Mahler - Symphony No. 6 in A Minor "Tragic" [2018]

DESCARGA (320 Kbps)

The 2018 recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 6 in A Minor ("Tragic") by the Minnesota Orchestra under the baton of Osmo Vänskä is the second installment in their complete Mahler symphony cycle for BIS Records. Released on April 6, 2018, as a hybrid SACD, it is noted for its exceptional sonic clarity and massive scale, with a total duration of approximately 86 minutes.
Performance Characteristics
Tempo and Structure: Vänskä's interpretation is described as highly detailed and objective. He adopts a "sturdy marching pace" in the first movement, adhering closely to Mahler's ma non troppo (but not too much) instruction.
Movement Order: Following Mahler's later revisions and historical practice, Vänskä places the Andante moderato as the second movement and the Scherzo as the third.
The "Hammer Blows": In the massive finale, the recording features two distinct "hammer blows of fate," adhering to Mahler's final preference of two strikes instead of three.
Orchestral Detail: Critics have highlighted the recording's "crystalline" sound and the orchestra's technical accomplishment, though some reviewers noted that Vänskä's "cool" or "detached" approach may lack the raw emotional intensity found in other historical recordings.
Recording Details
Label: BIS Records (Catalog No. BIS-2266).
Format: Hybrid SACD (5.0 Surround Sound / Stereo).
Venue: Recorded at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
Reception: The recording received generally positive reviews, often earning 4 out of 5 stars from major publications like BBC Music Magazine.

Recording and Release Details
Official Release: The live recording was released on July 2, 2017, as a 2-CD set on the Brattle Media label.
Orchestra: The performance featured 116 members of the BPYO.
Discussion Tracks: Typical of Zander's recordings, the album includes extensive discussion tracks where he analyzes each movement and the symphony's revisions.
Performance Highlights
Critical Reception: The recording received high praise for its professional-level musicianship, with critics noting it rivaled fully professional outfits in precision and emotional depth.
Hammer Blows: Zander included all three hammer blows in the Finale, utilizing a large wooden crate struck with a mallet to achieve the "dull, ax-like sound" requested by Mahler.
Movement Order: Consistent with Zander's interpretive choices, the symphony is performed with the Scherzo placed second and the Andante third.
Track Timings
The performance adhered closely to Mahler’s own suggested timings:
I. Allegro energico, ma non troppo: ~23:10
II. Scherzo: ~12:00
III. Andante moderato: ~14:15
IV. Finale: ~30:00
You can listen to or purchase the recording via the official Benjamin Zander website or on major streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
