David Murray's -Live at Peace Church, Revisited,.an appeal to Collectors,(and a few Recollections by Dan Serro, its producer)

Recently, in email Conversations with Dan Serro former Kharma label boss and also  producer of David Murray's wonderfully vivid, viscerally exiting, live at the Peace Church, released in 1991, he shared some recollections about the circumstances relating to its creation,
which with his permission i'd like to relay here in edited form...

Before i do that i'll state that i also want to unashamedly ,advertise the fact that D.Serro ,is interested in releasing a couple of very worthwhile projects,on lp, including a duo from the 70's by Byard Lancaster and Yusef Yancy..
a costly exercise that requires a lot of money... i told Dan that we have no hesitation , advertising the fact that he has new Sealed copies of Live at peace church for sale for twenty dollars U.S , about half the price that second hand copies sell for.
My appeal is to Vinyl Aficionados, who might want to buy or are considering buying peace church , to do so directly from Dan Serro, in the knowledge that  you will be helping fund further releases.

i asked Him about the circumstances of its recording and release, saying i felt it was the most vivid aural document he had produced!
here are a few ruminations by him

"It was something that happened by accident.   I had just gotten my recording equipment and a friend told me that i should record this concert at the Peace Church.  I did not know who David was at the time.
He had just come from California and was new on the scene.   I asked if the musicians would mind and was told no. So i got a truck and took the equipment to the Church and set up.   Just 4 mikes and a small mixer with 4 inputs.
Many years later i played the tape for a Japanese  custmer who had come in from Japan and was at my place buying records.
By then David was famous and had a lot of records out.  the guy was a big Murray fan and he wanted me to put out the record.
I had ran out of money for the records i had pt out on Kharma and told him and he said he would go partners with me on it.
I contacted David and we made a deal (expensive) and then after paying David and the others i contacted the guy in Japan.
The Japanese had just had a big stock market loss and he said he couldn't come up with the money.
Since i had already paid David i could do nothing else but put the record out.
Limited by contract to 1500 copies.
I agree that it is the best job of recording i ever did....    Don't know if maybe it was the Church that helped or just the way i had miked them but it came out fantastic.

Things happen in strange ways sometimes.   Like the Burton Greene record.   Keshavan was not supposed to be on that record.
He got up on stage while i was recording and i was afraid i would not have enough to put the record out.
It was supposed to be a solo piano record. It is my second favorite record of all of the ones i put out."
Dan Serro

Again,Please consider buying a copy directly from Dan , who is a nice , approachable Man, in the knowledge that you will be helping fund worthwhile projects.
he can be contacted at.

Narada Burton Greene-The Past is also the Future-1979

Monsieur, Just one more wafer thin slice of.....another wonderfully eclectic piece of the 70's Solo B.Greene , puzzle, the usual mix of bop tunes, free improvisation, compositions , with a little Dadaism thrown in!
Check out "Milestones"and you'll no what i mean.....

We hope in all sincerity that the many Greene albums here will whet your appetite for more recent stuff, Greene also has a Klezmer ensemble , which is a lot of fun!

An interesting ,Paris Transatlantic interview,,
Some great CD's out, on C.I.M.P , Cadence, and NoBuisness, among others! (incidentally though..the Cimp Cadence , Klompfoot site is still down)

We've always felt Greene got short shrift in shitty coffee table Jazz guides , especially the Penguin Guide to Jazz which in the early editions seemed to dismiss him  almost entirely as uneven at best , or as a mediocrity at worst... Much loved classics like aquariana , only rating a meagre, 2 stars...and nothing much rating above that.

Fuck it , throw those old jazz guides away and lend Greene's genius your  Actuel ears!!

Burton Greene-Alan Silva-Sunny Murray-Firmanence 1979

Here's another superb piano trio, the beautiful Firmanence , on the Elusive, Fore (Rare tone,Music library) label , an independent Italian label , that briefly flourished    between 1980 and 1982, with a handful of releases ranging from Bill Dixon's Considerations , posted here a few years ago , to Scelsi string quartets, and a couple of albums by Alvin Curran.

A reunion of old friends , all Had previously played and performed together in the mid to late 60's,
its a subtle, restrained largely spacious , session consisting of one free improvisation, 3 tunes by Greene ,and one by Silva..
All in all , a spirited generous record by three venerable free jazz,21st Century Masters!
still out of print , and sadly unlikely to be reissued , who knows ?one can only hope for a deluxe complete edition!

Baden Baden-Free Jazz Meeting ,Dec 1971-Dudu Pukwana,C.Mcgregor,B.Phillips, T.Rypdal, B.Greene,M.Pilz, H.Joos, M.Falay.A.Skidmore

Here's ,an Incredible document of several
concerts recorded over a few days in Dec 1971.

Got this from an online acquaintance recently , who Sourced it from soul seek , Unfortunately all i have is an Mp3 Version ... we would certainly welcome a loss less share of this.. if anyone who has it is willing to oblige.

This set sort of ties in with the numerous, quality South African selections on offer here recently...

Not much point talking about the performers themselves ,since most have already been introduced here and elsewhere.
As far as i Know The free jazz meetings in Baden Baden ,were inaugurated in the mid 60'S by Critic Joachim E. Berendt.. and are still an occasional feature of the live scene...

Herbert Joos may be unfamiliar , he's probably best Known as a mainstay of the Vienna Art Orchestra , though back in the 70's , he made a few interesting solo albums ,and even recorded in trio format for FMP.

Fans of GUO, Alan Silva's Celestial Orchestra, Francois Tusques inter communal music and other Sonic LOVE fests will Find plenty to enjoy! .. a gamut ranging from 'Afro Rock,' Qwela Tinged pieces through to freebop, psychedelicious 'Bitches Brew 'style rock vamps... great percussion jams, and best of all ferocious Free improv over long droning horn ostinati ... this has it all!

Among the highlights featuring Some of the most electryfying performances in this set, for me are the trio-to quintet pieces featuring Terje Rypdal in completely free mode..taking it beyond Hendrix and even early Sonny Sharrocks fiercest sonic abstractions.
Splendid stuff which clearly presages the material on Rypdal's Great album 'What comes after' ECM 1031, a few of which pieces are present in skeletal form.

There's also a magnificent sprawling version of Barre Phillips, just 8.. (disc-2) which some may remember from the unique, Japo LP 'For all it is'( Japo, 60 003) recorded in March of the same year.

Grab it, enjoy.. and consider buying some of the performers discs .... Early Rypdal for example is on the whole pretty special.
Kudos to whomever taped this ... !

Presenting Burton Greene-1968(columbia lp cs 9784)320kbs

A christmas present from anonymous ..left in the comments to the previous post.
Dan Warburton-It's about time Presenting Burton Greene was reissued!

Burton Greene-Yes, it's enjoyed much more creative life in the cut-out bins than it ever did on the shelves! You know, that was the first time a Moog was used on a jazz record. I first met Robert Moog in 1963 at an electronics show in New York where he was running around saying "does anybody want to try my instrument?" I went up and introduced myself: "I'm a piano player, I can use that.." He said, "I can't offer you any money, but my wife is a great cook and if you feel like coming up to Ithaca, you're welcome to stay." Well, man, I hadn't eaten in a month so I said, "Erm, yeah I think I have a little free time at the moment..!" (laughs) and I went up to Ithaca and had a ball. And after that I was the synthesizer expert..! I tried to work a deal with Norman Seaman to do a solo Moog concert - that was even announced on my first quartet record - but he was losing money and it didn't happen. Anyway, John Hammond at Columbia had heard about that. "You're the cat who plays the synthesizer. Burton, you've got to add the synthesizer to that record." The record was already done, but he said, "we'll pay you to work on the synthesizer." The magic word. Five hours at $100 an hour. Normally I don't drink, but I remember that day when I went to the studio to get that extra $500 out of Hammond, I drank a quarter bottle of Scotch. I rolled in the studio like Napoleon (laughs). There were wall-to-wall Moogs in the studio and five assistant Walter Sears engineers each getting $80 an hour to help me create. They said: "What will it be sir?" I said, "I'd like a Sine Generator 17 to start with, please. 17B." "OK, sir, yes.." (imitates the noises of a Moog) I said, "Hmm it's a little thin.." They said "what about a BX.." I didn't know sine from sawtooth! Hammond was like, "that's my boy!" We ended up with all this weird shit and had to find a place to put it. I said to [drummer] Shelly [Rusten]: "There's a little part of your solo there that we can.. enhance." He said "don't you put that shit on top of my solo, man!" (laughs)

Burton Greene - Aquariana

Since there is a recent Burton Greene posting on this blog, I thought I'd recycle one of my old postings for the C#9 blog. This one did not make it to the front page, so it's quite possible it might have passed unnoticed by many.

Not one of the more significant releases in the Byg Actuel series in my view. I haven't quite made up my mind about this one. Very free-wheeling and blow-outish as was the style at the time. I believe I've read somewhere that Greene disowns his earliest recordings. Be that as it may, but here it is for others to have the opportunity to make up their minds about it.

Tracks:

1. Aquarius Suite
2. Out of Bartok
3. Two One-Two Vibrations

Full line-up for each track can be found in the attached scans of front, back and inner covers.

Recorded in June 1969 in the Saravah Studios, Paris.
