Sketching A Post Out

It has been a long time since I've made a post about sketch cards. It has been a long time since I have looked for or even bought any. The cards in this post I have been meaning to post about for some time since I have had them for 10-11 years. My criteria for sketch cards is generally first their appearance and that includes the quality of the art work and the price. Just like regular cards I don't like the super high prices that many ask for any card let alone a semi rare art card. Back when I used to hunt for sketch cards a decade ago. Many of them were just that a SKETCH card, usually one of a kind and often they were in just pencil or uncolored black pen & ink. Then some of the artists colored in their work and often they would make print copies to sell so they could keep their original art. I don't mind photocopies if they look OK and if I know upon purchase that they are prints. Anyway that is more than enough talk, time to show the cards. Oh one of these cards I have another sketch card by the same artist whose full name I do not know. In a previous post I mentioned another card by the artist named "Phil" whom I can't make out the last name.

So let me start by showing this second card by the artist "Phil" this is one of two sketch cards I have with Pauley Perrette as her character Abby Sciuto. It is also one of two sketch cards I'm showing that have a gold sticker "sealing" the card as a "Limited Edition Collectors Series". Back in the day I loved getting them for the gold seal to show they were sort of authentic, but if you really think about it, it doesn't make them any more special, as often the seal can be worn or damaged negating the whole specialness of them.

2012? Sketch card NCIS canvas prints Pauley Perrette as Abby Sciuto by Phil #200/250

Next the other "sealed" card from a similar series probably commissioned by the same Ebay seller from the Doctor Who canvas prints series we have Matt Smith as The 11th Doctor floating with his TARDIS by Michael Celona.

Now the other Abby Sciuto sketch card this time by artist David Coalburn this one seems to be a print and it is numbered to only 25 and is dated 2012.

The final card is another print numbered to 25 by artist David Coalburn this time the subject is Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman.

Trade Pile 001: Card 5 A Chrome Tampa Bay Ray

Trade Pile 001:
Card 5: A 2015 Topps Chrome Ray
31 Oct 2022

Adding another card to the pile it is now a  poker hand. Not to shabby.

Top of The Pile:
2015 Topps Chrome Baseball:
59 Kevin Kiermaier Tampa Bay Rays

The rest of the Pile:
1989 Topps Baseball:
373 Tracy Jones Expos

1991 Topps Cracker Jack Mini (Micro) Baseball:
17 Mark Langston Angels
Yes this one is creased some.
(image obviously not to scale)

2011 Topps Opening Day Baseball:
ODS-3 Alex Rodriguez Yankees

2016 Bowman Draft - Chrome Baseball:
BDC-29 Justin Dunn Mets

The concept is simple I will post a card or cards I have up for trade and the first person to claim the "pile" in this post's comments will receive them all. The golden rule with this is that you must offer at least one card off of my wantlists. See My Master Want List on this blog or My Wantlist at TCDB (Collection -> Main Collection -> scroll to Wantlist, select sport category) If you don't have a card off of my lists I will also accept Pre 1987 Vintage Baseball or Football. Also Non-Sport from 1960s to 1970s. Please let me know what you intend to send.

After awhile I will add another card or two to the "Pile" (or "Stack") of unclaimed cards until the pile gets claimed.

Trade Pile 001: Card 2 Lenticular Opening Day Star

 Trade Pile 001:
Card 2: Lenticular Opening Day Star
31 Jul 2022
As expected just one card doesn't seem to do it. So time to add another. Now the lucky claimant gets 2 cards and they only have to send one. Of course more cards can be sent but only one is required.

Hmm should I mix it up with other sports and maybe some non-sport or keep this baseball only? Maybe I could juggle a few of these things at once?

Top of The Pile:
Upping the stakes some by adding a superstar, bold early move I know. This card I pulled from a pack of 2011 Topps Opening Day Baseball way back when. It is from the Opening Day Stars insert set. They are those lenticular flickering "Sportflix" type cards.

Edit: I had to adjust the post date because it had been marked as being posted 4 weeks previously on 03 July at noon. I didn't post until sometime in the evening of 31 July. The post for my Curly W Blog was at 8:06 PM. I think I may have posted this before that post. I forget the order I did them in. So It might have been posted between 7:45 PM 31 July to sometime around 8:15 PM 31 July 2022. So I'll mark it as 8:00 PM 31 July.

Golden Flying Hall Of Fame Ram

OK so the title of this post is a little vague but hints somewhat about the player. This is a case of a very well known player who played 99% of his career on one team and then in his final season played for another team before calling it quits. As a result there are no trading cards from his playing days showing him in the second team uniform. It doesn't help that he only started 4 games his final season.

So Who is this mystery player? It is none other than "Broadway" Joe Namath. Who finished off his NFL career playing for the Los Angeles Rams with a wimper. So "Hollywood" Joe wasn't as successful as "Broadway" Joe.

Here is one of the rare cards that shows "Hollywood" Joe in his Rams uniform. It is from the 2011 Panini Gold Standard Football set. The "Black Gold" variant that is serial numbered to only 10. I wish the picture on the front was in color instead of the black and white. I think Panini did that for all the cards in this set. The whole showing "Legends" in glorious Black and White to make them seem more vintage I guess. I probably should try to get the other variants of this card sometime.

ENJOY.

WWE Eve Sportlots Quarter Card

I don't normally collect wrestling cards, WWE or Mixed Martial Arts MMA, MME cards but I do like beautiful women and scantily clad and leather clad lady wrestlers. So there is that I guess. Anyway while checking the 1, 2, 3 auctions at Sportlots I saw this card and bid on it and won it for the quarter starting price. I liked the photo for some reason That is all there is no special reason. I don't follow wrestling. This card is 11 years old and the wrestler on it retired back in 2013 two years after this card was released. OH Well.

NCIS Rittenhouse Promo Cards

OK this is another very last minute day of the month type posts. I scanned the images of the cards in this post last night 30 March 2021 and  then did the drafting, writing of this post later today Wednesday 31 March 2021. An odd note: when I first started scanning the 4 promo cards (Oops Spoiler of what the post is about. LOL) for some reason my scanner was set for "automatic" scanning and I saw the rarely seen (by me) automatic scanning screens. I first was alerted when I saw the scanner's beginning prep screen was different than normal and was saying it was scanning image 1/3. UGH. It also had a note saying the scanner was in automatic mode and if you wanted to operate in manual mode hit "cancel". I probably should have kept the first scan image to show but I didn't. The scanner made 3 scans of the 4 cards laid out on my scanner's glass bed 2x2. The first image was of 2 cards one from the top row and one the bottom row since the cards were not properly squared on the bed they were at an odd angle and the scan only had partial images of the two skewed  cards. The other two scans were just of one card each and were well cropped and sized images of those cards that I could have used if I wished. Anyway I then started the scanner up again and switched to manual mode which I am used to and where I can make adjustments to how the scanner is scanning the images.

As you may have guessed from the title of this post and the top image this post is about the promo cards from the television show NCIS. The cards are from 2012 made by Rittenhouse. I do not have the set nor any of the star's autograph cards. I do have the Gibbs and Abby box topper cards that I blogged about ages upon ages ago. I don't have any other inserts other than these promo cards that I will now show. The second promo card P2 was from the trade magazine Non-Sport Update which I got from my copy of the magazine and was at one time the only promo card I had from this series. I then hit Ebay to acquire the other 3 cards and a dupe. Since I have the dupe I either got a full 4 card promo set or I got a couple of lots of one or two cards to get all 4. On a side note I do have the JAG set, a promo card from that set, and some auto cards from that set. I plan on someday blogging about those, but trying to decide how much of the set to scan and show.

Anyway lets see these cards: I have also noted how the promos were distributed according to Cardboard Connection

That is it for now guys and gals.

Return of the Bullpen Cart

OK this is ancient news since it happened back in 2018. For some baseball fans it isn't anything special to write about, but to some old-timers like myself it reaches back to our childhoods. I'm talking about the bullpen carts, modified golf carts designed to look like a motorized batting helmet. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s the MLB had bullpen carts to escort relief pitchers onto the field. Actually now-days they drive around the warning track. They probably did that back then as well, my recollection of them are more vivid because of the plastic toys of the time. More so the NFL helmet carts which were the carts they drive onto the field to take severely injured players off the field. The football carts of course had that full football helmet design. Back in the day the baseball carts were more shaped like a baseball cap and the carts for both sports looked a bit bulky.

So for the 2018 baseball season the bullpen cart returned. The design uses a batting helmet for the main body and the support bars are shaped like bats. The Arizona Diamondbacks were the team to debut the new wave of bullpen carts. If memory serves it was the Washington Nationals then closer Sean Doolittle who was the first pitcher to use it. Maybe he was the first visiting pitcher.

Long story short Topps made a Topps Now card to celebrate the event (there is even an Allen & Ginter card that I plan on getting) I eventually got it. I waited way too long to get it at the original under ten dollars prices. I even went through a period of it not being available on Ebay for a few months. When it finally did come back the prices were super high, higher than I like to pay. Anyway I eventually paid $15 for a copy. I almost had to go up to $20 or more. Also of interest with this card is the seller sent the Topps Now packet "case" the cards come in when you get them directly from Topps and not from some dealer who has already opened the pack to scan the card for their listings.

So here is the card:

COTW: Michelle Wie RC

2014 Upper Deck SP Game Used Golf: R59 Michelle Wie

In this episode of Card Of The Whenever I go to a sport that I am not an avid fan of - Golf. The only thing about golf that I really like or enjoy about the sport is Mini Golf. Even that I haven't done in years and years. Partly because my area doesn't have any Putt-Putt mini golf courses anymore.

Back to the card. I don't recall where I got this one or for how much. I know it wouldn't be for too much. I think I got it solely because the player Michelle Wie is a golf babe. That being said this particular card doesn't show off her sexuality.

On The Trading Card Database it was hard to find this card because it is in some sort of Rookie Cards insert set called "Retro Rookies". Oh and it is marked as being a 2014 set. At the time I was looking for it on TCDB I had no idea the set had inserts let alone that it was released the year after the copyright date on the card. I'm fairly sure the set is one of those where the base cards like this one were intended to be sent to the golfers to get autographed.

Anyway here is the card for this month's quick and dirty get it posted before the month ends end of the month post.

Topps Now: Harper Now

I did a little Topps Now splurging on Ebay a little while back. I purchased a total of 8 Topps Now cards from this year and last year. The ones from last year I've been sitting on for a little bit. You could say they were all technically Washington Nationals related, but yeah, technically these cards I'm about to show are not Nats cards they are Phillies cards with Bryce Harper. Huh? Oh yeah that tiny contract thing.

Now that Bryce is on a different team any new cards of him I get in his Philly uniform I'll yak about here on this my main blog. Old Nats Hawper cards I'll chat about on my Curly W Cards blog. I suppose I could also post the Harper Phillies cards on my Nats blog but I don't want to. Occasionally I will post Nats Alumni in team uniforms from their post-Nationals career, but I probably shouldn't. Then again these are my blogs my rules.

Before I get into the two new Harper Now cards I'll show the two copies of the technically first Bryce Harper as a Phillie card. Another blogger showed a new Bowman card which is the first released in packs product so he considers that one Harper's Philly debut card I hear that one is another dang super short print. UGH first 2012 Topps Archives SSP RC and now this? ACK! Anyway my "first" Bryce as a Phillie card I posted about on Curly W Cards when I ordered the two copies and gave the pertinent details of the order. The images I showed there were from the Ebay listing the images here are the actual copies in hand.

I might eventually purge down to just one copy someday.

2019 Topps Now Baseball: ST-3 Bryce Harper Phillies

Now onto the other Now cards. Both I got from Ebay two different sellers. The first one is his Spring Training Debut with the Phillies I got for $7.50 Free Shipping.

2019 Topps Now Baseball: ST-4 Bryce Harper Phillies

The other card I got for $8.00 Free Shipping it is from the regular season. Harper's First Home Run as a Phillie.

2019 Topps Now Baseball: 24 Bryce Harper Phillies

I don't like the Now backs with no description of the event. Sometimes the card title on the front is not enough. And NO I will not pursue Bryce's "First Homer vs The Nationals" or "First Grand Slam vs Old Team".  You have to draw lines somewhere sometimes.

In some cases I might just feel like giving the cards away to a good home that will appreciate them. Not that I don't appreciate them, but the cards I list no longer fit into the scope of my collection. I don't "trash" cards anymore. It makes me cringe when I hear people talking about throwing trading cards into the garbage. If I can't find a home for cards I no longer want, I will have to toss them into the recycle bin. I can't have them cluttering up my trading card hoard.
