Last Post Of The Year: All Capitals

Well it is that time of the month again, and in addition that time of the year. Goodbye 2022 and Hello 2023.

OK so a quick one this lot of cards came from a Trading Card Database member as a PIF (Pay It Forward) which is TCDBs form of a random act of kindness or as I like to call them "Random Act of Cardness" (RAC). The member sent me 9 Washington Capitals Hockey cards from my want list at the database.

Here they are as a group:

1991-92 Score Hockey:
20 Kevin Hatcher
128 Dino Ciccarelli
1997-98 Pinnacle Hockey:
24 Jan Bulis Rookie
1998-99 Pacific Paramount Hockey:
244 Sergei Gonchar
2000-01 Topps Heritage Hockey:
5 Olaf Kolzig
52 Adam Oates
112 Jeff Halpern
168 Chris Simon
214 Sergei Gonchar

Blogiversary: 10 Years And Still Stumbling

Hey this post was published at a weird time of the day. The reason is it is my 10th Blogiversary for this here Trading Card Blog.

For these special occasions I like to go back to my original posts check the time they were posted and post the anniversary announcement or reboot post at the exact same time of day as the original post instead of my usual High O'Clock Noon posting time. You can see my very first post for this blog here. OH boy there are/were a couple of links to dead websites there, well Zistle technically isn't dead yet but might as well be. My personal website "klandersen.com" though has long been gone. Mostly due to letting the domain name registration for it drop. Long story kind of short: Some years back I let the website domain name registration run out because 1) the company I had originally registered with had been bought by some other company and at the time I couldn't recall which company held the current registration. 2) They refused to recognize my membership info or take my money. A few months to a year or two later some Chinese company bought the domain and it was some weird poetry site written in Chinese for a few years. Eventually they let the domain registration go, but I never got around to renewing it after them since it is a pain do keep track of that and when I am dead and gone it will run out again but that time never renewed and all my info would be completely lost. I toyed with the idea of renewing it, but maintaining a personal website is a lot of work that I don't have time for anymore. Blogging takes up plenty of time I don't have already and I have 3 blogs to maintain.

I did make an edit on the opening post to un-link my website and to make an Edit/Update notice explaining the reason for removing the link. I'm sure I have a ton of other posts that need some similar cleaning up. Some I may get to some day and update others I might never get around to updating.

Just because I like this one.

Oh here are some cards that were released in 2009 to help me celebrate and to make this a post about cards and not my sob story about an abandoned personal website. With one or two exceptions most of these cards I have had since 2009 either from a group box break or an online purchase. I chose these randomly since the only thing I really had planned was the fact I was going to show some cards from 2009.

I don't Think Freud would agree with that.

2009 Topps Allen & Ginter's - 158 Sigmund Freud Psychiatrist

Maybe he'd remind us not to forget the Alamo:
2009 Topps Allen & Ginter's - 108 Alamo Mission Compound

He would also think that women throwing the discus around was some plan to humiliate men.
2009 Topps Allen & Ginter's - 213 Stephanie Brown Trafton Discus Throwing Champion

OK so I didn't plan on making those 2009 Allen & Ginter's cards some kind of tall tale but it worked out that way. Sticking with the retro set idea one of the sets from 2009 I enjoyed was Upper Deck's Goodwin Champions. One of the sets from that year that I have in recent months sort of completed. I have the few remaining cards I need for my set bought at COMC and in my "to be shipped" queue. Ages ago I showed the Alex Ovechkin card (a few times think).

2009 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions - 34 Alex Ovechkin Hockey Washington Capitals
(Ouch one of my older poorly cropped images not corrected by photoscape Sorry)

2009 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions - 101 Cal Ripken Jr Orioles

Next Topps did a similar sort of retro set in the style of the old T206 cards:

2009 Topps T-206 - 21 Ivan Rodriguez Astros

2009 Topps T-206 - 217 Garrett Atkins Rockies

Notice that picture/image of Atkins Topps also used for Allen & Ginter's (at least on this Rip card) Notice though his eyes are different it looks like he is squinting on the 206 card and sort of stunned on the A&G.

2009 Topps Allen & Ginter's - RC43 Garrett Atkins Rockies Rip Card #29/50
I didn't scan the back but Yes I am keeping it unripped. I hate the rip card concept. They need to find a way that the "wrapper" card can be kept in decent condition after being "ripped".

Next We have yet another sort of retro card, this time Heritage which is more a direct updating a 49 year old design with the modern players. Some years Topps did this very well other years they blew it. 2009 I think was a good year:

2009 Topps Heritage - 372 Brian Schneider Mets

Meanwhile O-Pee-Chee does a mean retro card. I love 2009 OPC. I have the Nationals team set, and need to work on the full set, and also the parallel black bordered sets:

2009 O-Pee-Chee - 518 Washington Nationals team card/Checklist

In 2009 Topps had a little fun online. I've mentioned these before. I'm too lazy right now to provide the link to my previous post. ACK I'm not even sure what tags I used for those. Oh Well.

2009 Topps Million Card Giveaway Code Card - TMC-5 Mickey Mantle Yankees

Of course I had to include some mascots right?

Previously Shown:
2009 Disabled American Veterans DAV - 191 Lucky The Beaver Portland Beavers

Previously Shown:
2009 Disabled American Veterans DAV - 123 Uncle Slam Patomac Nationals

2009 Multi-Ad Sports - 29 Sherman Shorebird Mascot Delmarva Shorebirds

OK this last card is a PC player for several reasons first played for one of my fave teams The Rams, secondly he was a super Quarterback and he is also a Similar namesake niche player;

2009 Upper Deck Football: 1 Kurt Warner Cardinals

Card Of The Whenever: Luis Matos Play Ball

2004 Upper Deck Play Ball: 101 Luis Matos Orioles

Have I said I love retro cards? I think it is because I love vintage. I didn't use to love retro cards. I recall the first time I saw the Bowman/Topps Heritage series (I think I saw the Football first at a 7-Eleven) I hated it. I thought a modern reproduction of a vintage design was unoriginal. Well now I love the Heritage series, even if they are not original.

This card is a modern retro shout out to the 1940s Play Ball sets of cards. I don't have any original Play Ball cards, most of them are too expensive even the very poor conditioned ones. I like them now, but at one time I wasn't too keen on their plain looks. Odd because I normally like the plain and simple looks for cards.

So here is the modern 2004 Upper Deck Play Ball card for Luis Matos of the Orioles.
2004 Upper Deck Play Ball Baseball: 101 Luis Matos Orioles
(Front and Back)

I am going to need to start building this set of cards. BTW this is one of the cards I got from 2x3 Heroes Jeff, in a PWE six-pack. I told you I'd probably show some of them off individually.

A 2x3 Six Pack PWE

It pays to sign up for things. Jeff at 2x3 Heroes has a mailing list you can sign up for via a special form link he calls Club PWE. If you don't mind getting base cards of your homie team in a PWE it is worth signing up for. It seems to be totally random depending on Jeff's whim and whatever he has available at the time of that whim. (I should try some sort of form thing sometime if I can figure out how to do it) Anyway it is amazing how six cards can be loaded into a PWE.

Here is the six pack I got:
2007 Bowman Heritage Baseball: 106 Felipe Lopez Nationals
2004 Upper Deck Play Ball Baseball: 101 Luis Matos Orioles
2000 Bowman Baseball: 310 Ryan Minor Orioles
2009 Topps Attax Baseball: No Number Lastings Milledge Nationals (#133 in alphabetical lists)
2011 Topps Heritage Baseball: 186 Rick Ankiel Nationals
1995 Pinnacle Baseball:  188 Brady Anderson Orioles

Thanks for the cards Jeff!

Some of these I might show individually sometime. The Nationals I'll show on my CurlyW Cards blog sometime, maybe separate, maybe as a group.

Blog Group Box Break 1 Plug

A little plug here for my FIRST BLOG Group Box Break. For details and to sign up see my Original Box Break Number 1: Baseball 2007 Post. $20 gets you 1 Chosen team and 1 possibly 2 random teams (dependent on number of people in break). I'd love to see this thing fill up to 10-15 people including myself. The bare minimum I need to get this thing going is 5 (I'll be taking a loss with less than 10 but I don't really care about that now).

Sign-up is OPEN until Saturday 22 December.

Products to be busted:
  • 2007 Bowman
  • 2007 Topps Heritage
  • 2007 Topps Turkey Red
  • 2007 Upper Deck Artifacts
  • 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces
Most of the great teams are still available. These would be guys from the 2006 Season so teams like the AL Champs Tigers, and playoff teams Mets, Athletics, Padres, Dodgers, Twins and Yankees are still open.

Blog Group Box Break Interested?

Well I didn't do a Mascot Monday today. I was lazy over this past weekend and I didn't have any made up in my posting queue. So onto something else for today.

Blog Group Box Break # 1

Lets see if anyone is interested now, I tried this 2 weeks ago with no sign-ups and then had a plug last week to try to drum up business. I was planing on hosting a Group Box Break for my blog. For details see this link. So far no takers. I think this is suffering from too much competition, too small a following, bad timing (Year End Holidays) and not enough publicity . I'm going to try one more time before switching to an alternate plan.

The Original plan is to have a Group Box Break with the following 2007 Baseball products which I have in hand right now and am itching to get open:
  • 2007 Bowman
  • 2007 Topps Heritage
  • 2007 Topps Turkey Red
  • 2007 Upper Deck Artifacts
  • 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces
Can I get a minimum of 9 people? (plus myself is 10)
$20 gets you one team. If 9 people or less sign up everyone gets 2 random teams. If 10-14 people just 1 random team.

Sign up will be open from now until Saturday December 22.

Sorry Nats and Os fans I've taken the Blog Host's Prerogative by claiming those two teams. The Nats are non-negotiable but if it helps get interest I might release the Os.
