Roswell Rudd ~ John Tchicai ~ Steve Lacy ~ Kent Carter ~ Steve McCall ~ RAI Big Band; Teatro dell’Opera, Rome; 24th March 1980

In 1980, the Italian radio programme Un Certo Discorso organised and broadcast eleven concerts with several of the leading jazz musicians at that time, together with the RAI big band. Several of the broadcasts of these concerts have already been shared on this blog. The RAI3 programme Battiti has been revisiting several of these performances recently, including one that has not appeared either here or on Dime. So here it is - it's just great to hear Steve Lacy on such ecstatic form, together with John Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter and Steve McCall, and of course, the RAI big band. As little editing as possible has been done, to give continuity to the actual concert; any corrections to the setlist or other details are welcome.

Roswell Rudd-Inside Job 1976

As promised here's Roswell Rudd's Inside job, overall I think a pretty fine , and Somewhat undervalued record ..which has to my knowledge never seen a cd reissue!

A nice live set recorded at Studio Rivbea, on the 21st of May 1976... Rudd and Rava always sounded great together
And BTW/for newbies who may not have heard it  the masterly eponymously titled" Enrico Rava Quartet"
on ECM is very special and highly recommended!

Roswell Rudd Quintet, featuring Sheila Jordan- Live in Laren 1975, FM

Here's Another fine show, by Roswell Rudd , with the wonderful Sheila Jordan on vocals..
A couple of tracks, from the "Flexible Flyer' album, and a great version of the classic" Rosmosis"

Rudds distinctive voice was one of the things that turned me on to this area of the music back in the 80's , when walking past a second hand record shop i heard Shepp's "3 for a quarter one for a dime"
a transformative experience ,which is vivid and nourishing to this day.

Rudds oeuvre is diverse and wonderful , many recent projects  having a pan ethno world fusion flavor  that convinces unlike many such projects (not surprising given his background as an ethno musicologist.)..they are well worth checking out especially the glorious 'Mali cool".
That said i'd like to recommend Blown Bone, originally released in Japan only and very tough to find until  its reissue on Emanem 10 years ago..a real marvel of  stylistic diversity and forerunner of the aforementioned recent work.

I recieved this in a trade some years ago ,
here are the original dime seeders notes

Roswell Rudd - Maine

Roswell Rudd, Hans Dulfer, Arjen Gorter, Martin Van DuynHoven - Maine
BVHAAST 011

Here's a lively date from late 1976 at "de Krog" in Amsterdam featuring American trombonist Roswell Rudd with three Dutch players, Hans Dulfer on tenor sax, Arjen Gorter on double bass and Martin Van DuynHoven on drums. We have posted the three Dutch gentlemen before with Theo Loevendie, also in a quartet setting, most of it from about the same period as this date, mid- to late 70s.

Only three pieces on this lp, first the title track which starts out with a simple repetitive bass motif, a joint chorus from the two main players and successive solos from all four, finishing with a drum solo with the bass motif underneath and a restatement of the main chorus at the end. This is a killer funky groove with all players riding on the main pulse of the piece with cracking  rimshots from Van DoynHousen (and even a cowbell in there?). If jazz should invade the dance floor, this is a track to fire up the engine. The Rollins piece has Dulfer roaring away at full speed and Rudd taking it down in his solo in the second half of the piece (after turning the record, so to speak) and Van Duynhousen piledriving it again before the repetition of the chorus right at the end. The final Rudd is in a bluesy mode with Dulfer and Rudd again in the driver's seat, delivering some expert hard bop to round out the proceedings, Dulfer hotting it and Rudd cooling it.

This is a hyperkinetic date, top speed ahead from all four and to me, Dulfer is a revelation, even over-powering Rudd at times, particularly on the Rollins piece. Sometimes you need a bit of coolness to balance the hotness, and the soloists do compliment each other nicely.

Recommended, and to be played reasonably loud to appreciate the full dynamics of this wonderful date! And it's a topnotch recording to boot.

LABORATORIO DELLA QUERCIA (HORO, 1978)

This record is similar to the London Jazz Composers Orchestra [> upcoming] sessions, as it features a large group , with individual players stepping out for solos from time to time.

There was an announcement about a reissue of the Horo catalogue. But apart of a few CDs (Rivers,Shepp, Sun Ra and Konitz/Solal duo), which are now - again? - OOP , we have still to wait until it eventually will happen.

Wish I could have been there!

Archie Shepp-Life at the Donaueschingen music festival, 1967- Saba LP , SB 15 148 st

This is for tony , who privately requested a re-up of 'One for the Trane' posted by Boromir as MP3'S a back in 2008. this is the very same record , in its original form on Saba/MPS . a real Gem by one of Archie Shepps best bands of the day , which unaccountably has never been reissued on CD outside of Japan.
What a joy to hear R.Rudd and Grachan Moncur tailgating each other and Shepp... Apparently this particular year at Donnaueschingen , was germany's real intro to the second wave of American new thing, and many in the Audience were outraged.. if you listen closely at certain points ,you'll hear a low but steady barrage of booing and jeering ...

"all of a sudden it became obvious that the battle fronts had reversed themselves under the onslaught of Free Jazz : under the impact of this music even the most serial , aleatoric and Electronic works now belonged to the the small fixed world of the establishment"
"Prof Strobel, the distinguished head of the Donaueschingen program, had specifically called for a shocking program. Well, it turned out to be such a shocker that he him self was shocked. Archie Shepps wild atacca on the Spiessburgerlichkeit and self satisfaction of the white world, with all the snobbism that goes with it-the respectably "normal"Donaueschingen audience was left limp by this outburst at the end by a three hour concert"
Joachim E.Berendt (from the liner notes)

"At first blush, adding Roswell Rudd to a group of native West African
musicians might seem, well, stretched. Surprisingly, though, it proves
a remarkably impressive combination -- in large part due to the simple

quality of the band."

ENRICO RAVA- ROSWELL RUDD QUARTET LIVE IN BREMEN (feb 13 1978) ,lame vbr

here's a superb broadcast in good sound, of Enrico rava's great 1978 quartet.
the band that made one of the great albums in the ecm catalog (self titled 1978).
both Rava and Rudd in playfully good form, and with jf, jenny-Clark and Aldo Romano ,who provide a propulsive constantly shifting textural backdrop, things couldn't possibly be any better.
i don't have the flac's for this.
thanks to the original trader, taper , seeders
only one track is carried over from the ecm (studio album)'Lavori Gasalinghi '

New York Art Quartet - Mohawk (1965)

I think this may have been posted before on a blog, but not for some time, so I guess some people don't have it. It was a short-lived quartet, which produced only two recordings to my knowledge, of which this is the second. The quartet, led by alto saxophonist John Tchicai, have a very distinctive sound, never reproduced by any other ensemble. The uniqueness of the sound comes from the collective interpretations of the tunes, rather from any long solos.
It is also interesting to note that all four members of the quartet are still alive and peforming (to my knowledge).
Line-up:
John Tchicai: alto sax
Roswell Rudd: trombone
Reggie Workman: bass
Milford Graves: percussion
