"This was our last jam session of the year and we had to cancel the November one because I fell off a ladder and broke a rib. This one was a little different as well as I could not bring any of the heavy synths like the Nord Lead or the Hammond, which was so fun to play last time.

Anyway, I loaded the Kyuss CD in the player and off I went. 52km to Martin´s house. It was a beautiful sunny day when I arrived about 9:30. We unloaded the car and chatted as I set up all the gear and we were ready for the first jam in less than an hour.

We had 6 jams today. I felt like I was not really in the zone for the first couple but the last 3 were really excellent, especially the final acoustic jam. We filmed jam 4 and took some Christmas shots as well (Thanks Kate!). In the end it was a great session. Best jams were 3, 5 and 6."

Considered one of the most talented and sui generis portuguese bassists of his generation, after a seven-year hiatus without presenting any record under his own name, Hugo Carvalhais, one of the best kept secrets of Portugal's jazz scene, is back with an album and he never stops surprising us.

After three internationally acclaimed albums with the participation of musicians such as Tim Berne, Emile Parisien Dominique Pifarély, Mário Costa and Gabriel Pinto, there is something new coming up. "Nebulosa" (2010, Clean Feed Records) introduced us to the infinitely great. "Particula" (2012, Clean Feed Records) was about the infinitely small. Between these two immeasurable extremes "Grand Valis" (2015, Clean Feed Records) questioned the nature of the outer reality we perceive and where we move in everyday life. And here we come across the new "Ascetica" (2022, Clean Feed Records), a plunge into our inner selves and the depths of consciousness that has always been there since the beginning of human experience. It is in this unfathomable place that since the dawn of time we have been confronted with enigmas, beauty, fear, wonder, light and darkness.

Shrouded in strangeness and mystery, "Ascetica" is based on a search for those fleeting moments, when something magical occurs. The term “magical” is a simplification - because these moments are actually inexplicable. They only occur from time to time. We don't know why or how. As lovers of jazz music, we sometimes recognise them. That is the quest. That is what Carvalhais is attempting to achieve. We encounter them in “Ascetica”.

Sérgio Carolino - Below 0 [2022]

If you’re a committed music lover you already know this: Portuguese musician Sérgio Carolino is one of the most important tuba players in the world, in any of the several domains he covers, classical, contemporary, jazz, improvised or experimental. And if you’re familiar with the Clean Feed catalogue you have already heard him with the band TGB. Now he plays solo with an instrument of his own invention, the Lusophone "Lucifer", inspired on the Oren-o-Phone by British superlative musician, also tuba player, Oren Marshall. The instrument is made with old parts from some frontal bell tubas used in the 50's and 60's in the studios. The instrument was based on the Jazzophon, a trumpet in the shape of a saxophone with two bells made and used around 1927. The objective of “Below 0” couldn’t be more clear and ambitious: to “create soundscapes never before explored”. And indeed this happens: you’ve never heard anything like this in your life. A kind of exploration that avoids looking at the ground (“you can’t see anything”), preferring the vision of an entire sky (“at the risk of stumble, but also of profiting from an aurora borealis”). Risk is the key-word here, as in accepting the “imminence of error”.

O disco apresenta as seguintes obras fundamentais:

Claude Debussy: Quarteto de Cordas em Sol Menor, Op. 10 – Uma obra de 1893 que rompeu com as formas tradicionais através do seu sistema cíclico e cores harmónicas.

Maurice Ravel: Quarteto de Cordas em Fá Maior – Composto em 1903 e dedicado a Gabriel Fauré, é conhecido pela sua textura refinada e perfeição formal.

Albert Roussel: Quarteto de Cordas em Ré Maior, Op. 45 – Uma obra mais tardia (1932) que exibe o estilo neoclássico e contrapontístico do compositor.

O Grupo: Quatuor Via Nova 

O Quatuor Via Nova foi um dos mais prestigiados quartetos franceses do século XX, contando com músicos de renome como Roland Pidoux e Gérard Caussé. Eram particularmente aclamados pela sua interpretação do repertório romântico tardio e moderno francês, oferecendo uma sonoridade que equilibra o rigor técnico com a sensibilidade tímbrica característica desta escola.

Sirr is specially thrilllled to present the debut album of Joana de Sá.

“Shatter” was made between December 2021 and February 2022.

It is mostly made from guitar and synthesiser loops, inspired by songs I've heard previously or during this time period.

In a symbiotic way between what I heard and absorbed and what I later created in these two months, the album pops from a need to escape from certain circumstances and personal dispositions induced by the environment I was surrounded by.

Born in may 2001, Joana Sá is an audiovisual artist from Mortágua, a small village located in the centre of Portugal. Her artistic interests stray between analog photography, drawing, illustration and experimental electronic music. In her sound work, she essentially explores, textural melodic repetitions made with guitar, synthezsiser or voice phrases all articulated to form a loop.

Special thanks to my family and friends, Zé Borges, Paulo Cardoso and Virgílio Oliveira.
