DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK Tunage

There is a lot of talent out there. Artists so wickedly talented and the shitty thing is a lot of them, you might have never heard of before. When we made DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, it was of the utmost importance to represent independent talent from the cast to the crew and especially in a fucking rocking soundtrack.

Here are the artists responsible for the kick ass sound track on DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, a little bit about them, their tracks used, and where you can hear them --

INCURA
Vancouver based quintet Incura formed in the winter of 2005 in Southern Alberta and has since garnered serious attention from the press and audiences alike. The word "genre" thrown around to categorize bands is rarely applied to Incura, as they cross between numerous styles and take influence from every musical moment they hear.

Incura has never been subject to the confines of any single musical style or genre and their live performances are always met with critical acclaim.
Tracks -- THREE, SWEAT RUNS COLD, SET IN STONE, HERE TO BLAME

FAKE SHARK-REAL ZOMBIE!
Fake Shark – Real Zombie! is a Canadian dance punk band. Formed in 2005, their musical style combines elements of IDM and post-hardcore. The name is a reference to Lucio Fulci's film Zombi 2, where a real shark and a zombie engage in combat. Fake Shark-Real Zombie! was conceived by Maher and Hearn in October 2005 as a way of combining the styles of the bands they liked in hopes to one day open for them.

They met in high school, but didn't form the band until some time after graduation. To complete the band, they recruited (via Craigslist) bassist Dan Hughes and The Heck's former drummer, Malcolm Holt. Around the start of 2007, Hughes left the band and was replaced by The Heck's former and Hot Hot Heat's current bassist, Parker Bossley. The onslaught of MySpace buzz garnered the interest of Vinyl Junkie Records in Japan who released the band's debut album Zebra! Zebra! on April 25, 2007.
Tracks - DESIGNER DRUGS, JEWELRY, WTF

THE AWKWARD STAGE
The Awkward Stage is a Canadian indie pop band, based in Vancouver, British Columbia and fronted by singer-songwriter Shane Nelken. The band's supporting lineup currently consists of Tygh Runyan on lead guitar, Tony Koelwyn on drums and Chris Mitchell on trumpet and keyboards.

Nelken, who works as a cremationist, had a longtime side career in music as a supporting musician for artists such as A. C. Newman and Sparrow before forming his own band, which consists of Nelken with a rotating cast of other musicians. The Awkward Stage's debut album, Heaven Is for Easy Girls, was released on Mint Records in 2006 and quickly charted on Canadian campus radio and CBC Radio 3, which named the band's song "We're Going for a Ride" one of its Top 94 songs of 2006.
Tracks - HEAVEN IS FOR EASY GIRLS, 1000 TEENAGE HEARTS

THE STALLS
The Stalls were a three piece alternative band from Vancouver, British Columbia. The band often had a revolving backing line but was driven by co-songwriters Danny Singh and CJ Wallis. Backed with over 50 songs, The Stalls played all across North America and regularly played all major venues in and around Vancouver. The Stalls have two songs in the IFC film Dead Hooker In A Trunk called 'No Dialogue, Just Plot' and 'Ballgown Turns Black.'
Tracks - NO DIALOGUE JUST PLOT, BALLGOWN TURNS BLACK

CJ WALLIS
CJ Wallis abandoned a fifteen year professional hockey career as a goaltender shortly after earning a job interview in New York for Late Night with Conan O'Brien. In lieu of film school, Wallis volunteered for nearly four years aside filmmaker Scott Smith on his award winning debut feature film Rollercoaster, learning and helping to execute every step of production from script to screen. Since then, Wallis has gone onto direct and produce award-winning film, television and music video productions.
Tracks - DOWNSIDE UP, COWBOY PIMP THEME, GRINDHOUSE GARAGE, I NEED YOU NOW

THE TITAN GO-KINGS
Titan Go King's are one of the hundreds (or perhaps thousands) of girl-bands to follow down the cute, spunky, and sometimes silly trail originally blazed by Shonen Knife, to which they along with most pop/punk girl bands in Japan since the '0s owe large stylistic debts. Formed in Kyoto in 1996, the band only performed sporadically until 1998, when they began and gigging more consistently around the Kyoto-Osaka region. They began recording demos the same year, and the punk-centric Benten label.
Track - HIGH TENSION GIRL

THE BELLE GAME

The Belle Game is an indie pop rock band originating from Vancouver, British Columbia. Formed in July 2009, the band currently consists of permanent members Adam Nanji, Andrea Lo, Alex Andrew, and Katrina Jones. Adam Nanji and Alex Andrew, who met when they were 5 years old, played in a band called The Dazed from 2002-2007. Shortly after the band broke up, Nanji and Andrew began writing solo acoustic material, and after two years, both had released their own EPs. In July 2009, Nanji was offered an opening slot at a show at the Railway Club in Vancouver. Nanji asked Andrew if he would play drums as part of his solo act because he was formerly the drummer of The Dazed. Nanji contacted high school friend Andrea Lo to play the keyboard onstage and sing back-up vocals; however, when the band first practised together, they decided to create a band with both Nanji and Lo on lead vocals.

Adam Nanji had already previously booked studio time at Vogville Studios by the time The Belle Game was founded, so less than a month after the band was started, they headed into the studio and began recording material with producer John Franco. After five days in the studio, the band had three songs to put on to an EP with a previously unreleased solo track by Adam Nanji.
Track - WON'T GET YOU NOW

Thank you for listening and get these bands' music because they have a stupid amount of talent and deserve to be wider spread. I could have put in a tasteless DEAD HOOKER joke in that last sentence, but I didn't. I guess I'm growing up.

Midnight Marquee Mad About Movies reviews DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK

"Vancouver twins Jen and Sylvia Soska have made their debuting feature DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK and it is total bliss cinema. This film reminds me a great deal of the early, gonzo John Waters productions (during his PINK FLAMINGOS and FEMALE TROUBLE period), except the Soska film has better acting. Every character is a stereotype (called Junkie, Geek, Badass, Goody Two Shoes) and the performances are either gritty/tough or wistful/tender, but every performance seems committed and real. We believe in these rejects and ultimately come to care about them, as difficult as that may seem. In this production, everyone rolls up his or her sleeves and pitches in. Jen and Sylvia Soska star, write and direct and many of the other cast members (particularly C.J. Wallis) perform multiple duties. And they all do wonderful jobs." ~ Gary Svehla, Midnight Marquee Mad About Movies

DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK was indeed a labor of love. Cast members doubled as crew and crew doubled as cast. Crew doubled as even more crew. Watch the credits at the end of the film and see how many times names appear again and again. It was dream of ours that the passion of our outstanding team would come across, blazing brightly in the film itself. I cannot tell you the amazing feeling we get when someone watches the film and sees even a handful of the little extras and details we snuck in there. When someone, like MIDNIGHT MARQUEE: MAD ABOUT MOVIES' Gary Svehla, an esteemed professional in the business for more than 30 years, sees the film and catches every last detail we snuck in it leaves us speechless.

Now, I'd like to quote the whole article right here, word for word. It's thoughtfully written in a way that shows the writer has seen more than his fair share of films and filmmakers come and go. His review just blew us away. I don't want to blow any of the details so I insist you go right now and read the review for yourselves. I must warn you, there are spoilers, but if you haven't seen DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK by now it's nothing short of miraculous that you've found your way to our Penny Dreadful Diary.

Get the FULL SPECTACULAR DHIAT REVIEW right here!

Our most humble thanks to Gary for taking the time to both watch and review the film. You made our days, our weeks, and, more likely than not, our months. Thank you for watching and we promise the best is yet to come. We can't wait to unleash our AMERICAN MARY on the world.

What About Bob?

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste, I've been around for a long, long year, Stole many a man's soul and faith..."

Truer words are rarely spoken or, in this case, beautifully designed. Compliments to designer CJ Wallis. There is nothing this man can't do.

Jen Soska has now reached her limit of 5,000 facebook friends. However, Bob Soska is more than happy to accept your friend request. After all, 5,000 is a good start for an army, but 10,000 has a really nice ring to it...

Come join the Twisted Twins Army and let's be friends. Each and every single one of you.

Friend Bob here.

We Love Horror Happy Hour

I am a definite nerd and one of my favorite phrases, in fact MANY of my favorite phrases, comes from LOTR. "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to." And it's proven true more often than not. When we wake up in the morning, we never know where life will take us next, but I imagine that's half the fun.

This morning, something wonderful happened. We were treated to something fan~fucking~tastic and have found something new, kick ass, hilarious, brilliant, entertaining, and in all ways wicked awesome. I'm talking about HORROR HAPPY HOUR. And what is HHH? Well, it ain't just a platinum, bad boy wrestler...

HORROR HAPPY HORROR is a new love of ours. It's hosted by two of the coolest people I've ever laid eyes on who have a gore~geous, straight forward, no bullshit approach of reviewing horror, Dave and Krys Caroleo. And to make their show even more wicked awesome is that it is in fact happy hour during the review and the shots are flowing. Definitely our kind of people.

I want to quote the review. I'd actually like to quote the entire thing in one big run-on sentence of untold radness, but in a world of numerous written reviews, it's watching these two that is the best part of it all. I believe we were only a few minute sin when we turned to each other and said, "we have to visit these two when we come to New York." And we intend to.

Now, our deranged first born feature is on its way to the world as we speak or rather type. On July 29th, just a couple days away, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK will have its television premiere on the UK HORROR CHANNEL. And then at long last it's time to bring our DEAD HOOKER to North America, courtesy of IFC Midnight, who are releasing the film in limited lucky theaters during special midnight screenings across the USA and Canada. You want it in your town? Demand it. And if you're damn tired of waiting, well, shucks, you don't even have to. IFC Midnight is giving the world a taste of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK AUGUST 3rd when they're putting our girl on VOD. Yes, August 3rd is DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK Day. Tell your friends.

Want to know the ride that's waiting for you? Check out Dave and Krys' outstanding HORROR HAPPY HOUR review of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK below. It's fucking awesome.

I'm off to check out their review of INSIDE. Sylvie and I have always been divided on that one, ha ha.

A very special thank you to Dave and Krys. You've made our days. Check out their site RIGHT HERE. Subscribe to their channel and give yourself the gift of something kick ass to look forward to. We already have.

And for an added bonus, check out the lovely Krys in her killer Punisher costume. Sylv is a huge fan of mister Castle and his body of work and I have a feeling this shot means the lot of us will get along famously.

Bloody Best!

The Sweetest Thing

It's a pleasure just to be nominated, but it's DAMN sweet to win. We have been given the distinct privilege of having our PENNY DREADFUL DIARY honored with the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award.

Two fold. We were announced by the wonderful and talented Sean Thompson, of Spooky Sean's Sinful Bloggery, and the oh-so-lovely Jennifer Cooper, of Jennifer's Bodies Film Festival and Musings Of A Morleysaurus.

Thank you so much, my dear friends. It's makes us so happy to, in addition to all that film business, to be able to maintain our personal blog which ranges from covering our latest film ventures to our own personal stories and everywhere in between. Thank you for reading. It's an amazing feeling to be able to personally connect with so many people.

There are rules that go along with this award...

1) Thank and link to the person who nominated you.
2) Share 7 random facts about yourself.
3) Pass the award to 12 of your blogging buddies.
4) Notify the recipients

Now I hope I am allowed to include those who have nominated me because it would be impossible to carry on with out doing so. So I shall. It's my blog, after all. My rules.

*insert maniacal laughter here*

SEVEN RANDOM FACTS ABOUT OURSELVES

1) Sylv's favorite Ghostbuster is Dr. Peter Venkman. Mine is Dr. Egon Spengler. *sigh* Oh, Egon...

2) We're Hungarian. Though we've never returned to the "homeland", our first language was Hungarian. We didn't speak much English until we had to attend school. We learned English by watching TV.

3) We used to volunteer as camp counselors at a children's horse camp. We're very good riders and used to teach kids how to ride. We haven't been riding in far too long.

4) We still have and love our favorite childhood toys. Sylv has a stuffed lion in a plain white T named "Tigey" and I have my Roger Rabbit.

5) We know every word and every lyric in Little Shop of Horrors and tried in vain on many an occasion to put it on as a school play. No one shared our enthusiasm. The fools. We had a cat named "Seymour" after Krelborn.

6) We're both brow belts in mixed martial arts.

7) We both think monkeys are Godless, violent, little bastards and would never go near one that is free range.

And the 12 Winners as chosen by us Twisted Twins (in no particular order)...

1) MARGARET BIRD: The blog of the third member of our Triforce. Talented film maker, masterful musician and composer, and BFF, CJ Wallis. I could write volumes about this man's un-ending, awesome-y, awesome-ness, but I can imagine you get my drift. He's outstanding and his work, thoughts, inspirations, aspirations, and upcoming projects are all here.

2) CIGARETTES AND REDVINES: The definitive P.T. Anderson resource and a site that CJ Wallis has been looking after for years and years. I know you love this cinematic genius and perhaps this is a site that you have previously been unaware of. Look no further. For the latest, breaking news on all things P.T., look no further. And you're welcome.

3) THE JADED VIEWER: If you take a read of the site you'll quickly learn the Jaded Viewer reviews the world of horror, splatter, gore, cult, grindhouse, trash, b-movie, erotica, indie, asian and exploitation films. But what gives him a very special place in our demented little hearts is that he was the first blogger ever to review anything to do with our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. In fact, he reviewed and posted our very first trailer. We've loved him ever since.

4) LICK MY LIT: Yes, you did read that right. Provocative, brilliant, informed, and opinionated is our honorary third sister, Hannah Neurotica, of Ax Wound Zine and founder of Women In Horror month. Hannah is a talented writer, reviewer, interviewer, and all round artist. I am grateful everyday that she has come into our lives. Now you can welcome her and her blog into yours.

5) SPOOKY SEAN'S SINFUL BLOGGERY: Of course I must include the incredibly talented Sean Thompson, of his Sinful Bloggery. He is an outstanding writer and I am so happy to be able to also call him our friend. Please do treat yourselves to a read of his work. His stories are wonderful and the world is just that much better now that they're being published. Certainly a man to keep an eye on and both if you can spare them.

6) MUSINGS OF A MORLEYSAURUS: Truly a woman after my own heart. Jennifer Cooper is a horror nerd but as we all know nothing is more chic than geek. It's our time. Her blog is a personal favorite of ours and chalk full of keen wit, delicious turn of phrase, and the latest on horror and geek culture. A definite book mark blog for all.

7) THE BLOOD SPRAYER: Okay, it's not just a blog, but a full awesome ass site of reviews, interviews, news, and collective radity. I love the whole lot of the Blood Sprayer crew. They are masters of horror and know their shit. A special shout out goes to our outstanding friends who have been so good to us at the Blood Sprayer: Zach Shildwachter, Kristy Jett, Wes Allen, James Cortez, Shawn Savage, and Ted Brown. Now go to the site and enjoy a steaming cup of boom storm in your faces (I ensure you it's a good thing).

8) ZOMBIES DON'T RUN: Chuck Conry is wicked. From the moment we read his blog name we were in agreement. REAL zombies don't run and Chuck is the man. He's one of our beloved Horrorphilia gents, too. We love his writing style and his blog is a must stop shop for all things horror.

9) SLAMMED & DAMNED: The official blog of sensational writer Theron Neel. He was one of the very first to take a chance on and review our DEAD HOOKER. He is an astounding writer, reviewer, and interviewer. He also writes for FanGirlTastic. And he's fan~fucking~tastic himself. Any horror lover should certainly take a looky loo and enjoy.

10) FROM MIDNIGHT, WITH LOVE: Written and maintained by "The Mike". An absolutely phenomenal blog that was recently nominated for the 2010 "Best Blog" Rondo. Yes, there is a definite and indeed deliberate "horror" theme amongst these blogs, but the horror community is made up of some of the greatest people there are. We're avid readers of FMWL.

11) THE LIBERAL DEAD: The Liberal Dead is an independent horror entertainment site, ran by fans, for fans. Justin LaLiberty, Shawn Savage, and Ted Brown are horror fans and that's what makes them so damn good at what they do. They love horror and we love them right back.

12) THE ALBIN WAY: Andrea Albin is one badass bitch. She writes for the delicious STIFF Magazine, reviews, and interviews. We've met only recently but we've fallen for this talented femme fatale and her gore~geous way with words. Recently she spoke with us and the always wonderful Eli Roth. You can check that out right here.

Now I KNOW I haven't included everyone I adore. 12 is a lot, but just not enough in this case. Forgive me if you're not in this list, you're still on my "heart" list and that's not too shabby.

In closing, thank you for this distinct honor and I hope all you readers have seen a few new cool blogs to check out.

X's and O's,
Jen

Ryan Gelley likes himself a Dead Hooker In A Trunk

"Twin Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska are the masterminds responsible for Dead Hooker In A Trunk, a free-wheeling, unapologetic exploitation joyride that was one of the funnest films I’ve seen this year."
~Ryan Gelley

Ryan Gelley
is a man who knows what he likes and writes damn well.

We were delighted to have him recently review our recently released DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. To be honest, I'd love to quote his whole article.

"Dead Hooker is full of the unabashedly explicit language and violence inherent to its genre. Eyes are knocked out of their sockets, arms are severed, brains are blown out. Copious blood is spilled by baseball bats, power drills, chain saws, shaky Mohels, ice-picks and pliers. There is more than enough gore to satisfy the most blood-thirsty splatter-film fan." ~Ryan Gelley

We wanted from the very beginning to accomplish two feats. One, to make a film that was pure enjoyment for our audiences and, two, to then share that film with as many people as possible. With the release of the film quickly approaching and the film already out in Australia and the UK, it makes us so happy to see this dreams realized.

We made DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK for people who want to see a movie called DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Ryan Gelley is exactly that person and we're so happy to have our film in his hands.

"Dead Hooker In A Trunk delivers exactly what it advertises. It is a brilliantly dumb, delightfully trashy rebuke of austerity and political correctness. If you are not grinning ear-to-ear by the end of the film, it’s likely you are not a member of Dead Hooker‘s target demographic." ~Ryan Gelley

Okay, now treat yourself to the main course. You can GET THE FULL FILM REVIEW right here. Please enjoy!

Bloody Best!
Jen
