ZAPPA RELATED: Tim Dawe

PENROD
Tim Dawe
Straight Records 1058 (1969)

A fabulous unknown LP by an equally unremembered artist. Dawe's recording of "Junkie John" caused a lot of problems for FM stations because the FCC wasn't really thrilled with drug related songs at the time!
Dawe was later in a version of Iron Butterfly. This is a gem. Zappa was his mentor.

ZAPPA RELATED: Jeff Simmons

LUCILLE HAS MESSED MY MIND UP
Jeff Simmons
Straight Records 1057 (1969)
Scarce and really a great find! Jeff was a member of Zappa's Mothers and went on a solo spree producing the soundtrack for "NAKED ANGELS" and then his solo LP. Ranked as one of the better LPs released on STRAIGHT RECORDS, this is a fave of mine.

Music:Naked Angels (soundtrack) Zappa related

NAKED ANGELS SOUNDTRACK
Jeff Simmons
Straight Records 1056 (1969)
A superb mix of of acid-inspired hard rock, funky incidental music and studio experimentation, the Naked Angels soundtrack stands up well as an inventive collection of jams and conveys an infectious sense of fun and irreverence throughout.
Originally released on Frank Zappa's legendary Straight label in 1969, this hard-rocking collection was the first release from future Zappa sideman Jeff Simmons (accompanied here by session guitarist Randy Steirling). Largely instrumental, it showcases his superb guitar skills to memorable effect, and will delight collectors of rare soundtracks, biker rock fans and Zappa completists alike.

MUSIC: Henske and Yester

FAREWELL ALDEBARAN
JUDY HENSKE and JERRY YESTER
Straight Records 1052 (1969)
What a great recording! Nothing like it! Judy Henske is an amazing vocalist with a deep beautiful raspy voice. She is a folkie from way back! Jerry Yester is a fabulous arranger and musician who replaced the LATE Zal Yanovsky in the original Lovin' Spoonful. Together they recorded one of the most eclectic LPs of all time! It is one of the earliest LPs that featured electronic music, but don't let that fool you. It's got folk, jazz, rock and just about everything else you can think of-- and it comes off perfect! This recording has not been released in the states as far as I know.
It fetches BIG bucks on EBAY! You'll love it! Originally released on Zappa's STRAIGHT RECORDS!

Music: ZAPPA RELATED: Lord Buckley

LORD BUCKLEY
AN IMMACULATELY HIP ARISTOCRAT
Straight Records 1054 (1969)
This is a mind-boggling recording. If you knew Lord Buckley, you wil thoroughly enjoy this. If you are NOT familiar with Lord Buckley, you need to be initiated into his court of amazing recitals. This disc — featuring the ultra-hip humor of Lord Buckley — is among an increasingly hard to find handful of releases in the compact disc medium. The origins of this title hark back to 1970. Somehow, Frank Zappa got ahold of these Buckley raps, which had been documented by amateur recording engineer Lyle Griffin. He edited and then subsequently issued them on his Straight Records vanity label. Part of the unique charm of these five stories is that they were spun in a highly intimate setting with an audience of only a handful — as if the location may have been someone's living room. Likewise, only "Bad Rapping of the Marquis De Sade" is available elsewhere. These recordings were made at some point in 1956, and contained material that was concurrently part of Buckley's live repertoire. However, in late 1960, Buckley's cabaret card (which enabled him to work at establishments selling alcohol) was revoked — making these (or any) recordings of Buckley all the more exceptional. The extended mile-a-minute story of the Marquis De Sade — or "Da Marc" as Buckley calls him — varies only slightly from the performance version on the World Pacific release Bad Rapping of the Marquis De Sade (1969). One disconcerting difference is the intermittent microphone outages on this recording — which ultimately derail Buckley's stream-of-consciousness train of thought. "The Raven" (aka "The Bugbird") is an absolute stunning hip interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name. Buckley's recitation retains the same rhythmic patterns as the original and is likewise faithful in storyline. Both "Governor Slugwell" — which was one of Zappa's favorites — and "The Train" display Buckley's immense vocal talents. His uncanny and often eerie sense of mimicry — even in the form of a brass band — never fails to leave audiences speechless. For the hip-minded, this is an essential release.
