COMPANY "BBC STUDIOS, MAY 1983"

While preparing this post I got confused a bit. Got this with a text file which states 11 items but my version has 12. The point of consideration are tracks 5 and 6. The list coming with the CD-r I've got years ago says there's only tr. 5 ( EP-HD-JL). But the folder contained also tr. 6 (EP-JL).
Maybe the performance of the trio was split into two separate tracks? And I cannot hear Hugh Davies on track 6. So it seems the way it is offered here might be accurate enough. Maybe someone can shed some light on this...Andy?

I left the short announcements which are obviously truncated - but better some meagre crumps of hopefully reliable information than none at all.
Interestingly this recording is not mentioned in Ben Watson's book on Derek Bailey, although it has a particular chapter on Company concerts and recordings.
There is an official Company recording from the I.C.A., London, 24-28 May 1983, which is also the only Company never reissued.

But the music is great and IMO that's what is important.

Company - Trios

Here's a contribution from Robert aka "amnesia" who has generously supplied the blog with some choice selections in the past and who sent me this gem in the post. Thanks Robert and if there's more (actually, there is, but we'll get to that) ...

Company - Live in London '79 vol.1

"For me, Company is still the best way for me to work. It has always
meant that, "in company" as opposed to solo, just with other people,
really. The only thing I could say about Company is that it is not solo.
I always thought the name was anonymous enough not to mean
anything." D.Bailey

this too, was a lucky introduction to free improvised music.
bought on the same day as the previously posted fictions .. and the bailey/holland improvised duets on ecm(which i no longer own) this one was a real revelation and remains one of my favourite incus sets.
a very luminous album ..that hopefully may one day see the light of day once more.
the incus back catalog in disarray now that derek's gone
who knows..

company- fictions 1977 incus.. flac and lame

An early improv purchase , thats long out of print and hasn’t seen cd reissue.
This is an often misunderstood album.. almost universally panned by critics who tend to miss the pervasive whimsy and obvious self parody.
In part it stems from the fact that each of the group read from Derek baileys book ‘improvisation its nature and practice in music’ as the music unfolds.
Nothing portentious or even remotely self important here though at times they appear to be hamming serious pretense..

Mengelbergs solo and interaction with coxhill( in particular) on side 2 where he builds an incredible solo which incorporates quotes and dissections of several Beethoven sontas,(including the’ hammerklavier’) seemingly tossing them all in a rhythmic blender.

Beautiful stuff.

Great to hear bailey, mengleberg, and coxhill together, I hadn’t listened to this in years .. what a joy !!!
