Crown Of Thorns - Eternal Death

Genre: Death/Thrash
Country: Sweden
Year: 1997

1. Angels Die
2. Beautiful Evil Soul
3. In Bitterness And Sorrow
4. The Black Heart
5. World Within
6. The Serpent Garden
7. Kill (The Priest)
8. Misery Speaks
9. Hunger
10. Death Of God

2nd album by Crown Of Thorns and last one with this name, before renamed to The Crown. Even if the group is described as melodic death, here you will find extreme, brutal, aggressive and blasphemic death/thrash. Melodic death metal moments exist, but not in the way anyone expect. Fast as hell, with raw and rough production, this release is probably their most brutal ever. A gem of extreme death/thrash.

2nd album by Grip Inc.. A great performance from all the members. Less straightforward compared to the debut, more experimental thrash, in times progressive, in times technical. It brings together a variety of ideas from each member resulting in a very modern aggressive sound for the 90′s.

2. Valdogg
3. Valgalderkvad
4. Kledd I Brynje Og...
5. Hymne
6. Bukkeferd
7. Naglfar/Ragnarok

Debut album by Kampfar. The riffs that are produced are original and even catchy, while maintaining the raw, low-budget production that most black metal fans seem to desire. A solid album that actually consists of 5 tracks (+intro, +outro), that may be long, but they are arranged quite well.

Debut album by Night In Gales. A rather decent melodic album, which is solid piece of metal. Everything in this album just screams of the famous Gothenburg style. The guitars are the highlight of this album, with many leads and harmonies, but not overbearing and well structured.

Entombed - To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth

Genre: Death'n'Roll
Country: Sweden
Year: 1997

1. To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak the Truth
2. Like This With The Devil
3. Lights Out
4. Wound 5. They
6. Somewhat Peculiar
7. DCLXVI
8. Parasight
9. Damn Deal Done
10. Put Me Out
11. Just As Sad
12. Boats
13. Uffe's Horrorshow
14. Wreckage

4th album by Entombed and highly anticipated. This is where the band totally changed its sound and nearly left their death metal past to a more rock'n'roll driven path. Entombed with the previous releases helped develop the swedish death metal sound as well as helped a lot to the death'n'roll 'movement' with this one.

Vader - Black To The Blind

Genre: Death
Country: Poland
Year: 1997

1. Heading For Internal Darkness
2. The Innermost Ambience
3. Carnal
4. Fractal Light
5. True Names
6. Beast Raping
7. Foetus God
8. The Red Passage
9. Distant Dream
10. Black To The Blind

4th album by Vader and my favorite one. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, this is the shortest release the band has ever put out. Doc's performance here is every bit as good as anything else he ever did in his lifetime, blasting away with almost robotic precision. Totally brutal death metal, with great blastbeating moments, production that fits well and awesome songwritting.

3. Staying Conscious
4. Beyond Genesis
5. Spiritechnology
6. Inertia
7. Hermaphroditis
8. Dancing To Life
9. Figments

3rd album by Alchemist. The band managed perfectly to fuse acoustic and distorted guitars with mesmerizing keyboards, Middle Eastern and tribal influences, death metal growls, deep rumbles and high pitched screams and epic structure to form an album that just takes you on a journey through its music. Lyrics are preoccupied with the disturbed balance between nature and technology.

Strapping Young Lad - City

Genre: Thrash/Death/Industrial
Country: Canada
Year: 1997

1. Velvet Kevorkian

3. Oh My Fucking God
4. Detox
5. Home Nucleonics
6. AAA
7. Underneath The Waves
8. Room 429 (Cop Shoot Cop cover)
9. Spirituality

2nd album by Strapping Young Lad. Frontman Devin Townsend assembled a permanent lineup to record this album, including legendary Gene Hoglan, along with Townsend’s former bandmates Jed Simon on guitar and Byron Stroud on bass. The technical proficiency of each band member is amazing, to say the least. The riffs are killer and barely ever slow down enough.

12. Are We Not Men?
13. 25
14. Cromwell Street

2nd album by Postmortem. The band is displaying a primitive form of death'n'roll with some thrash elements. The lyrics are humorous and about serial killers. Groovy in times, brutal and not much technical , it is simply a solid and entertaining release.

Summoning - Nightshade Forests 'Ep

Genre: Atm. Black
Country: Austria
Year: 1997

1. Mirkwood
2. Kortirion Among The Trees
3. Flesh And Blood
4. Habbanan Beneath The Star

Amazing 'Ep by Summoning, that contains some songs that were left off of their previous album 'Dol Guldur'. This mini-album is different, mostly because of the different sound and production. The guitars, which this time play a very small role in the songs, are mixed to the background so that they are virtually just low buzzing left in the shadow of the multiple keyboard-layers, bombastic percussions and the gnarling vocals.

Forbidden - Green

Genre: Exp. Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1997

2. Green
3. Phat
4. Turns To Rage
5. Face Down Heroes
6. Over The Middle
7. Kanaworms
8. Noncent$
9. Blank
10. Focus

4th album by Forbidden. This album is not like the previous albums at all, the band is more focused on slower paces than before and the sound is wierder. The vocals are distorted in places and a little forced at times, but not in a bad way. The guitars are pretty dense but the general heaviness is quite weak.

Suidakra - Lupine Essence

Genre: Black/Death/Epic
Country: Germany
Year:1997

1. Banshee
2. Dragon Tribe
3. Heresy
4. Sheltering Dreams
5. Havoc
6. Warpipes Call Me
7. ...And A Minstrel Left The Mourning Valley
8. Internal Epidemic

This is the self-released debut album by Suidakra. It blends elements of medieval/epic, melodic death and black metal quite nicely. The clean male and female vocal work does offer a somewhat melancholy gothic tinge to what is otherwise a very epic and aggressive offering. The production is a bit raw, but it delivers the medieval feeling very well.

5. The Four Strings Of Mourning
6. To Die Is To Wake
7. Lady Rosenred
8. Raistlin And The Rose
9. A Crimson Cosmos

3rd album by Lake Of Tears. Leaving behind their most hard years, the band came back like a trio and renowing their musical style. The growls were gone and they were replaced by the special Daniel Brennare's clean voice, which fit perfect with the new dominace of keyboards and 70's influences.

4. I Believe
5. Child Of The Damned (Warlord cover)

8. Unchained
9. Glory To The Brave

Debut album by Hammerfall, which updates the power metal formula as it existed in the mid-1990s with a healthy influence from NWOBHM masters like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. The music is based on very solid speed-based riffwork, catchy drumwork with lots of double bass and very solid basslines, and also features the instantly recognizable voice of Joacim Cans.

Dismember - Death Metal

Genre: Death
Country: Sweden
Year: 1997

1. Of Fire
2. Trendkiller
3. Misanthropic
4. Let the Napalm Rain
5. Live For the Fear (Of Pain)
6. Stillborn Ways
7. Killing Compassion
8. Bred For War
9. When Hatred Killed the Light
10. Ceremonial Comedy
11. Silent Are the Watchers
12. Mistweaver

4th album by Dismember, one of their more melodic records to date. They managed to mix perfectly brutality to melody. Grinding, roaring riffs back up high-speed lead guitars, while some really good basswork plugs away under it all. Vocalist Matti Kärki spits out lines and his vocals also contribute for the overall atmosphere of the album.
