15mm Napoleonic Game "The Battle of Grudge Bridge"...........or is that cooking pot attached?

After my disaster from the mornings game, Ray was feeling cocky and demanded another game and more figures and I agreed as long as I had a chance of a win this time.
So I had to protect the bridge from the French (Ray)and his little gunpowder plot, Ray had one more regiment but most of his units were elite to my line class.

The contractual shot of the head honcho, big cheese, supreme leader and dictator of the Rejects......

Initial set up with my boys nearest the camera and the well named grudge bridge.....

The thin red line.......

The French move first.......

I expand to my left which turns out to be a mistake.....

The French head for my right flank in columns......

Ready for the French advance.....

The columns hit..........

I continue to do well on my left......

There goes one of the French regiments...........

The French columns win the melee and things look bleak.......

Especially as one regiment is routing..........

Ray looking smug which is his normal look to be honest........

On the left flank we are kicking French derriere..........

But on the right flank.........

Now Postie lets me know I have one roll of the dice to save these units and was the officer attached, I had to tell the little Stalin that it was a cooking pot but I would take any help.......

The cooking pot did not help.............

During this period the French sneaked two little stands on to the bridge........

I had nothing to stop the cheating French......

They placed their charges, lit the fuse and scurried away. they needed a 4,5 or 6 on a D6 to blow up the bridge and win the game.......

What a shame, I win.........

Eat my shorts Ray!

Napoleonic "Battle of Fulda" 26th of October 1813, a fictitious battle after Leipzig part 1!

6 Rejects turned up on Saturday for a 15mm napoleonic game and a fictitious battle after the battle of Leipzig between seven countries, France, Italy and Poland on one side and Prussia, Austria, Sweden and Britain on the other.

"After his defeat at Leipzig, Napoleon retreated to Erfurt with the intention of then moving to Frankfurt, casualties at Leipzig had been severe, 68,000 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner and 300 artillery pieces lost. The French have implemented a plan  to stop the Allies from slowing down the withdrawal by taking various units from their own divisions and forming a rearguard corps with instructions to hold up any enemy troops that are following the main army.
The Allies not slow on recognising that an attack on the French line of March could be an easy victory, thus detachments from the various armies have been combined into a corps to pursue and attack the French while the rest of the army is attacking various French strongholds and garrisons in the surrounding area. Some corps are quickly trying to outmaneuver Napoleon by cutting off his line of retreat!"

       ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Game: The French have learnt that the fast approaching Prussians are only about half an hour away so have taken up a defensive line blocking their advance at the town of Fulda. The French must stop the Prussian advance to win the game, the Prussians must win so they can fall on the rest of the French army retreating only a few miles away.
The game is already set up for the battle to start fighting as I know you all want blood and to start the game. Artillery ammunition is limited due to heavy fighting in the last few weeks, thus supplies are low!"

*Kind words and description supplied by our benevolent overlord and all round good guy Postie!

The French (Richard, John and myself) looked at the table and saw our doom, the Allies (Lee, Surjit and Smithy) saw better things but the dice gods saw something else maybe?

We also (French) at the beginning had to roll a dice to see how many of our units were conscript class, I was the only unlucky one with just one Polish battalion being conscript, the Prussians had a lot more due to the make up of their army (infantry and cavalry).......

Some pics of the initial set up, no forces could be moved or changed just dice to see who gets initiative every turn!

A ruined monastery is a focal point of our defence and the italians have made good use of it..........

John and his light cavalry........

The town of Fulda..............

Smithy, Surjit, John and the Despoiler of dreams.......

Richard and Lee........looking hopeful but Lee's is misplaced because he will be facing my Polish boys.......

French cuirassiers and dragoons......

French hussars, chasseurs a cheval and lancers........

French infantry and legere............

My Polish and French infantry with two fronts to defend, the field is no penalty to moving.......

My left flank, the bridge.......and the river is unfordable due to heavy rain the night before.........

The heavy rockets of the RHA, this unit had a chequered game, very funny for the French though.......

The Russian, British and Swedish forces on my left flank..........

The French stand in defence of Fulda, the white markers denote first fire bonus........

The Prussians ready to advance on two fronts.........

Austrian and Prussian cavalry emerge from the tree line...........

The Russians start their advance throwing 4 columns of infantry across the bridge, now we debated whether the cavalry would have been a better idea first but other matters conspired to affect this decision.......

The legere await the onslaught, the bridge could only be crossed in column.......

The Prussians advance towards my division with schutzen out front protecting the line regiments and columns from damage........

My polish regiments backstep to deploy at rear of hill to deploy in a better line for defence......

The log jam at the bridge but the heavy artillery battery is letting it's presence be known.......

John is winding up the Prussians (Smithy and Surjit) with his steady advance towards and through their cavalry, Smithy was the c/o but as the Rejects know Surjit doesn't listen to or take orders whilst wargaming, the bickering was a constant source of amusement to the French and even the Russian player/ally Lee!!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this point we received a message from the high command to say there were no reinforcements coming and what you had was all you were getting........oh bugger!

I'll stop here for now as there are more pictures and you're probably bored between all the words/pictures  and run out of tea, there will be a part 2 with the last of the pictures and the result which resulted in Postie having to make it up!

The Complete Military History of France,............

.......is this a fair account? Seemingly an old piece but apologies to the French especially the military, French bloggers and French friends I used to have and know:P, well technically there was probably a few Irish involved on both sides!

On my way to fecking London for a job interview with a reasonable chance of getting it (he says, well a friend put a good word in for me), stuck in a suit and tie in this fecking heat!

The Complete Military History of France

- Gallic Wars
- Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.

- Hundred Years War
- Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.

- Italian Wars
- Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians.

- Wars of Religion
- France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots

- Thirty Years War
- France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.

- War of Revolution
- Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.

- The Dutch War
- Tied

- War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War
- Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.

- War of the Spanish Succession
- Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved every since.

- American Revolution
- In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."

- French Revolution
- Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.

- The Napoleonic Wars
- Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.

- The Franco-Prussian War
- Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.

- World War I
- Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.

- World War II
- Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.

- War in Indochina
- Lost. French forces plead sickness; take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu

- Algerian Rebellion
- Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.

- War on Terrorism
- France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's.

The question for any country silly enough to count on the French should not be "Can we count on the French?", but rather "How long until France collapses?"

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."

15mm Napoleonic "The Battle of Hal" 19th June 1815 .....or What if Napoleon had won Waterloo game?

Wellington is retreating, Grouchy had managed to do what he failed to do on the actual day which was to stop the Prussian Army under Blucher from linking up with the British at Waterloo......

The Rejects (Ray, John, Smiffy, Lee and myself) met up on Saturday for a what if? encounter the day after the Battle of Waterloo, the British have failed to hold at Waterloo, Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte fell within a few hours, the order to withdraw was given but Wellington had planned for this eventuality and as he fell back he headed North-west between the town of Hal only about 8 miles from the battlefield and Brussels which was about ten miles behind the British.

Wellington had left an army at Hal to guard the road leading to Brussels but it was also acting as a rearguard in case of defeat at Waterloo, Now all eyes are on Prince Frederick of the Netherlands command and his ability to hold the French advance.

Due to the fading light and exhaustion the French camped for the night at Waterloo with their enemy not far away, early next morning Napoleons scouts have informed of the army at Hal and he has dispatched part of Reilles corps to attack Frederick's army which is covering the retreat of the main army at Hal.

The British/Hanoverian and Dutch/Belgium forces have to defeat the French forces for the war to end a day later.....

If the French defeat this allied alliance then the way is open to Brussels, forcing the allies to sue for peace, the British evacuate their army from Antwerp, the Dutch and Belgians become vassals of the French again and victory bells are heard all over France.

Could this have happened, maybe......but it would have only delayed the inevitable as the Prussians, Russians and Austrians would have had something to say about it.......

Ray and John were the allies, myself (2nd in command), Lee (3rd in command), Smiffy (Commander), my pictures were of my position on the French left flank but the main story is of a tough battle and the urine poor dice throwing of one player (Lee), I have never seen the likes of it before or hope never to see it again!

The best picture of the initial table layout I could sort of get due to being stuck in the corner like a demented baboon (sorry but I was hemmed in all day by Lee), spent my day up and down off the fecking table end trying to move figures to the great amusement of others....

I was presented with these handy adhesive markers for my spraying needs.....

I love lancers, these I believe are the French 5th Lancers......

Contractual Postie picture as he lectures us in the shenanigans to come...

Prince Jerome Bonaparte leads his forces out (he had 7 battalions of elite Legere, 6 battalions of line and a 6pdr battery), Jerome was actually wounded at Waterloo.........

The white markers denote first fire (a one off extra dice to firing)......

A slightly better view of my command (I was the Comte Maximilien Foy) also wounded at Waterloo, 7 regiments of line, 3 regiments of elite Legere and a 6pdr light battery.....

The allies await us.......

...and then there's Ray's lot!

These number markers were all over the place (rolled for reinforcements)......

Dutch conscripts hide.......

Ray points out his good Hanoverian allies......

This is when the trouble started, Hanoverian Prince Regents and Bremen & Verden Hussar regiments appear, just line class.....

Contractual blog whore picture......

You may have noticed that all French units have been reduced by about a quarter (from 16 figures to 12 figures in infantry and by 2 figures to 10 in the cavalry), this had a bad effect on the firing and staying power of the French infantry ( it was to reflect the constant fighting of the French forces), reasonable but tough.......

1st and 2nd Carabiniers (elite) and 2nd and 3rd Cuirassiers arrive with a 6pdr horse artillery battery but in a really bad place..........

This was the view of Lee (Comte Hippolyte Marie Guillame Pire) I had all day, he commanded all cavalry and including the above arrivals he also had the 1st and 6th Chasseurs a cheval and the 5th and 6th lancers with another 6pdr horse artillery battery........

Nothing too bad so far, the Hanoverians Hussars charge the French Chasseurs who counter charged and the story unfolds......

In the background 2 regiments of French lancers await while the heavy boys head to the centre to stop the British coming out to flank my infantry attack.....everything seems fine!

Instead of tweeting maybe we maybe should have been practising our dice rolling!

I approach the allied lines, in particular I am targeting the Hanoverian conscripts (the red flags denote these conscript regiments, allied brigades were a mixture of conscript and line quality)......

The Hanoverians win both cavalry combats and pursue straight into the lancers (yellow marker denotes disordered), I feel a little uneasy but Lee is still confident........

Both lancer regiments lose and the Hanoverians ready themselves again (the blue markers represent captured flags, the black represent lost flags, the red denotes routing), WTF??????

Another round and they're fecking charging again.............

I'm in and going toe to toe with musketry to weaken and break the allied line and get my elite Legere who are following behind a gap to exploit but my size of units is telling against me and where's that bleeding cavalry?

.....they they are getting there arses kicked, in three rounds of combat Lee hasn't rolled a hit (I'm thinking of shooting him between the eyes)......

3 regiments of cavalry running for their lives, Lee has failed a brigade check but pass a division check, units have dispersed........these two Hussar units would finish the game still on the table...after 7 turns!

Hit in the rear again, this loss (yet another, Lee never won a round of combat, lost 9, drew 2, failed one brigade check, passed one brigade check and failed another division check at the end again), I passed my last brigade check and unfortunately the allies passed their 2 brigade tests (caused by losing entire regiments or regiments routing in their brigades, 2D6 and roll high) and with that we lost the game by a whopping 20 points to 10 points but really Lee lost us the game......

Towards the end with cavalry in the rear I dressed my lines with British regulars on my flank..........and my camera died so I didn't get any pictures of Ray's smug laughing face!

A good game but Smiffy (Bonaparte but Reille was on the table) stood still too long and then his flank was threatened and he never advanced, the cavalry were torn to shreds and my attack was unsupported and was blunted by the allies, artillery ammunition was rolled for ( some people had more than others) but.......

.....the best plans of mice and men mean nothing to the Dice gods!

The rules are Posties home brewed General De Brigade bastardised version!

On a side note between the shenanigans of the game table climbing (some really unnessecary pictures taken by other Rejects) and some new underwear which has caused me to sit and pinch my crackers twice at work (work trousers and work seating is shocking quality) I am now walking with a limp and a pained expression.
