About Me

A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

AHPC X Day 75 - Eighteenth and Nineteenth Entries - More Pulp

Two entries got posted this evening.

My eighteenth submission were some additions to Doyle's Dockers, including the man himself: [link]

My nineteenth were some down and out civvies for my Salutesville pulp project: [link]

As it's a Wednesday I would normally be writing a "workbench" post, but as what I'm working on is hush-hush I can't. You'll only have to wait a day or two to see them though as it's only a handful of figures.

Saturday Workbench

Yet again a few days pass without a post from me. That's the trouble with this period, the lull before the storm - nowt to post most of the time. I have been busy though, as you will see below!

Latex Rivers from Early War Miniatures

Well, "flowing streams" as the company call them...

I finally got round to painting them up this week and flocked the banks this afternoon. I think they've come out quite nicely.

I might add some tufts and clump foliage at some point but they'll do for now.

Figure Prep - Salutesville

I've also been working on the basing of the mass of figures I've prepped for Salutesville. A few weeks back I added Milliput to some figures' bases and some coarse pumice gel to a few others (the ones which will be on rough ground). I got round to carving the Milliput this week to give a coarse woodgrain effect as well as filing down the excess at the edges. Whilst doing that I found that the Milliput hadn't fully mixed in some places - I think it had gone off, so I ditched it and bought some new (standard rather than terracotta). I've used that to build up the bases of a decent bunch of figures last night and this afternoon.

There was a little bit of Milliput left over this afternoon, so I decided to make some sandbags for Ray, just in case he runs out (as if!) during the Challenge.

I've got 24 more figures to add Milliput to. I'll probably do those tomorrow.

Jailbirds

I also prepped and assembled the Raging Heroes "Jailbirds" character figures I bought recently. I decided that I wanted these to be a bit special, so I had decided to put them on the resin bases I bought last week. That meant pinning them in place. And then doing the fiddly assembly.

Blondie

Mad Nurse Bernadette (or is that Docherty?)

Punky

Harry the Hippo

The fifth member of the group was almost a disaster - her right arm disappeared at some point. Luckily I had a spare arm from Punky which I was able to use, but it did mean having to do some other conversion work - cutting the hand and foregrip off the flamer and adding a strap made from slivers of 0.25mm plasticard. I think it came out OK in the end:

(Oh No! it's...) Yoko

This crew should be a fun test of my painting skills. Quite a bit of work to do though with all the different bits on the bases.

Tomorrow is going to see me doing a lot of priming with the airbrush.

Army Review : 28mm Mob Wars - Salutesville's Finest

I've decided to jump around a bit between periods to break things up a little, so today is the first of my Salutesville posts. Simply because I took pics of them first, I'll kick off with Salutesville's "Finest", the Police. It's also a good opportunity to show off some of the buildings and diecast vehicles in my Mob Wars collection.

"No, honestly - it's just molasses these days..."

Captain Campbell and his favourite toy (the gun, not the gunner!)

Murch Park Precinct

Dixon Dock Station

Blue Moon Street Station

Not diecasts - these are resin & metal from Blue Moon

As they fit in best with the cops, I've chosen to include the other representatives of the forces of Lora Norder in this post:

The G-Men

the Bulls - Salutesville City Penitentiary's correction officers

The figures are a mix of Pulp Figures (cops), Dixon (cops), Blue Moon (cops and G-Men) and Copplestone (the Bulls). The cops will be getting some reinforcements - I've got an armoured car and tank that need a little bit of finishing off, plus there's a harbour patrol launch for them to paint up at some point. There are two more police packs in the Pulp Figures range which I might buy at some point - I'm thinking of doing them as Court officers in grey to distinguish them.

The buildings are from Sarissa Precision apart from the courthouse which is from TT Combat.

Challenge Day 46 - NSL Test Figures and The Rozzers

First up, the NSL. I couldn't face starting the next batch of 6mm ACW last night, so I decided to crack on with priming the NSL figures I'd stuck on bases in the afternoon. You know how it goes - I'll just prime this section of them. Oh, I've got some primer left, I'll prime this lot as well. Oh, not enough primer, I'll pour some more out. Hmmm, that's a lot of primer left over - better prime the next lot.

Before you know it, you've spent 3 hours priming the blooming lot of them.

So, this evening I decided to paint up a pair of test figures to test the colour combination.

The pics show side-by-side the initial paint job with Army Painter strong tone wash, then touched up with the original colours. I think the strong tone was too strong - maybe if I dilute it or use soft tone it would be better. Equally, going back over with the original colours the grey looks too bright.

Let me know your thoughts.

I've still got unit and rank markings to add, which I'll do when I've worked out a scheme for those.

Salutesville's Finest

"If these are Salutesville's Finest, I'd hate to see their worst!"

My 10th entry for the Challenge was a bunch of 28mm cops for my Mob Wars project, along with their transport.

The Vehicles are from Blue Moon's "Highways and Byways" range and the crew figures are also Blue Moon.

I will be adding decals at some point. If you care to take a look at the WIP pics on my blog, you will see that the inside of the back of the panel van has been fully painted.

To prove the crew figures are painted to a similar level to the rest of the cops:

A detachment from Dixon Precinct...

...joining the squad from Murch Precinct

Deputy Chief Campbell* thinks The Untouchables' Jimmy Malone is a pussy. "He brings a knife, you bring a heavy machine gun. That's the Salutesville way."

*Named in honour of the Snowlord, as he has his work cut out doing such an excellent job of policing the hoodlums of the Challenge Mob.

You may have guessed from the precinct names that the first 4 cops are from Dixon Miniatures with the last eight being from Pulp Figures.

The paving slab bases were sculpted by me from Milliput so that they'd fit in with my earlier Blue Moon cops.

This entry netted me 105 points; enough to put me comfortably ahead of Alan (until today - his Seljuks have put him just ahead of me), but not enough to catch Ian.

Challenge Day 42 - Starting 6mm ACW

This evening has seen me:
1) Varnish the cops
2) Glue the drivers/passengers into the cop cars
3) Start work on the next project

Yes, onto the next project, which is my 6mm ACW armies. I'm starting with a test batch of 4 bases of Union infantry.

I've come to the conclusion that the blues I was using for the jackets and trousers are too light, so the rest will be painted using darker shades. For these, I've darkened them with a wash of cobalt blue ink. That will need a while to dry, so I probably won't get anything more done tonight.

Tomorrow evening will see me make a determined effort to finish painting them so that I can get the basing done in time to submit them on Saturday.

With hindsight, perhaps I should have just done two bases-worth as a test batch - that would have been just enough for me to overtake Ian.

So, with another hour or so before I go to bed, I guess I should do some work on the cops' vehicles to ensure that they are finished in time!

Challenge Day 41 - Cops WIP #2

Remember that I said "No new armies"? Well, I've stuck to that (it is early days!). However, I never said "no new shinies" and I have placed an order this evening for some figures from Hasslefree. One of the figures will be my Curtgelb; the rest will be for myself and for my 3rd Blogday giveaway - I hadn't forgotten that event. The giveaway will be announced when the figures arrive.

I've done a little bit of work this evening on the cops, making a start on the flesh. I'll finish that off shortly and then do the hair and some tidying-up of the uniforms. After that I'll do the leather equipment (including cap peaks) and metals. If I have time, I'll do the final steps on the basing. Tomorrow I'll be able to do the varnishing and finish off the vehicles.

Just so you know, I'm only painting the eyes of the Captain
