7. Halbzeit
8. Aus Alten Wunden
9. Kardia
10. Wir
11. Religion
12. Kalt
13. Ära

5th album by Minas Morgul. By clocking near one hour and ten minutes, the length of the album, fortunately, doesn't get tiring. The album flows well, with catchy, simple and melodic black metal songs. Mostly mid-tempo, sometimes epic, the band managed to release a solid album.

10th album by Sinister, with Aad Kloosterwaard the only 'old' member in the lineup, since everybody left the band in 2011. Aad recruited his bandmates from his project Absurd Universe to record this one. They unleash an attack of blast beat drumming and traditional, groove-laden death metal riffage. Once again they deliver classic song structures, punishing vocals and precise, razor-sharp guitar work.

6th album by Paradox. The recruitment of Christian Munzner (Obscura, etc.) brought fresh air in the band. The album has absolutely mindblowing guitar solos with insane amount of shredding and sweeping. The sound of the album carries a progressive/melodic wave of thrash metal. Fresh ideas, great musicianship, nice production and a great thrash/speed album.

9th album by Incantation, 6 years after their last one. The band sounds fresh and energetic, the classic sound of the first three albums is present but updated. The sound is clear and distinct without losing any of the band’s old school charm and the songwriting is of a consistently high quality, that quality of the band at their prime early on in their career.

8. Hedonistic And Merciless

2nd album by Sabretung, a year after their promising debut and the final album to feature the talents of Daniel McInnes and Tyler Purvis, who left the band after the recordings. They sound crisper and bite just that bit harder this time. Vocals are aggressive shouts but riffs are what its all about and they get a real groove going at times.

Debut album by Grand Supreme Blood Court. The band consists of former Asphyx guitarist Eric Daniels and current Asphyx members, Martin van Drunen, Alwin Zurr and Bob Bagchus, along with Theo van Eekelen (Hail Of Bullets). 7. Rage
8. Cross The Sky
9. Motherfuckery
10. I Believe
11. To Be Free

11th album by Flotsam And Jetsam. The thrash days of the band are long gone. This time they are softening their sound more. The only highlight of the album is the perfect vocal delivery of Eric A.K.. All the album moves around him, but the songwritting is very simple and weak, sometimes too hard rock. No ideas, no lyrics, some thrashy grooves here and there.

8. Forget-Me-Not
9. Poor Little Baroness
10. The Time Of Your Life
11. Chronicles Of A Frozen Era
12. Ophale

7th album by Elvenking. It is more straightforward, a bit more ‘rock’ than folk but just as focused on the uplifting choruses. Infusing some folk back into the power, this release harkens back to Elvenking’s roots, while simultaneously continuing the catchiness of later releases.

11. Under Violent Sledge

13th album by Destruction, 30 years after their creation. Unfortunately, their 30th anniversary finds them with a mediocre album. Loud and clear production, great performance by the members, but the songwriting is so one-dimensional that make someone easily bored.

Compared to their previous releases, this release takes a slightly progressive approach and changes the tempo of each song throughout. With a perfect production everything here signs, amazing vocals, riffing and rhythm section.

3rd album by Early Graves. On their first album since the tragic death of founding singer Makh Daniels two years ago, the band finds a new voice with close friend John Strachan, of the Funeral Pyre, taking over the vocal duties. The album features 8 face-melting tracks that clock in at just over 32 minutes. A dirty mix of thrash and hardcore, with some D-Beat thrown in, obvious death metal influences and punk rawness.

2nd album by Dr.Living Dead. It is full of energy the whole way through. It's 12 tracks of pit-inspired speed/thrash with a hardcore gloss. the difference with their debut is that the band has a little more groove on its sound. Catchy, aggressive songwritting, vocals sound like a mix of Belladona and Mike Muir and a modern production.

Ensiferum - Unsung Heroes

Genre: Viking/Folk/Power

2. In My Sword I Trust
3. Unsung Heroes
4. Burning Leaves
5. Celestial Bond
6. Retribution Shall Be Mine
7. Star Queen (Celestial Bond part II)
8. Pohjola
9. Last Breath
10. Passion Proof Power

5th album by Ensiferum, 3 years after their brilliant 'From Afar'. The band continues augmenting their traditional folky melodic sound with symphonic elements, creating a sound that was a bit less “pagan-folk” in tone, but a bit more “mainstream”. Even though the band’s formula is rigidly in place, polished, bouncy power metal with clean male, female vocals and harsh blackish vocals, sweeping folky synths and soaring choruses, this release can't stand next to their previous releases.

This killer 'Ep by Blut Aus Nord is the follow up to their 2010 'Ep "What Once Was ... Liber" and consists of 2 songs, each one clocking the same time 14.24. With this release the band takes a more traditional and raw approach resembling scandinavian black metal of the mid '90s, in the vein of their 777 Sect(s) album in sound.

10. BU2B2
11. Wish Them Well
12. The Garden

19th album by Rush, 5 years after their last one. The songwriting is quite diverse and maintains the album's consistency perfectly. The band perfectly mixes complex structures and diversified song ideas with loads of catchy parts and addicting melodies. This is Rush's first full concept album, based on Voltaire's Candide. The cover art displays the time at 9:12 in reference to the album 2112.

2. Spurn The Outstreched Hand
3. Manically Unleashed
4. Teratogenesis
5. Bound By Desire

This 'Ep by Revocation, contains 5 new songs that are clocking near 22 minutes. It is nothing but an adrenaline rush of hyper-speed fusion metal that definitely brings more of Revocation’s thrash influences to the forefront. The band had decided to take some of the death metal out of their sound, leaving a much more chaotic thrash metal beast.

Debut album by Nocturnal Vomit, after several demos, an Ep and 4 split 'Eps. By building their music around a mid-tempo speed basis, they maneuver in excellence between slow, swampy parts and demonic outbursts. An intense occult atmosphere and their own identity in their sound, make this release a standout.

7. Cold Day In Hell
8. Act Of God
9. Mercy Killing
10. Dark Shadows

4th album by Obsession, featuring Mike Vescera (ex-Loudness, ex-Yngie Malmsteen). Mike’s vocals are truly unique and are just as crisp as they ever were on the latest offering from Obsession. Heavy, soaring riffs of top musicianship, catchy choruses and an excellent balance of melody. Typical U.S. power/heavy of the '80s where some amazing melodies are going on here with very memorable songs.

5. Which Side Are You On? (traditional song cover)
6. Killing the Giants As They Sleep
7. Black Waters (traditional song cover)
8. Kentucky

5th album by the one man band Panopticon. A. Lundr is bridging the gap between his favorite music (black metal) and his cultural roots (bluegrass/folk). Kentucky lyrically, takes an important look at the plight of the Kentucky coal miners, environmentalism and unions. Musically, it blends blackened screams with bluesy singing, electric guitar with banjo and generally old school black metal with country/folk.

5. Curse Of Reality
6. Twilight Zone (Lord Fouls Hort)
7. Shades Of Doom
8. The Jester
9. El Colibri
10. No Friend Of Mine

3rd album by Mekong Delta. It is, without a doubt, one of the band's most technical as well as diverse recordings. They have some of the best early progressive thrash songwriting, strangely catchy ideas and riffs and truly strange and ominous soundscapes.

Entombed - To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth

Genre: Death'n'Roll

6. Somewhat Peculiar
7. DCLXVI
8. Parasight
9. Damn Deal Done
10. Put Me Out
11. Just As Sad
12. Boats
13. Uffe's Horrorshow
14. Wreckage

4th album by Entombed and highly anticipated. This is where the band totally changed its sound and nearly left their death metal past to a more rock'n'roll driven path. Entombed with the previous releases helped develop the swedish death metal sound as well as helped a lot to the death'n'roll 'movement' with this one.

2. Long Live The Loud
3. I Am The Beast
4. Victims Of Sacrifice
5. Beyond The Gates Of Doom
6. Sudden Impact
7. Born To Die
8. Wake Up Screaming

3rd album by Exciter. Loosing in power compared to their previous releases, this release was really underestimated by the fans. It's still a solid piece of speed/heavy, with slightly better production than before. The most important change between this and the previous is probably the vocal quality.

5. Machinegun Preacher
6. Calling The Undead
7. Black Flame
8. White Raven Black Sun
9. Falling From Hell
10. Drowned In Black
11. Can't Wait To Eliminate

6th album by Postmortem. They are leaving away from the elements of their best (imho) album 'Constant Hate'. The death'n'roll moments are almost zero here. Modern, crystal-clear production, distorted growls and groovy sound are the elements that accompany the catchy and simple death/thrash songwritting.

3. Invisible Ley
4. I Thought Of Demons
5. Acid Eagle One
6. Unconscious Mind
7. We So Heavy
8. Let the Sun Receive Her King
9. Nothing Awaits

2nd album by Okkultokrati. They still offer us ugly, crusty punk with a black n' roll, metal-punk aesthetic, but there are differences with their brilliant debut. This time they've slowed down a bit, imagine Darkthrone covering Celtic Frost in punk version, the production is clearer, but the songwritting is solid as hell.

5. Agnosia Archetype
6. Weak And Shapeless
7. I Only See Death In You
8. Scythe Imposter
9. The Spectre (Black Knives To White Witches)
10. Desolate, Once...

3rd album by Planks. It shows another leap away from their hardcore/sludge roots into more song-focused and melody driven spheres. The trademarks one loves about the band are still there, grinding guitars, throbbing bass lines and pounding drums. Vocals are still barked and the aggression is still there, but more darkened and with more melodies.

4. Possessed By Devil's Music
5. Renegade
6. Wail From The Crypts
7. Sadistic Perversions
8. Riding In Hell
9. Confessa Tuoi Peccati

5th album by Revenge. The band continues spreading their speed metal, a year after their successful 4th album. This time they continue in the same levels of quality, producing another killer release (probably in my top for 2012 for this genre), with catchy as hell riffing, entertaining moments combining perfectly heavy with speed and sometimes thrash.

5. A Time Of Crisis
6. For Your Faith
7. Raise Your Fist
8. Heretic
9. Child Of War
10. Police State
11. The End Of The World
12. Let Me Begin Again

2nd album by Heretic, a band that released a great album back in 1988, then dismissed and now reunited (with 2 past-members). Their music is most firmly rooted in the thrash metal genre, although there are plenty of slower paced elements that puts in mind of traditional heavy/power metal. Melodic without being wimpy, aggressive without being extreme. You’re not going to hear the next big thing, whatever that is, on this release.

3. Tank Attack
4. Forces Of Evil
5. Gateway To Death
6. Into Oblivion
7. Dark Traveller
8. Death Of A King
9. Curse Of The Black Sea
10. Mountain Of Madness

5th album by Spectral. This release can be classified as melodic death metal, but restricting ourselves to this label would be to overlook the great work they do to sound like a mixture of different styles, such as black, thrash, folk, pagan and even power. The guitar riffs ranging from moments black, death coming to enter the thrash and power. The keyboards do not take center stage on guitar, maintaining an aggressive sound and powerful but largely give that point of pagan or viking with a dose of epic.

4. Harsh Empire
5. Burning Skies
6. Voyage To The New World
7. The Return Of Quetzalcoatl
8. Fall Of The Feathered King
9. Genocide

Amazing debut album by Vacant Throne. It's a concept album about the spanish conquest of the Aztecs in the 16th century and it combines heavy metal, epic in times, with '80s power metal. Each track has its unique traits, but the atmosphere fastens them together, forming a nearly inseparable merging of epic power metal songs. A really promising debut.

6. Species
7. Lotus Array

6th album by Yakuza. Over 7 tracks and 40 minutes, the band mixes thunderous riffs and prog-metal rhythms with elements of post-rock and even hints of eastern musics. If you’re open to experimental music that’s based on a heavy metal sound but explores worldly sounds, this should be a good listen for you.

9. Hey Suzie
10. Mr. Indispensable
11. Speed

10th album by Tygers Of Pan Tang. Lead by guitarist/founding member Robb Weir the band has managed to release an album that looks back fondly at their roots while still maintaining a modern edge. The production of the album, by the legendary Chris Tsangarides, is pretty solid and fitting well.

Year: 2012

1. Moshing With The Stars
2. You Are What You Eat

After 3 demos and a split 'Ep the time arrived for a whole 'Ep of theirs! Smash Potater delivers manic thrash blended with hardcore. It features 5 tracks but comes in at only 10 minutes long. However the band more than makes up for the length of the album by jam packing every track with tons of catchy as hell riffs. 5. Fight For Your Life
6. Land Of The Lost
7. Wolf Gang
8. Feed The Fire
9. All The Way
10. Can’t Stop The Rush

2nd album by Striker. A straight forward record that is just about day life stories, beer, metal and pretty much whatever happens on their lives as metalheads. The production is very clean and sharp, bringing out the vocals and guitars to the forefront. The typical 80's sound is prominent in the verses where the clean guitar reigns. Raging Metal is set for the bridge, connecting with a melodic, harmonized chorus where Dan opts for high-pitched screams.

The album combines the right amounts of thrash, groove and progressive metal. The whole album has an ambient feeling that is created by the band’s good use of low and dark atmospheric undertones.

Debut album by Cursed Slaughter. This release combines thrash metal with certain aesthetics of eighties hardcore while not sacrificing heaviness, similar to bands like Suicidal Tendencies from that period of time, and the mixture works without any major problems. Nothing groundbreaking, but hell of a fun listen.

11th full length album by My Dying Bride. The strength of the record is that they return  to the core of their sound. Down-tempo riffs, funereal atmosphere and grandiose lead guitars, all topped-off with Aaron's expressive vocal work and darkly poetic lyrics.

2nd album by Arkham Witch. The high quality of the artwork perfectly fits with the Lovecraftian horror-concept around which the band revolves. Musically this album treads an interesting combination of traditional heavy metal, NWOBHM and some late seventies inspired doom metal too. The tracks are riff based and generally heavy as hell, but with a great mid-paced organic groove.

Music played as homage will struggle to sound fresh, but when it's played with such an obvious love for the genre then its hard not to be won over.

Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes Of God

Genre: Black/Thrash/Death
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 2009

1. Apocalyptic Havoc
2. The All-Destroying
3. Carving Out The Eyes Of God

7. Reckoning Of The Soul Made Godless
8. This Passing Into The Power Of Demons
9. Razor Flesh Devoured
10. To Mourn And Forever Wander Through Forgotten Doorways

4th album by Goatwhore. The band's sound takes in elements of black metal, death metal and thrash metal to create a uniquely mix of skin-flaying riffage, hyper-speed drumming and roaring vocals. The black metal influence is obvious as several tracks contain a heavy norwegian black metal riffing and blasting style, along with the higher pitched rasps of Ben Falgoust II (Soilent Green). The death/thrashing is very infectious and it quickly becomes impossible to ignore the catchiness of the fun chugging riffs.

3rd album by Torche, 4 years after their last one. This album could only be described as sludge pop or stoner pop. Now, this isn’t saying they’ve lost the metal edge or the heaviness, no, what they have done though is really allowed the melodies and pop sensibilities to flourish. A really smoothy album, with varieties in tempos and happy melodies all over it!
