Movie: Manster

Half-Man, Half-Monster!

The Manster is a 1959 tokusatsu horror film, a coproduction between the US and Japan, starring Peter Dyneley. The film was notable for its creative use of special effects.

The film is also known as Doktor Satan in Greece, The Split and The Two-Headed Monster.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
American foreign news correspondent Larry Stanford (Peter Dyneley) has been working out of Japan for the last few years to the detriment of his marriage. His last assignment before returning to his wife in the United States is an interview with the renowned but reclusive scientist Dr. Robert Suzuki (Tetsu Nakamura), who lives atop a volcanic mountain.

During the brief interview, Dr. Suzuki amiably discusses his work on evolution caused by sporadic cosmic rays in the atmosphere, and professes that he has discovered a method for producing evolutionary change chemically.

Suzuki serves Larry a drugged libation, causing him to fall into a deep sleep. Announcing to Tara (Terri Zimmern), his voluptuous assistant, that Larry is the perfect candidate for his latest evolutionary experiments, he injects an unknown substance into Larry's shoulder.

Upon waking, Larry is oblivious to the true situation and accepts Suzuki's invitation to spend the next week vacationing with him around Japan. Over the next few days, Suzuki uses Tara as a beguiling distraction while conditioning Larry with mineral baths and copious amounts of alcohol, exacerbating the pain in Larry's shoulder.

Meanwhile, Larry's estranged wife (played by Dyneley's actual spouse Jane Hylton) has traveled to Japan to bring him back home with her. But when confronted, Larry refuses to leave his new life of women and carousing. After a few drinks that night Larry examines his painful shoulder to discover that a large eyeball has grown at the spot of Dr. Suzuki's injection.

Becoming aloof and solitary, Larry wanders Tokyo late at night. He murders a woman on the street, a Buddhist monk, and a psychiatrist, while slowly changing form, culminating in his growing a second head. Seeking a cure, Larry climbs the volcano to Dr. Suzuki's laboratory where Suzuki has just informed Tara that Larry has become "an entirely new species" and beyond remedy.

Entering the lab, Larry kills Suzuki and sets the building on fire as Tara flees. Larry splits into two completely separate bodies, bringing himself back to normal. The monstrous second body grabs Tara and falls into the volcano as Larry's wife and the police arrive. Larry, now cured, is taken away by the police, although it remains unclear how much moral or legal responsibility he has for his violent actions. The movie ends as Larry's wife and his friend discuss the good that remains in Larry.

"Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?" That's the question on the lips of the narrator of this tale about flying saucers, zombies and cardboard tombstones. A pair of aliens, angered by the "stupid minds" of planet Earth, set up shop in a California cemetery. Their plan: to animate an army of the dead to march on the capitals of the world. (The fact that they have only managed to resurrect three zombies to date has not discouraged them.) An intrepid airline pilot living near the cemetery must rescue his wife from this low-budget terror. "Can you prove it *didn't* happen?"

Comic: New Adventures of Charlie Chan

DC series starring the oriental detective.

Audio book: the Prisoner

Based on the famous British TV series starring Patrick McGoohan, and the Graphic Novel by Dean Motter and Mark Askwith.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Once upon a time there was a land called The Sixties, where brave men and women fought a new kind of campaign, a secret war of deception, diplomacy and sometimes murder. But many learned that in this conflict it was hard to tell who were the real enemy. That they did not even know how many factions were involved in the war.

Then there was The Village. A sinister Shangri-La for people too dangerous to be allowed freedom. A place without names. The heart of an authority that used ruthless mental conditioning and torture to rule with absolute control.
One man was brought to the island who refused to submit. His battle was long and hard, but eventually he escaped and The Village was destroyed. That’s a version of the story. One for comforting children.

Set twenty years after the final episode of the television series, Shattered Visage follows former secret agent Alice Drake as she is shipwrecked on the shores of The Village and encounters an aged, psychologically scarred Number Six. While the decades-old conflict unfolds between Six and Number Two, secret agents in London have their own plans regarding the intelligence mine that is The Village, as well as the secret lying at its very core.

BrokenSea Audio Productions is proudly dedicating this series to the memory of Patrick McGoohan (1928 - 2009)

T.V. :H.G.Wells' The Invisible Man

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Invisible Man (on screen title H.G. Wells' Invisible Man) was a 1958 ITP (Incorporated Television Programme company Ltd) Production/Official Films presentation for Associated TeleVision. The series was networked on CBS in the United States. It ran for 26 half-hour monochrome episodes across two seasons and was nominally based on the novel by H.G. Wells, one of four such television series.

The series follows the adventures of Doctor Peter Brady, a British scientist who, while attempting to achieve invisibility with light refraction (a completely different technique than the protagonist of the novel utilized), has an accident which turns him permanently invisible. He is initially declared a state secret and locked up, but eventually convinces the UK government, represented by Sir Charles Anderson, to allow him to return to his laboratory and search for an antidote ('Secret Experiment'). Almost immediately, British intelligence recruits him for an assignment ('Crisis in the Desert'), but soon security is breached ('Behind the Mask') and he becomes a celebrity ('Picnic with Death'), consequently also using his invisibility to help people in trouble, as well as solve crimes and defeat spies for his country.

In the unaired pilot episode, Canadian actor Robert Beatty provided the voice for the Invisible Man. After Ralph Smart (1908-2001), the creator, saw the pilot, he realised that he could not use it. The bandaged hero could be seen bumping into doors and scenery and the strings which animated moving objects could be seen in a number of scenes. This pilot was never transmitted but plot elements and footage from it were re-used in 'Secret Experiment,' 'Picnic with Death' and 'Bank Raid' (it is included in its entirety on the Network DVD release of the series).

A second pilot episode was made featuring Doctor Peter Brady (whose face you do not see) who is unwittingly subjected to radiation and turns invisible. While Brady searches for a cure, he also acts as an agent for the British intelligence services. The original ITC press book states that the first episode 'Secret Experiment', the second episode 'The Locked Room', the fourth episode 'Crisis in the Desert' and the Fifth episode 'Picnic with Death' should be shown first by any TV company, this directive was unfortunately ignored by UK and US broadcasters leading to episodes in which Brady's invisibility is known about by the public, such as 'Behind the Mask', being screened before its reveal in the episode 'Picnic with Death'. In these earlier episodes, the public does not know that Brady is invisible, and he wears bandages when he appears in public but the episode 'Behind the Mask' had a foreign industrialist with influence trick Brady into making him invisible too in an attempt to assassinate his country's new ruler. Subsequently, in 'Picnic with Death,' a motoring accident fully exposed Brady's invisibility, to the point that he was besieged by the Press. These same bandages Brady uses when out in public helped fugitive convict Joe Green (played by Dermot Walsh, in the episode 'Jailbreak') to escape the police when they thought he was Brady.

The invisible man himself was uncredited, but Johnny Scripps played Dr. Brady without the bandages but otherwise dressed. A midget, he was able to see through button holes in Brady's coat. Tim Turner provided his voice. The various actors who would be covered from head to toe by bandages and clothing remain unknown though Tim Turner is thought to have played the part himself in later episodes. Turner himself appeared visibly in the 'Man In Disguise' episode, though on this occasion he played a villain with a foreign accent. Among the writers recruited for the show were Ian Stuart Black, Michael Pertwee and Tony O'Grady who was better known as Brian Clemens when he later wrote for The Avengers, The Protectors and The Baron TV series. Puppeteer Jack Whitehead (who had earlier worked on Muffin the Mule) was called in to provide the brilliant special effects of the show, like cigarettes smoking while hanging in the air, wine being drunk by an invisible drinker and such.

Stuntmen risked their lives hiding in the bottom of cars, steering the car while looking from a slightly open door or in the steering a motorbike from a sidecar (once causing members of the public to try and stop what they thought was a runaway vehicle). In the second series, the camera often took on Brady's perspective which meant that the need for special effects could be cut down.

Guest stars included Peter Sallis, Leslie Phillips, Irene Handl, Honor Blackman, Patrick Troughton, Dennis Price, Dermot Walsh, Willoughby Goddard and Ian Hendry and many other stalwarts of the time.-from wiki

Audio book:Inside Star Trek - The Real Story

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
As told by Herbert F. Solow, Star Trek's co-producer, and Robert H. Justman, the executive in charge of production, this is arguably the definitive history of the TV show. After Solow was hired by Desilu Studios to find properties to sell to the networks, he met an ex-cop named Gene Roddenberry who had an idea for a science fiction series called Star Trek. Roddenberry was signed to a development deal. We see the series's genesis as it went through two pilots; how the actors were selected; its problems going over budget; and its launch on NBC in 1966. Although its ratings were low, Star Trek was renewed and would last through the 1968-69 season. With plenty of behind-the-scenes material that will be of interest to Trek fans, this book puts a good deal of emphasis on the show's business side, elucidating production difficulties, cost overruns and the seemingly constant debate with NBC over the show's future. A look at a historical TV series that Trekkies are sure to enjoy.

Movie: Scarlet Street (1945)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
German director Fritz Lang is best known for the highly influential films from relatively early in his career, especially Metropolis (1927) and M (1931).
But he also had a brief Hollywood heyday during the mid 1940s, when he made some of his best films.

Scarlet Street has been claimed by film noir.
This attribution is understandable.
The lighting is dark, with heavy use of shadows.
The characters are all shady as well.
Kitty is certainly a femme fatale, although hints are dropped that she is an inherently decent person who has become completely corrupted by Johnny.
Being the most naive, Robinson is also the most sympathetic.
But even he eventually turns to crime to fulfill his passions.

But while Scarlet Street has elements of film noir, it is in reality a black comedy.
While Robinson plays it straight throughout, Bennett and Duryea camp it up marvelously.
Bennett laughs when Robinson claims to be a painter: "And here I had you pegged as a cashier!" She also has to suppress laughter when Robinson reveals that he is married, and shock when Duryea passes her off as the mysterious painter.

Comic :The Complete Sky Masters

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

wiki- Sky Masters of the Space Force was an American, syndicated newspaper comic strip created by writer Dave Wood and penciler Jack Kirby, featuring the adventures of an American astronaut.

Sky Masters of the Space Force began life as a science-fiction strip created by artist Jack Kirby and writer Dave Wood called Space Busters, which was designed to be sold to a newspaper syndicate This strip did not sell, however.

In 1958, Harry Elmlark, "an agent from the George Matthew Adams Service", asked DC Comics editor Jack Schiff for a science-fiction comic to be adapted into strip form, to capitalize on American interest in the Space race in the wake of the previous year's launch of Sputnik. Schiff rejected Space Busters and then either collaborated in the creation of a new strip, or simply encouraged Kirby and Wood to produce "a strip that dealt with rocket launchings, moon shots, and general story lines just a little ahead of current developments in the news."

With art samples and story outline approved by Elmlark, Kirby penciled the strip, which was initially written by brothers Dick & Dave Wood and inked by the unrelated Wally Wood; at that same time, Dave Wood was also working with Kirby on the Showcase Comics issues of Kirby's "Challengers of the Unknown" feature for DC Comics, and Wally Wood would later ink issues #2-8 of Kirby's Challengers of the Unknown comic book series during the last half of 1958 and the first half of 1959. Later "Sky Masters" strips were written by Kirby, and inked by Dick Ayers, with the final month penciled and inked by Kirby alone.

Ayers described in participation in a 1996 interview:

"I also began [work on] Sky Masters, the newspaper strip. There is a lot of confusion on this; people think Wally Wood inked them all, because they're signed Kirby/Wood. But that was Dave Wood, the writer [who was unrelated to artist Wally Wood]. I began Sky Masters with the 36th Sunday page; Jack's pencils, my inks, in September of 1959. I ended the Sundays in January of 1960. I also did the dailies for a period of [over] two years, from September of '59 to December of '61. These were complete inks; I was the only one doing it at the time. Of course, Wally Wood also worked on that strip, in the beginning, before me."

Dave Wood promised Schiff "a percentage for arranging the deal," which Kirby allegedly assumed was a one-time payment but that Schiff understood to be on-going. In Spring 1958, pre-publication, Kirby verbally agreed to pay Schiff an ongoing percentage, in large part to safeguard his (Kirby's) lucrative relationship with DC. But confusion over whether the percentage should come from gross or net income (and the apparent expectation that Kirby would personally cover the strip's production costs) strained the relationship between Kirby and Schiff. Kirby also butted heads with writer Dave Wood, requesting a higher percentage of the royalties, ostensibly to cover costs of paying Wally Wood for inking. When Kirby threatened to leave the strip, Schiff implied Kirby should ink himself, and noted that Wood required money to pay his brother, Dick, who was helping with the writing.

On April 15, 1958, Schiff drew up a formal agreement documenting the royalty cuts between Kirby and Wood, and also Schiff himself (4%). By July, Schiff requested a higher percentage before the strip debuted on September 8, 1958 in "over three hundred newspapers." With the arrival of the first royalty checks, the Wood brothers sent money to Schiff, but Kirby refused, leading to tension between himself and DC. In an attempt to defuse the situation, Kirby attempted to buy Schiff out of the contract, reiterating the feeling that Schiff was only due a onetime payment rather than an on-going percentage of the royalties.

Schiff refused the offer, and subsequently fired Kirby from Challengers of the Unknown, claiming that ideas from the Challengers story conferences were finding their way into Kirby's Sky Masters work. On December 11, 1958, Kirby discovered that Schiff was suing both he and the Woods for breach of contract, and counter-sued Schiff. Kirby claimed that Schiff was merely an editor who had "assigned him, the Wood brothers, and Eddie Herron freelance work," that Kirby and the Woods had visited Elmlark without Schiff, that Schiff was not involved in the agency agreement, but that he and the Woods had offered Schiff a gift. Kirby further alleged that Schiff had implied that not paying his demands would lead to Kirby losing work at DC. Schiff's lawyer Myron Shapiro questioned Kirby at trial, and confirmed that Schiff had not verbalised such threats. Jack Liebowitz (executive vice president and general manager of National/DC) testified on Schiff's behalf, and the signed agreement promising Schiff an on-going percentage led the "very short trial at the supreme court in White Plains, New York" led to Schiff being successful. Kirby left then "market leader" DC, and returned to work for Atlas Comics, but continued to draw Sky Masters until early 1961.

Comic: Captain Victory

Captain Victory was a comic book created, written and drawn by Jack Kirby. It was first published by Pacific Comics in 1981.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One of Pacific Comics first titles, it lasted thirteen issues, plus a special, through January, 1984.

In the last issues of the Pacific series, Kirby crafted an origin story for Captain Victory which he tied in to the New Gods comic book that he had written and drawn for DC Comics in the 1970s. It was suggested that Captain Victory was the son of Orion, of the New Gods. Orion was not specifically named, but a number of clues were planted, including equipment said to belong to Captain Victory's father that was identical to the astro-harness ridden by Orion in the earlier series. Additionally, Captain Victory's grandfather, Blackmaas, was illustrated only as a cast shadow, but a shadow that to many readers bore a resemblance to Orion's father, Darkseid.

After the end of Pacific, no more was seen of Captain Victory, until Topps Comics attempted to revive the character as part of planned 5-issue mini-series, which only lasted one issue before Topps cancelled all of the 'Kirbyverse' books in 1994. The title is Victory and the 1st issue is from June 1994. This issue was a part of a more complex project named Secret City Saga.

More recently, TwoMorrows Publishing created a 'graphite edition' reprint of the first Captain Victory issue. The edition, in TwoMorrow's words, "presented [Captain Victory #1] as it was created (before it was broken up for the later Pacific Comics series), reproduced from copies of Jack's uninked pencils!"

In 2000, Jack Kirby’s grandson Jeremy Kirby launched Jack Kirby Comics, the fledgling company’s only offering being a three-issue retelling of Captain Victory, reordered and rescripted by Jeremy. The quality of issues, anyway, is judged fairly inferior of the originals, despite the interesting cover art. The title of the comic book is the same of the original of 1981. The 3rd issue was published exclusively on the web.

In March 2006, it was announced that a new series would be published, based on recently discovered initial, and rejected, character sketches for the Wonder Warriors.Jack Kirby's Galactic Bounty Hunters was co-written by Jack's daughter, Lisa, and is creator-owned by her under Marvel's Icon imprint. Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers guest starred in issue #3 of the six-issue limited series.
