T.V. : Isis ep1 (1975)

Hey folks - had a few moments today and thought I would upload another fun retro show. This time it's the campy action adventure Isis !
Episode one of Isis from the Shazam/Isis hour .(Only the Isis story is included here.)

The Secrets of Isis was a live action CBS television series produced by Filmation in the 1970s that appeared during the Saturday morning cartoon lineup. The show was also aired in various countries around the world. It is also known by the shorter title, Isis, which is in fact its on-screen title.

Secrets of Isis was the first weekly American live-action television series starring a female superhero (predating the weekly debuts of both Wonder Woman and The Bionic Woman; the character Batgirl had been a regular on the 1960s series Batman, but was not the lead character).

The Secrets of Isis (also called simply, "Isis") starred JoAnna Cameron as Andrea Thomas, a high school science teacher who found an ancient mystical amulet on an archeological dig in Egypt. The amulet belonged to Hatshepsut, an ancient Egyptian Queen and it gave the wearer the powers of Isis. Andrea, by virtue of being able to open the casing in which the amulet rested, was recognized as an heir to Isis's secrets. Whenever Isis was needed, Andrea would reveal the amulet and incite an incantation ("Oh, mighty Isis!") and she would be transformed into the goddess Isis.

As Isis she was given great strength, the ability to move inanimate objects, and the power to fly and run at super speed. To invoke her powers, she intoned rhythmic rhyming chants, such as Oh zephyr winds which blow on high, lift me now, so I can fly, which enabled her to fly. Isis used her powers for good by capturing criminals, righting wrongs, and helping anyone who was in danger. Unlike other superheroes who responded when people called their name, Isis often came to the rescue of people who didn't call for her, arriving in the nick of time and encouraging the wrongdoer to see the error of their ways through self-reflection. Even without the help of Isis, Andrea Thomas demonstrates high intellect (in the episode "The Sound of Silence", she invents a force field powered by a uranium pellet), and also has some abilities even when not in the guise of Isis, such as in "Sound of Silence" when she gives telepathic instructions to her pet mynah bird.

The show co-starred Brian Cutler as Rick Mason and Joanna Pang as Cindy Lee. In Season 2, Ronalda Douglas joined as Renee Carroll, replacing Cindy. A romantic attraction between Rick and Andrea (and between Rick and Isis herself) is suggested in numerous episodes; in his interview on the 2007 DVD release, Cutler likens his character to a male version of Superman's Lois Lane. Commentary on the DVD release also indicates that Cindy Lee's actual function at the high school was never defined, with episodes varyingly showing her as a student and a teacher's assistant, as well as sometimes a subordinate of Andrea's and in other episodes she is shown socializing with both Andrea and Rick. Renee, by contrast, is clearly defined as Andrea's assistant; in the episode "The Cheerleader", for example, she is shown preparing the answer key for an exam (however, she is also shown cavorting with students). The abbreviated second season saw some cosmetic changes to the character of Andrea Thomas/Isis, with an attempt to soften her look with increased make-up and a new hairstyle for Isis. Her performance as Isis is also somewhat more subdued than in the first season (as can be seen when comparing her reciting of the "zephyr winds" chant in both seasons).

Three episodes of the series featured crossover appearances by Captain Marvel of the show's companion series, Shazam! and Cameron likewise appeared as Isis in three episodes of the other series.

Most storylines involved Isis coming to the rescue of high school students who find themselves endangered due to unwise choices. A notable exception was the two-part series finale "Now You See It..." and "And Now You Don't", which had an espionage-related plotline, revealing that Rick Mason has been working secretly for the government on a weather-making machine. This same two-parter introduced a trio of crime-fighting teens dubbed "The Super-Sleuths", and according to the DVD notes, was intended as a backdoor pilot for a Super-Sleuths series that never eventuated. It's not known whether this sudden change in direction from school-related plotlines to more traditional superhero adventures would have continued had production not been discontinued.

Secrets of Isis often broke the fourth wall with Isis/Andrea winking at the camera or otherwise acknowledging the audience at applicable moments (this is in addition to the "moral" segment at the end of each episode.)

More of the Cisco Kid!

Hello baby Thor

Hey folks!
I had to stop by the house and pick up some stuff to take back to the hospital but I had to drop a message to say: I'm pleased to announce my new son has arrived .Officialy 'Thor, Robert, Stan-Lee, Siddhartha, Zen, Tiger ' (whew say that 5 times fast.. and I must say my wife was awesome with allowing me the addition of Stan Lee to his name, i was happy with getting Thor as the first name but that was the big bonus.) He came in at 6lbs 6ounces -19 inches and all the toes and fingers are there. It was a long day that ended up with complications and a 'C Section' but everyone is safe and well. Unfortunetly they are still in hospital till Friday due to the surgery so naturally I'm just dropping a quick message for now and then hurrying back - more uploads are still scheduled for the next few days so keep tuned! (I hope to be 'back' online next week sometime, but knowing me ill try and make a little time over the weekend .) Take care and have a good one!

Two-Fisted Tales was a bi-monthly, anthology war comic published by EC Comics in the early 1950s. The title originated in November 1950 when Harvey Kurtzman suggested to William Gaines that they publish an adventure comic. Kurtzman became the editor of Two-Fisted Tales, and with the advent of the Korean War soon narrowed the focus to war stories. The book often took an anti-war stance. The title hit newsstands with its November/December 1950 issue, and ceased publication February 1955, producing a total of 24 issues. Years after its demise, the title was reprinted in its entirety and was adapted to television.

As with most of the EC comics published at the time, Two-Fisted Tales did not start with issue number 1, since it was renamed from a previous title. Two-Fisted Tales was a renaming of The Haunt of Fear starting with issue 18. Wholesale problems had caused Gaines to consider dropping The Haunt of Fear, but he changed his mind without skipping an issue. Two-Fisted Tales took over the numbering, and The Haunt of Fear then reverted back to the correct numbering for the remainder of its run. During the 1950s publishers would frequently change comic title names to save money on second class postage.

Artists who contributed included Kurtzman and other EC regulars such as John Severin, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, George Evans, Will Elder, Reed Crandall and Bernard Krigstein. Non-EC regulars that contributed to the comic included Alex Toth, Ric Estrada, Gene Colan, Joe Kubert, and Dave Berg.

Kurtzman wrote the majority of the comic's stories from 1950 through 1953, with Jerry De Fuccio contributing one-page text stories and the occasional regular story as well. Colin Dawkins provided the writing for the majority of the stories for 1954 and 1955, with contributions from Severin, Evans, Davis and John Putnam.

The stories Kurtzman wrote for this title often displayed an anti-war attitude. Canadian journalist Mitchell Brown wrote about the impact and influence of Kurtzman's approach: more info here on this

In addition to contemporary stories about the Korean War and World War II, Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat contained a number of stories taking place in historical settings including the Civil War, Revolutionary War, Ancient Rome and other settings.

A series of special issues dedicated to the Civil War included issues 31 and 35 of Two-Fisted Tales and issue 9 of Frontine Combat. Although originally planned to be seven issues in total, the series was never completed.

In 1991, the comic book was adapted for a TV pilot by producers Joel Silver, Richard Donner, Robert Zemeckis and others. Apart from an opening montage of covers from the comic book and use of comic's logo, this film had little connection with Kurtzman's creation. In imitation of EC's horror books, the hour-long anthology drama featured ghostly gunfighter Mr. Rush (Bill Sadler) as a host and a device to connect the segments, although Kurtzman's war-adventure stories had never been introduced by a host. Two of the stories, "Showdown" and "King of the Road," were original scripts and not adaptations from EC (although Showdown did share a title with a story from issue 37). The third story, "Yellow," was adapted from a story written by Al Feldstein and illustrated by Jack Davis for the first issue of EC's Shock SuspenStories. The pilot had a single telecast, generating little interest, and all three segments were later extracted to become individual episodes of HBO's Tales From The Crypt television series.

I'm just about off to the hospital

Well baby time is upon us here my house. We go in early on Tuesday morning for the inducement. Hopefully well have a little one by tomorrow night at the latest but as fellow dads know - who knows... I have some posts scheduled so hopefully you wont even know the difference of my absence , A note for submissions - i wont be able to get the other stuff posted for a couple days but i appreciate all the uploads and will be using them as soon as time permits.

After scouring my art (thats digitized) I found what I think is a applicable picture that I did a few years back called Balloon Babies. Its kid related but also has a bit of a twisted edge, sadly i scanned and colored it back in 2000 when programs were far from as good as they are now. (and this was from before my marriage and name change too) Not sure where i got the idea for this or if saw the picture elsewhere and then did my rendition - either way its fun and creepy. (i almost posted the baby hitler picture i did but i didnt want to jinx myself -HA!)

T.V. : Cisco Kid (3 more episodes)

Renaldo returned to the role for the popular 156-episode Ziv Television series (1950-1956), notable as one of the first TV series filmed in color. His sidekick, Pancho was played by Leo Carillo. After a long absence, the character galloped back onto TV screens with The Cisco Kid, a 1994 TV movie starring Jimmy Smits.

The Cisco Kid's cinematic sidekick, Gordito ("Fatty"), was portrayed by Chris-Pin Martin, followed by Pancho, played by Martin Garralaga and later by Leo Carrillo. For the 1994 TV film, Pancho was played by Cheech Marin. The TV episodes and the 1994 movie ended with one or the other of them making a corny joke about the adventure they had just completed. They would laugh, saying, "Oh, Pancho!" "Oh, Cisco!", before galloping off, while laughing, into the sunset. Spanish-styled Western theme music was heard as the credits rolled.

The television series Hill Street Blues briefly featured a recurring character named Alan Bradford (portrayed by Martin Ferrero). In Bradford's first appearance, episode #58, "Here's Adventure, Here's Romance" (title drawn from a lyric in the theme of the Cisco Kid television series), he was arrested while wearing western garb and stealing a horse. In an unusual twist, his delusion was not that he was the fictional Cisco Kid, but that he was the real-life actor Duncan Renaldo playing the Cisco Kid. He misidentified Hill Street supporting character Ray Calletano (portrayed by René Enríquez) as Cisco Kid actor Leo Carrillo, who'd played Pancho. In the TV series, The Lone Ranger, in a 1949 episode called Pete and Pedro, Pedro was a Mexican character who spoke just like the Cisco Kid and Pancho, portraying some of their characteristics in the episode.
