Someone Turned 6 in August

The month of August hasn't slowed down

with activities ~ we are still busy!

Somebody turned 6!!

and yes he starts Kindergarten

this year!

This year a birthday party for Grand #1
and Grand #3 is being planned
together and soon.

2021 Taken by Mommy

Grand #1 celebrated before going
on a little vacation ~ looks like
they had donuts!  and 6 candles!

We visited a week later and delivered
part of his birthday gift (the rest he
has to wait until the party).

Happy Birthday Grand #1 ~ you are growing

so very big!

Have a great year!

Windmill

While in Hill City, South Dakota
riding the trails you see many things
other than the scenery which is
beautiful!

This caught my eye....

quick drive by picture

cool!   So a better zoomed in
picture!

a wood windmill base
with a metal windmill top.

Maybe once lumber prices
return to normal I will
think about a plan for
one of these.

Forest Fires - Smokey Bear

In Hill City, SD it is a busy town with
tourists and lots of traffic.

This guy sits on one of the corners as
you pull onto their main street filled with
bars, restaurants and stores.

He is a giant woodcarving 30 feet tall and
25 feet wide created by chainsaw artists
in 10 days.  That is a huge
Smokey the Bear!

Smokey Bear was born on Aug. 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear would be the symbol for their joint effort to promote forest fire prevention.  (copied from the Forest Service website).

CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES!

Hopefully the firefighters fighting the
Greenwood Fire in Northern Minnesota
start having some luck in getting it
slowed down and can start to contain it.

Rain, Rain

 Last night we got rain (much needed rain) ~
over the weekend we had rain also.

Apprx now a total 3+ inches (rain prior to
this was back in July).
We are in a drought ~ so very dry.

Anything will help.

A mud puddle for a moment.

Another Bear Sighting

 I had a couple of more game cameras to

check ~ and look who I found....

that bear (maybe the same one or

a different one)   Not sure.

I do know that 7:50 a.m. I am usually

walking right there.  I had to look back

and on August 10th I skipped that

morning.    Hmmm that may have been

interesting although my music

may have pre-warned him.

I am anxious to see if we have any

more pictures into the fall.

(we have not had any issues in the yard

and I do have birdfeeders out)  Maybe

it is our guard cats!

Summer Game Camera Activity

 We have had some activity on the game

cameras ~ we didn't start the summer

season until after the logging was done.  The

month of June we had deer that visited.

The first part of July we had some moisture so

there were puddles or mud up in the woods

and things were green.

The first part of July we had quite a bit

of activity...

I was pretty pleased to get a head shot
of the bear (I think he/she is a residence
bear).   I usually only get a picture
of the bear butt.

There are several babies showing
up on the cameras (I say several since
there is a single and twins on at
a different location).

And some pesty raccoons.

A scraggly coyote.

And coyote pups (this is a first) - all
babies are cute!  Looking at pictures
there were 2 or 3 pups in the picture, they
apparently were on a mission and
passing through several times never
stopping to play.

The last sighting of the coyote family
was the first day of August.

We had rain the week of July 19th and
then it was dry for a month so other
than deer we didn't catch any more
animals on the cameras.

I was in the woods yesterday and it
looks like we have already had our first
hard frost - the grasses are changing, the
forest floor the plants are drooping
and dying.   It is because it is so
terrible dry here.

Maybe we will have some more
animal activity once it cools down.

August Garden Updates

The first part of August we gathered
peppers from the garden ~

Green bell peppers * jalapeno peppers
* sweet peppers  *hot peppers

Grand #1 and #3 helped pick the last
of the little broccoli sprigs (I am
surprised how much those broccoli
plants produced).

There have been a few almost ripe
tomatoes (about a handful a day); there
are many green tomatoes.

Pumpkins are growing....  I planted
some leftover seeds and I think some
of the seeds were "giant" pumpkins, they
turned orange a couple of weeks ago.

We searched for pumpkins under
the vines and the weeds (I have
a plan for next year in the works for
a cleaner pumpkin patch).

Hubby and I enjoyed the green peppers
stuffed with hamburger, cheese and
some cut up fresh hot peppers.

It was delicious!

Car Shows

 We took in two car shows this week ~

The third DL Cruise-In on the lake.  This year

we have attended all of them (so far).  In July,

they had over 400 cars and I see this past

week there was a count of 375 (so far).  That

is a great turnout!

We usually see a vehicle that we haven't

seen before ~

This painted van  :)

I have a brother-in-law that would like
this ~ he likes the Rat Rods.  I would
have liked to see how this starts and moves.

and this Desoto, a big beaut of a car.  We
enjoyed our visit with neighbors.

And this thing... 1973 Volkswagon The Thing...
the plate said ORTHNG.  Very interesting.

~~~~~~
Our local car show we attended as spectators.
The car show attendees filled up nearly all
three blocks of the Main Street.
There were some beautiful cars and several
that appeared to be just for show (and not
driven).
We see the owner of this car at the dump ~
he and his wife both race.   This car has
won several awards.
It is absolutely stunning in person!
A Jeep Jeepster
Our friend brought two of his cars ~ both very
nice.   His cars are all in excellent shape, the
Pace Car next week will be judged on its'
originality ~ we wish him luck!
