ICP 1967/68 HILVERSUM - ORIGINS OF ICP (expanded repost)

There have been several requests for a repost of the Instant Composers Pool recordings for Hilversum radio in the Netherlands in 1967. These were posted on the blog back in 2008, but unfortunately the links have lapsed since then. So only too happy to be able to respond.

Update from 17.04.2018
After correct silence requested a reup of these files I've searched on my hd's and found an expanded version.
Included in my repost are the years 1967 and 1968 (in flac) with more titles than listed below and two CDs with more music from the early years (in mp3).
Also the files are rearranged - haven't checked the infos..
So the repost is good for some surprises.

Additional info by the poster (on the Dime network):

The first ICP-sessions in 1967 are important documents for the second root of this very special kind of Dutch "free jazz": the tradition of the European contemporary written music. It's a strange kind of "Third Stream Music".

The recording sessions are also documents for the beginning international integration of the European Improvised Music scene with the guests from Germany, England and Denmark.

The technical quality of these pieces is poor due to my possibilities to receive these broadcastings in 1967/68. Specially the two live recordings (tracks 3 and 4) are something only for hard-core musicologists, because I got them by trade from an x-generation copy. But let's be happy that these recordings have survived and hope, that there will be someone who has received and preserved a better cut.

The recordings are giving an impression of the treasures which are still hidden in the Netherlands archives.

I hope that my seeds will motivate someone for digging there. It would be quite amazing to be able to listen to these unique beginnings of the contemporary jazz from the Netherlands in a good quality on CD or on Radio someday.

The Instant Composers' Pool Orchestra has a combative friendship at its heart - the Dutch duo of pianist and composer Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink has been going strong for more than forty years. Through the decades, they've nurtured an ensemble of musicians that keeps playful improvisation and creative composition at its core.

At this Guelph Jazz Festival concert, the players' solos butt up against each other, Han Bennink goes running across the stage and Misha Mengelberg keeps it all together at the piano.

New Movements in Jazz disc 1 ,1987, ICP orchestra plays Herbie Nichols (radio nederlands transcription service, 87.073/076) FLAC and LAME

Here’s some more icp , recorded live in 1983 and preserved by the netherlads radio transcription service, subsequently released as disc 1 of a 4 lp set called ‘new movements in jazz’. This is for J a friend who likes his Herbie Nichols. I have unfortunately not been able to find any references to this set on line, nor can I find appropriate scans or photos , my scanner is broken and I simply cannot afford to replace it. If anyone owns this and would like to share some scans of the extensive notes that go with the package ,please do so in the comments. I’ll be uploading the other lp’s in the set soon.

this is a particular favourite of mine ,as good as Nichols repertory gets, all of the arrangements are by mengelberg. By icp standards this may strike some as being too reverentially straight. I guess it hinges on just how much one likes nichols’s music . The info is not included in the files

ICP 10-TET - Tetterettet (1977)

There was a request for this one, so another dip into the archives.

This is a tentet recording from 1977, out on the ICP's own label, and comprising a, shall we say, star-studded bunch of continental free jazzers. Not your usual 40-minute blow-out, but a genre-bending exercise in burlesquerie, circus, old-style waltz, march tunes and what not. Not unlike what the Willem Breuker Kollektief would get up to (with which this troupe is strongly connected). Altogether jolly delightful, I'd say.

instant composers pool- hilversum radio broadcasts 1967-8, lame 320

Here are a couple of important broadcasts recently seeded on dime.

The music is stunning , but because the music was transefered from 2nd generation cassettes, I’ve decided to post these at 320.

Flacs aren’t going to improve the tape quality .
There remains a lot of hiss .
although once you screen it out its no longer a problem.

Mischa mengelberg and the instant composers pool need no introduction, being pioneers of what might now be called musical postmodernism by some.

These are very odd juxtapositions of all out total free improvisation, over subtle and distinctive minimal compositions that are very reminiscent of louiss andrierssen ,mengelbergs’s contemporary and friend.

I don’t know who seeded these , but thanks be to him or her , preserving such a magnificent early glimpse of the icp’s music.

and its a true marvel.

unfortunately this will probably not ever be reissued because the tapes of early icp albums have regretably been lost, (i dont know the full story of how that tradgedy happened, but merely read a referance to the fact some 15 years ago).

so here it is again, unlikely that this will ever be reissued, the master tapes of this and other I.C.P,releases have apparently been lost.
heres a review by none other than eugene chadbourne.

The name Instant Composers Pool has become synonymous with the extended ensemble of Misha Mengelberg, closely identified with both his compositions and his amusing outlook on life. These associations mean the use of the name in conjunction with this early-'70s recording may wind up hiding a crucial and astonishing document of group improvisation. The German, Dutch, and British scenes come together for this extended piece of music, spilling over two sides and titled simply "Groupcomposing." The players featured are some of the most famous and well respected from these countries, interacting in a hustle bustle of energetic attacks and contrasting moods that is bound to make fans of the European free improvisation scene jump up and down, and why not since the people downstairs are probably already horrified. Some of these listeners, again, think Instant Composers Pool and imagine written charts, somewhat similar to what Willem Breuker cooks up. This album is much more like the acclaimed Topography of the Lungs release from roughly the same era, and in fact that album's three participants are all on hand here: Derek Bailey playing electric guitar with a tone that will make listeners want to raid the fridge, Evan Parker demonstrating how to play frantically and subtly at the same time, and Han Bennink approximating a windstorm on percussion, all fairly well recorded for this period. Mengelberg is also more on the case than he often is in these types of settings — he uses space, but does more than just sit back smoking and watching the others freaking out. Paul Rutherford is great on trombone, and so is the drummer's underrated brother Peter Bennink on both dangerously addled alto saxophone and preposterous bagpipe. Followers of this admittedly very challenging music all have their favorite events where the music just seemed totally inspired, one startling scenario developing after another on-stage. That, boy howdy, is just what this record is like.
