HUGH HOPPER MONSTER BAND :: French Tour 1974

Shortlived Monster Band was probably first HH's attempt to work with two bass format, what he did most succesfully many years later with Hughscore. The band sounds strong on Paris recording and also on unknown piece from Bordeaux, pairing of Elton Dean and Lol Cohxill works very well. Rest of audience recording from Poitiers I am sharing for posterity only (as it was seeded alltogether on Dime by our freind Propylaen in 2o12), because the amount of backround noise on these is really boring. First 4 recordings went through my mastering with much better result. Also included is single track of Paris FM recording from different source, which has some damage throughout, but is more complete and clean than Propylaen's version.

Soft Mountain - Soft Mountain - Hux Records 2003

After leaving Soft Machine, Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper tried to recreate groups in the same spirit like Soft Head or Soft Heap. All of these groups were interesting but none of them managed to reach the level of energy and creativity of Soft Machine Third. When I first listened to Soft Mountain I immediately felt that the energy of this band and its power was clearly close to the great era of Soft Machine even though the music is different. Tatsuya Yoshida and Hugh Hopper are particularly impressive during this powerful session.

This recording was previously shared as Hugh Hopper Quartet on IS contributions section. I think Elton is playing excellently here. I did what I can with improving muddy sound of this recording. Sadly, Keith's piano is underamplified, so we will probably never hear it as we want, but in the end it sounds surprisingly good to me. And more surprisingly, theme at the end of track 5 seems to me like being Gualchos from EDQ Silent Knowledge 1995 album!

I would also like to remind two albums that quartet made: 1976 Cruel But Fair on Compendium label (reissued on CD by One Way Records, now probably OOP) and 1977 Mercy Dash, which remained unsissued until 1985 release on Culture Press (which made also first CD reissue, second is out now by Gonzo Multimedia).

And coincidentally, I've just got the answer to my question, from where this good quality live recording on YT is originated. It was released as a bonus on Japanese paper-sleeve CD Cruel But Fair. So obviously there is another stuff!

Hugh Hopper-Lol Coxhill, Mad Axe Quartet-Bull and Gate-London , 3-9-1985, Aud

A slight change of pace .... (4..Andy and lucky)
here is an ecclectic typically canterbury style ,at times bucolic romp through the sublime and the ridiculous..
in the Form of the one and only performance ever by Mad axe, a band convened by the Late Hugh hopper ..

This sits stylistically somewhere between the frolicsome free floating RnB of Delivery , and the more complex less whimsical more intensely organic 'free' fusion of soft heap (another Hopper band, which Hewins was also in for a time...)

As great as the band is , the real interest for me is of course Lol Coxhills playing ,His distinctive trade mark slippery soprano, joyously romping and weaving insousciantly through every stylistic variation!..there are few things in this world more fulfilling and Beautiful!

from a purely technical standpoint Coxhill also registers, better than the others on these averagely, recorded but very listenable , highly entertaining 2 sets

recording is slightly reverberant and bright , but a whole lot better sounding than the later gen version thats been floating around on dime and elsewhere(as mp3's)

there are times when Hewins guitar tone sounds so much like an electric piano ,its uncanny .. that's mostly down to the sound quality of the acoustics of the room.

this must have been a Fun gig
Lol coxhill .. long may he Play !!!

ENJOY!!

Hugh Hopper, Mad Axe quartet

Bull and Gate-London , 3-9-1985
Hugh Hopper-e bass
Lol Coxhill-Soprano Sax, Voice
Mark Hewins-E Guitar
Dave Sheen-dr

2 sets , recieved in a trade ,

possibly from a first gen Master
or a good remaster of a Muddier version which was re-seeded on dime by someone(Lake Ogelton?)

Anyone wanting to hear more Coxhill, and Hopper together could do worse than checking out Hoppers 1984,which these days i think is reissued by Cuneiform... its superb.. one of the pieces played on this concert (miniluv.. is from that album)
