A propósito dos trompetes ao longe:

Os trompetes ao longe na música de Mahler são uma das passagens mais icónicas e evocativas da sua obra, sendo mais proeminentes em duas sinfonias em particular:

Sinfonia n.º 1, em Ré maior (Titã): A abertura da sinfonia é talvez o exemplo mais famoso. Mahler cria uma atmosfera de "despertar da natureza" (como ele próprio descreveu) com uma única nota sustentada nas cordas (um harmónico em Lá), sobre a qual trompetes (e outros metais) tocam fanfarras muito espaçadas, como se viessem de diferentes direções na paisagem. O efeito é de vastidão, solidão e antecipação.

Sinfonia n.º 3, em Ré menor: A abertura do primeiro movimento também utiliza trompetes (e trombones) em fanfarras distantes, evocando uma sensação semelhante de natureza grandiosa e primitiva a despertar.

Em ambas as obras, Mahler usa a orquestração de forma inovadora para sugerir perspetiva espacial e profundidade, fazendo com que os instrumentos soem como ecos distantes ou chamadas na imensidão.

We can’t say geography is determinant – some musicians from Mazarin arrived from Beja, others landed in the band from further south – but what’s relevant is where they crossed paths with each other, between academic studies advanced classical music studies, trips to Hot Clube in search of jazz wisdom and, specially, night clubs where they surfed the waves of contemporary hip-hop and multiple electronic speeds.

Vicente Booth (guitar), João Spencer (bass), Léo Vrillaud (keys) and João Romão (drums) are now a part of the Monster Jinx family, stepping into our purple universe with the release of a single that is the perfect indicator of the formula they have been peacefully developing in their laboratory, on western Lisbon. But the sound they dominate nowadays is the result of a troubled two-year path, filled with recordings, stages, roads and many tryouts.

The quartet showed itself for the first time in 2018, when Mazarin released their self-titled EP through Bandcamp, a work that clearly revealed the generation in which they were born, mainly by including a version of “Lavender Town”, a creation by japanese Junichi Masuda, known by many from Pokémon videogames. Rafael Toral & João Pais Filipe - Jupiter and Beyond [2020]

Jupiter, the gas giant in our Solar System, with thunderstorms a thousand times more powerful than on Earth, rainfalls of diamonds in the atmosphere, temperatures below -100°C, plenty of hydrogen, 79 moons and a South pole that looks like an abstract painting, has just the kind of environment this music seems to emanate from.

"Jupiter and Beyond", the second collaborative effort of composer/performer Rafael Toral and percussionist João Pais Filipe as a duo (after "Saturn" in 2016), is definitely not quite a record of Earth music. On the contrary, Jupiter and Beyond, is indeed gas music, unfolding over two long movements without solid body or any tangible outline, between ambient and noise. A music of sheer volume and beauty, icy, massive, in which the elements of Toral's signature, in particular his use of jazz-inspired electronics and feedback, dissolve to become a labile, nebulous, expansive material, occasionally struck by abyssal depressions and masterful densities, magnified by the return, after 17 years of silence, of the electric guitar in Rafael Toral's instrumentarium.

Towards the end of Beyond, the second piece on the record, lurking behind the volutes of feedback, a bell and a bass drum, one can detect from the distance... a barking dog, as a surreptitious and prosaic reminder of where we are here and now, a calling back to Earth. Between sadness and joy, anger and peace, movement and stillness, Jupiter and Beyond is indeed a mirror held out to us, music reflecting our times and that emotionally speaks first of all about us.

"While João Pais Filipe was drummer in the Space Quartet, we played a live duo set. During soundcheck we were jamming for a while on bowed gongs and feedback and lost track of time, it just flowed so well. I joked "we could make a whole record with this!". But later we took the idea seriously and set to record an improvised session at his cymbalsmith workshop (he made the gong on the cover and it was used in the recording). When we listened to the first take the mass of sound was amazing. At some point it reminded me of the complex clusters of sound in Ligeti's music as it appears on Kubrick's 2001 scene "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite". In the end the title felt like an apt choice for Saturn's successor. Back at my studio I felt the need for some more layers of density in some sections. I thought of using trombones, but ended up picking up the electric guitar, which I hadn't used since 2003.”

"As the title promises you, this record is a compilation of compositions for conventional, acoustic, musical instruments. And yes, it is electronic music – more exactly, there’s a laptop computer digesting a series of personal plugins (some sound like if there’s modular synthesizers being used, but you shouldn’t be surprised, André Gonçalves is the builder of the ADDAC synths). So, here you have: a contradiction of terms. If it gets you confused and makes you babble “no way”, to the Portuguese sound artist and engineer that paradox was the embraced creative challenge: to play instrumental music with custom-built software. The results are completely different from previous works by Gonçalves (compare it, for instance, with “Currents & Riptides” also released by Shhpuma) and this circumstance also comes from his natural predisposition to always cover new grounds only with the simple purpose to follow the flow and discover where it gets you. That’s why every piece is so fresh, so positively “innocent” and so astonishing, the theory comes after the praxis and it’s up to you, listener, to develop it."

Miguel Moreira - The Darkness Of The Unknown [2020]

Durante uma semana, o guitarrista e compositor Miguel Moreira partilhou as suas ideias artísticas e a sua música com uma formação excepcional que contou com o incrível clarinetista suíço Lucien Dubuis, o excelentíssimo percussionista Rui Rodrigues muito ligado à música contemporânea e aos “Drumming GP”, o fantástico e já internacionalmente reconhecido Mário Costa na bateria e também o magnifico e reconhecido bailarino convidado Valter Fernandes.

No centro deste projeto de natureza multidisciplinar, e baseado num princípio de intersecção e influência mútua entre diferentes linguagens artísticas, esteve a idea do “desconhecido” e da percepção idealística de “futuro”. O resultado desta residência foi “The Darkness Of The Unknown” de Miguel Moreira e foi apresentado e gravado ao vivo no festival Guimarães Jazz/Porta-Jazz 2019.
