Here is the link to my last update from March of 2019. WOW. Somewhere I have a card I got between then and this batch, but I didn't record it here. I'm pretty sure it was in one of my COMC orders. That single card itself didn't get me past the half-way point, and it isn't in the official tally yet. However these six cards from Mom & Pop Cards on Ebay did put my percentage collected over the half-way mark. Yes that is the name of their Ebay store "Mom & Pop Card Shop". Some of their prices are a bit steep but man do they have a great selection of stuff. I also got some football cards from them, but I will only discuss the 1965 Topps Baseball I got from them in this post of course. The prices ranged from $3 to $6 and averaged at $3.83 per card. Not bad and the shipping was FREE.

To the best of my knowledge Chuck Estrada is not related to actor Erik Estrada in any way. When I first saw the back of the card I thought there was some paper loss on the comic image, but it was part of the flames coming off of the fast ball.

On the Trading Card DataBase (TCDB) on their forums there is a thread about collecting goals for 2018. In one of the updates to it I did a little rant about this set build and how slowly it was going. One of the members Bill (aka minibbcards) sent me a PM mentioning he had a few cards from the set and if I would want them. I said yes and sent my mailing address. Long story short he sent 3 cards for this 1965 set build and 2 Team Rookie Star cards from 1970 Topps. All the cards were in great condition even the one 1970 card that has some creasing. Many thinks to Bill in helping me make some progress on this build. Every little bit helps.

Monday 03 Apr 2017:
I ended up winning a Sportlots auction 5 card lot of 1965 Topps Baseball. A week or so ago I had tried for another card lot from the same seller but didn't win that 10 card lot. Both lots the one I won and the one I lost were sight unseen the seller doesn't include scans in his auctions either he doesn't bother or he doesn't have the ability to. I'm thinking the latter. He manages to get his lots sold though. He uses BuyMyCards.net as was evident with the packaging for the lot I received.

Since I had no image to go by and he didn't list the card numbers I was flying blind with this lot. I had feared that I might end up with 5 cards I already had. Fortunately there were only 2 duplicates in the lot. All of the cards were in excellent shape so I might swap these dupes with my previous copies depending on conditions. As I said earlier I had tried for a 10 card lot of '65s but lost that one. This lot I thought I would loose as well especially since the bid went from my original 25¢ bid up to $1.25 fortunately that was the highest it went and I was high bidder. Shipping was also high at $5.00 ouch. I'm guessing a lot of that was the handling via BMCN. The cards were each in penny sleeves. the 5 card lot was sandwiched between two card sized pieces of cardboard (pretty good box cardboard) and sealed in a clear plastic bag/pouch, and that pouch was in a larger plastic "team" sized bag. OH actually I think the "team" bag was a bubble bag that was sealed shut.

One of the pieces of cardboard "bread" had a "BuyMyCards.Net" stamped on it, plus the return address and mailing label had the BMCN on it so I knew where it came from. I'm going to look into that place if all the shipping is done this nicely. So here are the 50+ year old cards for my ancient set build I got.

Accompanying A Strive Set Build 69 Style

As a life-long collector it is odd that there are many many (read most of the damn things) Topps Flagship sets that I still need to complete. Now days with the very short printed super high number cards even base set collecting has become impossible. Many collectors seem to start a set build and then wham bamm they are finished in a year or two with little effort. No matter how much it costs to complete or how many high value cards are in the set. Even if there are a bunch of super short printed cards. Well that is what it seems like to me anyway.

One of my big goals, as readers of this blog may know, is to complete the 1965 Topps Baseball set for my Strive for '65 set build. I'm already over a year and a half behind in that goal. Update to the set build. One of the common themes other than purchasing the cards from a Sportlots auction was that I also got some 1969 Topps Baseball cards to help with that set from yet more Sportlots auctions. I had three packages that had the 1965 and 1969 combo, one had some bonus stuff. Well not technically bonus since they were auctions also, they just hitched a ride on the Hippie '60s Trip. Now the cards in no particular order.

First a three card package the '65 was Marty Keough Reds. The two 1969 cards were 25¢ each:

164 World Series 1968 Game 3: (Tim) McCarver's Homer Puts St. Louis (Cardinals) Ahead

Package two contained eight cards from 5 sportlots 25¢ auctions. [First picture at top of this post] I don't recall the distribution by auction of the seven '65 cards, but it resulted in getting one card duplicated. I also got one card I already had (the previous one of course is in better condition). I think it was a case of the needs of more cards outweighing not needing one card. The lone '69 card in this case is:

The final package only had one lone '65 card the Dave Vineyard (at 25¢) it contained a total of 19 cards from 7 different auctions (but yes the same seller) the shipping costs varied but came to $6.73 the auction prices ranged from 25¢ to $4.75. The grand total was $15.98.

Clowning Around A Little

Last spring training (2015) Comedian/Actor Will Ferrell pulled a publicity stunt for an HBO "Funny or Die" series where he played on 10 MLB teams in the Cactus League in one day. He played all nine positions and had two at bats. The logistics and the "contracts" must have been a nightmare. The ten teams he played for were: Athletics, Mariners, Angels, Cubs, Diamondbacks,  Reds, White Sox, Giants, Dodgers and Padres.

Anyway Topps in their infinite wisdom of all things trading cards made a 10 card Will Ferrell Sub-Set for 2015 Topps Archives Baseball. They also have autograph version of his cards and of course each of the millions of parallels they produce each and every year. Each of his cards is on a different vintage or modern style card. I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue these at first but then I thought OK as long as I don't spend too much on them. It would be nice to get the autograph versions but those like most things card related people are selling for just too damn much. Back in January this year (2016) from Ebay I got the first of the cards from the set for $2.99 + $3.00 shipping. $5 or $6 total is all I want to spend for each card. I might go up to about $10 including shipping but these quite frankly aren't worth more than about $5 each in my book.

As I mentioned last status update post (the first of this kind of post sort of) I did some ordering on Sportlots. The first cards that came in (last Saturday of curse the day my last update was posted) were all from one dealer at $1.00 each. There were five more modern cards with them from the 2003 Topps Bazooka set, but that doesn't matter here for this post. This post and any later posts will only mention cards from the 1965 Set build, even if it was just one card from a box of thousands.
