More Italian psych-pop, this time from the band I Rogers performing 'Cristina' (1970) and backed by footage from the film 'Noi Donne Siamo Fatte Cosi' (Us Women Are Made This Way). I'd pay good money to have my ears pulled by a wall of death-riding Monica Vitti. MP

Magali Noël - Le Rififi

Off-topic warning!

I'd never heard of Magali Noël until her death was reported on an excellent weekly obituaries podcast (yes really, Radio 4 The Last Word). She sounded interesting, so I investigated. I'm glad I did...

This is from the 1955 French Noir film Les Rififi Chez Les Hommes. (it says 1959 on the YouTubed clip above, but elsewhere it says 1955, and I think that's correct). Rififi is French for fighting or brawling.

Noël also recorded a song about masochistic tendencies call Fais-moi mal, Johnny ("Hurt me Johnny"), that was banned for its lyrical content. This is a translation of one verse, from the original French, I found online...

Cars and Women 2

Off-topic: Back in early January I posted some old photos of concept and supercars photographed with models. I love the style, the colours, the fashions, the outdated optimism of the cars, the whole unsophisticated sophistication of it all.
Anyway, Anders from the superb http://twwhlspls.com blog sent the one above - an NSU concept, the 1973 Trapeze, designed by the Bertone studio.

Then I found the one below. It's not quite right as it's contemporary, but still a nice image.  And it's got a motorcycle in it.

Yes, sometimes (often), I'm that shallow.
If anyone knows where I can find more photos of women with 1970s supercars and concept cars, please let me know.

The photo below has quickly become one of my favourites of all time, though I don't know who took it for what purpose or even what the car is. Hopefully someone can fill me in.

I just got the info, that Anna, (who is a Hungarian designer, pro gastro journalist and website owner, hobby pole dancer and mad biker) created her newest product in the clothes manufacture, the biker bodywear for womens. From my side it's pretty good. And the opening picture also, of course.

Warwick Johnson Cadwell

We have commissioned renowned cartoon artist Warwick Johnson Cadwell to produce an illustration for the next Sideburn.
Above is his (unrelated) drawing of Joan Jett as Boba Fett.

WJC worked with Tank Girl's writer, Alan Martin, replacing original artist Jamie Hewlett (a tough gig), to produce new a new Tank Girl book (Solid State Tank Girl) and, most recently, Young Tank Girl.

The Joan Jett reference gives us a chance to post some footage of The Runaways. Anyone complaining?

Oh, and Sideburn 18 will be out in mid-September. We're just putting some finishing touches to it. G

Vintage Girls

Another worthy photo book from acclaimed 'revivalist' and founder of Men's File Magazine, Nick Clements. His period correct tableaux style is sexy in a very classy polite way. Shot on location in England, France, Romania and the States. His obvious attention to detail is painstaking, but the final result seems effortless. Wether in film noire setting or holiday snap-shot, you feel as the viewer, intimately close to the subject matter.

This boxed edition also comes with a handy Roy Rogers denim pocket wallet. 196 dreamy 10x8" pages. BP

Dirty Hero Blog

The Dirty Hero blog is new to me, but it ticks a lot of boxes and I, clearly, still love a good blog.
Car, ladies, photography, art, music, bikes, fake tattoos on old photos of iconic celebrities, weird Ghanaian film posters, worst ever record covers... It's stuff some of you might have seen elsewhere but swept together and well-presented (I'm not using the 'c' word).
Dirty Hero finally made me realise what all the fuss about Elizabeth Taylor was too. G

Day Job

My 6 year-old daughter has a book called "What Does Daddy Do?" where the main character tries to explain to her class-mates what exactly her Daddy does for a living. In the face of her friends whose Dads all hold down 'normal' jobs she initially struggles before verbally painting a colourful and heroic picture. I'm not sure if my daughter's version would be so rosy considering the amount of time I seem to be chained to the computer of late. But last week I did have the pleasure of dusting off my studio equipment to go and shoot the new Norton Domiracer prototype at the Donington factory as a cover story for Café Racer Magazine.

Even with all the cash I've been saving recycling zipties, I don't think I will be investing it in a £22,000 Domiracer despite its good looks. Although the real bike still only exists on paper, most of the proposed 50 production bikes have already been sold to prospective customers.
