Washington Wednesday: By The Classic Numbers

Washington Wednesday: By The Classic Numbers
10 Oct 2018

When I first noticed this pair of cards on Ebay I was a little leery of their authenticity. What with the odds of one seller "pulling" these specific numbers from a pack and the sellers other auctions for cards with some of the more sought after serial numbers. D'oh OK so one of the special things about the cards I purchased were they are serial numbered. Another thing that chased the warm fuzzies away was the auction title calling them 1/1s. This seller has a bunch of listings using the 1/1 keyword. Even though the auction title also had the actual serial numbers shown it was titled as a "1/1 lot" indicating each card in the lot is a 1/1. OK semantics I guess. Even with the red flags and warnings going off I decided to grab this pair before anyone else did.

2018 Panini Classics Football: Timeless Tributes Gold: 188 Joe Theismann Redskins #d 07/99 and 99/99

The pair of cards I got are these 2018 Panini Classics Football: Timeless Tributes Gold 188 Joe Theismann Redskins #d 07/99 and 99/99 from Ebay for $14.99 Free Shipping. Like I said the seller titled the auction using their serial numbers and using the old "Ebay One of One" labeling trick. The serial number is on the front hard to see left hand side under the "Classics" logo near the top.

The dealer also sent these 5 Chiefs cards as a bonus. ?Redskins and Chiefs? Guess it is an Alex Smith connection, or the Indians Connection, or the seller just got confused and thought they were all the same team.

That one is vintage so it is a keeper by default.

1974 Topps Football: 34 Elmo Wright Chiefs

Then we have a card from the "Wave of the Future" insert set of 6 cards to the 1994 Fleer Flair Football set. I was going to toss this into the tradebait pile but in checking the player's team history saw he played for the St. Louis Rams in 1998 so it is a keeper.

1994 Fleer Flair Football: Wave of the Future: 3 of 6 Greg Hill Chiefs

Next up one of those annoying "two sided" cards that is a card with two players sharing the card one player on each side. Confusing the collector as to which face is the "front". Not really since this is a serial numbered insert and at the time the serial numbers were put on the back of the card, but that practice varies from company to company and from set to set it seems. I don't normally like this kind of card so again it is one of these was going to toss in the tradebait pile card but one of the players was a Redskin in 2001. The "front" player Donnell Bennett.

2000 Donruss Quantum Leaf Football: Double Team: DT-13
Donnell Bennet and Elvins Grbac Chiefs #d 0475/1500

The final two cards are tradebait and technically are the "same" card. You can't tell from the scans since they are separate scans but one is the mini variant of the other.

2014 Topps Chrome Football: Fantasy Focus: FF-JC Jamaal Charles Chiefs

2014 Topps Chrome Football: Fantasy Focus: Mini FF-J Jamaal Charles Chiefs

Out of five cards I originally didn't want to keep I am keeping 3 of them for now. The vintage one (wasn't ever really tradebait since it's "vintage") will be added to my 1974 set build (if I don't already have it). The other two "keepers" are just keepers for right now.

UPDATE: 10 Mar 2021 - The 2 Jamall Charles cards have been traded away. One a few months ago and the other one just recently.

Washington Wednesday: Have A Coke And A Smile

Have A Coke And A Smile
1981 Topps Coca-Cola Washington Redskins Team Set

Mid to Late January I ordered some small sets from from Larry Fritsch Cards. Included in the order was a set I have been wanting for a while. I think I already had a card or two from this set but it is always nice to have the full thing. For 20 bucks I got the 12 card set of the 1981 Topps Coca-Cola Washington Redskins Team Set. The set consists of 11 player cards and a set title card.

No Number Set Header Title Card
1 Coy Bacon
2 Wilbur Jackson
3 Karl Lorch
4 Rich Milot
5 Art Monk
6 Mark Moseley
7 Mike Nelms
8 Lemar Parrish
9 Joe Theismann
10 Ricky Thomson
11 Joe Washington
The back of the Art Monk card is not miscut. I just had that card too far over to the edge of my scanner and didn't notice until I was cropping the images. I didn't want to rescan it.

Washington Wednesday: 3 Caps and a Joe

Three Caps and a QB

OK first there is still time (I've had to extend it numerous times) to enter my Group Box Break. Just Five more slots (halfway home) and I can make it a real break and not have to break down to Plan B. Do I have to get down on my knees? Do I have to even say what evil diabolical scheme Plan B really is? I don't think you want to know, I don't want to know and I know what it is. It might involve sacrificing some cards to the cardboard gods do you want that to happen? Anyway on to the real subject of this post.

A while back I had gotten some cards from a blog draft that Shane over at Shoebox Legends held. It was loads of fun... hmm I might try doing one of those sometime. I got a bunch of cards from it many of which were my first few choices and excellent additions to my PC. Over at TCC I blogged about what I had gotten I really should gather the cards for a group scan. *Say Cheese!* I got some homie cards out of it (including a couple of Nationals that will be mentioned sometime on my Curly W Cards blog).

2008-9 Upper Deck Hockey Series 2 Young Guns
499 Karl Alzner Capitals
(Front and Back)

Ack the Capitals haven't done too well so far in this abbreviated 2012-2013 Season (really only 2013 Season now). They just lost their home opener to the Winnipeg Jets 4-2. Their first opening home loss since 2000. UGH! 0-2 now.

2009-10 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Young Guns
235 Michal Neuvirth Capitals
(Front and Back)

These other two cards I had gotten from TCC from a forum members package "Chain" that I had started, based on a previous package chain. I'm sure you are familiar with the concept (I think there is some sort of Blog Chain going around but I'm not sure since I'm not in all the blogsphere/blogiverse circles). Basically a collector ships out a package to another collector that is on a predetermined list he created of participants. Upon receiving the package the second collector takes the cards he wants (if any) and replaces the cards he took with other cards, he then sends the package (the remainder of the original contents plus what he added) to a third collector and so on until the last person on the list sends the package back to the original sender. It is sort of like a multiple-team trade. Not many cards in the batch but a few for my PC and then a few cards to add to the next chain package.

Amongst the cards in the chain for my PC were this last Capital Auto card. I tried to adjust the brightness/contrast/gamma to make it better viewable online but since it is one of those chrome silver refractor type cards it doesn't scan to well to begin with and in real-life is pretty dark as well. And yes the autograph is hard to see in reality.

 1999-2000 BAP Millenium Signature Autograph
244 Jamie Huscroft Capitals
(Front and Back)

And this vintage 1970s Redskins card.

1978 Topps Football 416 Joe Theismann Redskins
(Front and Back)

Well that is it until next time. If you have some Washington sports team (Redskins, Nationals, Senators, Capitals, Bullets, Wizards) cards you want to get rid of you can always send them to me (I even do Orioles and Ravens a bit as well).

Washington Wednesday: Wistia Win Two

Second Listia Auction Win

Recently, about a week ago, I won my second auction at Listia. This one "cost" a bit more from the credits standpoint 100 as opposed just 1 from the last one, but from the shipping $ standpoint was FREE.

I wasn't sure if I already had it or not so I went ahead and got it. You see for many years during the 1980s and early 1990s I would get at least the Topps flagship base team set of the Redskins from my LCS for whatever the going rate was. Of course since they are in Silver Spring, MD (The MD City north of the border to DC) they tend to use the "Hometown Inflation" scale for Skins cards that Blogger Dime Box Nick talked about a week or so ago. OK so sometimes I would pay $5 - $10 for about a dozen hand sorted cards instead of maybe $2 but at the time there was no internet to shop for deals on my Homie Team. Anyway I don't think I ever got all the skins from 1980, maybe I did maybe not I'm not sure as my Football card collection is atrocious it is more disorganized than my Baseball is currently and I am actually improving the Baseball organization some (in part thanks to four MONSTER Boxes I had gotten from my LCS one of the last times I had gone there very early this year. My big goal is to go back to mostly binders, but My unorganized hoard collection is a discussion for some other time some other place)

So here it is my second Listia Auction Win:

1980 Topps Football 475 Joe Theismann Redskins
(Front and Back)

Then from Ebay more recently (like today Tuesday 18 DEC 2012) I got another of my Homie QBs my main HQB Sonny J. (Other than current QBs RGIII and Kirk Cousins (My "Kirk Cousin"*)) It was $1.78 + FREE Shipping This card is from this year, I prefer Sonny J. cards from his playing years but I love the Classic Skins Arrow Helmet from the '60s. This one is from the 2012 Topps Football: Quarterback Immortals 19 card subset.

*NO I am not related to Mr. Cousins I just share the same first name so we are cousins in the first name sense.

Vintage Ramskins 3 Feb - Part 1 Topps

This is part one of two posts of some Vintage RamSkins (Rams + Redskins = RamSkins) I got nine cards on 03 February 2012 from one sportlots seller I have dealt with before OK lets get on with the roll call.

First Up Here's Johnny! John Carson, not the late late-night talk show host but rather the Washington Redskin End.

1958 Topps 47 John Carson - Redskins

The cartoon on the back is hard to read. The answer to the question: "What is John Carson's nick-name?" - "Long John because he uses his height to catch passes". The cartoon shows a pirate reaching for a football pass.

1958 Topps 47 John Carson - Redskins (back)

Next up: 1959 Topps 15 Del Shofner - Rams Don't know what to say about this one.

1959 Topps 15 Del Shofner - Rams

The back's scratch off "Magic Answer" looks to be incomplete or it's an order for a Chinese restaurant.

1959 Topps 15 Del Shofner - Rams (back)

OK so at first this card doesn't seem to fit because the player is in a previous team's uniform The Pittsburgh Steelers. 1969 Topps 111 Roy Jefferson - Steelers. Roy became a Redskin in 1971.

1969 Topps 111 Roy Jefferson - Steelers

This next player has a solid strong name for a Tackle Rock.

1969 Topps 146 Walter Rock - Redskins

It's Rookie Time. From 1975 a player who would have his career cut short by a horrible leg injury Joe Theismann. Joe started his pro career in the CFL (Canadian Football League) on the Toronto Argonauts. Although this is Joe's Rookie Topps Card and Rookie NFL card it is not his TRUE Rookie card because he had a 1971 O-Pee-Chee Rookie Card when he debuted with the Argonauts. So Canadians are laughing at us silly American's thinking this is Joe's RC!

1975 Topps 416 Joe Theismann RC- Redskins

That does it for part one. The next post part two the conclusion is the Philadelphia Cards will be posted "tomorrow" in about two hours. Gotta love scheduled posting.

2007 Donruss Classics Redskins fun

On Friday 27 January 2012 I got a card in the mail that I had paid for two days earlier on Ebay for just 99~ + $2.25 shipping. The card is a 2007 Donruss Classics - Classic Singles - Bronze - CS-21 John Riggins (front shown above) serial numbered to 1000. As much as I like Riggo, and these Donruss Classic Singles sub-set cards I can't stand that picture of Riggo. The expression on his face is strange.

This one is a jersey number card as it is #0544/1000.

2007 Donruss Classics - Classic Singles - Bronze - CS-21 John Riggins Back
  (Serial Number 0544/1000)

I have another of this card that I've had for sometime it is #0056/1000.

2007 Donruss Classics - Classic Singles - Bronze - CS-21 John Riggins Back
  (Serial Number 0056/1000)

I have other Classic Singles including this of John's fellow Redskin Joe Theismann serial numbered 0441/1000 which if you add all the numbers up is Sonny Jurgensen's number 9, or you can just take the 44 for Riggo.
