Funcionário - Cavalcante [2022]

YANDEX (192 Kbps)

Look around you. In recent years ambient music has changed and encountering Jon Hassell's fourth world design has become easy. Most of the time there’s no feeling, no narrative, a nothingness of ideas through layers and layers of pastiche and boring bedroom music. This is not bashing. Just a reminder that sometimes the information trap delays an understanding of how good music really is.

“Cavalcante” is the new release by funcionário (born Pedro Tavares). You’ll find Jon Hassell in these eleven pieces. And yes, sometimes you’ll think about ambient music. Most of the time you’ll wonder about what is really happening. And why it's only now you’re hearing about this twenty-something musician from Setúbal, Portugal.

A little bit more than one minute into “En Garde!”, the opening track, one feels challenged by the idea that everything that was listened up to that moment was a false start. The piece abruptly stops, flips some digital sound, and restarts in a whole new direction. As this happens it becomes obvious we are in for a treat. Those two, three seconds create a sensation that everything happens in a moment that introduces you to funcionário's craft: delicate complex sounds infatuated with the idea of movement and the never-ending notion that there’s no dividers in the fourth world. Music can go beyond that.

As it moves forward – “Verde”, “Sierra” or “Publicidade Arco e Flecha” -, the album (his fourth) morphs around variations or perceptions of ambient / electronic / experimental music. And as the language evolves, it hints on how funcionário keeps stretching the boundaries of digital music as he wishes to advance to a more analog setup. In a way, he confronts foundational ideas while having breakthroughs and realizing he is at a top level. Justifiably ambitious, bright and discreetly edgy. We dare to say: monumental.

Angélica Salvi - Habitat [2022]

YANDEX (192 Kbps)

DISCO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO

There’s something familiar in the sounds that Angélica Salvi creates. In her previous record, “Phantone”, it was easy to get lost in the idea of nostalgia / past that could be listened coming from her harp.

For “Habitat”, her second record, the approach is tremendously different. She doesn’t linger in the past, she expects you to fulfill the present side-by-side with her. The idea was to create music that could be played and processed in real time. It is also the first time Angélica Salvi is working around the idea of songs – instead of pieces – and elaborating on narratives that suit that purpose.

Recorded in May on her own studio – Garagem 16 -, “Habitat” is contemporary music with the essence of pop. Angélica doesn’t exactly try a genre approach, her music is freer of restrains and shows her freedom of thinking music as a musician but also as someone that has been working on film and constantly shows her creations more in the essence of sound than exactly music per se.

The sounds of “Habitat”, since the first seconds of “Nan”, the opening song, are ethereal and melody focused, even if sometimes those melodies chase paths that are somehow labyrinthic. That doesn’t mean that the listener gets lost. There’s always a guiding light. The choice for a more direct approach on this recording proves how clear, enlightened, and focused Angélica Salvi’s sounds is.

There’s no tricks. Just something that sounds real, profound, where you can listen to Angélica’s hands moving and touching the strings. And be completely mesmerized as she continues to pursue melodies that guides the listener to the most beautiful of places.

Vítor Rua, Joana Gama - Home Sweet Sound [2022]

YANDEX (192 Kbps)

“Home Sweet Sound”, 2019

Ricardo Toscano Trio - Chasing Contradictions [2022]

DESCARGA (320 Kbps)

In Jazz music, each artist should be profoundly personal and vitally collective at the same time. For this reason, a saxophone, bass, and drum trio is a machine as demanding as it is fascinating. The absence of the piano “glue” makes the musicians look for solutions to this odd game. On one extreme we have a pure section on rhythm releasing all melodic work to the saxophone, on the other hand we can find bass and drums being able “singing” against their natural role. Between the two there are myriads of possibilities.

Saxophone ace Ricardo Toscano became famous at a very young age for his sparkling way of playing. He seemed too young for so much skill and confidence and quickly integrated into the Portuguese national jazz scene, becoming in demand in the most different contexts (inside and outside jazz, for example with fado singer Camané). Despite all the surrounding praise, the musician only released his first album at the age of 25 when he considered that the conditions were created for it to be special.

The “Ricardo Toscano quartet feat. João Pedro Coelho, Romeu Tristão and João Lopes Pereira” came out in 2018 (CF503CD). When we talk about Ricardo Toscano we are also talking about a small group of the same generation, who grew up musically together and who also distinguished themselves in their respective instruments. Toscano and Pereira (29 and 28 years old respectively) have been playing together since they were 15/14. They spent half their lives talking saxophone and drumming with each other.

The trio is a format that Toscano explores as much as the quartet. As the tunes he wrote for four don't work the same way with one less, he decided to explore the more open space that favors a greater number of unforeseen events. So, after having found a different intention and repertoire, it is not surprising that he chose to record as a trio. For this reason, this record is a new angle on the saxophonist's music, with the usual partners not being usual: Romeu Tristão on double bass and João Lopes Pereira on drums help to produce this unprecedented perspective on the saxophonist (and composer), but also about themselves. “I've always liked the sound [of a trio and] its consequences (automatically take us to other places and other universes)” says Ricardo Toscano. And that is precisely what we are looking for in a new album by one of the most representative musicians of his generation in Portugal. Music for the twenty-first century that doesn't ignore that of the previous century.

John Fletcher - 55 Pieces Of A Big Picture [2022]

YANDEX (192 Kbps)

In the early 1990s John Fletcher began studying classical guitar at the “Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa” (National Conservatory of Lisbon) with Professor Lopes e Silva, and jazz at the “Hot Club
de Portugal” jazz school, with Mário Delgado and Pedro Madaleno as teachers. Later he studied
at the “Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa” with Professors Piñeiro Nagy, António Gonçalves
and Olga Prats. JF also regularly attended the composition courses oriented by composer Emmanuel Nunes held at Calouste Gulbenkian foundation, and participated in Masterclasses by David Russell, Hopkinson Smith, Rolf Lislevand, Costas Cotsiolis, Darko Petrinjak, Joaquín Clerch, Hubert Käppel,
Carlo Marchione, Marco Socías, Robert Brightmor, Dejan Ivanovich, Javier Hinojosa, Turibio Santos, and others. In 2000 JF proceeded his studies at the Musikhögskolan i Malmö, Sweden, with
Professors Gunnar Spjuth and Göran Söllscher, where he learned to play Altgitarren (11 string alto guitar). By the composers request, JF played António Pinho Vargas’s guitar composition at the series of concerts sponsored by Culturgest in 2002 "António Pinho Vargas – Obra Completa." In 2011 JF completed a Masters in guitar teaching, at the Piaget Institute of Almada, where he developed a research on music in Protestant communities in Lisbon in between 1945 and 1965, under guidance of Professors Helena Ribeiro de Castro and Dejan Ivanovich as supervisors. In addition to regularly perform solo and chamber music concerts, and to participate on recordings of various music styles, JF also collaborates in projects covering different periods and styles, here highlighted: Jogralesca, Orquestra de Jazz Humanitária, Coro Gospel de Azeitão, Omaira, and duos with clarinetist Fausto Corneo and Luthier Orlando Trindade. Currently JF is working with renowned composers, developing new repertoire for the Altgitarren. Along with his concert activity JF has been dedicated to teaching classical guitar at different conservatories in Portugal, and currently teaches at the Conservatório Regional de Setúbal and Conservatório Regional de Palmela.

Tiago Sousa - Ripples On The Surface [2022]

YANDEX (192 Kbps)

Releasing music since 2006, Tiago Sousa is one of most talented and heartfelt pianists of his generation. His compositions are soulful, generous, and mindful. He has released records on Immune, Discrepant and for years oversaw Merzbau, a visionary Portuguese label that inspired many in the mid-2000s. After years of flirting, we are very happy to announce Tiago's first release on Holuzam, “Ripples On The Surface”.
The opener “Sunflowers” sits close to Steve Reich – “Music For 18 Musicians” – and Manuel Göttsching if he had forgotten to press “house mode on” on “E2-E4”. It is new ground for Tiago. He has spent the last decade and a half building momentum for this, breaking from a classical/contemporary aesthetic to a composition layered with minimalist and mechanical ideas that manifest his talent at its peak.
“Ripples On The Surface” follows the first volume of “Organic Music Tapes” (Discrepant / Sucata Tapes), a series in which the musician will be trying different approaches to the piano, aiming for a more organic process of creating music. Not that his music needed more heart, but we find it admirable that he keeps pushing boundaries and attempts grandiosity with a piece like “Sunflowers”.
It is nothing short of mind-blowing, and much of what comes after seems to acknowledge that. The next three tracks – “Red Pine”, “Blossoms” and “The Time Binder”, with an “Interlude” in the middle – are more calm, relaxing, inviting you to come down from the peak reached with “Sunflowers”. This subtle descent into reality is a part of the same whole. For that reason also, "Ripples On The Surface” is Tiago Sousa's most accomplished record to date.
