Indulgently Twisted Interview

"Indulgently Horrific had the chance to meet the next force in horror, the Soska Twins (a.k.a the Twisted Twins), at the 2012 San Diego Comic Con during the panel of the upcoming movie “American Mary”. Jen and Sylvia Soska wrote, produced and directed the film. American Mary is a Canadian horror film that tells the story of a medical student named Mary Mason, played by Katharine Isabelle, who descends into the madness of the underground surgery world.
“American Mary” will be previewed on August 27, 2012 at London’s FILM4 Fright Fest."

You can tell when someone has a passion for what they do - Rakkan of Indulgently Horrific is a professional of that ilk which made the interview with him very in depth, interesting, and an absolute pleasure for my twinnie and me.

Want to know what a typical day on set was like? Get two twin-first accounts on the Mary mayhem we were getting up to with our fantastic team. Best people in the industry, so if you're planning to film in Vancouver - these are the people that should be making up your team. Double mint sibling rivalry - does it exist and how do we keep from killing one another? Um, well... What kind of negative response do we get? Some of the words are censored, but I think you'll get a good idea and a laugh too.

You have received a lot of praise for your work, but nothing is immune to criticism. Could you share some of the harshest criticisms you have received throughout your career?
Sylvia: We get called stupid ugly talentless whores and variations thereof a fair bit. At first, it bothered me, more so because I didn’t want my family to see people talking about me like that. I’ve developed a thick skin and those comments don’t even register to me now. Sometimes when I’m feeling playful, I message them back and say that I hope that they like the next film better. What did offend me was a slew of a comments on what an unintelligent s*** I am followed by a statement that I ‘probably don’t even know who Dario Argento is’. That pissed me off. Dario Argento’s use of colour in his lighting for his films was a huge inspiration in AMERICAN MARY. I understand someone not liking a film, we’ve gotten people calling DEAD HOOKER a masterpiece and people saying that it is the worst film they have ever seen in their lives, but to suggest that I am not a horror fan offends me on a personal level. Whether I’m a terrible filmmaker is always going to be up for discussion as long as Jen and I are making films, but my being a horror fan should not.
Jen: I hate how it always comes down to our looks. More often than not we are called stupid s**** or c**** and get told the only reason we’re here is because men work with us because they fancy us. They don’t care about our work or what we’ve sacrificed to get to where we are. There are women out there who imply that we somehow have it easier because of the way we look. It’s shitty because we try to make good work for many reasons, one of them being that if good work comes from female artists it makes it easier for others to follow, but then you have women who just hate you for all your successes. The more success we see, the fewer supporters we have. They tell you real life isn’t like high-school, but it is. It really is. If a woman is strong and confident and stands her ground, she’s a b****. If a man does, he’s just being a man. Women seemed to be called b*****, s****, or c****. That’s the hat trick of female insults.
We have taken a lot of abuse for being women, presenting ourselves the way we do, and for our age. I’ve been told that I should dress more like Penny Marshall if I want people to respect me. That I should intentionally dress down, but I’ll never change the way I am and the way I look to gain the respect of sexist douchebags. It would be degrading to change who I am to fit into what other people want me to be. I dress and act the way I do anywhere and everywhere I go. I don’t dress up a certain way for set. I go like that to the corner store.

Read the whole fucking rad piece here. Thank you to Rakkan and Indulgently Horrific for taking the time to come to our panel at SDCC 2012 and chatting to us!

Thank you to you, lady or gentlemen, for checking out the article. AMERICAN MARY is a'coming - cannot wait to unleash her on you guys.

SDCC 2012: Meeting Larry Thomas

The 90s had a decade definitive show that was SEINFELD. Those catch phrases and crazy situations were hugely popular in many households, including my own. It was great to meet the Soup Nazi himself, the wonderful and kind Larry Thomas at Comic Con and nerd out about soaps.

SDCC 2012: Meeting Lloyd Kaufman

We got to meet the king of Troma, the sensational Lloyd Kaufman - the man behind THE TOXIC AVENGER and the indie filmmaker essential 'Make Your Own Damn Movie' Series. We got our book personalized and got to fangirl on Lloyd on his 38th Anniversary. It was all forms of rad.

SDCC 2012: Best Day Ever Recap

This video was taken at the end of Saturday after two interviews, two superhero smooches (for Jen), and a lot of nerding out.

SDCC 2012: Meeting Sean Astin

Total dorky fangirls here, but we were completely unprepared to turn a corner and see Samwise Gamgee, the completely awesome, Sean Astin, just chilling there.

It was a big win because there was no way in hell that I was getting into Hall H for THE HOBBIT panel and I didn't win the draw for the autograph signing. He was my favorite in the films which my dad is like the biggest fan of. Also, our dad is rad.

SDCC 2012: The Punisher Just Kissed Me

You can meet everyone at the con, so I sort of lost my fangirl mind when I ran into my favorite Punisher, Tom Jane, at his RAW Studios booth. Check out his Punisher fan vid - Dirty Laundry. Fucking brilliant.

SDCC 2012: Jen is a Lush

Post Deadpool game announcement drop. After a day of hunting Deadpools, we meet the real deal and react in full Canadian patriotism.

Twisted Twins are Total Comic Nerds & Proud

"Forget the “Twisted” part when describing Jen and Sylvia Soska, you can now add sexy geeks as well when describing these two awesome women. Fresh after their first appearance at the San Diego Comic Con where they talked about their film “American Mary“, plus showed off their cosplaying skills for the first time at the con as well. Comic Book Divas talks with Jen and Sylvia Soska about movies, comics and cosplay."
Grade five was a changing point in my young life. It was the time that I was first told by my teacher what I could and could not read. Two loves of my life came under fire - my Stephen King books that I would read, discuss the content with my mom, then watch the movie, and my comic books. Mr. King's books where deemed 'too inappropriate' and my comics were 'not real stories'. Both counts were bullshit and I had to sneak in my reading.

Even then, I knew about Comic Con and Jen and I would talk about how cool it would be to one day go to a place where people shared interests and no one judged one another on what they loved. This past Comic Con that dream became a reality and the San Diego Comic Con was even greater than I could have imagined. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to talk to Comic Book Divas about that experience and about our filmmaking world.

Q: We talked a little bit about San Diego Comic Con; this was your first time attending the huge event, what did you think about the convention?JEN AND SYLVIA SOSKA SDCC
S: This was our first Comic Con experience. I’ve creeped on the event online through pictures, reviews, blogs, and videos on the event, but absolutely nothing could prepare me for what the event actually was. It was so incredibly happy and people were just wearing their love of the genres on their sleeve. I’m a big comic, film, and gaming nerd – so having the opportunity to hang out with so many people with the same interests is remarkable. I actually felt withdrawal when it was over. I also caught the ‘nerd flu’ but it’s a small price to pay for what was one of the best times of my life.
J: It was so much more than we expected. We had dreamed of attending for years. We had expectations. High ones, but it blew us away. We stepped into the exhibition hall on preview night and were just floored with the massiveness of it all. Kevin Smith said it best in the Comic Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope”, Comic Con is where you find everything you’ve ever loved and thought you lost.” It’s like dying and coming back and trying to describe what Heaven was like. There are no words. It’s too much everything. And the people are just so warm and kind. It’s unlike anything. I can say we’ll never miss another.

Big thank you to everyone who checks out this blog and keeps up to date with what we are up to regularly and to you new guys that were all like 'twisted twins, what's that?' and are taking a boo or two around here. Welcome to our misadventures. Glad to have you!

Flickr At Your Twins, Comic Con Style

We flickr. A lot. You want Twisted Twins pics, AMERICAN MARY pics, MONDAYS SUCK memes, anything twin-related and then some - we got a flickr account for that. So you can download, send em to your friends, or just stare off at something interesting (I, myself, scroll through pics in creep mode more than is healthy in any way).

But wait - we got some real good shit for you! It's our Comic Con onslaught pics. 2012 marks our very first Comic Con experience where we had a panel for upcoming AMERICAN MARY, first revealed the new trailer, hung out with the good DEAD HOOKER-loving folks, cosplayed like a pair of uber nerds, Deadpool stalked, got kissed by the Punisher, and fangirled on people we absolutely adore.

For many, many, many years - I have gone to Comic Con via stalking images, videos, and blogs of people who *actually* went. This year, we got super lucky and were actually there. Live the purest of nerd joy through these images. Flickr YA!

PS Why can't everyday be Comic Con? Also, I think I'm in love with Deadpool. In an unhealthy way.

Cinema Junkie Delivers the Goods at Comic Con

A great deal about how a person can reach success is rated on the people you surround yourself with. I know as a fact that without the people who have stood beside Jen and me and our work, that we could have and would have never been able to do the things we do - from our crew, our cast, our family, and our extended family in the horror community. It is at this time that I must sing the praises of one of the most hard-working women, dedicated to excellence with no holds barred, Beth Accomando, the Cinema Junkie.

If you are unaware of the awesome that is Beth, please click here to get caught up with the rest of the class. Jen and I have long dreamed of having the opportunity to go to Comic Con and with our sophomore film, AMERICAN MARY, fast approaching release, it was the chance of a lifetime not only to attend the convention as fans, but to promote the film. Being Comic Con first-timers, a lot of what the convention would be was unchartered territory for us, but Beth was there not only to support and guide us through the beautiful chaos, but she is the woman responsible for our autograph meet and greet as well as our panel.

Because Beth Accomando fucking rocks. She doesn't take no for an answer and she's the kind of woman that makes things happen. In this case, she gave us the experience of a lifetime where we got to speak on a panel discussing AMERICAN MARY with Jen, myself, Todd Masters (our master FX artist behind the film), and Paula Lindberg (our Ruby RealGirl and very first cast member) - all moderated by Beth.

Here is the full panel in all it's awesomeness for those of you that were unable to attend and those of you that want to relive the rad.

Here is the full article on AMERICAN MARY at Comic Con by Beth Accomando - take a read, pass it to your cool friends, and thank you for doing so!

I am going to be thanking Beth for the rest of my life for her kindness, and knowing her, she's just going to keep being so amazingly supportive of the independents and giving us the opportunity to do this. Thank you, Beth, we had the time of our lives and we owe it to you!

Post Comic Con Bliss & Humble Thanks to Those Who Made it the Time of Our Lives!

Today Jen and I have been hit with the 'nerd flu'. What is that? The loving nickname that the bug many people suffer post-Comic Con. Maybe it was from the crazy five days of nerd heaven, complete lack of sleep, or the sadness of having to leave the most perfect place on earth - I like to think it's something I caught from a Spider-man, Batman, Wolverine, Punisher, or Deadpool (second thought, almost definitely something from Poodle).

A most humble thanks to Randy Jablonka, our Batman and Bruce Wayne, our Soldier for Hollywood from our AMERICAN MARY team who was kind enough to show two Comic Con newbies the ropes, gets us our press passes, and keep us out of trouble. A very honoured thanks to Beth Accomando, the Cinema Junkie, who was the woman behind securing our AMERICAN MARY panel at the Con who has been a steadfast supporter of the indies and is just a remarkable woman. Check Beth's wicked article on her experience at the Con here.

I am still reeling from the incredible outpour of support, kindness, and fucking radness from the people at the Con and those in internet land that were unable to attend, but were there in awesome. We had our panel to a capacity room and many apologies to those outside that couldn't make it in. Thank you to all you fucking cool folks that stopped us, said hi, and have been the ones to make it even possible to do this for a living.

Thank you to all the sites that have been backing our insanity. I mean look at these incredibly cool folks pimping the Comic Con MARY and the new trailer! --

Here is our panel for you guys that weren't able to make it. We are going to be posting another clip with more of the panel very soon too!

There is a shit ton of pictures getting uploaded to Flickr right now. If you see any pictures of us from the Con, please send them along - took a shit ton and would love to see us hanging out with you (especially if we were all cosplaying together!)

A huge fucking stupidly honored and humble thanks to all of you that made this possible. In days, the new AMERICAN MARY trailer is at 10 000+ views. Holy fucking shit. Haven't seen her yet?

We are so excited to share this film with you all. Thank you for making it possible - your support gives a life to independent horror that it could never have without. Thank you for being amazing supportive friends to a pair of insane twins. We promise to keep working very fucking hard to somehow warrant the kindness you have shown us.

AMERICAN MARY TRAILER!!

LOVE YOU GUYS!!! MORE POSTS TO COME. MORE MARY TO COME. CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU LADIES AND GENTLEMEN TO SEE THE WHOLE FLICK!!
