And now the same aforementioned friend brings us his rip of yet another mid sixties classic. Again taken from a well loved and played record. All the tunes here are C. Bley's save for Communications#7 which was recorded in Baarn, Holland, on 11th of january 1966.

My friend feels this is a very special record, with which I can only concur as I've said elsewhere. This entire Phillips series ,was briefly reissued (for about 2 minutes) in Japan, first on vinyl in the early eighties and then cd for even less time in the early 90's. Those are now very high ticket items which I certainly cant afford. When will larger lables ever learn that there is a market for this stuff? I'd be the first to replace worn vinyl and rips from same, but I'm sure as hell not prepared to fork out up to USD 150 for a used cd.

 Just to add briefly to the last paragraph, the files are from the 1990 cd.

An Alternative to the rip kindly shared here by Chris , my rip from a scratchy 70's reissue on semi bootleg label..Trip..
A great record and one that's been surprisingly unissued on CD... something which we deplore!
Perhaps someday , the boffins who curate Mosaic records might consider issuing a deluxe Box-Set , of Bley's important  60's Trio recordings.

Paul Bley Trio-Canada 1968

For an Australian friend...
A great Paul Bley trio session, put out by radio Canada international transcription service, recorded in Montreal in December 68, i believe this was Bley's last  entirely acoustic release from the sixties and for some time until ECM'S, Open to Love, last in a glorious sequence spanning ten or so indispensable records, and one of the few which has never made it to cd ..

Four great tunes by Annette Peacock , his wife at the time, with Mario Pavone's only stint in Bleys acoustic trio.
 For some inexplicable reason this album is not mentioned In the Paul Bley entry on the Jazz discographies project site.
this album's been posted as mp3's at lucky psychic hut , and may well still be available somewhere in that format.

Paul Bley & Anette Peacock- Dual Unity 1972

 This one goes out to Brother H, by way of potential inspiration!

A pioneer of the use of Synths in Jazz, along with Sun Ra , Burton Green , and Masahiko Satoh....
Bley made several recordings with Peacock in this lyrical spacey free style, this is very similar territory to the better known , America lp, Improvisie-(AM6121),

More concise, and probably heavily edited from longer live performances , this has the added bonus of featuring more of Annette Peacocks , distinctive voice, seemingly pitched somewhere between , insouciant  bored irony , and heartbroken agony...that voice,so  deceptively sensuous often evokes a certain detached unexpected froideur,  like the abrupt sinking feeling of being sexually rejected, by someone you thought was warmly inviting seduction.... and later perhaps finding out , the said object of desire got off on your humiliation.

Bleys incredible solo on Gargantuan encounter, is a marvel ,threatening to recklessly career out of control and fly off the rails into some bottomless abyss.. hell of a ride,

ripped from a friends well worn copy years ago , its last reissue  on cd was  in Japan ,2 decades ago...
would be great to be able to buy a Bley produced cd of further contemporaneous live material  in this vein!

CBC-CBOF fm "Jazz Sur le Vif" live-to-air '07/07/91

Thirty years on from their groundbreaking trio of the early sixties, this session seems much less iconoclastic and more melodic. Swallow, now playing guitar-like electric bass, gives the band a different dimension. There's a lovely version of the standard "I can't get started" - the sort of thing you wouldn't expect in the 1961 performances. It strikes me as three guys who've done it all and just want to enjoy playing together with old friends.

I don't know what the motivation for reforming was, or why they didn't carry it on for much longer. In fact information on the net about this trio is a bit sparse. It'll be interesting to hear if anyone can shed any light on it.

This was broadcast on a French-Canadian radio station, sound quality is excellent. Thanks to "nocturne" for seeding.

Jimmy Giuffre Trio (with Paul Bley, Steve Swallow) - Live Austria 1961 (Radio broadcast)

Giuffre's first trio comprised himself, guitarist Jim Hall and a number of different bass players. The bass was subsequently replaced by valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer.

The second trio, of which this recording is an example, was formed in 1961. It has often been described as chamber jazz. Listening to it you can easily imagine that Anthony Braxton might have taken some inspiration from Giuffre's playing. Commercially, they weren't successful. They recorded the excellent album "Free Fall", but disbanded in 1963 after, it is said, that they made only 35 cents each from one gig. They were playing stuff that was year's ahead of what the US audience would listening to. Perhaps if they'd upped sticks and moved to Europe they may have been part of the free jazz scene that developed there in the 60s.

I guess that they each went there separate ways, Guiffre largely to teaching and writing music. The trio reformed briefly in the 1990s and did a European tour, but Parkinson's disease forced Giuffre into retirement.

our friend brent, brings us a reupload of a great concert, featuring a performance of the entirety of paul bley's great improvart album "turning point".

brent had originally uploaded this elsewhere at 160kbs, i think he was at this concert , or one by this group elsewhere although he did not record it.

(The accompanying photo, courtesy Michelle Harris & Pitchfork, is from a performance of the same pieces the following summer in Chicago's Union Park.) So far as I know this is the only recording of Cline & Parker playing together. I spoke to Parker a month ago about this session and he said that unfortunately there were no plans for the group to do a studio recording. Given the quality of Cline's other tribute records (*Interstellar Space*, *New Monastery*), it's a real shame they weren't able to put anything together.

Audience recording, but the sound quality is very good.

It's great to hear these two legends still performing so well. I see from his discography that Konitz made his first recording the year I was born, and I'm not exactly in the first blush of youth. He has played and recorded with Bley many times, so I guess they know each other's music very well. I don't know why they decided to include a bass player, I think he's sometimes a little intrusive at times during the more delicate interplay.

This is definitlely one to savour over the Christmas holiday, so send the wife and kids out shopping with the mother-in-law, fill your glass, put another log on the fire and enjoy.
