SourceRa's Best of 2021

Well, finally I managed to finish my flippin' list. As before, it's not ranked but structured.
First off, there are all the EP ́s I enjoyed over the year in alphabetical order:

Best EPs

Anthrocide (USA) - Dissection Of The Abhorrent

Great debut! TDM from Colorado.

Black Hole Deity (USA) - Lair Of Xenolich

Slightly Blackened DM from Alabama - and yes no Banjo jokes here. Hope to have a full
album from them soon!

Bösedeath (GER) - Cantona Facekick Festival

This is one of those fun acts that deliver some serious shit. Highly entertaining BDM!

Brodequin (USA) - Perpetuation Of Suffering

This is actually the release which made me cheer the most when I discovered it and I
wasn't disappointed at all after hearing it. No other band comes even close to the sheer
intensity of the almighty Brodequin. Let ́s all thank god for Brodequin!

Chiliasm (FIN/POL/CAN) - Flesh Over Finite

Neoclassical / Technical DM as MA states. The production sounds a lot like good old
Swanö, but actually that guy seemingly only ever recorded this album. Be sure to check that
one out if you ́re into Spawn Of Possession or the first 2-3 Dark Tranquility albums.

Damnation (IDN) - Confessed To Denounce

Very old-school BDM from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I just realized that somehow lot ́s of
releases this year have a strong 90 ́s vibe in their production, which makes me feel a bit less
old...

Descensum (USA/EGY) - Conjure Possession

Normally when I see symphonic in the description I am a bit concerned, but here it is
executed perfectly. The symphonics (in the way of synths, of course) are not used constantly,
but rather very well placed and they don't take away anything of the ferocity of the sound.

Devil ́s Reef (USA) - A Whisper From The Cosmos

If anything the 90 ́s influence is even stronger here. Lots of Death and old Pestilence on
here.

Estuarine (USA/SWE) - Nyarlathotep

This one is hard to classify, I ́ll go with what MA writes: Experimental/Technical
DM/Grindcore. Most tracks are well under the one-minute mark, yet they are far from feeling underdeveloped. The production is also pretty awkward with very little distortion on the guitars and a somewhat muffled sound to the whole still, it fits perfectly to the music delivered and just
fits the overall aesthetic perfectly. This manages to be avant-garde and punk at the same time...I dig it!

Fulci (ITA) - Exhumed Information

Well, this is a weird one. Initially, I didn't know where to put it. Technically it's a full-
length, but actually it ́s more like what Defeated Sanity did with Dharmata - it's like a split with themselves, or two EP if you like. The first half, or side A if you're on vinyl, is some top-notch old-school brutality much in the vein of Mortician, the other half is some eerie 70/80 ́s style Synth Wave, much of the sort you would find in an actual Fulci movie.

Hideous Divinity (ITA) - LV-426

They just never disappoint me. More of the high-quality TBDM I came to expect of them
over the years. Possibly a bit more atmospheric than their previous stuff.

Obvurt (CAN) - The Beginning

TDM from Quebec, Canada - I guess I could stop here and you ́d have quite a good idea of what to expect, and so I do stop here.

Stillbirth (GER) - Strain Of Gods

Don't get fooled by the admittedly goofy artwork. There ́s some very good BDM with both tech and some very well-placed slam-riffs and bass drops.

Supreme Conception (CZE) - Empires Of The Mind

Actually, I cannot say what exactly it is, that makes any of these Technical/Classical DM bands stand out of the bulk of them all, but this one does. Can ́t put my finger on it, but this kicks some serious ass.

Unfathomable Ruination (UK) - Decennium Ruinae

For some reason, I never liked UR too much, but this one is genuinely bad-ass. I just feel these songs are better written than their older stuff. Just don't care much for the mix - the vox are way too loud and the guitars especially are way too silent and hence don ́t pack much of a punch.

As a second I ́d like to present my honourable mentions in alphabetical order. Much of which might have been among the best, if only I had more time to properly let them sink.

Honourable Mentions

A Man Named Oniguma (USA) - The Ritual Nectar

The name sort of gives it away, this is a one-man "band" from Springfield, Missouri. Pretty technical stuff going on here!

Anakim (UK) - The Elysian Void

Very good and varied TDM, alas not all tracks do it for me.

Anal Stabwound (USA) - The Visceral Sovereign

I can ́t believe this guy is only 16 years old! This is some quality TBDM, looking forward to more from this boy in the future.

Antropofago (FRA) - A Propensity for Violence... Cruelty Enslavement

A fantastic album, but somewhat cheating. Actually, this is their 2018 EP plus some new tracks, and the cover version of Machine Head ́s "Davidian" unfortunately is not very good.

Athanatos (USA) - Biogenesis

I feel this one probably deserved a place on the BOTY list but I just didn't ́t listen to it enough to really justify that. Nonetheless this is some high-quality atmospheric TDM much in the vein of Inferi and the likes.

Blightmass (USA) - Harbinger Of Lucidity

Very old-school sounding blackened DM. Reminds me a lot of ye olden swedes of Dissection and the likes.

Bloodphemy (NED) - Blood Sacrifice

This is some great 90 ́s sounding OSDM from the home of our buddy DDM. I suppose most of you will enjoy it a lot, if you didn't ́t do that already.

Broken Glass Sanctuary (USA) - A Kingdom Below

Lots of variation, mostly entertaining. Not all tracks cut it for me, though, but still a very
honorable mention.

Carcass (UK) - Torn Arteries

I think it was defleshed who pointed out that this one is a grower, and I totally agree. While my first impression wasn't ́t bad, by any means, I like it more with every spin. I might have given it a 8 or 9 out of 10 back in 1996, but today it ́s still a solid 7. I Absolutely love the cover art of this one, btw.

Cathexis (USA) - Untethered Abyss

Well, this is their 3rd full length, yet I never heard of them before (which I will definitely make up for). Some highly intriguing TDM with some Morbid Angel and even Gorguts vibes. Might also have ended upon the BOTY list, if only I would have given it some more spins.

Cognitive (USA) - Malevolent Thoughts Of A Hastenend Extinction

MA lists them as TDM/Deathcore, I ́d say it ́s much more sludgy than Deathcore. Very interesting stuff mostly mid-tempo.

Colossus (USA) - Degenesis

(not too) techy DM from Illinois. Some pretty eerie atmosphere going on here. Highly entertaining stuff. Looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Dead Exaltation (IND) - Despondent

I only know a handful of bands from India, but the ones I do know are pretty damn solid, DE is no exception. Again some 90 ́s style technical DM with some very good riffs and great vocals.

Fatuous Rump (TWN) - Perceptions of the Dark Ornaments

Slammy BDM from my man Larry Wang (that name might actually be taken directly from Shadow Warrior - I actually did look it up, the protagonists name is Lo Wang), but actually it ́s not a one-man project anymore but a complete band with Kane from Maggot Colony on the drums.

Helgast (GRE) - Tentacled Divinity

Very good and atmospheric slab of blackened DM also quite reminiscent of Dissection and the likes. This is one highly prolific one-man project, having released 7(!) full-lengthsand one EP since 2018 - which I never heard, but I am gonna make up for that as soon as this list is done.

Inferi (USA) - Vile Genesis

Inferi have always been a bit too heavy on the doodly-side of TDM, however, this is the darkest they ever sounded and (therefore?) a worthy hon men - although there ́s so much TDM stuff that just appealed way more to me...

Inhman Devotion (JAP) - Inhumanized

Ultra-fast BDM from Tokyo. At times they really try to sound like Origin (maybe even a bit too much), although they don't (yet) quite manage to pull that off, this is a very good album (and this sentence is a fucking mess!) I know a certain person that would be pretty much turned off by the dual-vox, but then I
don't think this will be Carl ́s cup of tea, anyways!

Marasmus (USA) - Necrotic Overlord

Ultra-fast old-school DM from Missouri. They have Trynt Kelly from Unmerciful on the drums, so that may give you an idea of the pace this album has at times, but there are also some slower, more atmospheric parts in here.

Nephren-Ka (FRA) From Agony To Transcendence

Very good TDM. Not a big fan of the new vocalist, though - too much "wheeee-breeeee" for my tastes. Nonetheless a very entertaining album, that might have scored higher for me if it wasn't for the vox.
Lyrically it seems to revolve around Frank Herbert ́s Dune, despite the band name being an invention of ye olde gent H.P. Lovecraft.

Noctambulist (USA) - The Barren Form

Great Black / Death from Denver, Col. with a heavy emphasis on the Black Metal part. Never would have thought Denver would be so damn cold.

Ominous Ruin (USA) Amidst Voices That Echo In Stone

TBDM from San Francisco, though they ́re more T than B in my opinion. Lots of variation here. Again this is a grower, so it would ́ve probably landed on the BOTY list if I gave it more time.

Phirimerial (IDN) - Rotten Exclamation Schemes

A rather young band from Indonesia with lots of potential. Old-school BDM the NY way.

Pleasure Of Mutilate (ECU) - Descendants Of Nibiru

Very good and brutal TDM that suffers a bit from the not-so-good production.

Saprobiontic (GER) - Apocalyptic Retribution

Most of you will know, that I always liked and also promoted them quite a bit, but for some reason this one didn't quite do it for me, initially. With time it grew on me, and now I have to say: while probably not as good as the previous stuff, this is still a damn fine DM album.

Solstice (USA) - Casting The Die

Not as good as "To Dust" was, but probably more true to what they were "back in the days", meaning very aggressive Thrash with a lot of NYHCish anger.

Swelling Repulsion (USA) - The Severed Path

This one is a strange beast. According to MA it ́s Progressive/Melodic DM and that's not wrong but there's much more to it. Firstly the whole thing is very '90s, from the aesthetics to the production and the tone. It's quite awkward initially but I got used to it rather quickly and learned to enjoy their style. What helped for me is the very compact length of the tracks - no 10min+ prog excesses here, instead the length ranges from 1:53 to 4:06, which is rather remarkable for the given (sub-)genre and a good thing in my book.

Vospison (IDN) - Diethlamide

More Indonesian greatness. The vocals are very burpy and way too much in front of the mix but there are some genuinely great moments on this album.

Werewolves (AUS) - What A Time To Be Alive

Very good aggressive Technical Brutal Black/Death Metal (phew, those sub-sub-sub genres!). Again the mix holds it back a bit, with the guitars and the bass being buried underneath the rest of it.

And now for the real meat of this list. Here come my favourite albums of 2021 - a really good year in DM, as I ́d like to point out! - in alphabetical order:

Best Of 2021

3rd War Collapse (BRA/FIN) - Damnatus

Very good slab of old-school brutality from Brazil and Finland (don ́t think I ́ve seen a collabo like that before). There ́s some old Deeds Of Flesh and some NY-style BDM on display, kind of reminding me of all those Indo BDM bands I learned to love over the last couple of years - but more on that later down the line.

Abandonment (SPA) - Focused to Imminent Desolation

Highly entertaining BDM with some surprisingly melodic moments. I think maybe Thorne might like  ́em a bit.

Abominable Putridity (RUS/USA) - Parasitic Metamorphosis Manifestation

AP is back with probably their best album, so far. Very well crafted TechBDM. It ́s only fault may be the overly "Russian" production, sounding completely artificial.

Aeon (SWE) - God Ends Here

Back after 9 years, they deliver their, hands down, best album yet! To me, they always were "the Swedish Deicide", but here they added a nice dose of Cannibal Corpse in the riffing, and the result is amazing - that ́s what I expected when Jack Owen joined Deicide, but let ́s just not talk about that...Speaking of Deicide, the only negative is the lyrics. Don ́t get me wrong, I hate the church like the next man, but these lyrics are the dullest thing this side of Glen Benton!

Alchemy Of Flesh (USA) - Ageless Abominations

OK, I know this is a blatant Morbid Angel rip-off, from the Name, the titles, the cover art, but they do it both: Dave-Vincent-era MA and Steve-Tucker-era MA, and they do it damn well, so it ́s a BOTY to me.

Asphyxiate (IDN) - Altar Of Decomposed

Here comes the first Indonesian band on this list. They play some highly atmospheric, slamming BDM somewhat akin to Australia ́s Disentomb.

Blood Red Throne (NOR) - Imperial Congregation

I followed this band since "Affiliated With The Suffering" but they stopped to amaze me after "Come Death" until I almost lost interest in them. But that new one is a real killer!

Cambion (GER/USA) - Conflegrate The Celestial Refugium

This actually is my discovery of the year. They are around since 2013 but this is their debut full length. Excellent technical blackened DM from Bavaria with Chason Westmoreland of (among others) Equipoise fame on the drums. I fucking love this album, a lot!

Cenotaph (TUR) - Precognition To Erradicate

Stellar new release from my favorite Turks. Strong emphasis on disharmonics and overall very chaotic, but in a good way.

Cerebral Effusion (SPA) - Ominous Flesh Discipline

Another fantastic album from these guys. Honestly, I could hardly tell the difference between their three releases, but that only speaks of how good all of them are. The vox are very much on the burpy side of things, so that might not be for everyone.

Devil ́s Reef (USA) - Chosen By The Sea

A great new discovery for me this year, and as a bonus they released this in January and then an equally great EP in October. They too have a strong 90 ́s influence in the production as well as in the songwriting. Very impressive for such young guys (at least judging from their MA pic).

Drawn And Quartered (USA) - Congregation Pestilence

While initially, I was not very fond of this one I learned to appreciate and even love the chaotic vibe of this album. Alas, the production still sucks ass!

Dysmorphic Demiurge (USA) - Derealization

Excellent BDM with a lot of Broken Hope vibes. Very groovy, without overly relying on the same old slam tropes. They released an album in 2020, too, which I apparently completely missed.

Erebor (UK) - Inherent Malevolence

Haven ́t seen a band with a name from Tolkien in quite a while, yet here is Erebor. Tech/Prog DM from Durham, England. Very well composed and refreshingly different from the typical high-speed neoclassical stuff most TDM bands play nowadays.

Eximperitus (BLR) - Sahrartu

Very atmospheric, mostly mid to downtempo DM with lots of dark and eerie melody but they still manage to sound heavy a.f.

Fixation On Suffering (SPA/ITA) - Desmoterion

The 2nd full-length from them and it ́s just as great as the debut. More kick-ass tech brutality with Paolo Chiti on vox.

Gore Dimension (TUR) - Ethereal Realm

And more old-school brutality with some tech in it. They remind me of Corpsegrinder-era Monstrosity as well as Sorcery/Temples..-era Kataklysm ( you know, when they actually were great).

Gore Infamous (TWN) - Excaeco Deconception

Ultra-fast BDM with really good songwriting and great vox. I love the pace of that record!

In Asymmetry (CHL) - Ashes Of Dead Worlds

Well, this band confronts me with the old "ghost-prates or pirate-ghosts" question (let ́s see who gets this reference)- are they rather technical BDM or brutal TDM?! I suppose I ́ll go for the latter, anyways this is some insanely technical stuff!

Infiltrated Mankind (CH/RUS/UKR) - Inside The Apelike

This is when sub-genres reach their limits - dark and atmospheric, brootal, highly technical and proggy DM. There ́s so much going on here it just blows my head off! A definite grower, getting bigger and better with every minute you listen.

Interminable Corruptions (RUS/ITA) - Abysmal Revelation

Another outstanding slab of technical BDM (quite sure about the ghost-pirates in this case). Again Paolo Chiti on vox, this guy does the vox for so many great bands!

Meshum (TUR) - Enigmatic Existential Essence

And another ghost-pirate. One-man project by Eren Öztürk of former Cenotaph fame (among others). As this list is not ranked I have to point out how excellent this album is in words. It ́s super fast, super technical, well-produced, superbly composed, the vox are fantastic...just check it out yourselves!

Metharoma (US/GER) - Pipe Dreams

Great BDM featuring, among others, Jacob Schmidt from Defeated Sanity and Brian Forgue of Syphilic. Whilst not being remotely as complex as neither Def. San. nor Syphilic, there ́s still some decent amount of technicality at display here. Soundwise definitely closer to Syphilic.

Pathology (USA) - The Everlasting Plague

To me, Pathology always stuck out of the regular Slam Death mass for their simple but very groovy riffs. Starting with their 2019 release they added some very cool old-school and even melodic riffs and what shall I say - I fuckin ́ love it! This one is really high up there, probably a 2nd/4th place, depending on how you read it.

Sleep Terror (USA) - Above Snakes

If you know Sleep Terror you know what to expect - blazing fast, ultra-technical DM riffs contrasted with some wild jazzy, funky, Latino weirdness thrown in. This one, as the cover already suggests is more "Spaghetti-Western" than Latino, though. It ́s a fucking blast!

Solus Ex Inferis (USA/IND/AUS/CHL) - Daemones Ceramici

Stellar Technical/Blackened DM from all around the world. I cannot say much but check it out if you are even slightly into that kind of shit!

Stheno (GRE) - Wardance

Well, MA says Grindcore/Black Metal/Crust, throw in a healthy dose of high-speed Thrash and you get fairly close to describing the sheer audial assault that is Stheno. Listen and behold (maybe not to directly - Stheno, in Greek mythology is a sister of Medusa)!

Tombstoner (USA) - Victims Of Vile Torture

Great no-frills-Death-fucking-Metal with a strong NYHC influence.

Vomit The Soul (ITA) - Cold

Finally back from the dead and they still kick some major ass! Sick Italian TBDM with very well-used slam parts.

The Unholy Triumvirate

The last three share 1st place. Even if I ranked my list, I could not pick a single one of these as a sole no. 1.

Archspire (CAN) - Bleed The Future

I assume I don't have to say much about their style, at this point. I still think their last album was not quite as good as "The Lucid Collective" was, but this one is at least as good. Technical, progressive yet still brutal AF - I don't know many bands that manage to achieve this in such an amazing way.

Cannibal Corpse (USA) - Violence Unimagined

Well, I guess this one will be on most of your lists. CC has always been one of my favourite bands and this is one of their top 3 albums (the others being "The Bleeding" and "The Wretched Spawn" - again completely on the same level of greatness). Eric Rutan is the perfect addition - even without Pat going
full nutter they should have recruited him! Jokes aside this one is definitely going to be an all-time classic - and it was obvious from the very first spin.

First Fragment (CAN) Gloire Éternelle

Despite their lyrics being all "crazy gibberish!" (let ́s try another reference and see who get ́s it - please comment below and don't forget to activate that bell!) this album is just fantastic. It ́s simply ...uplifting, I guess - a joy to behold if you will. I ́m not kidding, look at the vid to "Pantheum" - the faces these guys make, or look at the fat grin on Dominic Lapointe ́s face during his bass playthroughs - this is the face I make when listening to these guys. Speaking of Lapointe, this is the single best bass player in DM, period! He reminds me a lot of Les Claypool, granted he, of course, is much quicker than old Les, but in terms of creativity and technique, I can ́t think of anyone else that remotely comes close.

CarlG's Best of 2021

1) Asphyx (Nth) - Necroceros, a unique band here as I never got into their early stuff! Maybe the doom influence as I'm not a doom fan but in 2009 they put Martin van Drunen behind the mic with the great Death The Brutal Way album and hooked me! They followed that up with two more great albums then hit us with Necroceros in early 2021 and another superb release putting them high up on my favorite band list!

2) Humiliation (Mys) - XI: Triumphant, this is one great band! Many don't like that they stay the same, don't put any bullshit in their music but that fits my style and makes them one of my favorite bands ever. This is really a December 2020 release but was not put out until January 2021. These guys have gone 11 straight years with a new release, so far nothing since this so my fingers are crossed they will surprise us with another great album in 2022!

3) Cannibal Corpse (US) - Violence Unimagined, I've really liked this band since George Fisher took over the vocals 20 years ago, especially loved their previous Red Before Black which made #3 on my 2017 EOY list. To me these guys get better with every release and adding Eric Rutan is a big plus. One of the most solid death metal bands ever and one that I know will never give up their great sound!

4) Sepiroth (Nth) - Condemned To Suffer, a mild surprise here as these guys have a previous that made #4 on my 2015 list and I often wondered if they'd be back. Well, here they are, and what another great album that probably is a bit unknown to most and very underrated. They have changed vocalists but are still great and I hope they don't wait another 5 years to hit us up again and guess what, they are from the great land of Dutch Death Metal!

5) Dead Awaken (Swe) - The Princip Legacy, what we have here is probably my favorite "one hit wonder" death metal band! They had a great 2013 that I really love. I often joke I wonder what great band will surprise us with a new release and this one popped out of the womb. With all the social media it is rare that a band sneaks something out but this was easily my biggest surprise of 2021!

6) All Consumed (UK) - Rise Of The Godless, these guys had a great previous release that made #4 on my 2018 list. This is their 3rd release and what a great album. The Brits have done a great job in 2021 with Death Kommander, Terrible Claw, Mortuary Spawn, Seven Doors, Deliberate Miscarriage & Ravens Creed! Let us hope their greatest of all time, Benediction doesn't wait another 12 years to give us a new one!

7) Trigger (Rus) - Back To The Roots, what you have here is the perfect DM album! 41 minutes of nothing but great music, no samples, no intros, no bullshit! These guys are in a fistfight now with the great Ammonium to become my favorite band from Russia! Keep it up guys, great instrumentation, great vocals, great groove = great DFM!

8) Obscurial (Mys) - Funeral, Burial and Rites, from the land of the great Humiliation we have another slab of straight-up, no-frills, pure death metal! For you guys into progressive, different, fast or brutal death look somewhere else as this is a perfect DFM release with 10 songs at 39:09 and only negative, an intro of bullshit!

9) Macabre Decay (Swe) - Into Oblivion, I don't understand how these guys had a 2018 album that I have had but never gave much attention to and didn't even have on my list! This is a really good slab of Swedish death metal with some unique but good vocals! Damn, can the Swedes do Death Metal!

10) Massacre (US) - Resurgence, these guys had a 2014 that made #6 on my list and surprised me losing Kam Lee on vocals. They have had another resurgence here with Kam Lee back and adding the great Jonny Pettersson and Rogga to the band, so I guess no longer U.S. but now international. I guess Rogga needed some more to do as he's probably been on about 20 albums in this great year of 2021! Keep it up Massacre, you guys have ruled for 30+ years!

11) Oldskull (Tha) - Nether Hollow Of No Return, of all the bands I have in my iTunes there are not many Thailand bands, and these guys are easily the best of the bunch. I'm not good at comparing but it seems they have some of their great neighbors to the south, the mighty Humiliation in them and 9 songs at 45:44 make this an awesome listen!

12) Envig (Swe) - Gutwound, I discovered these guys back in 2015 with the release of their first demo Warmachine and they have been a favorite band ever since. This is 13 songs at 45:49 of nothing but great Swedish death metal.

13) Carnal Savagery (Swe) - Fiendish, what we have here is some more great Swedish death metal with 11 songs at 46:21 with not one second of bullshit! With 2 years of back to back albums, these guys are on a roll and while I was in the great cd store state of Florida I found this one on the shelf to add to my collection!

14) Nocturnal Hollow (Ven) - Triumphantly Evil, here we have more of what I like, 11 songs at 41:48 of nothing but pure straight up no bullshit death metal! Easily my favorite Venezuelan band and a very consistent band with a good 10-year history of solid releases. Keep it coming guys and don't change a thing!

15) Deathswarm (Swe) - Forward Into Oblivion, we have some more great Swedish death and a band that had a great previous release 2 years ago that made #7 on my list. This one is great as well but with so much competition it just hasn't climbed the list like I thought it would. It will get lots of attention in the future for sure!

16) Death Kommander (UK) - Pro Patria Mori, listed as a UK band but Metal Archives says they are Scottish, German, Greece, Poland, and Swiss so no wonder they are so good at death metal! This is more pure death with 12 songs at 49:35 so wow! We get a lot of short albums in the 25:00 range so it is great to get this long of an album of pure death metal!

17) To Descend (Swe) - Exorcism Of Hope, another good new Swedish band with their first full length and it is good! These guys give us good hope for the future with the only negative a little short at 30 minutes and guess what, another Rogga band.

18) Deimler (Esp) - A Thousand Suns, here we have another good newer band from the land of Spain and these guys have joined my list with Neter, Mass Burial, Lapidated, Unbounded Terror & Aposento to name a few from this great death metal country! More of the same with nothing but pure straight-up death metal and I love it!

19) DeadSoulAlliance (Can) - Behind The Scenes, other than some Cruel Fate and Spirit Of Rebellion Canada has been a bit slow to my tastes in death metal the last few years. Well, here they come, back with a vengeance as this is one solid slab of just what I like, with the only negative a little short at only 34 minutes!

20) Vistery (Blr) - Doomfall, here we go again, just what I like with 11 songs of 41+ minutes of nothing but pure death metal! With Posthumous Blasphemer being so quiet in recent times these guys have become my favorite Belarusian band!

21) Mass Burial (Esp) - Soulless Legions, full-length number 4 for this really solid pure death metal band! Some really good headbanging riffs and a good year for Spain with Deimler, Nasty Surgeons, great new band Impur and next hopefully some new Unbounded Terror!

22) One Day In Pain (Swe) - Doomsday Congregation, another good surprise here for fans of Swedish death metal! These guys came out of the womb in 2020 with a good solid debut and have followed it up very quickly with another slab of pure death metal!

23) Grand Cadaver (Swe) - Into The Maw Of Death, another brand new Swede band and these guys put out a good 4 song EP in February that I wore out. Then they surprised us with this 10 song full length in late October that I've somewhat ignored with only a few listens. I definitely have to get back to these guys once things settle down.

24) Saprobiontic (Ger) - Apocalyptic Retribution, a very underrated band here! These guys (& gal) had a great 2017 that I like a lot and this is a great follow-up. Some straight-up, slightly to the brutal side of pure death metal!

25) Nihilistikrypt (Est) - Diemension, another great release from this very good band with the best female death metal vocalist out there, in my opinion. They do it perfectly with 10 songs at 40+ minutes and no bullshit!

26) Eteritus (Pol) - Rotten Transition, of all the bands I love, if I had to name one that has been my favorite of the last 3 or 4 years it would without a doubt be these guys. That makes me a little disappointed in this one. They have changed vocalists, but not a negative as the guy is good but a shame this one isn't grabbing me like their 3 previous releases did.

27) Slithering Decay (Bel) - Aeons Untold, here we go, just what I love with 10 songs near 40 minutes and from a new band with only a couple demos so far. These guys from the land of the great Predatoria and Carnation have a good solid sound of death metal in them and will hopefully give us more in the future!

28) Chainsword (Pol) - Blightmarch, here we go again, 10 songs at 42+ minutes and some very good pure straight-up death metal! Maybe the great Poles are making a comeback with Eteritus, Uerberos, Disarm, Deathspawn & Vishurddha.

29) Kruor (Fin) - Aberrations, these Finnish guys are on their 4th release in 10 years and I have completely neglected them, until now. This is a very solid pure death metal album and the number of songs and length is perfect!

30) Guzarat (Idn) - Algoritma, some more good, pure, straight up what we now call "Old School" death metal from a band with no other previous releases, so hopefully, there will be more to come. The only negative to this is the length of 27 minutes.

31) Murder Worship (Bra) - Doomsday, big favorite band here, but with only 1 previous full length back in 2013 that I loved. Really great to see them back with something new and a good solid album of pure death metal from the land of our buddy Lord Frost.

32) Disarm (Pol) - Erode, wow! 13 songs at 49 plus minutes, and as I've said the Poles are making a comeback! Great new band with some good technical aspects in this from their guitarist and a first full length. Let's hope for more in the future.

33) Frozen Soul (US) - Crypt Of Ice, what we have here is more of what I love, straight up, pure, groove-oriented death metal! This album has some crazy reviews on Metal Archives, 11 of them ranging from 95 to 0. I don't understand the naysayers and the bad comments. If you don't like it, skip it but in my opinion, this is more solid good death metal, but...nothing special, different, progressive or whatever the naysayers want.

34) Concrete (Bgr) - Ethereal Atrocities, a mild fan of this really solid Bulgarian band but I have to say this is their best to me! I just wish there was more time to give these guys the listens they deserve as I enjoy this release a lot. Maybe, if death metal dies before I do I'll have albums like this to come back to!

35) Blood Red Throne (Nor) - Imperial Congregation, I was a HUGE fan of this band in the past. I have 7 of their CDs and really loved them but in 2007 when they came out with Come Death things changed. They went to a dual vocal style and you guys know my opinion on that! Well, surprise surprise! They went back from the future and their old style with pure death metal vocals.

36) Diaroe (Ger) - Willkommen In Der Desolation, fair to an average fan of these guys for 15 years now and this is another good one! I'm not good at the genre thing as Metal Archives has them as Grindcore/Death Metal but I hear pure death metal. This is a late in the year release so needs more time!

37) Arcane Dread (Grc) - A Path Befouled, really good 2 man band with some great riffs and vocals are good as well! They have a previous one that I had no idea about at the time! They do a great cover of Asphyx song Deathhammer so definitely give that a listen!

38) Corpse Worship (Rus) - Horror Chronicles, we have a new band here but guess what, guitarist and vocalist are from the great Trigger! This explains why I like it so much and guess what! Nothing but pure straight-up no-frills death metal. The only negative is opening and closing songs at 2:00 each that aren't even music.

39) Terror Sound (Dnk) - Warrior Or Victim, some more very underrated pure death metal from a one-man band and WOW, 19 songs at 1 hour + 10 minutes & 33 seconds!

40) Gravecarver (US) - Spectral Carnage, good new US band that does it right! Straight-up death metal, good vocals, nice instrumentation, and quality sound! Damn, so much good new stuff!

41) Soulinpain (Chl) - Evil, some really solid death metal from my favorite South American death metal country but with so much other great stuff this gets neglected. A good long time running band that deserves more attention. Also, 13 songs at 46+ minutes is much to my liking.

42)  Terrible Claw (UK) - Disaster Catalyst, the UK has some good stuff in 2021, and let's hope they keep it up! This is more pure death metal and over 51 minutes makes it a great listen from a newer band with only one previous release that I missed in 2018!

43) World In Ruins (Swe) - In Misery, another new Swedish band with a handful of EPs out in the last couple of years. Awesome band name and a perfect album title for me right now! Let's hope we get more from these guys in the future, Swedish death metal rules!

44) Stormgrey (Ltu) - DNA Of Chaos, another newer band from the land of Lithuania that hasn't given us much death metal. These guys are good, with one previous release and this is a solid slab of pure death metal.

45) Treyharsh (Fra) - Eternal Cycles, another slab of pure death metal, nothing special or different, just some solid same old same old DFM!

46) Tortharry (Cze) - Altars Of Ignorance, these guys are death metal legends having been around now for 30+ years with a plethora of really good releases! This is no different, very solid and more of the same. It definitely deserves more attention as my iTunes says I've only given it 9 listens.

47) Entrenchment (Rus) - Across The Red Lines, good solid new Russian band here with their first full length, and other than being a little short this is damn good! Really good vocals and some nice groove!

48) House By The Cemetary (Swe) - Rise Of The Rotten, more good Rogga stuff with Monstrosity vocalist Mike Hrubovcak doing vocals. Rogga is one death metal machine for sure!

49) Inhuman Condition (US) - Rat God, what we have here is a new US band formed by past members of the great Massacre, also 2 guys that are in Eye Of Purgatory with Rogga and current members of Ribspreader! So we have some good talent and a solid, nothing new, nothing special but good album.

50) Ossuary (Col) - Addicted To Human Flesh, really solid death metal from a newer band with 2 previous full-lengths in the last few years. Nothing special, nothing different, nothing exciting....except to a pure death metal maniac!

51) Grisly (Swe) - Salting The Earth, don't know if it's me but this Rogga band has a previous from a few years back that I loved and had at #15 on my end of year list. This one just hasn't grabbed me like that previous although it is still good, just not great.

52) Coffin Creep (Swe) - Voids, another newer Swedish band with a solid previous release and some good death metal. The only negative to me is some of the songs are near 8 minutes long and get a little slow at times.

MORE STUFF THAT GOT SOME LISTENS, BUT NOT ENOUGH!

For The Pyres (Swe) - Arless, good 4 song EP from a new Swede band with just a previous 2020 demo!

Malevolent Assault (Swe) - Blinded By Hate, a really great 4 song EP from a one man Swede band! If anyone listens to this song #2 Under The Red Sky it sounds so familiar to me that I feel it is a cover of another bands song but damned if I can remember who.

The Death Chamber's Best of 2021

Well, here we are two weeks into the new year and two years into the Roaring '20s and pretty much all of the past two years has been a shit mess for humankind but one thing that sickness, isolation, hysteria, thought-control, paranoia, and stupidity has given us is a fertile breeding ground for death metal releases. Another thing that is for sure is the death metal genre is not dying it is like Frankenstein's monster and Godzilla rolled into one and the beast just keeps getting stronger.

As has been the case for the past few years, I have not had the time to thoroughly listen to and absorb many of the new releases that came out in the past 12 months but I did give it more of an effort in 2021 especially in the latter half of the year and I am ready to put my list of favorites out into the digital ether. As has been the case in the past I am not making any claim that this list is a comprehensive ranking of the best death metal/thrash metal albums of the year, just a collection of the releases that wrecked my neck and made me want to break some shit in my own home over the past year.

As always is the case there will be several notable omissions from my list that may make some people say if he didn't include (insert name of band/album here), then this asshole doesn't know dick about death metal and I am fine with that because we all have assholes, I mean opinions, and I want to use this space to shine a light on the releases that I like and maybe others have overlooked, so if you find 1 release on this list that you missed over the past year and end up liking it, then I have accomplished my mission.

2021 Ep's

I know that ^^^^ was lazy as hell but I got to get this done 😐

There were so many more albums that I enjoyed this past year but I have to put a stake in the ground here and call it quits, so I can move forward into 2022. Here's looking forward to another stellar year in metal and hopefully a much better year for the human race.
