Pink-Viz

Did away with some iffy graphics on my daughters BMX lid with a rattle-can of German Montana Acrylic, in flat flouro pink. It's specifically designed as a graffiti paint. It's seems hardy enough, but not entirely compatible with the regular acrylic primer. BP

Ross 'King' Herrod's ex-Captain Highside Rotax short tracker now has DSC twinkly livery. DSC has also reeled in Alpinestars and Bell into the equation. Seen for the first time at the Bike Shed show on Saturday and raced in anger on the Sunday at Rye House. BP

Death Spray Camo

Death Spray Custom's latest project - Splinter. Bicycle, chair and helmet in, I think, a version of a Swedish camo. I love it. The helmet was a raffle prize at the Rockerbox event in Milwaukee, with proceeds going towards buying airfences for dirt track ovals in the US.

The photos were taken by Mitch Payne who has produced a striking project about poultry. Fowl! G

Project RE Paint & Discs

The last couple of months have been a mad scramble. We finished Sideburn 9, organised and promoted Rollerburn and (nearly) finished our Royal Enfield project. We couldn't have done all that without a bunch of skilled mates who are a big part of the Sideburn family.
We didn't make much of a fuss of the Enfield, because it was going on Royal Enfield's stand at the NEC show (on till tomorrow), and we didn't want to steal their thunder. And it's going in the next magazine. But we love the end result. Carl at CFM did a great job bringing it all together and Nicolai at Ornamental Conifer laid on the fantastic graphics and lettering.

Pull Your Finger Out is a phrase O.C. uses all the time, and it could be a motto of Sideburn. He paints jackets, helmets, bikes, signs, walls, cricket bats, but he doesn't do pinstriping.
Thanks to O.C. and thanks to Death Spray Custom for introducing us in the first place.

Another element of Project RE that friends helped us sort out was the brake discs. When you change forks and wheels, getting the discs to fit without adapters between fork and caliper (I hate those adapters) is a big headache. British company EBC made discs for our Project FT, but couldn't do these in time due to moving factories (and us not giving them enough time). Th other two British brake companies I called and emailed didn't even reply. So I spoke to Pepo at Radical Ducati in Madrid. I'd visited him earlier in the year for my day job and he sang the praises of Discaciatti in Northern Italy. I sketched out the centres, emailed, paid up and the discs arrived eight days later. Discaciatti might sound like Italian for brake disc, but it's the family name and I dealt with Ms. Discaciatti, the founder's daughter. Great service and they fit perfectly. G

Great Tits

One thing about being surrounded by do'ers is that it's almost dangerous to mention whimsical ideas, as before you know it they've just done it. No Procrastination. Thats how Rollerburn came about. A lot of people have picked up the proverbial ball and run very fast with it.

I wonder how pissed he was when he came up with the idea of olde town bird boxes including strip-joints, churches, and caffs. Absurd and brilliant. If you're not into bird watching, you may want to bring along your motorcycle petrol tank / mudguards / skateboard / school satchel etc as Cooper's mainstay is traditional signwriting and pinstriping. He will happily paint whatever you like right there and then on the night (apart from your tits). BP

Bone Dome

There are less than a 1000 different ways to paint a motorcycle lid and I'm bored of most of them. But Death Spray draws a smile every time. BP

Mixed-Race Marriage

Ingenuity is magic. And f you can marry a petrol tank from one of the most ridiculed bikes; the Honda Superdream, to one of the most kool, the H-D Shovelhead, then you are a sorcerer. This wonderfully perverse marriage was arranged by Kustom Garage in Pesaro, Italy.They also did the amazingly sparkly paint job on latest Zaeta we had on the Sideburn stand at Verona, so their H-D Nuovo-Progetto Racer will most likely be getting a luscious paint job too. Shame really, I've got a thing about up-market bikes with original badge shitter tanks. BP

We were sent a DVD to review, so we passed it to our friend Al at Skeleton Chop Shop blog. Al is a welder, fabricator, pinstriper and custom painter, so we thought he'd have a better idea of how good the DVD is. Here's what he reckons.

In this DVD Fritz takes us on a trip to a show quality paint job. On the journey he covers, in great detail, all the processes from basic to technical in a friendly and easy to understand manner. He covers prep, sanding, prime, paint, gold leafing, lettering, candys, flake, fades, pinstriping and polishing. I’ve painted a few bikes from home in my garage and wished I had seen this DVD 10 years ago! The only slight downside is Fritz could do with a camera man. Every five minuets he has to mess with the camera. I first heard of Fritz when he was painting for Indian Larry so you know he’s going to be good. Fritz speaks to us like we're his friends standing in his garage, this gives the DVD a real good vibe. I would recommend this especially if you have never painted before.
