COTW: A 1973 Kellogg's Baseball Met

A 1973 Kellogg's Baseball Met

What time is it? Who cares? It's Whenever, and here is a card of the whenever that I got recently. Actually I am not sure of the exact delivery date because it was in a batch of "held" mail that I received about mid month when I returned from a family business related thing in the Mid-West So it could have arrived as early as Friday 13 Sep or as late as Monday 16 Sep.

It is a 1973 Kellogg's Baseball Card. Now I like most of the Kellogg's 1970s cards, mostly because of the early 1970s 3-D effect. However, this set is not 3-D it is the first set Kellogg's did without the 3-D imaging If I recall. For some reason I don't like this set nearly as much as I do the other Kellogg's sets even if you ignore the whole 3-D thing. Anyway this card is of one of my PC guys I started to collect back in the day as a PC guy before I even knew that PC Player Collecting was even a "thing".

I got it from Sportlots for the opening 25¢ bid plus $2.00 shipping.

Accompanying A Strive Set Build 69 Style

As a life-long collector it is odd that there are many many (read most of the damn things) Topps Flagship sets that I still need to complete. Now days with the very short printed super high number cards even base set collecting has become impossible. Many collectors seem to start a set build and then wham bamm they are finished in a year or two with little effort. No matter how much it costs to complete or how many high value cards are in the set. Even if there are a bunch of super short printed cards. Well that is what it seems like to me anyway.

One of my big goals, as readers of this blog may know, is to complete the 1965 Topps Baseball set for my Strive for '65 set build. I'm already over a year and a half behind in that goal. Update to the set build. One of the common themes other than purchasing the cards from a Sportlots auction was that I also got some 1969 Topps Baseball cards to help with that set from yet more Sportlots auctions. I had three packages that had the 1965 and 1969 combo, one had some bonus stuff. Well not technically bonus since they were auctions also, they just hitched a ride on the Hippie '60s Trip. Now the cards in no particular order.

First a three card package the '65 was Marty Keough Reds. The two 1969 cards were 25¢ each:

4 NL RBI Leaders: Willie McCovey Giants, Ron Santo Cubs and Billy Williams Cubs

164 World Series 1968 Game 3: (Tim) McCarver's Homer Puts St. Louis (Cardinals) Ahead

Package two contained eight cards from 5 sportlots 25¢ auctions. [First picture at top of this post] I don't recall the distribution by auction of the seven '65 cards, but it resulted in getting one card duplicated. I also got one card I already had (the previous one of course is in better condition). I think it was a case of the needs of more cards outweighing not needing one card. The lone '69 card in this case is:

6 NL Home Run Leaders: Willie McCovey Giants, Richie Allen Phillies and Ernie Banks Cubs.

The final package only had one lone '65 card the Dave Vineyard (at 25¢) it contained a total of 19 cards from 7 different auctions (but yes the same seller) the shipping costs varied but came to $6.73 the auction prices ranged from 25¢ to $4.75. The grand total was $15.98.

The 1969 Topps Baseball: 8 cards 3 auctions two were for multiple cards at 25¢ each auction A's team lot and 2 Yankees, 2 Mets and the third auction was for card #12 at $1.25

12 NL Strike Out Leaders: Bob Gibson Cardinals, Fergie Jenkins Cubs, and Bill Singer Yankees

46 Fritz Peterson Yankees
72 Ron Taylor Mets
127 Kevin Collins Mets
143 Joe Mossek Athletics
195 John Odom Athletics
217 John Donaldson Athletics
313 Bill Robinson Yankees

BONUS CARDS: AKA Not '65 nor '69

1967 Philadelphia Gum Football: 1 card $2.25
120 New York Giants Team Card - Team Logo on front.

1982 Kellogg's 3-D Super Stars Baseball: 9 cards 2 auctions one of 4 cards at 25¢ and one 5 cards $4.75 (includes Parker and Cey). All in excellent condition with only a little bent warping.

9 Fernando Valenzuela Dodgers
25 Carlton Fisk White Sox
28 Robin Yount Brewers
46 Ron Cey Dodgers
48 Dave Parker Pirates
52 Chris Chambliss Dodgers
57 Dwayne Murphy Athletics
63 Vida Blue Giants
64 Eddie Murray Orioles

Card Of The Whenever: Deacon Jones Kellogg's Style

1970 Kellogg's Football: Deacon Jones

I love vintage and I really love the Kellogg's 3-D cards from the early 1970s. It is odd because the three-dimensional effect that these Kellogg's cards have is sort of an ancestor of today's Chrome and Refractor cards. I love the vintage 3-D cards but don't like the modern Chrome Refractors much. Weird. Speaking of weird Mr. Jones has a weird look on his face. It is probably just the camera angle on the way he is looking up.

Chronicles of Fuji Contest Cut Plug

I don't normally plug other blogger's contests in part because there are usually too many floating around the Blogverse and in part because it isn't my contest, however, here is a pretty cool contest that I am entering/will have entered. Blogger Fuji of The Chronicles of Fuji is having his 3rd Annual Chronicles of Fuji Contest. The prize packages are totally awesome and include: a 15 card lot of some Kellogg's 3-D cards, 1993 Donruss HOF Heroes Set, 2012 Wax Eye Cereal Killers series 1 set, some graded football cards (OK so that one isn't as awesome in my book), and a card lot that includes some promo cards and Japanese Kitty Cards those maybe weird but the look pretty cool don't cha think?

OK so contest entrants have to work for the prize packages by following some directions and answering questions and maybe some other stuff, but I think it will be worth it or at the very least down right fun.

I'm not sure which of the prize packages I like the most. I like most of them. The graded cards I'm not a huge fan of but the other stuff looks super awesome.

So check it out and enter The Chronicles of Fuji Third Annual Contest

Redman Senators 1953 With Tab

When I was a kid I had heard about Red Man Tobacco cards from the price guides I had picked up at my local card shop (or though the mail) and they even had some on display for $20 and up and that was for the ones without the tab, the ones with the tab were much more. At the time I could only dream of one day picking one maybe two up and spending a fortune. I never thought I would ever be able to afford one with a tab. Well time and the internet has changed all that. Of course I prefer to get the ones that are complete with tab. I will only get these things from places where I can see what I am getting, or that have it in writing that you are getting one with a tab. For some of the bigger named stars I might have to settle for a very poor conditioned without tab.

I currently just have Two* 1953 Red Man cards both Washington Senators, both I purchased from Ebay. The first one I received on 18 December 2009 and purchased for only $10. I didn't note what the shipping was, I don't think it was free but it wasn't more than $2 or $3. It was the first Red Man card I ever owned, and to get one in such decent shape WITH The Tab was a super bonus.

The corners of course are dinged and there are a few very light creases on the front , but over all a very nice specimen.

This second one I received on 16 February 2010 for only $6 Delivered! FREE SHIPPING!

 (Front and Back)

Now I am spoiled with being able to get two nice looking complete cards for such a nice price. It wasn't until I got around to scanning the backs of the cards that I realized the backs all say the exact same thing and have no indication of the card number. I do understand that there are some other offers on the backs of some other cards. I guess I'll have to see when I get other cards from this set then.

NO I don't actually have the vintage unopened pack of Red Man Tobacco. I got the image from robertedwardsauctions website, the card side showed Mickey Vernon also of the Senators. Man I'd love to have that one with the Mikey Vernon card it started at opening bid of $200 and sold for $1,058.

* I have since gotten (25 Feb 2012) a third 1953 Red Man card this one is not a Senator and it does not have the tab and is in pretty awful shape. I got it as part of an 18 card lot of Baseball, Football and 2 Hockey cards ranging from the 1950s to 1970s there were two 1970 Kellogg's Football cards in the mix which was one of the big reasons to get it.. I got the lot from sportlots for a total of 75¢ plus $4.49 postage I got two other lots/auctions from the same seller of about nine 1970 Kellogg's Baseball cards. Four or five of which were in terrible shape.

Here is my third 1953 Red Man Tobacco Baseball card:
