Shadow Ops Black Helicopter Strikeforce by Tim Mee

In addition to the Bucket of Army Men they recently sent me, Tim Mee also sent along this Shadow Ops Black Helicopter Strike Force pack!

Black helicopters? Cool! Let's investigate this bag like Scully and Mulder!

Up first is this Blue Thunder/Airwolf type helicopter. Honestly, I know nothing about helicopters beyond pop culture, which would make the helicopter-flying branch of my family (yes there is one) ashamed. But they probably know little to nothing about superheroes, so, well, they win because their knowledge is marketable.

Oh well.

Next is a more 'Huey' type chopper. I am seriously just going to slap some yellow oval bat symbol stickers on these things so I can have a couple unique Batcopters in my collection!

The set comes with two choppers (with rotating blades) and six little black police figures. I like to give these generic guys individual names, so come along for the ride:

Sergeant Shouty McBullhorn. Codename: 'Whispers.'

Officer Cecil B. DeRadio. Codename: 'Handheld.'

"HANDHELD! HANDHELD! CALL IN THE CHOPPERS! WE'VE GOT A JAYWALKER ON 38TH AND MISSION STREET!"

"We're already here, 'Whispers.' You don't have to yell."

Officer Elbow Jones. Codename 'Ninety-Degrees.'

Lieutenant Quincy Magoo. Codename: 'Longshot.'

Officer Ollie Slick. Codename: 'Puddle-Jumper.'

Officer Leslie Kneelson. Codename: 'Stubby.'

You can get your own pack of Shadow Ops Helicopters and Officers at Amazon! DO IT!

Tim Mee Bucket of Army Men

The fine folks at VictoryBuy sent along the Tim Mee Bucket of Army Men for review, so let's bust this bad boy open and see what's inside!

ZOMG it's chock full of Army Men!

48 soldiers to be precise, along with a mini mountain, a couple flags, a tank, a sticker sheet and two jet fighters!

And you thought buckets were only good for holding fried chicken!

The F-14 is basic but cool. I can hear the Nintendo Top Gun video game theme song now!

But seriously, Top Gun can suckit - the F-15 was always the jet for me. BOOOMBS AWAAAAAY!

As longtime fans of Toyriffic know, I can't get enough of the Tim Mee Battle Mountain (it's the backdrop for nearly every shot I take!) so it goes without saying (BUT I'LL SAY IT ANYWAYS!) that the mini mountain is my favorite part of this bucket! Now my pics can have a great big grey plastic rock in the background AND the foreground. SWEET!

Looks like The Tans have the high ground...call in the heavy artillery!

The Greens get the tank, while The Tans obviously got the aircraft. WHO WILL WIN?!?!

If you want your own bucket (*fired chicken not included) go git it on Amazon!

Rescue Copter Sea King Helicopter and Troops by Tim Mee

Little Green (or in this case Tan) Army Men. Probably one of the most ubiquitous toys of the past few generations. They are just so versatile. They are action figures, they are background builders, they are firecracker fodder. We all had billions of them and...hey, is that a cowboy over there?!?! Intern, do your job and get that guy outta here! We're talking about Army Men today!

This is the Tim Mee Rescue Copter Sea King and Soldiers set. It comes with 24 soldiers and this awesome helicopter.

Now while I know I owned hundreds if not thousands of Army men as a kid, I never had a vehicle as large as this helicopter. I had the jeeps and the tanks, and sometimes a raft or other watercraft came in those packs mom would buy on those random grocery trips, but I don't think I was even aware that there were vehicles like this available.

Sure, it isn't to scale, but it does have an open door so you can stuff your Army men inside. Or whatever other little toys you might wish to give a helicopter ride to. And the propeller and rotor spin too. A simple but fun addition to your little plastic Army.

My favorite Army man when I was a kid was always the Bazooka Dude. Because...Bazooka! This guy could blow the entire enemy force to smitherines with one shot!

'Come on, Bazooka Dude...let's wrap this offensive up quick. I have a date tonight.'

Corporal Stabby is a fun one too. He ran out of bullets and is putting that bayonnete to good use. 'Anyone up for shish-kabobs?'

'Yeah honey, I know. I know. Yes. Mmm hmmm. I know. Okay, I'll grab some milk on the way home. Yeah, it shouldn't be much longer. Sarge called in Bazooka Dude. Huh? Well, I don't know if he's single, but I'll ask...although I don't think your sister is his type...no, she's fine...she's great. No no no, I don't mean...I didn't mean...ok ok ok...hey can we talk about this later? I really have to get back to wor...hello? Hello? Honey?

Damnit.'

Little Green Army Men...Imaginext Style!

Fisher-Price's Imaginext toyline has been pumping out Toy Story themed figures and sets for a while now. I see them whenever I look for the Imaginext DC superhero offerings, which is often. Lots of cute and cool stuff, but nothing has 'jumped out at me.'

Until now.

My limited familiarity with the series meant I was taken completely by surprise when I saw these Imaginext 'Army Men' the other day. Even though the ubiquitous Little Green Army Men have made many appearances in Toy Story themed toy sets (including Lego) over the years, it still never ceases to amaze me when they transcend their original cheap plastic forms and appear re-imagined yet exactly how they should be all at the same time.

So meta!

Like most red blooded American boys I had hundreds, maybe thousands of Little Green Army Men throughout my childhood, so seeing them re-imagined in the Imaginext style tickles me to no end!

The set comes with a Medic, a Soldier, a mine detector, binoculars and a cot. Each figure also has a removable 'base' so they can appear like your regular green army men or it can be removed so they can be used in Imaginext vehicles and playsets. Brilliant!

No weapons, but what do you expect from a pre-school line in 2013? Regardless, the play possibilities are near endless with these guys.I can just imagine them sweeping the living room floor for mines and hauling away the dead undead on their cot. Good times!

By now I know you are wondering: what is up with that price tag? Now THAT'S a story:

I found these at Target a couple weeks ago, just lying on a random toy aisle shelf. It was the only set of Imaginext Army Men and I did not see a shelf or peg with a price for them (and at the time they did not have a price tag on them,) so I sought out the 'price checker' machine to see what they were going for. The price checker showed that the figures were not in the system.

Pro tip: if a toy you want is not in the system, take it to the front. Sometimes you can get a better than retail deal if the checker can't find an actual price and just throws a number out to make the sale. Although sometimes they find the right price, and sometimes they throw a higher number out too. It's a crap-shoot, but it can pay off, and what's the worst that can happen? You alerted them to an item not in their system. Good karma. It's a win for them (they find out about the item,) and for you (you sometimes get a good price or good karma at the very least.)

This time it payed off for me, but in a very odd and unexpected way:

So I took the figures to the front. The checker couldn't find it in the main system either. She was very helpful, asked the other checkers around, and offered to go to the back etc to find the price. By then the effort wasn't worth it any more, so I said 'no thanks' and proceeded with my other purchases.

I returned to the same Target the other day and while perusing their clearance aisle, I saw what I assume was the same pack of Army Men with a clearance tag on them. And the price? $1.26?!?! The tag even says 'Was $5.00' which is off by a few bucks to begin with.

I suppose an employee later found the set up front behind the registers and thought it may have been a return or that there was something wrong with it. I can further speculate that they saw two of the 'same' figure in the pack and without looking any closer figured that a customer had pulled the old 'Toy-Aisle Troll' switcharoo before returning the set (see cardback below to further cement that theory), but that's all mere conjecture.

Either way I guess not finding it in the system led them to come up with a ridiculously low price and they just tossed it in with all the other clearance toys, where I later happened onto it again and GLADLY paid the buck twenty six! I'd almost feel guilty but for the fact that all I did was ask about the price of a product that was not in their computer system. They did the rest and I could care less what their mindset was now that I have these cool Army Men!

To add oddness to non-injury, I wonder how Disney feels about shilling the characters of their now direct rival DC Comics? I don't know how 'across the board' this error is, but it's funny to see 'Disney/Pixar Toy Story' logo above Batman and friends! This isn't a mere packaging error, it's a fulll on print error, and a big one!

Until I look into this error further and determine how common it is or isn't, I think I'll keep this set packaged up. Heck, maybe the error is why Target put the set on clearance? Does anyone know what's up with this? UPDATE: I've personally seen this set now on three occasions; each time it has the Batman line image on the back. I have not noticed this error on any other Toy Story themed figure sets.

Whatever the case may be, I now have a cool toy, a cool error package, and a cool story...all for $1.26. CHEAP!

Little Green Skater Men

I recently spotted these cool new toy Skateboarders over at Dan's Toy Museum and simply had to get my hands on some of my own!

Little Green Army Men meets your local skate park. The Original AJ's Toy Boarders Skate Series One:

Each pack contains 24 little monochrome plastic skaters in eight different styles. If I was still in school I would totally be bringing these guys in my pockets and playing with them when I wasn't supposed to be.

Here's a look at all eight together.

The back of the card smartly informs you of who is who/who is doing what. Keen!

Let's look at each one individually, shall we?

'Smith'

'Tail Grab'

'Nose Grab'

'Cruising 2'

'Manual'

'Cruising 1'

'Ollie'

and last but not least: 'Pushing.'

"Whoahwoahwoah - LOOOOOOK OOOOUUUUUUT!"

CRASH!!!

Simple and fun and ready for your imagination to take over, these little green skater dudes are a great toy for anyone. Sometimes simple is better, and there's something just 'right' about the simple cast plastic figurine that kids today may be missing out on.

Get some of these to remind yourself and enlighten your kids.

My only complaint is that there are no girls in the series, but according to the creator of these guys, future series will include girl skaters!

There are also plans for future waves of surfers and snowboarders!

It's not easy being...

...green JLArmy men!

Tom of Freak Studios came though for me big time when he told me he had come across one of my biggest "wants" from Argentina - a handful of little plastic DC Superheroes!

I don't know the full story behind these guys, but I have seen them occasionally pop up online (often credited to toy manufacturer Gulliver and coming out of Argentina) and have always longed for some of my own. I've always loved the cheap charm of monochrome mini plastic figurines, and when those monochrome mini plastic figurines are fashioned after DC Superheroes I'm doubly in love!

So when I asked Tom if he'd seen any in his toy hunting travels and he showed me these, I just about flipped!

My personal favorite is of course Batman. Bats is looking regal in green, and although he looks like he suffered a broken nose in a scuffle with villainy, he's in great shape.

Next up is Superman, also in green. These guys are all set for the JLA St. Pat's party! Supes is in beautiful condition and I love how their symbols are embossed and their costume components and face sculpts are very well done. God I wish I could go down to the drug store and buy a bag of these guys for a buck. I'd install one of those ball-pit type things like at Chuck E. Cheese and fill it with thousands of these guys and swim in it daily like Uncle Scrooge...ahem...sorry.

Next up is Batgirl in pretty pretty yellow. Batgirl is a little rougher and the sculpt is less clean - she may be a later cast as the tool began to wear down.

Here's Flash one, we'll call him Barry. Barry is supposed to have wings on his ears and boots but only has one boot wing left. He has some other casting issues too but that's okay because he's still epically cool!

Flash two, we'll call him Wally, is a lighter green matching Batman and Superman and Daiquiri Ice ice cream from Baskin-Robbins! He also has only one boot wing. He outran the others.

Orange Robin aka Dickie is the cleanest casting of all. He's in great shape and must be one of the earliest figures here. He's flawless and clean and beautiful, just like a youthful ward should be.

Red Robin aka Jason is pretty rough. Probably a very late casting. I'd call a 1-900 number to put him out of his misery if DC asked me to. Red Robin is also completely void of his name on the base. All the other figures have their name cast into their base, but Robin here does not, and it isn't because it wore off the figure, it just isn't there. Maybe another clue as to where he falls in the history of these guy' manufacture.

"Dang! You look like you've been beat by a crowbar and left for dead, Jason! Maybe you should put a hood over your head. While you do that, I'll be Batman."

"Here we go round the mulberry bush!"

These guys are all unbelievably awesome! I need to go buy a bag of army men so I can have Batman and Superman and Flash and even Batgirl and Robin swing in and save the day!

I can't believe Tom was able to track them down for me so quickly and effortlessly. I'm beginning to think Argentina is the ultimate destination for a toy lover. Come to think of it, they probably have topless beaches too.

I'm booking my flight now, Tom; I hope you have a big couch!
