STEVE LACY "STALKS" (COLUMBIA, 1975)

 Heres something that has been requested repeatedly in the comments on Lacy posts ( especially by brent/ 1001)
One of Lacy’s finest from the period, with masters like Togashi and Yoshizawa on board it couldn’t be otherwise.
This is unaccountably rare , ive only ever seen the one copy.

(Update)
This was posted for the first time in January 2008 by Sotise from a cassette he got from a friend.
I've hitchhiked the post - here's a reup in flac from another rip...

Roswell Rudd ~ John Tchicai ~ Steve Lacy ~ Kent Carter ~ Steve McCall ~ RAI Big Band; Teatro dell’Opera, Rome; 24th March 1980

In 1980, the Italian radio programme Un Certo Discorso organised and broadcast eleven concerts with several of the leading jazz musicians at that time, together with the RAI big band. Several of the broadcasts of these concerts have already been shared on this blog. The RAI3 programme Battiti has been revisiting several of these performances recently, including one that has not appeared either here or on Dime. So here it is - it's just great to hear Steve Lacy on such ecstatic form, together with John Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter and Steve McCall, and of course, the RAI big band. As little editing as possible has been done, to give continuity to the actual concert; any corrections to the setlist or other details are welcome.

La foresta nello zoo / The Forest and the Zoo

John Tchicai saxophone
Steve Lacy soprano saxophone
Kent Carter bass
Steve McCall drums

CARLA BLEY, MICHAEL MANTLER AND STEVE LACY- JAZZ REALITIES 1966

Here's a repost of a post from the early days of the blog. The text below is as it was posted back then. New links have been added at the bottom of the comments section.

And now the same aforementioned friend brings us his rip of yet another mid sixties classic. Again taken from a well loved and played record. All the tunes here are C. Bley's save for Communications#7 which was recorded in Baarn, Holland, on 11th of january 1966.

tracklist:

1/ Doctor
2/ Oni Puladi
3/ J.S.
4/ Walking Batterie Woman
5/ Closer
6/ Communication No 7

Mike Mantler: trumpet;
Steve Lacy: soprano;
Carla Bley: piano;
Kent Carter: bass;
Aldo Romano: drums.

Fontana 1966/1990

My friend feels this is a very special record, with which I can only concur as I've said elsewhere. This entire Phillips series ,was briefly reissued (for about 2 minutes) in Japan, first on vinyl in the early eighties and then cd for even less time in the early 90's. Those are now very high ticket items which I certainly cant afford. When will larger lables ever learn that there is a market for this stuff? I'd be the first to replace worn vinyl and rips from same, but I'm sure as hell not prepared to fork out up to USD 150 for a used cd.

 Just to add briefly to the last paragraph, the files are from the 1990 cd.

Steve Lacy Three-The Lost Tracks from Capers,1979

I was pretty pissed off years ago when i bought the CD, New York capers and quirks, only to find that almost half the material had been left off including my favourite piece "the crunch" where Ronnie Boykins seems most inventive(and audible), i had given the scratchy old beige soft cover double lp away , because it sounded muddy, and i'd ordered the cd from a shop..
This reissue box edition from 1981 is a huge sonic improvement , on the first edition.
Boykins is not as audible as on the cd versions.. but otherwise the sound is great..
Anyone know why this material hasn't been reissued?

The Crunch is particularly great one of those  sprawling blow out monsters, like the thing, where Lacy stretches his extended technique to the limit.
Dennis Charles Beating out Melodic Martial tattoo like rhythms in unison with Lacy is a Joyous aural feast, a pity this trio didn't record more!
recorded live at soundscape by Peter Kuhn on December 29-1979

MAL WALDRON SEXTET "UNNA 1979"

This concert in northern Germany happened more than one year after "Moods" ( here) was recorded.
The line-up is quite similar as for this concert - Manfred Schoof plays for Terumasa Hino and Jimmy Woode for Cameron Brown.
All songs are also on the LP/CD which I recommend to buy if you do not have it yet.
For me it's a masterpiece.
You can listen to both recordings - a rare chance for examining the differences and similarities...

Steve Lacy-Raps 1977, Adelphi 5004 LP

A great Steve Lacy Lp that's unlikely to be reissued anytime soon, this one has never achieved the cult status
of much of Lacy's contemporaneous output , not at all obscure or rare it can still be purchased for under 20 bucks..

Recorded in New York , Little Known bassist Ron Miller,(Same Guy who's on Dave Burrell's After Love, presumably)subs for J.J.Avenel,an intriguing player who sounds right at home...
Terrific versions of The Throes, Blinks, and No Baby..

I Know this has been around before as Mp3's... worth a listen!
Enjoy!
