'm going to focus on the Numidians; the Roman and Gallic cavalry will get submitted next week as a non-studio entry.

AHPC XII 10th Entry - Early Imperial Romans

For my 10th submission, I painted up some 15mm Early Imperial Roman Legionaries and auxiliary archers to add to the force I painted up last year. I now have enough to filed the army for Art de la Guerre.

This was just a small entry, worth 84 points (plus the 6 bonus points Curt gave me for the hand-painted shields).

We're now into the final three weeks of the Challenge and I expect to be very busy - I think that I've got another eight posts to paint stuff for (some of it will appear in more than one post for story-telling purposes).

Wednesday Workbench 23 February 2022

 

As you can see, I have a couple of projects on the workbench right now. The figures are some 15mm Early Imperial Romans:

I took the photo a few hours ago and have since done a bit more work on them. The only item left to so is highlighting the steel. I'll do that first thing tomorrow, then they can be varnished at some point during the day and stuck onto bases.

I've also been working on the remaining bits of the SciFi shopping centre:

I got most of the zenithal priming done yesterday, finishing it off this morning. This afternoon I blocked in the main colours using the airbrush. I'll start work on the detailing tomorrow.

I've started work on the next batch of figures. I'm alternating weeks - one week will be a chunk of WW2 Japanese; the next week will be something else.

I'm currently well ahead of schedule for achieving my 1300 points target, so if I finish a batch early, I can use the "spare" days to work on things for my final few entries.

Wednesday Workbench 26 January 2022

 

I've got a couple of things on the go at the moment. I've finished painting the 15mm cavalry, varnished them, popped them off their painting sticks and glued them onto bases. 

I'll be adding basing texture tomorrow, but they'll need time to dry so that probably means it'll be Friday that I get to add static grass to finish them.

I've also part-filled the two "planters" from the MDF Plaza kit with a bit of 10mm blue foam in the bottom and then some texture paste over it.

At the back you can see something that I've been working on for the past week or so. It's some of the "Crashed Starship" terrain from Blotz. Over the next couple of days I will be airbrushing and weathering it.

I finished the Japanese last night, took photos today and have submitted the post in good time for publication tomorrow.

With that out of the way, what's on the workbench now?

Some 15mm cavalry is what! So far I've done the base colours on the horses; later tonight I'll apply the wash and should finish detailing them tomorrow. Then it will be on to the riders. If all goes well, these will be finished by Thursday.

But what's in those bags? Ahhh, that's something I started work on a couple of days ago, but you'll just have to wait until they're done to see.

During the week I placed a couple of orders and they both arrived this afternoon:

Some paints from SnM Stuff and some goodies from Warlord.

Another pack for Mega City One and some reinforcements for my Japanese. The other pack above the tank? Errmmm, well, that's for a secret project.

While I was taking photos of the Japanese earlier today, I also took the opportunity to take photos ofthe MDF terrain I'd assembled in something resembling a layout:

That's a very cramped 80cm x 60cm. I had thought I might want to order some extra pre-fab buildings, but it looks as though I might not need them.

AHPC XII 3rd Entry - 15mm Ancient Germans

 

I managed to finish the basing on the ancient Germans in plenty of time to submit them yesterday. They got posted last night: linky-link.

In terms of scoring, these have put me back on track for my target of 1300 points, making up for the lack of work done over the holiday period.

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to finish the Japanese in time to submit them yesterday - I was waiting for the basing to dry before matte varnishing them, but it didn't happen in time so I did the varnishing this morning.

Wednesday Workbench 12 January 2022

 

In my post on Monday I did mention that I'd just started work on quite a lot of 15mm figures. In fact, 139 of them (although as they are from Lancashire Games older ranges, I expect a few casualties before they are based - weak ankles and hand/weapon joins).

This lot are ancient Germans to beef up my army to ADLG size.

I'm very nearly finished with the painting - just leather details, flesh highlights and metallic details to go before a final wash and then varnishing. 

There is a hitch that might see them not submitted for Sunday - I forgot that I was out of the size of bases that I need for them. As Tiny Tin Troops are no longer selling pre-magnetised bases, I placed an order with Warbases. I then realised I am also out of self-adhesive magnetic sheet, so I ordered a pack of that along with a pack of self-adhesive flexo-metal to line storage boxes.

The magnetic sheet and flexo-metal have arrived. I'm hopeful that the Warbases order will arrive before the weekend.

Figure prep is going well. In the photo above you can see the figures I've got done since Wednesday, and some that I'm still working on.

Eureka 28mm Japanese:

I just need one more riflemen from them to have a full Eureka squad. The chap on the hex base will be the platoon sergeant; the one on the square base will be the squad corporal. I do need to order a few more figures from Eureka anyway, so adding a single rifleman won't be an issue.

15mm Mongols and Georgians/Armenians:

The top 2 rows are a mix of "knights" to use as Georgian/Armenian heavy cavalry. the rest are Mongol medium cavalry as I need to beef up that part of my army.

TAG 28mm Japanese:

I've started the prep on these and should get them finished tomorrow if there is good daylight.

As the daylight wasn't very good yesterday, I did some priming instead:

That's the ancient Germans done. I've checked and I don't need to order any more as I have enough here to fill out my heavy infantry needs and add a few bases of medium infantry as well.

I ran out of the red-brown primer on the very last figure - I've placed an order for some more.

I also glued the Warlord 28mm Japanese onto bases:

That's it for today. Hopefully I should get all the figure prep done by Wednesday and the priming done by the weekend. For the 28mm Japanese, I'll need to add basing gunk before priming though - that's a job I can do on days when the light isn't good enough for prepping.

And they're done, at last! They took me a bit longer to complete than they should have, but at least they did get me back to painting figures after my sojourn making terrain.

Here is a photo of a base from each "unit" with one from the first unit painted a few years ago:

As you can see, I've kept the same three main colours (blue, magenta, orange) for their clothing, but used for different parts.

Due to pack sizes, I have ended up with two spare figures:

I'll probably use those for a baggage camp base.

All figures are 15mm from Old Glory 15s (purchased through Timecast).

I haven't decided what will be next up on the paint table. I'll have to have a rifle through the piles tomorrow.
