"Hino" means "anthem" in portuguese, and the lyrics to this track are from the poem "Letra para um Hino" ("Lyrics for an Anthem" in portuguese) writen by the portuguese poet Manuel Alegre. This poem inspired me to create this song because this poem talks in a very simple but, at the same time, poetic way about the fact that everything is possible and that each one of us can be free if we are willing to live for it.

This album of (instrumental) songs was produced in April 2020, having been recorded from the studios of each one of the musicians, in a state of isolation.

They adopted a process to compose the tracks, in two ways:

A - each musician composed 2 songs (a long one and a short one) later heard and accompanied by the other musicians;

B - each musician composed 2 solos (a long one and a short one) later superimposed on the other solos.

Therefore:

1 - "Mosca Boreal" - 3 overlapping solos

2 - "Caput Medusa" - Guitar song, accompanied by bass clarinet and double bass

3 - "Cana Verde" - Flute song, accompanied by guitar and double bass

4 - "Une Saison En Éphémère" - Double bass song, accompanied by flute and guitar

Produzido em Abril de 2020, este álbum de canções, instrumentais, foi gravado a partir do estúdio de cada um dos três músicos em isolamento. Um método de composição dos temas foi adoptado, em duas vertentes:

A - cada um dos músicos compôs 2 canções, uma longa e uma curta, posteriormente ouvida e acompanhada pelos outros músicos;

B - cada um dos músicos compôs 2 solos, um longo e um curto, sobrepostos posteriormente aos outros solos.

Assim sendo:

César Cardoso - Dice of Tenors [2020]

This new album is the result of the intention of his mentor, César Cardoso, to seek new approaches, paths and ideas of composition and arrangement, through an extended formation. This ensemble has 8 elements, distributed by winds - tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and trombone - and rhythmic section - vibraphone, piano, double bass and drums.

Having already other projects with a quartet and a quintet and having written many arrangements for Big Band, the idea of this collective arose because it is different from what he has done and above all to challenge himself to present a record with its own identity and to approach the songs with innovation and freshness.

For this album César Cardoso chose 8 songs, 6 of which are Jazz Standards made famous by some of the greatest tenor saxophonists - Hank Mobley, Benny Golson, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson -, and composed 2 original songs to complete the album. These arrangements contain new approaches and techniques, recently studied, with the intention of creating songs as if they were new ones but at the same time without losing the essence of the originals. In addition, one of the premises was to raise the musical level through harmonic, rhythmic and metric complexity, without losing the musical side, making everything as organic as possible.

In César Cardoso’s career there are 3 albums, all with original music - “Half Step” (2010), “Bottom Shelf” (2015) and “Interchange” (2018) -, more than 100 arrangements for Orchestras and Big Bands - written mainly for the Jazz Orchestra of Leiria and for the Jazz Orchestra of Hot Clube de Portugal - plus 2 books, written in Portuguese, about Jazz Theory.

“Miles Davis - Bitches Brew” celebrated this month 50 years old, a lot was written about this record that revolutionized Jazz in 1970’s.

Nowadays we are all living an international pandemic situation that delayed all the industries and put us digitaly “together” in our houses.

Sérgio Alves aka AZAR is a talented keyboardist and producer from Porto that is about to release his first solo album with us and his first EP entitled AZAR will be out very soon. But while we put everything in order to release Azar’s EP, he proposed to rework some themes from “Miles Davis - Bitches Brew” classic record and the result is this space atmospheric ambience beat tape or instrumental sketches that live through the Azar’s aesthetics and musical pathways.

We are very proud to share with you this special rework project while we are waiting more news from Azar.
