Charles Mingus Sextet in Oslo 1964

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) is in the process of digitising its huge archive of programmes dating back several decades. Among the items to be uncovered is this gem which should be of huge interest to jazz enthusiasts.

It is the Charles Mingus Sextet recorded at the University hall at the University of Oslo on 12 April 1964. A very classic Mingus line-up on this date:

Charles MINGUS, bass,
Eric DOLPHY, alto sax,
Clifford JORDAN, tenor sax,
Johnny COLES, trumpet,
Jaki BYARD, piano
Dannie RICHMOND, drums

The tunes:

1. Goodbye, Eric Dolphy, hurry back
2. Orange was the Colour of her Dress, then Blue Silk
3. Ow/Parkeriana
4. Take the A train

Altogether close to one hour of music and it is a particular delight to see Eric Dolphy in action!

More items to come from this archive as I find them!

A Call to all Charles Mingus Fans ( a propos the Documentary in the making- C.Mingus ,a True Jazz Legend by his Grandson Kevin Ellington Mingus)

Dear Friends , we the Administrators ,here at Inconstant Sol united in our admiration of and love for the music of Charles Mingus,a pivotal, indisputably central figure in the History of 20th Century music... have recently learned of a nascent Film project being put together at present by Kevin Ellington Mingus , the great man's grandson (Who incidently is an improvising bassist & composer in his own right) , and have agreed to support it in any way we can .
Kevin Mingus describes his main motivation for making this film as

"A grandson’s journey through the lore and legends of jazz history to find his grandfather, Charles Mingus."... read about it here on his website.

Through contact with his representatives, it has also come to our attention that those involved in this project are seeking unpublished concert footage and or any other possibly relevant archival materials .

We ask therefore ,that if you are in possession of anything that is unpublished and relevant you please consider making those archival materials available to the film makers.
You can contact the Project through Kevin Mingus's website , feel free also to contact us through the email address's in our blogger profiles so that we can pass on your details.

I cant stress enough that we believe this is an important project and urge all concerned parties ,to support it anyway they can .
I'd also like to declare that we will be promoting this project further upon completion and or release, and to add that we have absolutely no financial interest or stake of any kind in the project.

Thank you!
S

Hello,

We are very happy to announce that we launched our fund-raising
campaign today (Wednesday, 9 Nov. 2011) for the project "Mingus on
Mingus". We have a big challenge ahead of us and we would like to
count on help. A successful campaign means we can move forward
with the project and capture moments that we might otherwise loose.
The making of the documentary will be a long road but having the
resources to begin our journey is all we can hope for.
We know it will not be possible without your help and we are all
at your disposal for any questions or feedback you may have.

Our goal is to raise $45,000 in 40 days. With your post in your blog, you will help us to reach out the community. Thank you!

Best,
Valeria Rios

--- Update ---

We have a few days left.
We need the help of everyone.
Every single Dollar counts.
We post new pledges on the campaign.
We do not have any support of the Mingus Estate. This is a completely independent project.

We definitively need much more support, we have to push push and push.

There are many enthusiast fans and players that we have yet to reach. With your help we can connect them to the project and motivate the onlookers to support it.

--- Update ---

Hello,

I have received many inquiries concerning relationship between Mingus
on Mingus and Sue Mingus:
- Is Sue affiliated to the Mingus on Mingus project?
- Why is Sue not supporting the project?
- Why there is no information on the project on the Official Charles
Mingus Website and Facebook page?
- Why is Sue not listed as an interviewee?
To that end Kevin Ellington Mingus have written the following Open
Letter, here is the link http://orangethenblue.com/open-letter/

We have 10 days left and we've got some support from you, please, we
need to push harder and as you'll notice from the letter we are
working quite independently. Now more than ever we need to spread the
word to make this project real.

Thank you!!!
Valeria

-------------------------- --- Update ---!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello bloggers,
I know Kevin wrote you an email, but I want to do it myself too as I
am the one who has been in touch with you from the beginning.
As you well know we are super-grateful for all the support we are
receiving from you, we made it public again in our last update of the
campaign yesterday. As you can read in an earlier update we are having
some good news for distribution!! many festivals seem to be interested
in showing the doc when is finished.... but FIRST WE NEED TO FINISH
IT! and for that we need the funds of Kickstarter.
WE ARE VERY VERY CLOSE, we have raised more than $33,000 and we just
need a FINAL PUSH TO JUMP TO THE GOAL.
So please!!! make an update, a very short note, anything in your blog
that everyone who did not pledge decides to do it. We really really
really need this last help.

You can take from the website or from our Kickstarter page anything
you want for the post (from the updates as well)

www.orangethenblue.com
FYI: we have new pledges as some jazz clubs have donated some tickets
for their clubs and M.Weintrob has donate some of his photographs as
well to pledge.

Again thank you soooo much for your support, you are and will be
always present in this project!!!

A big hug,
Valeria

Last 24 hours!! "Mingus on Mingus" can be real because of you.
Thanks to all the support we are receiving. We still need to make the
last sprint.
Help us by pledging to the project and spreading the word to everyone
around you.
Let's get on the Big Screen!

Yusef Lateef with Mingus at Birdland 1961

Here's one for Doug Schulkind, chum, boundless music enthusiast, radio DJ, miner of the blogosphere with a weekly column on the WFMU blog and, as it happens, an unreserved Yusef Lateef admirer and aficionado. Regular listeners to his weekly radio show on Friday mornings will have noted that the entire three-hour October 9 broadcast was devoted to the music of Yusef Lateef. This show as well as all others are archived on the WFMU site for posterity, so can be listened to at any time from now to eternity (inshallah).

Even three hours can only be a selection, so here's a little something that has never been officially released. This is a part of the set of recordings known as the Birdland Broadcasts 1961-62, on WADO AM, most of them hosted by Symphony Sid, though not this one where the brief announcements are made by Pee Wee Marquette. The sessions were taped by Boris Rose, transferred to acetates and bootlegged on a variety of labels possibly run by Rose.

What's here is the first of seven sessions, comprising approx. three hours in all. This one runs for about 20 minutes and is the only to feature Yusef Lateef (and Roland Kirk!). Three pieces, the last one cut off in mid-flight.

Basic facts:

Charlie Mingus and his Jazz Workshop

Date: October 21, 1961 (live)

Location: Birdland, New York City

Charles Mingus (ldr),
Jimmy Knepper (tb),
Roland Kirk (ts, manzello, stritch),
Yusef Lateef (ts),
Charles Mingus (p),
Doug Watkins (b),
Dannie Richmond (d),
Pee Wee Marquette (mc)

a. [unknown title] 7:12
b. Ecclusiastics (Mingus) 9:15
c. Hog Callin' Blues (incomplete; fade-out) (Mingus) 3:08

The first piece is announced by Mingus as "Blue Cee", though some uncertainty exists whether that is indeed the tune and the final tune did not have a title at the time of the broadcast.

For details, here is a discographical essay:

http://mingus.onttonen.info/birdland.html.

If I'm not totally off the rails, Lateef is taking the third solo on the first two tunes and possibly the lead solo on the final, incomplete one. All classic stuff, needless to say.

Enjoy!

Charles Mingus Quintet live in Bremen 1975

I thought I'd follow up on the recent spate of Don Pullen (and George Adams) postings with this set from a live concert in 1975. Here we have Pullen and George Adams as part of the Mingus Quintet, obviously from a European tour, as there are other tapes in circulation from this year.

Close to two hours of goodness here. All classics and with ample space for the band members to stretch out. Listen in on the first track for some extended Pullen solo work, for example. Walrath is fairly new to me, so any added info is welcome.

Stefano Maltese - (1999) Open Letter To Mingus - MJCD 1122

Stefano Maltese

Biography by Francesco Martinelli

Since the '70s, Sicilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Maltese has worked in a variety of situations ranging from solo to large ensembles including strings and unusual instruments like harmonica and glockenspiel. He has actively explored the interaction between writing and improvising, and followed his own personal path inspired by music, literature, and other arts, independently arriving at results similar to those reached by musicians of other post-jazz environments, such as Chicago's AACM Amsterdam's ICP Orchestra. Similar to John Tchicai or Roscoe Mitchell, Maltese is very much his own man, and his aesthetics stem from jazz as much as from the rich artistic and philosophical heritage of his beloved Sicily

In 1987, Maltese set up the first orchestra that grouped avant-garde musicians from different areas of Italy, a forerunner to the Italian Instabile Orchestra. In 1990, he created the Open Sound Ensemble to which he invited musicians from different areas of the worl (Living Alive, Leo 2000), and in 1993, organized the As Sikilli Ensemble (the Sicilian in Arabic) to play his own articulated suites (Seven Tracks For Tomorrow, Dischi della Quercia 1997). His impressive CDs in duo with Marilyn Crispell on Black Saint (Red And Blue) focus on open improvisations, as does the ad hoc quartet with Evan parker, Keith Tippet adn Antonio Moncada (Double Mirrro, Splasc(h) 1996). He regularly collaborates with excellent vocalist Gioconda Cilion, a major song stylist and improviser (Sounds Of My Soul Dischi della Quercia 1995) and performs solo (Good Morning Midnight Splasc(h) 1998). In his town of Syracuse, he promotes the Labirinti Sonori Jazz Festival.

Astonishing italian new jazz "all star" ensemble assembled in 1999 to celebrate Charles Mingus' 20 years after his death. In this deep tribute the predominant feeling is respect and a great knowledge of Charles Mingus compositional and arranging skills. In this concert, later published as enclosed to the italian jazz magazin "Musica Jazz", we find a selection of 9 among the best italian musicians in a program of six Mingus compositions alternated with 6 original Maltese compositions inspired to those ones. Even if this is an important and very fine record, perhaps is not the most rapresentative of Stefano Maltese's originality; but it's an OOP and a very rare album to find even in Italy.
My aim here is mostly that of pointing to the attention of a highly qualified group a name perhaps not so largely known despite the amazingly beauty of his music.
