UPCOMING & RECENT RELEASES XIX

The Corbett vs. Dempsey label keep going on reissuing rare and very interesting music. On June they will publish two cd reissues of classics lp from the Instant Composers Pool.
The first is the ICP Tentet « Tetterettet » with rare appearance from Gilius Van Bergeyk, Peter Bennink and also Alan Silva and John Tchicai to name a few.

The second cd reissue is the fantastic trio of Dudu Puckwana, Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink, the great meeting between south African saxophonist and the two co-founders of the ICP.

I have also recently discovered this limited edition cd only available through the record store Downtownmusicgallery. It is a live performance done in 2012 in the store with Adam Lane, Oliver Lake, Viny Golia and Ross Hammond. Obviously it is a limited 100 copies cd.

Roswell Rudd ~ John Tchicai ~ Steve Lacy ~ Kent Carter ~ Steve McCall ~ RAI Big Band; Teatro dell’Opera, Rome; 24th March 1980

In 1980, the Italian radio programme Un Certo Discorso organised and broadcast eleven concerts with several of the leading jazz musicians at that time, together with the RAI big band. Several of the broadcasts of these concerts have already been shared on this blog. The RAI3 programme Battiti has been revisiting several of these performances recently, including one that has not appeared either here or on Dime. So here it is - it's just great to hear Steve Lacy on such ecstatic form, together with John Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter and Steve McCall, and of course, the RAI big band. As little editing as possible has been done, to give continuity to the actual concert; any corrections to the setlist or other details are welcome.

BINDER QUINTET WITH JOHN TCHICAI (KRÉM, 1982)

heres a serenely beautiful , bittersweet music that’s very much a central European folk inflected fusion with free jazz.

I know nothing of the Hungarian ‘binder quintet’ beyond this one lp ive owned for 20 years.
A unique gem ,that’s worn very well and is unlikely to ever be reissued on cd.

There is no date at all on the lp, late seventies early eighties seems very likely.
This was put out on KREM the recording label of the state controlled Hungarian national radio broadcaster.

Enjoy

>The text above is by sotise which posted this gem almost at the beginning of this blog ( 9th November, 2007!). And here I discovered the music for the first time in 2009 or so...

John Tchicai with Strings

This was discreetly slipped into the comments section in response to a request, but I think it deserves front page treatment. The title might hint at a string quartet or something even larger such as a symphony orchestra, but the closest you get to strings here are guitar, piano and harpsichord (and various samples). A somewhat curious and intriguing item in the Tchicai discography. Serene and sacral soundscapes; wistful; spectres of wide openness; church-like; hymns; heavenly or perhaps heaven-bounnd and a poem recited by Tchicai right at the end. A fitting epitaph of sorts. Unusual, but delightful.

Tracks:

1. Lied
2. Test-Piece 1
3. Cross Ness
4. Hymn
5. Solemn
6. Formalism
7. Test-Piece 2
8. Lullaby
9. These Pink Roses (words by Steve Dalachinsky)

Recorded in London in 2005

John Tchicai: bass clarinet, alto sax and voice
John Coxon: electric guitar, piano, harpsichord, samples, cymbals, bowls
Ashley Wales: Samples, trumpet, bass drum, steel bowls, percussion, bowed cymbal
Mark Sanders: drums and percussion on tracks 2, 4 and 5

The two chaps accompanying Tchicai made up the drum-and-bass outfit Springheel Jack before venturing into freer terrain. This one appears to be out of print, but other items on the Treader label can be found here:

Burnin Red Ivanhoe w/John Tchicai - live in Berlin 1969

Here's a true golden nugget from the past: The Danish band Burnin Red Ivanhoe recorded in 1969 and featuring John Tchicai on most of the tracks. There seems to be a paucity of old BRI photos, so the above pic is the cover of their second album. There's also one on the inside of their third album, WWW, the band looking very laid back in the midst of scenic pastoral idyll. Typical of the times.

The main reportoire is from their first album, M144, which looks something like this:

(pic courtesy of Pius-rock who's asking a ridiculous price for this item - I haven't scanned my own copy)

BRI was among the first to mix rock with jazz inflections, well in evidence on these live numbers. Karsten Vogel was eventually to break out of the band and start a more direct jazz fusion outfit under the name of Secret Oyster, which made some albums during the 70s whereas BRI were to continue in a more straight rock direction.

As said, all numbers with the exception of "You Got Enough" are on their debut double album on Sonet. At this early point, the tunes are sung in Danish, but by their second album they had converted to English, though the instrumental prowess of this band is probably stronger than their texts. There does seem to be a kind of narrative structure to M144, related to knights and medieval times, but don't quote me on it.

This was recorded off a Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg radio programme back in 04, so thanks to omega 10 for sharing it via Dime.

I do have the first three BRI albums on Sonet, but I believe most of it is out on cd by now. If any can convince me otherwise, I could always blog 'em.

Regular followers of this blog will have noticed that we have blogged the John Tchicai Cadentia Nova Danica in the past, and a perusal of the sleeve notes finds that both Vogel and Menzer participated on that record and there is a mention of this particular Berlin concert there, too.

So, a nice historical document, then. Suffice it to say that they were regulars in town and I saw them several times back in my late teens. Ah, memories ...

John Tchicai - Cadentia Nova Danica (1968)

After a number of succesful years during the early 60s in New York, where he recorded with, among others, Coltrane and Shepp, Tchicai returned to his native Denmark and formed the group Cadentia Nova Danica. This band made two recordings, of which this was the first. The band was enlarged considerably for the second, Afrodisiaca.

The line up (see back cover in scans) was mainly comprised of Danish musicians, none of whom, to my knowledge, subsequently became known outside Scandinavia (at least in the jazz field, although I gather the second altoist, Vogel, became well-known in progressive rock). The music on the recording, which was done live in a hall in Aarhus, Denmark, has a strong Scandinavian feel to it (not surprisingly). Tchicai plays some nice solos, but it is the ensemble that makes this a terrific recording.

Ripped from vinyl at VBR quality 0. Links in Comments.

New York Art Quartet - Mohawk (1965)

I think this may have been posted before on a blog, but not for some time, so I guess some people don't have it. It was a short-lived quartet, which produced only two recordings to my knowledge, of which this is the second. The quartet, led by alto saxophonist John Tchicai, have a very distinctive sound, never reproduced by any other ensemble. The uniqueness of the sound comes from the collective interpretations of the tunes, rather from any long solos.
It is also interesting to note that all four members of the quartet are still alive and peforming (to my knowledge).
Line-up:
John Tchicai: alto sax
Roswell Rudd: trombone
Reggie Workman: bass
Milford Graves: percussion
