Happy Blogiversary To Whatever I Call This Blog With The Long Title

Today marks the 14th Blogiversary of "CaptKirk42's Trading Card Blog"  I am composing, drafting this post a few months early, late April, to make sure I get this posted and don't miss the Blogiversary.

As is my tradition I am timing this post to be published at the same time of day that my very first post on this blog was posted.

Happy Anniversary The Wrapper Magazine


 I was going to make this post my September post, but I decided on the afternoon of the last day of the month (yesterday 30 Sep) to do something else because I wanted to show some cards. This post doesn't show any cards because it talks about a card magazine. So...

October 2023 marks the 45th Anniversary of the non-sport trading card magazine The Wrapper and their current issue #350. The magazine is published quarterly and still has the feel of the late 1970s, early 1980s when it first started. With the exception of the outer covers that usually have 3 colors the magazine is black & white. Very simple format and low budget as it has been self published by the same guy Les Davis.


Each issue starts with a feedback section/news section "Non Sport Talk". Then there are three or four (I haven't actually counted for each issue) nice articles on some non-sport set from the past usually vintage and often sort of rare and sometimes all but forgotten.

Each issue also has a giveaway/contest called "Wrapper Drawing" that I usually forget about a couple of days after skimming through the issue. Some of the prizes I had been interested in, but never got around to entering or sometimes even checking on the entry details.


Most of the content of magazine is ads and sales lists, maybe some of them are want lists of the dealers. There is also a cartoon, comic on the last page that sneaks an advertisement for some monster related thing or the magazine itself. I didn't scan that. The size is usually 70-some pages.


As I said the overall feel of the magazine is the late 1970s low budget homemade newsletter style. It is informative and the writers of the articles for the sets featured are usually quite enjoyable. I forget when I first found the magazine, but I do think some years back I had to look for it again because I had let my original subscription end, forgot about it and thought like many hobby related sources from the 1970s it had ended.

Almost Forgot To Mention (Missed it last year UGH)



Well I almost missed something this year that I missed last year. Good thing I didn't miss it in 2019. What am I talking about? I am talking about the Anniversary or BLOGIVERSARY of this here Trading Card Blog. It has now been 12 years since I started this 2nd blog of mine, the first one to be mostly trading card oriented.

So what? What is so special about 12 years? Ye Got Me.

Blogiversary: 10 Years And Still Stumbling


Hey this post was published at a weird time of the day. The reason is it is my 10th Blogiversary for this here Trading Card Blog.


For these special occasions I like to go back to my original posts check the time they were posted and post the anniversary announcement or reboot post at the exact same time of day as the original post instead of my usual High O'Clock Noon posting time. You can see my very first post for this blog here. OH boy there are/were a couple of links to dead websites there, well Zistle technically isn't dead yet but might as well be. My personal website "klandersen.com" though has long been gone. Mostly due to letting the domain name registration for it drop. Long story kind of short: Some years back I let the website domain name registration run out because 1) the company I had originally registered with had been bought by some other company and at the time I couldn't recall which company held the current registration. 2) They refused to recognize my membership info or take my money. A few months to a year or two later some Chinese company bought the domain and it was some weird poetry site written in Chinese for a few years. Eventually they let the domain registration go, but I never got around to renewing it after them since it is a pain do keep track of that and when I am dead and gone it will run out again but that time never renewed and all my info would be completely lost. I toyed with the idea of renewing it, but maintaining a personal website is a lot of work that I don't have time for anymore. Blogging takes up plenty of time I don't have already and I have 3 blogs to maintain.


I did make an edit on the opening post to un-link my website and to make an Edit/Update notice explaining the reason for removing the link. I'm sure I have a ton of other posts that need some similar cleaning up. Some I may get to some day and update others I might never get around to updating.

Just because I like this one.

Oh here are some cards that were released in 2009 to help me celebrate and to make this a post about cards and not my sob story about an abandoned personal website. With one or two exceptions most of these cards I have had since 2009 either from a group box break or an online purchase. I chose these randomly since the only thing I really had planned was the fact I was going to show some cards from 2009.

I don't Think Freud would agree with that.

OK so I didn't plan on making those 2009 Allen & Ginter's cards some kind of tall tale but it worked out that way. Sticking with the retro set idea one of the sets from 2009 I enjoyed was Upper Deck's Goodwin Champions. One of the sets from that year that I have in recent months sort of completed. I have the few remaining cards I need for my set bought at COMC and in my "to be shipped" queue. Ages ago I showed the Alex Ovechkin card (a few times think).

Notice that picture/image of Atkins Topps also used for Allen & Ginter's (at least on this Rip card) Notice though his eyes are different it looks like he is squinting on the 206 card and sort of stunned on the A&G.

I didn't scan the back but Yes I am keeping it unripped. I hate the rip card concept. They need to find a way that the "wrapper" card can be kept in decent condition after being "ripped".

Next We have yet another sort of retro card, this time Heritage which is more a direct updating a 49 year old design with the modern players. Some years Topps did this very well other years they blew it. 2009 I think was a good year:

Resolutions? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Resolutions!


I'm not a huge New Years resolutions maker. I don't like being one of those phonies that makes some fancy resolution only to fail 3 weeks later. Last year (2015) I had a sort of resolution/goal that went uncompleted my Strive for '65 Topps Baseball set build. Bummed that is not complete. It would have been great to have it done for when I wanted ON the 50th Anniversary. Now it is the 51st Anniversary will I get it completed? Who knows?

For this year (2016) I will continue to pursue that set build, plus from the 2015 Topps Archives Baseball I want at least the 10 Will Ferrell inserts. The base set not the super overpriced autograph versions but the regular base cards. An auto card would be great but I don't see those going for cheap. It seems the only people buying them are those that want to keep it, and those who want to sell it at a high-price. So what else is new? I don't want to spend more than about $5 per card and most of them I have been seeing for $8-10 minimum. So I need all ten of those: (WF-#) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 on my standard real cheap. On Ebay I bid on the A's card (WF-1) $2.99 + $3 shipping since I had planned on bidding on a partial set of the other 9.

Oh and I guess I should try to complete my 2003 Bazooka Joe subset.

I also have two ancient trade commitments maybe more, and three or four lingering promises of sending out contest winnings. So I need to try concentrating on those as well. I'd like to be able to occasionally send out some surprise packages and PWEs.

I really need to get my card hoard organized and put mostly in binders. That or any organizing will take sometime.

Updates: Winners and a group break

UPDATE, UPDATE UPDATE
This post is basically just to update a few things. First I admit I am more than a bit behind in taking care of my end of some trades that I have already received cards from. It makes me feel bad and then I get all depressed and then I look through my card hoard start to go through it and then get tired or distracted. Sorry if you are expecting your end of a trade with me. I'll eventually get around to things I just have the trading part of trading cards thing in low gear right now.

Well here is it April and I am another year older (well technically not til around 2:20pm Saturday the 4th) and did not reach my Strive for '65 goal. In just a little over a year I managed to acquire 118 new cards for the set (116 unique, two were the checklist variants) since I started my goal back in January of last year with only 94 cards from the set. Some I have had since as long as I can remember, others not as long. A few I had only had a few days/weeks before I decided to go for the goal. I now have 210 (212 with variants) 35.5% cards from the set. So I am a little over 1/3 of the way complete and still have 2/3 of the set to get including some of the very expensive Super Stars like The Yankees Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris to name but two. At this rate it will be closer to the 55th Anniversary that I finish the set if ever. WWWWAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

I held a blogiversary contest and am sort of hunting for stuff for the winners/runner-ups. I'm taking my time a little bit because I still haven't heard from two of the winners. Granted the contest was held about 6 months ago and the winners just announced about 2 or 3 weeks ago. So all in all pretty good for a PFC*.

I am also looking for people to fill my Blog Basketball Box Group Break. It is my first Basketball one. Many good teams still available. Sign-Up and join in the fun.


Well I guess that is life in the big city, or rather the suburbs of the big city. On a bright side it looks like I'm just two followers away from having 100 followers. OK we know that technically not all followers still follow and those who are private followers don't always show up in the following count, some people loose interest in the blogs they were following, or loose their internet connections, others change their online accounts and then there are those who sadly have passed away, but the system doesn't know those facts nor does it care. 100 followers is 100 followers, even if only 1 or 2 are still left following.

Contest Procrastination 101: We Have A Winna


Some regular readers of this blog may recall that I held an Anniversary Contest about a million years ago Internet time which is about five to six months ago in real time. YAY ME! Well finally the blog monkeys have ignored tallied all the results and picked a winner. Picked isn't the proper word since it was a landslide win identified is more like it. Since it was my 5th Anniversary I downed a fifth of Rum and randomized 3 runner ups. Wait? What? Wasn't it 4 runner-ups? Well one person made a valiant effort so I decided to award them 1st Runner Up and random the remaining three runner up spots. Now I plead The Fifth on that and Chug-A-Lug the rest of the bottle of *burp* Excuse me Rum. Just kidding about the Rum. On second thought I could have used a bottle for this.

It was a fun contest but I admit I think I was a bit intimidated by having to do all that tallying, so I don't think I'll ever do a contest of this nature again. You really need to keep up with things as they happen. Unfortunately I waited until the final day to say "I'll tally the points up later" intending to do it the next day but kept putting it off and putting it off. You know how that goes.

Before I get to the winner and runner ups here are the answers to the Bonus Questions. Of the 20some entrants only six people attempted the bonus questions. I didn't expect anybody to get Question 1 correct. That was a little cruel on my part, but there were some creative answers I should have awarded bonus points for a few of them but in retrospect those bonus points wouldn't have mattered much unless it was a huge amount of points. Question 2 had several correct responses but nobody got all five correct. A couple of people guessed a related show so I gave them an extra point for that. Questions 3 through 5 also had some correct answers. Question 4 one person got both, and only one person didn't get either show.

The Answers:
Question 1: During my college days I participated in an extra curricular activity. I also had a nickname that was associated with the activity. What was that activity and my nickname?

During my three year attempt at college I majored in BROADCASTING and was a DJ for the school's radio station. During my first on-air shift, (which was a short notice substitution for the regular jock a day or two before my first scheduled shift and I had to be given a Reader's Digest Nickel Tour on the job training session for the equipment) about half an hour into the shift I played "The Ewok Celebration" by Meco. I talked up the song with a Yoda impersonation saying "Yoda says it's time for the Ewoks" and played the entire song, it might have been the extended dance mix. Well the next day during dinner mostly in the cafeteria some of the radio station staff and management called me "Ewok". At first I was a little offended by it and slightly confused. It quickly dawned on me that they thought I was introducing myself as "The Ewok" when I was introducing the song. They continued to call me that and I used "Ewok" as my on-air handle. So the answer is: Broadcasting Radio DJ "Ewok"

Question 2: Top FIVE All-Time Fave TV shows: From a list of  many shows from the mid 1960s to today. The order doesn't always stay the same but lately (and at the time of the contest) they are: Doctor Who, Warehouse 13, Quantum Leap, NCIS, Stargate SG:1.

There were some good guesses that included: JAG, Star Trek (and Star Trek Next Generation), The Big Bang Theory, The Black Adder, ALF and Monty Python's Flying Circus

Question 3: Wow the only Trading Card related question: True of False: I would pay upwards of $100 for a NM/M 2012 Topps Archives Baseball 241 Bryce Harper RC Super Short Print?

Quick Answer NO. Although it is true Harper's SSP RC card is on my want list(s) I would NOT pay $100 or more for it or any single card. Certainly not any modern card, maybe a super good conditioned vintage card that is normally worth many times that or if I were a millionaire and price was not an issue for anything. My normal top cost for any card is about $40. Preferably under $20. I have spent in the $30 range for cards I really really want that are in decent shape and this Harper card I'd almost pay $40 in a heartbeat for and I might go up to $50 for it.

Question 4: Of the following four television shows, which TWO have I seen at least an episode of and would most likely watch the entire run of? Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, 24, Lost

Answer: Lost and 24. I watched most of season one of Lost off and on, I stopped watching a few episodes after the "second" group of stranded passengers "arrived". Of the four shows I listed it would be the one I most likely would make an effort to watch the entire run of. Heck half the cast is on Hawaii Five-0 now so why not? 24 I've only watched one episode the one that was Sean Astin's last episode. I'm mixed on if I actually want to watch the series or not. Breaking Bad I actually have zero interest in seeing. A science teacher (or whatever subject Math? he taught) running a meth lab out of his trailer just doesn't do it for me. I also got sick of seeing that guys face with his toxic mask and quarantine suit all over the place and as people's avatars on group forums and in Facebook. Game of Thrones or it Thorns? Actually I saw about 5-10 minutes of an episode once, I don't recall which season, season 2 maybe? It was a nighttime scene in the woods and I recall a large tree or tree stump don't recall much else possibly it was a death scene. I don't know for some reason now-days the medieval fantasy type shows don't excite me like they did when I was a teen eons ago. I also don't want to get attached to a character only to see them killed in the next five minutes.

Question 5: Yes or NO: I own an HD Flatscreen TV?

Answer: NO. Believe it or not that is a big purchase I haven't made yet. I still have an ancient by today's standards 21" Sony that is 17 years old. I have another just as old maybe older TV. I also don't have a Blu-Ray player or a DVD-R (or DVR). I have an ancient VHS player/recorder and a DVD player or two. I'm of that old school of  "If it ain't broke don't fix it". I also DO NOT like watching TV on the dang computer/internet it isn't watching TV its watching a video on the computer.

Bonus to 5th Blogiversary!

5th Blogiversary Contest!

Hey how did this happen? Today Marks the 5th Blogiversary of this Blog. Yay Me! In honor of this milestone I think I should have a contest. So I'll borrow a "Play At The Plate" from Brian's playbook. So this contest will require a little work to win on your part and on mine (I have to remember how I'm scoring the dang thing and for what). I know I usually don't ask for much but in this case it is the concept not me. I hope I haven't gotten in over my head on this thing.

Beginning with this post until the end of the contest at 4 PM (Eastern) on Friday the 24th, you will get one entry point for commenting on any post I've written on this blog. Only one comment per post will get points and try to make the comment relevant to the post subject. If you have previously commented on a post you can make a new comment, but only the new one will count toward the contest. Strive For 65 Set Build

Note: As I build this set I will update this post. I have now 377/598 63% (379/600 63.2%)

I don't usually set to many goals, and usually not very lofty ones at that. I don't do New Year's Resolutions either. I also don't like to mention my age much but... well next year 2015 will be the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Topps Baseball set. One of my favorite sets of all-time.


And OH, it also happens to be my birth year. So yeah next year in April I will turn the BIG Five-0. Not really looking forward to that. I had the sudden realization that it would be very very cool to finally complete the flagship set for my birth year by My 50th and the 50th anniversary of said yadda yadda.

 This "card" of me is not a real card.
It is just a digital mock-up I photoshopped,
well MSPaint(ed) (or MS Photo Editor or both) a few years ago.
I used the Jim Hannan card as a key.

So maybe the blogiverse can help me out here by sending me some '65 Mojo preferably by trade or gift or some small $$ sales. Some of those big named Yankees and Dodgers and various other stars will probably be stumbling blocks. I hope not this is a very special achievement.

Believe it or not I've had this '65 Ernie Banks for as long as I can remember, actually I think it was originally my brother's and I traded something for it (a 1970 Fergie Jenkins or 1958 Willie Mays maybe?) Still one of my all-time fave cards in my collection.

Of course I would like to get them in as best condition as possible but I will accept the sort of poor conditioned ones to. One of the big criteria is the backs need to be relatively clean and all the info readable. They can have some off-centering but not too drastic and not any miscuts (unless an upgraded copy is with the said miscut). Checklist cards I'd prefer to be unmarked but will accept ones that are marked a bit. I just hope they aren't the super messed up ones. LOL. Even with some of the duds if I at least get one of each card in the set (even some very poor old beat up ones that went through the mud bath with the bike spokes it was attached to) my goal will have been met. Then I can upgrade later, but of course I would prefer not to have to do much upgrading.

Out of the 598 (well 600 with 2 checklist variants) cards in the set I only have a measly little 94. Not quite a sixth or a fifth even, I might need one of those soon. I have a LONG way to go.

Card #21 Don Blasingame Senators - the copy I got (long story short) was in worse condition than the sportlots seller had originally stated they refunded me the .18¢ for it and sent it anyway the problem is the back has some paper glued to it (the opposite of paper loss). You can read some of the stuff but not all of it, and removing the extra paper and glue residue if even possible would ruin the card further than it is. So I need an Upgrade which is why it is still on the list and blue. I picked up a copy of this one at my LCS for $2 it is way off center almost a misscut. The front is off-center down and to the right. The back way off-center to the bottom, on the bottom the last of the white box is on the very edge of the card a hair's-width of blue is at the bottom in places.

Hmmm apparently there is a slight variation with card #508 7th Series Checklist Cards 507-598. There is an ever so slight font size variation a Large and a small. Not sure if I'm going to try for this variation or not. I am currently watching an Ebay listing that is selling the pair for about $20.

19 Jan 2016: Wow! Mega Mail Day! 13 Packages ties my all-time record for most packages in a single mailday. Not all PWEs/Bubble Mailers had '65 cards. I did get 13 new ones including League Leaders cards 4 and 9, and Team Cards of Braves, Phillies, Pirates and Tigers.
16 Jan 2016: Three cards came in two team cards plus 61 Chris Cannizzaro from checklist number one card 79. Started Saturday status update "Strive for '65 Status: Mid-January 2016".
13 Jan 2016: Updating from some cards received back in Oct or Nov last year.
07 May 2015: Recently got in 3 cards from another collector as a bonus with some cards from a group box break of newer cards and got #390 Bill Freehan from a Sportslot Auction.
27 Mar 2015: Got card #100 in a 3 card lot of Cardinals cards from an Ebay auction.
21 Mar 2015: Two more cards 200 Joe Torre and 415 Curt Flood
13 Mar 2015: One more card came in from sportlots #127
12 Mar 2015: Playing catch up with this post. In the last month or two I got about a dozen new cards for the set, a few from some auctions I think, a couple from another blogger sent in a PWE with that three pocket (cut from a 9 pocket sheet) filled with cards about 3 to 4 cards per pocket whatever comfortably fits, and some (including a dupe plus one graded) from a sale from a member on the SCF forum.
04 Aug 2014: Got 17 cards for this set from a Secret Santa in July package on Friday 01 Aug 2014. The cards fill up my first complete page, and had the final World Series card I needed for that subset.
18 May 2014: This past week I got about a dozen cards in including the Checklist variations I needed so now I have a full checklist sub-set. So actually the total number is 600 cards not just 598 or 599
25 Apr 2014: Got #170 Hank Aaron and Unmarked Checklists 104, 189, 273, 361
17 Apr 2014: From the Bay #400 Harmon Killebrew ($5.95 +$2 shipping)
31 Mar 2014: Got 4 "damn" Yankees for $25 from TCF forum sale.
29 Mar 2014: Picked up a replacement for card #21 as mentioned above.
24 Mar 2014: I put in an order at "Just Commons" for a bunch of the ones I need,  Not a huge amount aprox. 42 cards in total in either VG or EX/MT for $61.45 most in the $1 to $2 range, one I didn't notice until after I had placed the order that it was a whopping $7.50 one of the EX/MT ones (#559 Ed Bailey SP).

4th Blogiversary: Yay Me!


Today 16 October 2013 marks the Fourth Anniversary of this blog. Notice the original banner I didn't quite get it all filled in yet, I was still trying to figure out what cards to put on it. Wanna see my First Post? Card Blogging What A Concept. Yep the title is a play on the title of the 1979 debut comedy album from Robin Williams "Reality... What A Concept."

Another concept is posting more often. That will at least keep my two or three semi-regular blog followers awake.

Happy Birthday Number Nine!

It is NFL Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen's 79th birthday. Happy Birthday Sonny! Here is what was on Facebook this morning on the Redskins Page:

Another birthday mention is on the blog "Can't Have Too Many Cards" with some cool Sonny pics, some of which I hadn't seen before.

Sonny J. is one of my All-Time favorite QBs if not my favorite. He is best remembered as a Redskin, but he started his NFL career in Philadelphia with the Eagles.

In 1964 Sonny was traded to the Skins in a trade that involved QB Norm Snead. That meant that a few of his late 1960s trading cards even though they were labeled as him being on the Skins, used  an old photo of him in his green Eagles jersey.

OK this last pic is not a card but it is cool memorabilia. In 1971 (and '72) The Mattel Toy company made little battery operated "toy" record players with 2.5" discs of the popular sports figures of the day. Called Instant Replay I got this Sonny Jurgensen one off of Ebay for $6.99 + $2.00 shipping.


Happy BirthdayGood old number Nine, I'm not sure why the Redskins have not retired his number yet. They should before some hotshot kid claims it and has a terrible career while wearing it, or someone from another team that wears the number like Mr. Romo gets traded to the Skins. Oh I did a quick Google and technically not retired, The Redskins have a sort of non-retirement policy, his number along with several other Redskins legends like John Riggins are "Unofficially" retired.
