HUGH HOPPER MONSTER BAND :: French Tour 1974



Shortlived Monster Band was probably first HH's attempt to work with two bass format, what he did most succesfully many years later with Hughscore. The band sounds strong on Paris recording and also on unknown piece from Bordeaux, pairing of Elton Dean and Lol Cohxill works very well. Rest of audience recording from Poitiers I am sharing for posterity only (as it was seeded alltogether on Dime by our freind Propylaen in 2o12), because the amount of backround noise on these is really boring. First 4 recordings went through my mastering with much better result. Also included is single track of Paris FM recording from different source, which has some damage throughout, but is more complete and clean than Propylaen's version.

Kevin Ayers 1944 - 2013


Kevin Ayers has passed away at the age of 68 in the village of Montolieu in the Languedoc-Rossilon region, Southwest France. This village is these days known as a writers and artists' retreat and is one of the book towns of France. To judge from the picture below, it looks to be a excellent location for a quiet and pleasant life with lots of good food and good wine. Here he spent most of his time from the 90s onwards apart from occasional gigs and the recording and release of the "Unfairground" in 2007 with the help of many of the old alumni. The rock life and the muzic bizness never squared well with Kevin Years and nor did England as he preferred to spend his days in reasonable proximity to the Mediterranean.



 What sticks with me from the early days was that strange concoction known as the Whole World. They did not last for long and they did not leave many footprints. The only full album was "Shooting at the Moon" and some stayed on for "Whatevershebringswesing" which together with "Joy of a Toy" were the most proggish and the most unpreditable and slightly eccentric records he made. A BBC double cd came out with recordings for various radio programmes 1970-76, extending well beyond the Whole World period. The Whole World are rambunctious in a luvverly way as couod be expected. A gig in the Netherlands with a guest appearance by Bridget StJohn has been posted here The band mixed songs with extended musical freak outs which did not go well with all fans, but it's all truly great.

 However, some videos have cropped up, adding to the documentation we have of that period. The two first ones were made for French TV during a tour in 1970 and the final one is slightly later, made for the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972, though, as Kevin Ayers admits,  doing it in a studio with no live audience leaves out the ambiance a live gig with proper audience rapport thrives on.

First, some improvisations, a brief rendition of "Clarence in Wonderland", then into "Why are We Sleeping", reciting the lyrics in French, and finally, "May I" with a fine solo from Lol.

Do try to seek out those videos on Youtube where he recollects his childhood in Malaysia and says he has no intention of returning as it's not possible to retrieve the past. What once was cannot be recreated except within the imagination which is the domain of the artist.

Malaysia of today is a far cry from the Malaysia of the 50s in its pre-independent guise of British Malaya, I would think. Malaysia of today has a unreflective fascination for modernity in all its manifestations (Cyberjaya, anyone?), except for the values that came with it.

Oh, and my moniker kinabalu is a town and a mountain in Sabah province on the island of Borneo (though Penang remains my fave spot in the peninsular part of the country).

He died in his sleep.

Welfare State/Lol Coxhill




This is something of an oddity in the Lol Coxhill discography, but a delightful record all the same. Coxhill was the musical director for this travelling troupe from 1973 to 1975. This is functional music, adapted to the multi-dimensional performances of Welfare State, Welfare State was a nomadic consortium of artists, makers, musicians and performers. As said by John Fox in the liner notes, the WS envisaged themselves as Civic Magicians and Engineers of the Imagination, devising rituals and constructing images for particular times, places and seasons. They travelled throughout Europe with a mobile village of lorries and caravans, creating and animating outdoor events with sculptures, theatre pieces, celebrations, dances and processions. Consisting of 16 adults and 7 children, WS would stop for shorter or longer residences, whenever the opportunity arose to "make poetry concrete".

The record captures the functionality and the ceremoniality of the music, though listening to it one inevitably misses the other sensory elements needed to make it a full spectacular experience, but one might conjure up suitable visual images from the sounds captured on this album, not the.least the front cover pic which reminds me of the cult film "The Wicker Man".  Obvious referneces here to medieval ceremonies and rituals and old-age mythology. It might bear some resemblances to what in the UK has become known as the Travellers movement, dating back to the festivals of the 70s and ideas of alternative life styles, ironically at a certain distance from the welfare state, one might think.

As said above, this is altogether lovely. Lots of tracks here which made track-splitting into an ordeal, but perseverance shall be rewarded, they say. Among the troupe, there is a certain vocalist extraordinaire by the name of Phil Minton. Hard to pick out favourites here, but there is a duet of blackbird (?) and soprano saxophone, a splendid piece of pastoral idyll.

The info is a mite too extensive to put here, but there is an info file attached and scans of the back cover for those who want to engage in details. I keep thinking this is a very British record (more so as the liner notes even go to the point of emphasizing that the Ayler tune "Ghosts" has a BRITISH arrangement). So after this one, there will be a very Norwegian record, also rooted in folk music traditions. We'll get to that in a little while.

LOL COXHILL + PAT THOMAS "ONE NIGHT IN GLASGOW" (SCATTER, 1994)






A consummate musician with no stylistic boundaries. I've discovered him on the "Dunois Solos" which was also my first exposure to improvised solo musics.
He is in a line along soprano saxophone players as Sidney Bechet, Steve Lacy or Evan Parker.
Thank you Mr. Coxhill for your music and your impish humour.

An anecdote: "...used record dealer here told...that he met Lol on the
street one day when he was in the city for a jazz festival. Said hi and
invited him for a drink in a nearby cafe. Lol was happy to oblige and
sat for a chat. After a while, he took out his sax and a piece of paper.
He folded the paper in half, printed Lol Coxhill on it, put it on the
table in front of him. Then he played a tune. On finishing, he put his
sax and the piece of paper back in his case".

I'm sure that followers of this blog cannot have failed to register the passing away of Lol Coxhill last week. Regular followers would also know that we have posted Coxhill many times in the past. So, to commemorate his passing, here is a live set from 1985 with the Steve Miller Trio. Miller and Coxhill have collaborated in the past, most notably on two lps out on the Virgin subsidiary Caroline from 1973 and 1974, respectively. These have been compiled on a double cd on the Cuneiform label, with lots of extra material from what I read. Might be well worth picking up for those who did not get the original albums. Miller and Coxhill were part of the whole Canterbury prog jazz rock scene which spawned a bunch of outfits, among others Delivery, with which both were associated, and Kevin Ayers and the Whole World which made a memorable album called "Shooting at the Moon", featuring Coxhill. Happily, some BBC sessions have recently trickled out on cd and those with long memories may recall we posted a set from Holland a while back.

While the earlier collaborations were fragmented and ad-hoc-ish, this set here is one contiguous performance spread over four sides where Miller and Coxhill are joined by Tony Moore on bass and Eddie Prevost, of AMM provenance, on drums. The Matchless label is very much alive as an outlet for AMM projects and other specimens of British improv. 

An intensely concentrated set, this one, freely improvised, no steady rhythmic backbone to discern here, Coxhill floating and gliding over the piano-led trio. Not as obviously whimsical as other Coxhill projects, but somewhat chamber-like with the type of close listening among the players one associates with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and similar British improv combos. Not the stuff to grab you by the throat, but to gradually insinuate itself with you. A pleasant listening experience, whose rewards are acquired cumulatively. On top of it all, Coxhill's slippery soprano.

A slight change of pace .... (4..Andy and lucky)
here is an ecclectic typically canterbury style ,at times bucolic romp through the sublime and the ridiculous..
in the Form of the one and only performance ever by Mad axe, a band convened by the Late Hugh hopper ..

This sits stylistically somewhere between the frolicsome free floating RnB of Delivery , and the more complex less whimsical more intensely organic 'free' fusion of soft heap (another Hopper band, which Hewins was also in for a time...)

As great as the band is , the real interest for me is of course Lol Coxhills playing ,His distinctive trade mark slippery soprano, joyously romping and weaving insousciantly through every stylistic variation!..there are few things in this world more fulfilling and Beautiful!

from a purely technical standpoint Coxhill also registers,better than the others on these averagely, recorded but very listenable , highly entertaining 2 sets

recording is slightly reverberant and bright , but a whole lot better sounding than the later gen version thats been floating around on dime and elsewhere(as mp3's)

there are times when Hewins guitar tone sounds so much like an electric piano ,its uncanny .. that's mostly down to the sound quality of the acoustics of the room.

this must have been a Fun gig

Kevin Ayers and the Whole World live in Driebergen Holland 1970


Here's one that has been doing the rounds for a while. Known as "Colours of the Day", it features a live concert at Driebergen, Holland, broadcast by VPRO on 30 July 1970. This ROIO also comes with extra tracks recorded elsewhere, but what's on offer here is the Driebergen concert and nothing but.
This band was a strange creature and perhaps too strange to last for very long. It mixes Kevin Yyers' very English pop songs with an instrumental crew better known for long improvisational workouts. Lol Coxhill was to continue as a jazz improviser, Mike Oldfield to strike gold against all odds with "Tubular Bells", David Bedford to become a contemporary music composer and Robert Wyatt to continue drumming with Soft Machine and Matching Mole until an accident left him unable to go on drumming, launching a new career as a singer, composer and player up to the present day. And Kevin Ayers made a bundle of albums until his semi-permanent retreat in Ibiza, but has resurfaced recently with a new solo album.
The tunes are mostly from the first two Kevin Ayers solo albums with a couple of Soft Machine standards thrown in for good measure, as a launching pad for extended improvisation. A motley bunch of characters, to say the least. And Lol gets to do a little bit of crooning towards the end, said tune resurfacing on his first solo album (which we perhaps ought to post here).

Lol Coxhill-soprano saxophone improvisations(coxhill-shock lp 33)1990



Here's the first of a series of posts ripped from the collection of my old friend Iain,someone with whom Ive shared many journeys of musical discovery over the years..who also happens to be a self confessed lurker, he states that after having downloaded so many rarities over the past year ..he'd like to give a little back and share some of his own.
English improvising saxophonist Lol Coxhill is a much loved favourite..

Lol coxhill , one of Europe's greatest jazz men/free improvisers is probably unjustly remembered more by progressive rock fans ,for his association with the so called canterbury scene,and the likes of Kevin Ayres, delivery and the Damned ,and for his bit part in Derek Jarman's film Caravaggio, than for being one of the greatest free improvisers alive.
Coxhill started out in the late forties playing bebop and Afro Cuban jazz, he was a contemporary of and frequent guest with the likes of Tubby Hayes and Joe Harriott.
He was also around in the mid 60's when the first signs of a completely free music scene first emerged in Britain..and he has performed and recorded with most of those pioneers ...SME, The Brotherhood of Breath,Company, Evan Parker,Paul Rutherford , Eddie Prevost and so on ..in seemingly endless permutations.
He has also recorded dozens of solo soprano saxophone sessions..and they are among the wonders of 20th century music.
Abstract expressionist painter william Dekooning's description of himself as a 'slipping glimpser'is what most immediately comes to my mind in describing Coxhill's solo improvisations...slippery they are often oddly loping in much the same way as say one of the more wayward improvisations of a Lee Konitz, or a Sonny Rollins.
theres a great deal of Sly humour present and Coxhill rarely resorts to histrionic cliches, his improvisations are quite kaleidoscopic in breadth, as a melodic improvisor he's simply peerless.. melodies spiraling out and unfurling seemingly effortlessly until its almost hallucinatory in intensity! not to mention the 'pastelate intervals'

No idea about the provenance of this record..it has all the hall marks of being a bootleg, but could just as easily have been released by Coxhill himself.
no track titles, no clearly labeled a or b sides..this isn't even mentioned in the discography under Coxhill's name on the European improvised music site.

company- fictions 1977 incus.. flac and lame


An early improv purchase , thats long out of print and hasn’t seen cd reissue.
This is an often misunderstood album.. almost universally panned by critics who tend to miss the pervasive whimsy and obvious self parody.
In part it stems from the fact that each of the group read from Derek baileys book ‘improvisation its nature and practice in music’ as the music unfolds.
Nothing portentious or even remotely self important here though at times they appear to be hamming serious pretense..

Mengelbergs solo and interaction with coxhill( in particular) on side 2 where he builds an incredible solo which incorporates quotes and dissections of several Beethoven sontas,(including the’ hammerklavier’) seemingly tossing them all in a rhythmic blender.

Beautiful stuff.



Great to hear bailey, mengleberg,and coxhill together, I hadn’t listened to this in years .. what a joy !!!

LOL COXHILL - TOVERBAL SWEET (MUSHROOM, 1972)

toverbal sweet, by living legend and , a man who should be one of britains national treasures, as great a saxophonist as ever was,yep in my view that is, the equal of coltrane, parker, lester young,ayler, marion brown ,lacy you name it.

if this sounds like offensive hype, i suggest checking out his extensive ouevre for yourselves(,not that ive heard everything he's ever done).
coxhill remains (despite greater exposure in more recent years)just a name to most jazz fans.


heres a bit of a bio from the euro free improv pages
organised club sessions comprising live contemporary jazz plus recordings of modern jazz musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Lennie Tristano, Miles Davis and Stan Kenton. From 1950 to 1951 he was 'temporarily inconvenienced by national service in the Royal Air Force' but for the rest of that decade he was a member of: Denzil Bailey's Afro-Cubists (Dizzy Gillespie, Machito compositions/ arrangements); the Graham Fleming Combo touring US air bases in England (Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker compositions); and Sonny G and the G Men (R&B, standards). He also guested with established British contemporary jazz players, including Joe Harriott, Tubby Hayes, Oxford University Jazz Band as well as playing solo jazz and improvisations on the saxophone. Much of the early to mid 1960s was taken up with touring and accompanying/supporting visiting US artists such as Rufus Thomas (with the television and video release of Walking the dog), Martha & the Vandellas, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Mose Allison, and to some extent this continued into the 70s with tours by Otis Spann, Champion Jack Dupree, Lowell Fulson and Alexis Korner. However, between 1968 and 1972 Coxhill formed 'Delivery' with Steve Miller, Jack Monck, Pip Pyle and Phil Miller, was a member of the 'Whole World' with Kevin Ayers, David Bedford, Mike Oldfield and numerous drummers, as well as performing in the Coxhill/Bedford duo and the Coxhill/Steve Miller duo. The twelve years from 1973 saw Lol Coxhill become more well known as an improvising musician and solo player, with appearances thoughout Great Britain, Europe, the US, Japan and Canada. At the same time he undertook numerous collaborations with improvisors (as a member of Company), jazz musicians (as a member of the Brotherhood of Breath), rock and blues musicians (The Damned), as well as appearing with experimental theatre groups such as Welfare State. Other collaborations included Trevor Watts 'Moire Music', The Spontaneous Music Ensemble, and AMM. The Recedents (with Roger Turner and Mike Cooper) was formed in this period to perform electro-acoustic improvisations and has been a long-standing interest along with the Melody Four (with Steve Beresford and Tony Coe) - performing original and standard songs, film music, theatre music, jazz and improvisations - a duo with Pat Thomas, a duo with Adam Bohman (both electo-acoustic improvisations though of a rather different hue) and membership of the Dedication Orchestra. Lol Coxhill has also worked occasionally in television and films with a part in Sally Potter's London story, Ken Campbell and Nigel Evans' The madness museum and Derek Jarman's Caravaggio.
national steel guitarist mike cooper, once told me he thought lol's relative obscurity was a consequence of his lack of, self salesmanship combined with the fact that he was always too busy just living and breathing music, and raising his children as a single father. if talent and boundless imagination determined a musicians financial status ,lol coxhill would be a multi millionaire celebrated throughout the world as one of the most singular jazz giants of the last 50 years. i say jazz ,because no matter what the setting,wether with free improvisers a rock band, or playing hawaian music,coxhill always sounds jazzy and joyously so this album may not be his best and it was pretty poorly recorded ,no doubt on a shoe string budget, but coxhill is riveting from first to last. at times his accompanists seem to provide a 3rd rate canterbury style fusion, most of the nuance in the drumming and the electric piano parts are blotted out my the one dimensional sound . this is a rip by boromir from his old mushroom, vinyl. this album was briefly it seems reissued with extra material in 1997, but is not listed on their websites catalog, and references to it are pretty few and far between. we are assuming therefore with a high level of certainty that its OOP. if the cd ever comes back in print snap it up,the sound quality's sure to be better than this.
