CECIL TAYLOR - BLUE NOTES - MANFRED SCHOOF - MISHA MENGELBERG - THEO LOEVENDIE "FRANCE - ANTIBES+" (1964-69)

This is not music or more exactly it is music but with footage from the respective concerts.
Culled from the French TV.

Among others we have the first concert of the Blue Notes in Europe, just arriving from South-Africa. After the concert and some weeks playing in Antibes at the beach (and elsewhere) they embarked to Zürich were they got offered Dollar Brand's place at the Cafe Africana.

The movie (~ 1:40) is not in high definition but the quality is easily good enough to enjoy these concerts and in case of Taylor's Unit something rather special.

CECIL TAYLOR JAZZ UNIT "THE EARLY UNIT 1962" (INGO , 1962)

A recording from a seminal phase in Cecil Taylor's career.
The sound is really not the best - it's a bootleg!
But who I am to complain - in fact it is one of three known recordings from this excellent group - here in a rare early setting with a bassist.

Jimmy Lyons - Other Afternoons

I've noticed that blogger chums Serviceton and Sotise have started resurrecting old BYG Actuel records, so I thought I might as well get in on the game myself. This was posted on the Church#9 blog a couple of years ago, then in the mp3 format, so as to justify resposting it, I've upgraded it to the lossless flac format.

This was Jimmy Lyons' first record as a leader and with him were two other members of the Cecil Taylor group, Alan Silva on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums. In for Cecil on this date is trumpeter extraordinaire Lester Bowie, a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and a Paris resident at the time.

Stylistically this is lodged somewhere between bop mode and excursions into freer areas. Only two tracks per side, the second low-key, low-tempo chill outs after the more upbeat first tracks on each side. "However" stays basically in a bop mode and both "Premonitions" and "My You" are as indicated are somber pieces coming off the peaked performances starting each side. However, it's the title track which is the real clincher here with Jimmy Lyons delivering one of those solos which have to go down in history as something else. Starting off modulating the prhrases, he builds up into a frenzy of shrieks, but stays in control all the while. Lester Young has to jump in at the top and keep riding the wave until it subsides in a Cyrille drum solo and things are gliding into the quieter territory of "Premonitions". Truly astounding!

1. Other Afternoons
2. Premonitions
3. However
4. My You

Jimmy Lyons - alto sax
Lester Bowie - trumpet
Alan Silva - bass
Andrew Cyrille - drums

Recorded 15 August 1969 in Paris.

As the pieces more or less run together, I've ripped the A and B sides as two contiguous tracks. Scans are included in the attached files.

Enjoy! One of the seminal BYG albums!

David Murray Octet (with Jimmy Lyons) - Live NYC 1984

Prolific artist David Murray has frequently led octets consisting of many distinguished musicians.
This one intrigued me particularly because of the inclusion of Jimmy Lyons. I wasn't aware that he'd ever played with Murray, and found it interesting to hear Lyons in company with different musicians than those on his more well-known recordings.
This is a very polished performance. You'd think the guys performed together permanently. It must be tribute to Murray to bring such a band together and function so well. There's a particularly fine version of Murray's classic "Last of the Hipmen".

Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Andrew Cyrille- live at berlin jazz days 6th nov 1975 , FLAC, and LAME (NEW LINKS)

This is a very special concert, the finest cecil taylor roio ive ever heard .

Its simply incredible both as a performance ,and in terms of the recording quality.

From the most under documented period in cecils career.

Even a cursory comparison with “akisakila”(the only official release by this magnificent edition of taylor's unit) will reveal I think that this is of equal ,if not superior sound quality!

many thanks to the original taper/archiver of this stunning set, and virtual sonic hugs to black forrest the dime seeder.

Exhilarating stuff.. I can’t recommend it stongly enough.

Thanks also to glmlr who passed it on to me some months ago, and has rightly insisted on it being shared here.

Jimmy Lyons, Oliver Lake, Henry Threadgill - Live Nickelsdorf 1980.

This is somewhat of a curiosity. The 3 great altoists improvising together, without rhythm section. I know nothing about this concert apart from basic details:-

1980-August-16
Nickelsdorf, Austria,
Konfrontationen 1980

Oliver Lake,as
Jimmy Lyons,as
Henry Threadgill,as

It is just a single piece of about 30 minutes. Thanks go to jazzrita for seeding. I'm not sure whether it is an FM broadcast or an audience boot, but the sound quality is very good. If anyone knows anything at all about this trio (was it a one-off gig ?) then I'd be pleased to hear from them. See if you can distinguish which player is which. I can make out Lyons's distinctive style, but can't tell between the other two.

I've put up an mp3 link. I have it in flac, which I'll upload if there is enough interest.

JIMMY LYONS-featuring KAREN BORCA- RIFFS RECORDED IN 1980 AT DREHER PARIS, FLAC AND LAME

heres an album i like by a quartet which was an active working unit for some years.
jimmy lyons of course was a mainstay of cecil taylor's units for 25 or so years.
and im sure that fans who have the ayler box ,are already familiar with the high level of creative empathy produced by this group.

heres a short ,almost curt review from amg
by Scott Yanow
For one of his very infrequent recordings outside of the realm of Cecil Taylor, altoist Jimmy Lyons teams up with the talented jazz bassoonist Karen Borca, bassist Jay Oliver and drummer Paul Murphy for lengthy and rather adventurous versions of "Theme" and "Riffs #1/II" plus the brief "Riffs #1/I" which serves as a prelude to the longer "Riffs." It is always intriguing to hear Lyons stretching out without a piano and this set helped make listeners aware of Borca's brilliant playing on the rarely utilized bassoon.

its hard to go wrong with jimmy lyons, unfortunately on this the recording balance is far from perfect, the sound quality is at times muddy , though its certainly better than that achieved on the mamoth 3 lp set push- pull which i regret having sold because of the poor sound quality.
if anyone has that please post it either here or elsewhere.

this wont dissapoint any lyons fans, despite its technical shortcomings.
buy jimmy lyons and karen borca discs
its an easily aquired taste thats well worth cultivating!
