Richard Davis trio-Feat Joe Beck& Jack Dejohnette- Song for wounded Knee 1973
Richard Davis what can one say!.. his records under his own name are so undervalued.. most of them are out of print...
This is a passionate testament to the trio's heartfelt political activism, something considered corny and passé in todays largely arid musical landscape... evermore relevant though in a world that is arguably geopolitically worse off than it was in 73.
Its a world where bread and circuses take on a whole other dimension, the illusion of personal freedom indistinguishable from and so frequently confused with the sphere of personal consumption.
I've always loved the more abstract side of Davis's musical sensibility amply displayed here in a set
of glowing largely improvised pieces..on the opening Blues" Song for Wounded knee" , Davis uses the melody to blue Monk.. but the rest is pretty free.. Davis's arco is evident throughout.. some passages on 'America the beautiful "or "Agnewstic"wouldn't be out of place in a chamber piece by Helmut Lachenmann...
staggering.. gorgeous!
enjoy!
ps.. this may have been partially inspired by the great book "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee"which came out around that time

80/81 - Live in Rome '81
80/81 a short lived super-group born within the German
label ECM, for which recorded the homonymous (and fine)
double LP in May 1980.
This Roman concert (taped by "Ilario") was part of the '81
European tour (the day before they played at the Willisau
Festival) and i think, it could be an interesting integration
at the poor official discography.

Special Edition has been one of JDJ's projects that started out I think with an LP on the ECM label in 1979 entitled, not very originally, Special Edition. That album features David Murray on tenor/bass clarinet. This role seems to have rotated between him and Chico Freeman, who can be found on this recording, alongside the excellent Arthur Blythe who seems to have been a mainstay of the band. I don't know when their most recent gig took place.
This set features extended versions of JDJ's compositions that appeared on that first album, and very good they are too.
Sound quality is excellent. Thanks to taper and seeder.

Bill Laswell, Derek Bailey, Jack DeJohnette, DJ Disk - Live Frankfurt 1998
I'm one of the few around here who does not appreciate Derek Bailey's fine qualities, so I'm not the ideal person to present this. Perhaps some afficionado can add some more qualified opinion after listening. I was intrigued by his cohorts on this recording when I came across it. Jack DeJohnette is one of my all-time favourite drummers, but I've never heard him playing the sort of music you'd normally expect Bailey to play. Bill Laswell I only know from his projects with John Zorn, but if you look at his career, he's played in countless rock and fusion bands. I won't comment on Mr Disk !
I must admit I haven't heard this in it's entireity, but from bits that I've listened to, Bailey almosts seems to play in time with the rhythm section a la John McLaughlin, but then there are other parts where he seems to ignore them.
I'm posting this in flac. Could somebody please do the honours and upload an mp3 version.
