WILLEM BREUKER ORCHESTRA/QUINTET "CONTEMPORARY JAZZ FROM HOLLAND - LITANY FOR THE 14TH OF JUNE, 1966" (RELAX)
This is Willem Breuker's first LP under his own name and also one of the earliest recordings of European Free Jazz. Already in this early stage of the socalled "European emancipation" we have not only a small combo but already compositions for a large ensemble. The achievement is quite differrent to Alex von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity (here and here) from the same year.
My thanks goes again to N for his ongoing generosity.

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH "GLOBE UNITY" (SABA, 1966)
"The cosmic eye at the central point and on the periphery of the sphere can see all the structures from every angle at the same time. From the divine indifference of the sphere emerge the solos with all the impulse of revolt. The lines they trace are the images of life."— Alexander von Schlippenbach, from the liner notes to Globe Unity (Saba, 1966).
As told to John Corbett by Peter Brötzmann: 'Out of the first trio (with Kowald and Sven-Åke Johnasson) and the Schoof/Schlippenbach Qunitet - Gerd Dudek was in it, Buschi, Jaki Liebezeit was the drummer - out of that combination was formed the first Globe Unity'. Not contradicting this, Jeske (1980), reported that Globe Unity was formed in autumn 1966 with a commission received by Alex von Schlippenbach from the Berlin Jazz Festival. 'We did three days of rehearsal in Koln and performed my composition entitled Globe Unity at the Philharmonie in Berlin on 3rd November. The piece was released on Saba the same year.' In the early days, the musical influences were various and the contributions and organization to some extent egalitarian, with Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald being particularly important. However, as the different 'periods' (Schlippenbach, 1993) were worked through Schlippenbach became the cornerstone and the provider of musical starting points for the group.........and in September 2012 Globe Uunity will be on the road again.
This was the birth of this unique orchestra which received great critics but the concert also has been titled “a men´s joke featuring the devil”

Breuker switched instruments between each piece. Two sets in all, just a little over 80 minutes. Hard to say what I prefer, but I've always enjoyed Breuker on the bass clarinet and some may recall the duet with John Surman on the "Gittin' to know y'all" album from the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meeting in 1969.
Here's a little description of the setting:
This is an audience recording I've done together with a friend of mine at a small jazz club called "Podium" in Essen (Germany). I've lost the notice with the exact date, but I'm remembering, that the concert took place on the first or second weekend in June 1968. It was a short time after the first LP of this "NEW ACOUSTIC SWING DUO", the first one of the new ICP Label, was issued.
We asked the two young musicians from Amsterdam and were allowed to record the concert. We did it in stereo, with two stage micros and a Revox tape recorder. Just after this concert I did a mono-copy on my own Grundig tape recorder. The flacs are directly from this reel tape.
I lost my friend from view in 1969 and still I was not able to rediscover him to ask for the master tapes. So at the moment it seems, that my copy is the only known master tape of this fantastic concert.
The model for this new group format of a reeds & drums duo probably were the John Coltrane / Rashied Ali Duos recorded in 1967. But the music of the Breuker/Bennink Duo was quiet different and unique.
ENJOY!
This was uploaded to the Dime site about three years ago by "sammler kk" who supplied more goodies from the late 60s from Dutch and German sources. We may get to them later on. So settle into the cozy chair, put up your feet, pour yourself a Scotch (or other drink of your choice) and get prepared for a little swing time. Yes sirree!
