DAVID MURRAY AND LOW CLASS CONSPIRACY- FLOWERS FOR ALBERT( LIVE AT THE BIM HUIS AMSTERDAM AUG 18, 1977) LAME 320

stanley crouch, free jazz drummerman ?
Here’s a great one , from a very adventurous youthful david murray, this was a seasoned band, and it contains some of murrays most "out" playing ever, I have to confess im a huge fan of murrays , and this period from roughly 75- 82 produced some of the best so called “free jazz” tenor in the history of the music, this is well on par and in my view better than what people like gayle, and david s ware are now doing, somewhat different too, although theres no doubting albert aylers influence here(flowers for albert is a dedication to ayler)
1960’s sonny Rollins is also a huge influence.
With butch morris , fred Hopkins, and the great don pullen on board, you pretty much get the idea in advance that its going to burn red hot.
A lot of free jazz snobs who are suspicious of virtuosity and prefer a noisy staccato attack , and full on multi phonic assault, view murray as a sellout, I love (very selectively his later stuff too) and if possible I recommend to their attentions the very moving tribute to don pullen on diw called ‘the long goodbye’.

The real surprise for younger people here must surely be Stanley crouches’s presence as drummer with this band, crouch is now best known as a reactionary critic who dismisses cecil taylor as not being in the black music tradition at all, and who through his enormous power over the likes of protégés like wynton marsallis has spread his neo con dogma, throughout all mediums including television and film the most notorious example being his presence as eminence grise behind the scenes of ken burns series about jazz.

Crouch was once a stalwart of the loft scene, who though no where near as inventive and authoritative as milford graves , Andrew cyrille and sunny murray , or phillip Wilson(who also drummed with this group), none the less does surpassingly well.
This was originally released as 2 separate albums vol1 “penthouse jazz’ and vol2 “holy siege on intrigue”
This rip though was taken from the semi bootleg cd released in 1990 on the westwind label which is now out of print.

Here are the details

Drew Gress Quartet - Live Recording (about 2001, in London I think) ,lame

boromir said"I found a CD in a drawer that I'd burnt years ago. It was unlabelled, so I had to play it to find out what it was. It turned out to be a radio broadcast from around 2001, I think, Drew Gress Quartet. "

Drew Gress Quartet - Live Recording (about 2001, in London I think)

Drew Gress: bassTim Berne: alto saxCraig Taborn: pianoTom Rainey: drumshttp://rapidshare.com/files/40014590/DGress.rar.html FM broadcast ripped at 224kbps. About 1 hrs playing time, split into 2 untitled tracks. I don't know very much about Gress, but he seems to have played all over the place, including in Tim Berne's band, so perhaps this concert was Berne repaying the complement.

The weather's dried up a bit, but more rain is expected tomorrow. Low lying areas are still under threat as the rivers fill up off the hills.

Whit Dickey Quartet live at Vision Festival X on June 17 2005

heres another upload by 'boromir' ,

heres a spiel, from the all music guide
Free jazz drummer Whit Dickey first stepped into the spotlight as a leader with the release of his Transonic album from Aum Fidelity in 1998. Two years later, Wobbly Rail issued his Big Top release. Previously, he was best known for his solid work with Matthew Shipp and David S. Ware, with whom Dickey split in 1996. Early the following year, the drummer began composing the works that would be included on Transonic. Dickey penned all but two songs, "Kinesis" and "Second Skin," on the collection, and he even had a hand in those with the help of his fellow musicians on the album. The original compositions give a nod to the influence of "Criss Cross" and "Off Minor" from the legendary Thelonious Monk. Dickey recorded the album with the aid of Rob Brown on flute and alto saxophone, and Chris Lightcap on bass. In 2001, Dickey recorded half a dozen of his compositions with Mat Maneri, Shipp, and Brown under the name Nommonsemble, and put out Life Cycle through Aum Fidelity. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide

the Vandermark 5-live in london 2002

boromir said' I've upped the Vandermark 5 concert:- http://rapidshare.com/files/26284734/VDMLive.rar.html From a BBC Radio 3 broadcast in 2002 (London I think). 70 mins split into 7 tracksRipped at 192 Kbps.
A bit of radio crackle here and there otherwise good sound quality.

Personnel:Ken Vandermark: reedsDave Rempis: reedsJeb Bishop: tromboneTim Mulvenna: drumsKent Kessler: bass Really punchy stuff. Kind of hard bop, with tunes you can hum.

a lot of free, jazz fans dont appear to like vandermark very much, theres a tendency to see him as a populist, or is it the old canard that white boys simply dont swing.
something layed down as law by some of the hardliners in the second wave of sixties freejazzers and ascociated poets and critics.
archie shepp and if my memory serves me well even the great marion brown, were known to deplore the incursions of whitey on their turf.
sun ra never (with the sole ecseption of alan silva)used white folk in his bands ,not to mention some of the,( these days )unspeakable things he said about them.

all of this at the time reflected the fact no doubt that stan getz , gerry mulligan ,chet baker and bill evans ,as talented as they were ,were still getting most of the accolades and making most of the money.
they were posterboys, and from the mid fifties to the mid sixties probably the faces most associated with jazz in the majority white conciousness.

retrospectively we can see that in the avant guard on the fringes there had been great white mavericks, and eccentrics that also deserve to be celebrated ,contemporary jazz and improvised music would be very different had the likes of
mel powell, gil melle, george russell, jimmy guiffre(what a giant)steve lacy, carla bley, paul bley, roswell rudd, paul motian etc etc...,never appeared.

vandermarks a bit of a maverick and individualist as much as one can be in this era, but none of my jazz loving friends admire him or respect his work much, or even that of say mats gustafsson
whom he often plays with.

anyone whos a free jazz purist may disdain the vandermark 5, but heres no gainsaying vandermark's integrity or or the authority of his own dialect and idiom.
he even plays free jazz in its classic form ,really well when he feels like it.
CHECK OUT HIS RECORDS LIVE AT THE GLENN MILLER CAFE, AND THE ONE BY THE SAME GROUP(HIS TRIO+GUSTAFSSON) ON WOBBLY RAIL FOR EXAMPLE.
i personaly like a lot of his various projects
and yep im not kidding that attitude does still exist at least in my part of the world.

this will be my last post for a long while(at least of stuff ive got) my disc drive and also programs like audacity are out of action due to a fuck up by microsoft microshits' software department, any one having a windows xp operating system will know what im talking about.
i accidently turned on windows security updates and it screwed me, for what could be a long time .

reggie workman, andrew cyrille, Juhani Aaltonen ,live at St Peter's Church, New York, on 10th December 2006

hi,
another one from boromirs ,collection of recent broadcasts.
reggie workman and andrew cyrille are among the most important musicians to emerge in the 1960's
theyve both played with practicaly everyone of any note, in both mainstream jazz and improv contexts...
workman was for a time a member of john coltranes early sixties quartet, also from that period playing on very important albums by wayne shorter, lee morgan(search for a new land, one of morgans most exploratory records)joe henderson and so forth
in the early eighties workman seems to have done the opposite of what most players of his generation chose to do, in finding ever more challenging contexts , making an extraordinary run of albums under his own name for leo records and also the ny based postcards lable, culminating in one of the great free jazz albums of the late 20th century
summit meeting, with sam rivers, andrew hill, julian priester and pheeroan aklaff.
apart from those workman has on an off played with marilyn crispell, and contributed to a fine string of her records , on leo and music and arts...
master drummer andrew cyrille, started his recording career, with coleman hawkins ,and
walt dickerson, before playing on cecil taylors pioneering blue note lps, conquistador and unit structures and then going on to play and record with taylor for a further dozen years.
cyrille made 2 stunning albums on black saint with jimmy lyons in the late seventies as well as the essential album 'nuba'with both lyons and jeanne lee.
since then hes worked with david murray, oliver lake, irene schweitzer, peter brotzmann, anthony braxton and john tchicai among others.
dipmong....
juhani aaltonen i know very little about, exept that ive heard him on edward vesalas record's
so heres a little something from his website here
JUHANI AALTONEN, who started his musical career in the late 1950s, has been a big idol and role model for about every younger Finnish saxophone player. In the 1960s he played with the modernists of the time, ao. with Edward Vesala, Otto Donner, Heikki Sarmanto and Seppo "Baron" Paakkunainen. In 1968 he received the Georgie Award from The Finnish Jazz Federation.
In early 1970s Aaltonen joined Tasavallan Presidentti (The President of the Republic), a legendary (jazz)rock group led by the guitarist Jukka Tolonen. In 1974 he was one of the musicians founding UMO Jazz Orchestra. Internationally he played ao. with Graham Collier Big Band and, most noteworthy, with the Norwegian Arild Andersen Quartet which made two albums for ECM in the late 1970s.
Though Aaltonen appears on a great number of albums, the albums of his own have been rare, especially after Prana (w. Reggie Workman and Edward Vesala on Vesala’s Leo Records, 1981). The debut, Etiquette, came out in 1974. Strings, a collaboration with Otto Donner, was The Album of the Year 1976 chosen by the Finnish Broadcasting Company. A follower to that, Strings Revisited, was released in 2003 on TUM Records, the comparatively new leading Finnish jazz label. There’s also another TUM recording by him from year 2004, with Reggie..

brotzmann/mcphee quartet live in london 2001

hi all
here we have an item from 'boromirs tape collection of bbc broadcasts
, brotzmann's not exactly subtle on this, but the noteworthy textural interaction of the rythmn section magically offsets ,the ferocious constant intensity of the horns.
this may not be the best place to start with mcphee (it doesn't really display the wide range of his enormous gifts, but its an exiting if visceral listen.
personnel
peter brotzmann-alto, tenor saxes
joe mcphee-tenor sax
we are not sure who the drummer and bassist are , my guess is kent kessler-db
and michael zerang-drums
no track titles(sounds like one long improvisation of 50 minutes + a short track which starts with a mcphee tenor solo then cuts out after 10 minutes or so)
if you like this you'll probably love 'tales out of time' the 2002 brotz/mcphee collaboration on hatology .
i dont know whether thats in circulation ,if not i may just put it up if any one's interested.
MCPHEE HAS MANY ALBUMS OUT ON ATAVISTIC, CLEANFEED, AND OKKA DISC AS WELL AS HAT OLOGY,AMON OTHERS
AND BROTZ HAS SQUILLIONS OUT ON F.M.P,OKKA, ATAVISTIC ,......ETCETERA

william parker 'testimony' 1995 (solo bass)

hi all heres, william parkers now long gone 'testimony'

a solo double bass record to rival peter kowald, and barre phillips magnificent efforts.

heres a bagatellen review.

Pressed on the tiny and now extinct Zero In imprint out of Austin, TX (an apartment address on the tray card is always a telltale sign of shoe-string finances), Parker’s second solo recording represents the good, the bad and the ugly of his monologue style on bull fiddle. I first caught him in person in just such a setting, summer of 97’ while doing an internship at Smithsonian/Folkways. His was the second concert presented by the then fledgling Transparent Productions -- a cadre of volunteer "promoters" who would go on to curate over a hundred performances under the aegis of awarding players one hundred percent of each event’s proceeds. Against the odds, they’re still going strong. The recital took place at Kaffa House, a tiny corner pub (much like the Knit where Testimony was taped) and WP pulled out all the stops, at one point cantilevering a separate bow against each of his four strings to create a floating grid of tentacled harmonics. Similar tactics deploy on disc. The five tracks represent full two sets, tugging at the maximum capacity of the medium. Parker punishes and massages his bass in equal measure, falling prey to his tendency to cleave and burrow away mercilessly at his strings to the point of near tedium. The fidelity, rendered by a single stage side engineer, is coarse-grained and muddy. These are the major minuses, but the music still ends up transcending them. Parker’s massive technique, his canny ability to coax, in his own parlance, tonal rainbows is frequently in full, sweeping effect. Streaks and splatters lift from his fingerboard like arcs of paint flung from an action painter’s brush. There’s so much incandescent and percussive bowing, that a place of prominence for his mighty pizzicato capabilities is hardly missed. Parker has recorded at least one more solo album since this one, ‘97’s Lifting the Sanctions, but my preference goes to its predecessor as the more engrossing and electrifying excursion. Today marks his fifty-third birthday; hopefully his celebrated fecundity will continue for many years to come.
~ Derek Taylor

unfortunately william parkers website seems to be either experiencing major difficulties or be defunct all together a pity as it contains his massive discog.

parker is by now one of the most influential, free jazz musicians in as braxton might say this present time continuum.

hes played with many people including to my knowledge- cecil taylor, roscoe mitchell, joe morris

butch morris, roy campbell, charles gayle, ivo perelman -the list goes on and on

this is quite a tough listen ,lots of wild arco, comparable perhaps in its gritty abstraction with his duet with joe morris on the no more records lable.

im planning more uploads of zero in albums since unfortunately they no longer exist,

this is truly greatand intense improv at its best. do yourself a favour and grab it.

PLEASE BUY LOTS OF WILLIAM PARKERS MUSIC(THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT AFFLUENT,THEY ARE BARELY SCRAPING BY!!)

i will post a link to wp's website when its back on track.

heres a link to AUM ,a great freejazz lable where you can buy lots of w.parkers discs

William Hooker-is eternal life 1977 (Incomplete)

This New York-based drummer has played a large part in forging a bond between the city's free-jazz and downtown rock scenes while — and this is the tricky part — refusing to compromise the purity of essence that's pervaded his music for nearly two decades. Hooker plays with enough power to steer combos suffused with post-punk guitar scree, while maintaining a terpsichorean grace (reminiscent of Rashied Ali, a John Coltrane sideman who has had ephemeral involvement with the avant-rock scene as well) that effortlessly demonstrates the limits of most "rock" percussion.Hooker's work is steeped in new age philosophy —
...Is Eternal Life resounds with intricate patterns that bring to mind aural recreations of Druid stone circles — but the burning intensity of something like the side-long duet with reedman David Murray would no doubt provoke convulsions among Windham Hill devotees who claimed the term as accepted nomenclature for their brand of holiday inn jazz.
the above is a trouser press review-by david sprague.

this album was first issued by reality unit concepts in 1977 ,though the material was recorded
in 1974-6 as far as i know(i may be wrong, does anyone know?) this is a very fine album,a must for hooker fans especially those whoprefer hooker in a setting approximating a classic free jazz situation.
whatever the context hooker's pulsating percussive waves seem irrevocably timeless ,another great drummerwho seems to me to have been influenced by Cecil Taylors pulsating , incandescent
rythymns.

this album features david murray, david s ware, mark miller(borbetomagus?),and two players i dont readily recognise les goodson, and hassan dawkins.
artwork and tracklist included.

PLEASE BUY WILLIAM HOOKER'S CD'S, MANY ARE AVAILABLE ON KNITTING FACTORY, ATAVISTIC AND OTHER LABLES.

the great marion brown has always been one of my very favourite jazz musicians.

a true original with a unique tone, please BUY AS MANY MARION BROWN CDS AS YOU CAN FIND!!! jubalee is one of my personal favourites it follows on from his first esp session which is also very highly recommended, and shares with that release a lot of the personnel and many structural affinities.one thing that distinguishes brown from the run of the mill esp crowd, for me is the notable structural integrity of his compositions ,

they are always interesting and run a huge gamut from modal and completely free , as well as complex highly chromatic bebop /hardbop extensions. JUBALEE' has been criminally unavailable for many many years.i could not even find a decent review.
