Trade Pile 001: Card 4 A 1989 Topps Expo

 Trade Pile 001:
Card 4: A 1989 Topps Expo
30 Sep 2022
Adding another card to the pile it is now a  foursome.

Top of The Pile:
1989 Topps Baseball:
373 Tracy Jones Expos

The rest of the Pile:
1991 Topps Cracker Jack Mini (Micro) Baseball:
17 Mark Langston Angels
Yes this one is creased some.
(image obviously not to scale)

2011 Topps Opening Day Baseball:
ODS-3 Alex Rodriguez Yankees

2016 Bowman Draft - Chrome Baseball:
BDC-29 Justin Dunn Mets

The concept is simple I will post a card or cards I have up for trade and the first person to claim the "pile" in this post's comments will receive them all. The golden rule with this is that you must offer at least one card off of my wantlists. See My Master Want List on this blog or My Wantlist at TCDB (Collection -> Main Collection -> scroll to Wantlist, select sport category) If you don't have a card off of my lists I will also accept Pre 1987 Vintage Baseball or Football. Also Non-Sport from 1960s to 1970s. Please let me know what you intend to send.

After awhile I will add another card or two to the "Pile" (or "Stack") of unclaimed cards until the pile gets claimed.

Continuing Set Build 1974: Expos O's and Team Cards Sub-Sets

UPdated: 24 April 2015: Finished Expos and Orioles teams.

It's been over 40 years in the making and it is still "in progress", like 99% of all my set "builds" from my childhood. One of my all-time fave Baseball sets is 1974 Topps. I have made one step more toward finishing that 660 card set. Well actually there are something like 678 including some error correction variations. Maybe I'd have better luck building the O-Pee-Chee set?

The little steps that will help fill in the complete set. I have slowly been working toward and with some orders from sportlots in an effort to complete some of those little steps in the form of team sets.

So now I have an almost complete Expos team set: 29/29 (30/30 w/Team Checklist) Dang 4 player rookie cards.

With Card #599 I think I have the small print version of the Padres variation, I'm not 100% sure as it is hard to tell sometimes the difference between large and small fonts on these weird variations.

Team Cards set: 24/24 (25/25 w/Wash)

273 Cards 265-396
414 Cards 397-528
637 Cards 529-660

When I finally COMPLETE these teams I think I will show them off. Til then I am just showing the samples from above. While scanning the cards for this post I noticed some previously unseen or forgotten paper loss damage to my Brooksie card back:

EEK!
Not only is there enough loss that you can't read his first few HR and RBI stats but the top of AVG column top is hanging on to dear life.

Over all for the complete set I am at 61% almost 62% complete.

Strive For '65: Slowly Not So Surely

It has been a few weeks since I have made any progress in this goal. With a little more than 8 months to go, it is looking more and more like it will not get finished in time.

In a recent small lot of nine cards from sportlots I added one card to my 1965 Topps Baseball Set Build. It was the main card of the four cards or so that I was interested in of the nine cards and the 2nd oldest (the oldest looking one is actually a more modern reprint). The cards were delivered promptly and pretty safely in a padded envelope. They were in a nine-pocket binder page with the page folded up by the rows, similar to what many are doing now with PWEs.

Lets look at the most recent addition to my Strive For '65 Project:

Card #158 Dick Sisler Reds (Front and Back)

So the updated numbers:
177/598 (179/600) 29.9%

Some of those other cards I will mention in this blog sometime later, maybe. The Expos card of course I will mention sometime on my Curly W Cards blog.

Expos Extra: Expos From The Repo (Repack)

In my last couple of posts I mentioned the booty I got from a repack adventure at the Dollar store (part 1, part 2). I picked a few cards to highlight in those posts that I thought people would be most interested in seeing. Well now it is time to show some of the cards I was most interested in.

This poker hand of cards (actually I already showed one in part one the Jeff Fassero card) are Expos ancestor cards of my Homie Team The Nationals. I thought about posting these on my Curly W Cards blog, but these guys never actually played in DC so I don't really want to highlight them there. I also considered posting this as a Washington Wednesday post but decided not to for the same reason.

Oooh I just got a good idea (at least it is a good idea for now) I'll call this new type of post Expos Extra. It will be for those older Expos cards of players that never called DC their home (at least at first, I might start slipping and adding guys who transitioned onto the Nats in DC). I think now I can justify showing them off at CWC.

Now for the cards:

1994 Pinacle 355 Ken Hill Expos
(Front and Back)

1994 Upper Deck 274 Home Field Advantage Larry Walker Expos
(Front and Back)

1984 Topps 503 Elias Sosa Padres
OK so Elias isn't in an Expos Uni. But he was an Expo at one time
(Front and Back)

1984 Topps 390 Tim Raines AS Expos
(Front and Back)

I'll have to make some adjustments to the EE Logo. There are a few things with it I am not totally happy with.

Repack Dollar Tree Style: Pack Two of Two

Last post was Pack One of my Two pack Dollar Tree repack adventure so lets get into the goodies right away.

Pack Two Full Contents group pic

Opened Pack 2 after midnight on 08/09 Feb 2014:
Pack Two: 1981 Topps 1980 Runs Batted In Leaders showing on top. (Back card is a 1987 Topps Kirby Puckett)
No noticeable dings (unlike the other pack)

Here are the few selected cards group shot:
Dollar Tree CardsOne 30 card repack two selectred cards group
(Front and Back)

Cards as Picked (27 Cards Total)
1981 Topps 3 - 1980 Runs Batted In Leaders: Cecil Cooper Brewers and Mike Schmidt Phillies
1994 Pinacle 355 Ken Hill Expos
1992 Fleer 10 Sam Horn Orioles
1988 Topps 408 Dion James Braves
1996 Topps 318 Greg Maddox Braves
1994 Fleer Flair 60 Wally Joyner Royals
1988 Topps 395 Jimmy Key AS Blue Jays
1988 Topps 300 Don Mattingly Yankees
1995 Topps Stadium Club 185 Craig Biggio Astros
1987 Topps 489 Bill Gullickson Reds
1996 Pacific Collection 22 Kevin Foster Cubs
1995 Score 314 John Valentin Season Highlights Red Sox
1994 Select 255 Terry Mulholland Yankees
1994 Select 223 Dean Palmer Rangers
1994 Select Baseball 223 Dean Palmer Rangers
(Front and Back)
OK so this pack features two 1994 Select cards one right after the other. At first I thought the design was so-so with the players last name vertical and so large but after studying it some it isn't too bad. **Sigh** looks like another junk years set to try to build.

1987 Topps 195 Mike Pagliarulo Yankees
1996 Topps 263 Vince Coleman Mariners
1996 Topps Baseball 263 Vince Coleman Mariners
(Front and Back)
Normally I wouldn't pick this card to show, but for this pack it was the card that was duplicated in the pack (about four cards from now). It's one of Topps mid 1990s sets I'm so-so on.

1988 Topps 9 Andy Hawkins Padres
1988 Topps 744 Whitey Herzog Cardinals
1988 Topps 49 Dave Clark Indians
1996 Topps 263 Vince Coleman Mariners (Yeah here is the dupe I told you about)
1988 Topps 301 Bud Black Royals
1988 Topps 576 Tommy Hinzo Indians
1993 Fleer Flair 271 Erik Hanson Mariners
1994 Fleer Flair 252 Mike Devereaux Orioles
1994 Fleer Flair Baseball 252 Mike Devereaux Orioles
(Front and Back)
One of those sets from Fleer that I am not sure if I like or not. I like most of the Flair sets but some of those two picture fronts are just too freaky. Flair was Fleer's high end product it seems.

1991 Topps Stadium Club 571 Tommy Gregg Braves
1987 Topps 398 Brad Havens Orioles
1987 Topps 450 Kirby Puckett Twins
1987 Topps Baseball 450 Kirby Puckett Twins
(Front and Back)
Way to end the pack with a power packed super star.

So this pack only had 27 cards 3 less than advertised combined with the other pack I just evened out. The year range in this pack 1981 to 1996 with most late 80s to mid 90s.

Repack Dollar Tree Style: Pack One of Two

Some people like repacks and some people love them. It seems that in general most card collectors do not, but a lot of card bloggers seem to. I am one of the converted. At first I shunned them because they almost always contain a ton of "junk wax" but since I was sort of in collecting hiatus during the height and tail end of the junk years I am one of those rare birds that doesn't have a ton of it. So before you Toss out that junk send it my way, or recycle it heck the things are cardboard and cardboard gets recycled.

Most of the repacks I have opened have been Fairfield ones in various forms that I purchased from Target. I have heard other bloggers sing the praises of the repacks at dollar stores and in particular at Dollar Tree. Fortunately I live within walking distance of a Dollar Tree and also a Family Dollar in the same strip mall shopping center, except the Family Dollar doesn't carry cards. :( On one trip to the Dollar store to save money on kitchen, bathroom or some kind of house supplies I went to the Dollar Tree and got two packs of cards. These are the cardsone (Cards One) type repacks. I got the 30 card "Ultimate Jumbo" pack Baseball Edition. I was tempted to get some of the semi-current "Hoops" basketball packs they had but since the Bullets now Wizards are the only Hoops team I collect and those packs only have 5 cards in them I would end up trading or selling more cards or more realistically getting stuck with Basketball cards of players I don't know from teams I don't want. I just might get some sometime just for the fun of it.

As I said I purchased two 30 card packs. I will mention the goodies from both packs in two posts to keep the individual posts short and to keep people from getting board from one exceptionally long post.

The contents of Pack One in a group shot
So Pack One I opened on 03 Feb 2014
Pack One: 1982 Topps Carlton Fisk IA showing on front (back can barely make out back of card Mike Munoz)
Some of the cards have small dings and paper ware on edges. The orientation of the cards was a mishmash, some where flipped over and some were upside down. Making things more random and in some ways more exciting.

Here is a few select cards from the pack. I'll show some of them in an enlarged view and some of them I will show sometime later,
Select cards from repack
(front and back)
There were a total of 33 cards in Pack One (Hey 3 more cards than advertised) Here is the list of cards in pack order.
1982 Topps  111 Carlton Fisk IA White Sox
1982 Topps Baseball 111 Carlton Fisk In Action White Sox
(Front and Back)
Those "In Action" cards (which usually follow a card with a regular "non-action" or portrait picture of the same player) a throwback to the 1972 set.

1995 Score 230 Mario Diaz Marlins
1997 Pinnacle 9 Curt Shilling Phillies
1984 Topps 390 Tim Raines AS Expos
1989 Donruss 241 Jim Deshales Astros
1992 Pinnacle 13 Edgar Martinez Mariners
1982 (or 83) Fleer Team Sticker Angels Califormina shaped logo
1984 Topps 503 Elias Sosa Padres
1989 Upper Deck 355 Ivan DeJesus Tigers
2000 Fleer Showcase 91 Ben Grieve A's
2000 Fleer Gamers 31 Greg Maddux Braves
1981 Topps 597 Rafael Landestoy Astros
1997 Topps 61 Mike Fetters Brewers
1989 Donruss 360 Paul O'Neill Reds
2000 Fleer Tradition40 Matt Williams Diamondbacks (WoooWhoo the new Nats Mgr)
1992 Upper Deck 204 Jose Guzman Rangers
1997 Pinnacle 10 Jeff Fassero Mariners (Marked Mariners but in Expos Uni)
1997 Pinnacle Baseball 10 Jeff Fassero Mariners (Shown in Expos Uniform)
(Front and Back)
When I first got a 1997 Pinnacle card I hated it because it was difficult to read the players name in among the gold leaf design on the bottom of the card. I'm still not thrilled with the design but I think I will at least try building a few team sets if not the whole set. After I scanned this card I noticed the weird photo edge cropping on the back portrait I checked the back of the other 1997 Pinnacle card from this pack and it has the same weird cropping.

1984 Topps 352 Dave Stewart Rangers
1981 Topps 359 Mark Wagner Tigers
1982 (83) Fleer Team Sticker Orioles Cap w/Bird Head and team name
1994 Upper Deck 274 Home Field Advantage Larry Walker Expos
1995 Fleer 509 Ozzie Smith Cardinals
1995 Score Gold Rush 395 Bret Barberie Marlins
2002 Topps 244 Derrek Lee Marlins
1992 Pinnacle 9 Andy Van Slyke Pirates
1994 Upper Deck 276 Home Field Advantage John Kruk Phillies
1995 Pinnacle 414 Russ Davis RC Yankees
1980 Topps 573 Kent Tekulve Pirates
1993 Upper Deck 124 Andy Van Slyke Pirates
1993 Upper Deck 113 Mitch Williams Phillies
1984 Topps 536 Doug Bair Tigers (back miscut)
Pair of 1984 Topps Baseball 536 Doug Bair Tigers
miscut card on left better centered one on right
Backs: Better one on top miscut one on bottom
1984 Topps 536 Doug Bair Tigers (back well centered) Dupe (well the miscut is really the Dupe)
1984 Topps Baseball 536 Doug Bair Tigers
Better cut and centered copy (Front and Back)
1995 Score 228 Mike Munoz Rockies

So in a pack advertised as 30 cards I got 33 total with one duplicate which was right behind its miscut twin. The years of the cards ranged from 1980 to 2002 with most predictably being in the late 1980s to early '90s "Junk Years".
