Poisunday Ivy :: Imaginext Poison Ivy and More Coming Soon!

Action Figure Insider recently revealed some exciting upcoming Imaginext DC Super Friends sets, and the biggest highlight was this two-figure set that includes Poison Ivy! In a series with only three females so far (Catwoman, Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn) another female is BIG NEWS, and Poison Ivy is a welcome (if surprising) fourth female choice to add to the line-up. The set also includes Scarecrow, both brand new figures and both figures I will buy the second I see them available!

Also revealed is a new Batmobile with an all new Batman figure included. This new Imaginext Batmobile joins the roster as the fourth or possibly fifth Imaginext Batmobile design, and is clearly influenced by the Batmobile from the Arkham Asylum/Arkham City video games. I need this one!

Batman's Batpod Batcycle is also all new, as is the New 52 influenced Batman included with it. Geez, I need this too!

A Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle and Beetle-Mobile was also revealed...

...as well as a New 52 version of Martian Manhunter and a bendable Plastic Man! This set is also very tempting. Looks like I'll be adding a handful of new Imaginext toys to my (and my daughter's) collection very soon. Some of these are labeled as Target exclusives in the images, and although the Poison Ivy/Scarecrow set isn't labeled as such, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a Target exclusive as well. I'll be sure to post as soon as I find it and let everyone know!

Blue Beetle :: Brave and the Bold Style

The Brave and the Bold action figure line released a few versions of the 'new' Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes during it's short run, each with slight paint mods. This one originally came in a two pack with Kanjar Ro and I believe was given to me by Jboy of Revenge From the Cosmic Ark years ago.

I liked Jaime's characterization in the show and think his Blue Beetle is a great character as well, so I am glad to have a Brave and the Bold version of him in my collection. The 'hex holes' concept really works for his mech-suit-like Blue Beetle costume, as he was constantly 'transforming' or creating weapons with his suit in the show.

As with Metallo, I wouldn't consider Blue Beetle one of the best of the line, but he's a good figure and a great character and I imagine he appealed to kids quite a bit, which is probably why Mattel saw fit to release him so many times.

Meet the Beetle

After months of searching and not finding, I finally have in my possession a DC Universe Classics Blue Beetle!

I love the Ted Kord Charlton Comics version of Blue Beetle. This figure even has a holster on his hip which holds his "B.B." gun and snaps closed to keep it securely in place! Keen!

Unfortunately, I have a love/hate relationship with DC Universe Classics which is quickly souring into a hate/hate relationship. The toyline is extremely well designed and the characters are true to their comic book appearances, and so many fan-favorite characters are filling out the line. Add to that awesome "Collect and Connect" bonus figures, and it should be a no-brainer hit.

Sadly Mattel is poorly managing the line with record level QC issues, piss poor distribution and Walmart exclusive waves getting into the hands of more scalpers than fans, it's near impossible for an average joe or even a hardcore toy fan to complete a wave and get a whole Collect and Connect figure built, let alone get their hands on all the figures they want in any given wave.

Blue Beetle came out in wave 7. Wave 10 is reportedly hitting stores now (Walmart stores only however - Wave 10 being an elusive-exclusive wave.) That's three waves ago, and I never saw him at retail. I had to get him from a fellow collector living somewhere in the mid-west. By the way, I've only seen Wave 8 figures once (not all of them mind you) and reports have Wave 9 suffering some sort of "we didn't make enough" issue and tons of online pre-orders have been canceled. I won't even get into my experiences with the handful of figures I have from waves 1-6. Way to go Mattel - no toyline should be this hard to get. Seriously.

Anyways, Blue Beetle is awesome and although I am seriously considering backing away from active pursuit of DCUC, I couldn't pass up the chance to add the character to my collection. Mattel, you're dang lucky to have the DC license, because it's the characters and their decades-long mythology that gets people buying your toys, not your business model.
