MAX ROACH "THE LOADSTAR" (HORO, 1977)

Resurrected post with a high defintion vinyl rip.
Here's the original write up:
Horo Number 3 from I Forgot Clifford. I had 5 Max Roach discs on Clifford, and 2 of them were in the top ten (this one and Confirmation). This may be a bit surprising since much of the blog had free jazz. Max transcended generations having bopped with Bird and later played with Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Shepp, hip hoppers, MBoom, etc. I have posted this one because it is very rare and contains a lot of music. As noted previously, Billy Harper is great on this disc. If you are new to Max's drums, listen to the dialogue he sets up between snare and bass drum. The last of this breed may be Roy Haynes.

Billy Harper, tenor saxophone
Cecil Bridgewater, trumpet

Reggie Workman-Summit Conference,2-8-1995, aud

Here's a  good Audience capture of the summit conference band , this was obviously recorded while they were touring the essential postcards Cd.
Nice long chewy set ... thanks to the original Taper/Seeders!

SEEDERS Notes
Reggie Workman's Summit Conference

August 2, 1995

Yoshi's, Oakland, CA
(first set only)

Reggie Workman  bass,
Andrew Hill  piano,
Sam Rivers  flute, soprano & tenor sax
Julian Priester  trombone
Pheeroan akLaff  drums

01 Conversation (Sonelius Smith)  25:31
02 Suite Tristan (Workman) 13:15
03 unidentified  8:39
04 Joanne (Hill) 13:29
05 Breath (Priester)  10:06
06 Midnight River Crossing (AkLaff)  5:49

TT 76:49

This quintet of giants came to be as a consequence of Ralph Simon’s offer to Reggie Workman to record a CD for his label Postcards in 1993. The result is the brilliant "Summit Conference" (Postcards  POST1003), highly recommended and still in press.
This show was recorded almost two years later at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. I can neither find it in a bot list search nor apparently in blogland, so I assume it is uncirculated on the web. This is a remarkably fine audience (or perhaps, on stage) recording with a intimate and very concentrated atmosphere and no distracting noise at all.
On the CDR I received there were very short silent parts near the start and end of tracks 2 and 3 which are probably due to a transfer from a CDR with SBEs.
I repaired this and retracked all tracks. Pitch is correct (I suppose this comes from a digital source).
As the levels initially are very low on the original recording, I raised them a little (more so in the very low passages and less so towards the end).
I also applied a tiny amount of compression to the really loud passages.
As always, I did all processing in 24bit.

The closing stage announcement identifies track 5 as "Midnight River Crossing" and track 6 as "Breath".
Both relevant discographers (Ronald Lyles in his Andrew Hill Discography and Rick Lopez in his Sam Rivers Sessionography) do so likewise (see below), but track 5 is clearly the same as Julian Priester's "Breath" on POST1003,
so I assume that track 6 is "Midnight River Crossing" by Pheeroan akLaff.

There might be a splice in track 1 at 3:32:485. I removed a click there.

All praise goes to the creators of the music, truly a summit conference, and thanks so much to the unknown taper!

Lineage:

Heiner Stadler-Brains on Fire, Vol 2(Labor lp 702)Rec 1971-3

For Agmosk and who ever else is interested, Here's Vol 2, of Heiner Stadler's Brains on Fire , i Won't Waffle on ..those interested can read my description of Vol 1....
there really is very little info online about these sessions .. so please if you know something ,fill in the  gaps.

As i stated in that post , Side one of this Lp, a Duet featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Masterly Reggie Workman is unfortunately damaged almost beyond repair .
This Therefore is just a straight rip, with only the volume raised.... no eq, de click or anything else...

I have a high tolerance for Vinyl noise , and just barely find it listenable .... i'll leave it for someone better than i to restore side one... feel free to attempt it and repost in comments.
The sound quality of these two sessions are very different, side a (the damaged side) being bright and reverberant while side two has more of a rough hewn , grainier , low budget sound.

Side A- (damaged)
1)Love in the Middle of the air
Reggie Workman -db
Dee Dee Bridgewater -Voice
Leonore Kandel- poem
rec, Generation Sound Studio- 3rd July 1973

Side B- (vg)

Heiner Stadler-Brains on fire ,Vol 1 ( Labor ,lp 701)rec 1966-71

Here's a great one , by Heiner Stadler a German composer , arranger and Pianist .. who moved to NYC in the Mid 60's.. most of his records have been self released ,as far as i can tell, apart from the Classic Tribute to Monk and Bird on tomato ,which other than this and vol2 is the only Other Stadler i own.

Although informed by the New thing currents of the day , to my ears this music is equally influenced by currents in European Classical music ,and in that sense these piece's are a late flowering of so called third stream , posited by Gunther Schuller and others a decade earlier , Another point of reference is George Russell particularly the contemporaneous music recorded while Russell was living in Scandinavia.

These sessions are comprised of 2 distinct groups featuring some of the Leading lights of the Jazz avant guard.. Jimmy Guiffre is also clearly another obvious point of reference, and in fact Joe Chambers, Barre Phillips and Don Friedman were Guiffre's, regular Rythm section at the time this was recorded.

a special note regarding the little known Tyrone Washington ,who is superb and plays up a veritable firestorm , on Heidi and all tones!

on a technical note I bought this in the Mid Eighties , (also have vol-2),the pressings have various, very audible Flaws , on top of being water damaged they look as though they have been used to cut lines of Amphetamine , as well as being eaten over.. i've cleaned them as best i can (Vol 2 is far worse) i have a vague recollection of seeing a cd release years ago of some of this Material perhaps even on the Tomato label , a single disc compilation of both volumes ... cant find any evidence that it is currently available in any form.... any info on that or other lesser known releases would be appreciated!

Jimmy Owens (tp) Garnett Brown (tb) Joe Farrell (ts) Don Friedman (p) Barre Phillips, Reggie Workman (b) Joe Chambers, Lennie White (d) Heiner Stadler (comp) New York, December 1966 and July /September-1971

Reggie Workman Quartet - Live Cambridge Ma 1986

Details:

Reggie Workman Quartet
Cambridge – Mass. (USA)
Charlie´s Tap
1986.04.18 – April 18, 1986

Reggie Workman b, leader
Joseph Jarman as
Marilyn Crispell p
Andrew Cyrille dr

1) 10:28 Conversation
2) 10:25 Synapsis II
3) 09:50 5432
4) 12:25 Oshoon´s Ardor
5) 06:51 Visitation
6) 08:53 One South
7) 25:27 Dear Lord/After the Rain/Wise One/ Coltrane Time
8) 03:48 Chant n.c.

This seemed a bit of a curiosity when I picked it up off dime some time ago. Workman, Crispell and Cyrille had played and recorded together on a number of previous occasions, but the quartet that Reggis led at the time comprised these three plus Oliver Lake. The inclusion of Joseph Jarman, to me anyway, seemed a little odd (though I believe he had made a recording with Crispell). Jarman's style of play, least what I've heard of him, seemed a little alien to this type of quartet. Maybe he was just standing in for Oliver Lake, I can only guess.

Much of this concert is Coltraneish. Track 6 sounds like a tune that either Eric Dolphy or Jackie Maclean recorded. I can't make my mind whether or not Jarman is entirely comfortable playing this sort of stuff. On track 4, the bells, whistles, gongs and flutes come out, which is more like the familiar AEC material on which he surpasses.

This is an audience recording. Listenable but not brilliant sound quality, with a bit of microphone rustle here and there. Also the excellent Ms Crispell soldiers on gamely with an out-of-tune piano, that bane of a pianist's life. All in all, the quality will not be enhanced by a flac version so I'll just post mp3.

reggie workman, andrew cyrille, Juhani Aaltonen ,live at St Peter's Church, New York, on 10th December 2006

hi,
another one from boromirs ,collection of recent broadcasts.
reggie workman and andrew cyrille are among the most important musicians to emerge in the 1960's
theyve both played with practicaly everyone of any note, in both mainstream jazz and improv contexts...
workman was for a time a member of john coltranes early sixties quartet, also from that period playing on very important albums by wayne shorter, lee morgan(search for a new land, one of morgans most exploratory records)joe henderson and so forth
in the early eighties workman seems to have done the opposite of what most players of his generation chose to do, in finding ever more challenging contexts , making an extraordinary run of albums under his own name for leo records and also the ny based postcards lable, culminating in one of the great free jazz albums of the late 20th century
summit meeting, with sam rivers, andrew hill, julian priester and pheeroan aklaff.
apart from those workman has on an off played with marilyn crispell, and contributed to a fine string of her records , on leo and music and arts...
master drummer andrew cyrille, started his recording career, with coleman hawkins ,and
walt dickerson, before playing on cecil taylors pioneering blue note lps, conquistador and unit structures and then going on to play and record with taylor for a further dozen years.
cyrille made 2 stunning albums on black saint with jimmy lyons in the late seventies as well as the essential album 'nuba'with both lyons and jeanne lee.
since then hes worked with david murray, oliver lake, irene schweitzer, peter brotzmann, anthony braxton and john tchicai among others.
dipmong....
juhani aaltonen i know very little about, exept that ive heard him on edward vesalas record's
so heres a little something from his website here
JUHANI AALTONEN, who started his musical career in the late 1950s, has been a big idol and role model for about every younger Finnish saxophone player. In the 1960s he played with the modernists of the time, ao. with Edward Vesala, Otto Donner, Heikki Sarmanto and Seppo "Baron" Paakkunainen. In 1968 he received the Georgie Award from The Finnish Jazz Federation.
In early 1970s Aaltonen joined Tasavallan Presidentti (The President of the Republic), a legendary (jazz)rock group led by the guitarist Jukka Tolonen. In 1974 he was one of the musicians founding UMO Jazz Orchestra. Internationally he played ao. with Graham Collier Big Band and, most noteworthy, with the Norwegian Arild Andersen Quartet which made two albums for ECM in the late 1970s.
Though Aaltonen appears on a great number of albums, the albums of his own have been rare, especially after Prana (w. Reggie Workman and Edward Vesala on Vesala’s Leo Records, 1981). The debut, Etiquette, came out in 1974. Strings, a collaboration with Otto Donner, was The Album of the Year 1976 chosen by the Finnish Broadcasting Company. A follower to that, Strings Revisited, was released in 2003 on TUM Records, the comparatively new leading Finnish jazz label. There’s also another TUM recording by him from year 2004, with Reggie..
