Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air

A long, grey, chilly week shivers to its conclusion - and it's time to celebrate!

In fact, let's make it a double celebration, for yesterday was the 85th birthday of the simply faboo Miss Candi Staton, one of the last presiding "Queens of Disco" -

- and, indeed, of House!

Thank Disco Candi It's Friday - and have a great weekend, dear reader!

Singin' them straight to the heart songs

Our glorious Ipomoea lobata ("Spanish Flag") is at its peak.

The weekend draws ever closer, and the forecasters think it may be warm one - all the more excuse to sit with a glass or several of something refreshing in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers!

As we look forward to it, our party mood is helped all the more by two important celebrations.

Today is the centenary of the legendary Mr Alan Jay Lerner - the man who, with Frederick Loewe created the classic Broadway musicals My Fair Lady, Gigi, Brigadoon, Camelot and Paint Your Wagon (all of which also became classic movies)...

...and tomorrow, the last surviving BeeGee Sir Barry Gibb blows out 72 candles on his cake!

Neatly combining tributes to both men in one, how about Sir Barry's lovely song that pays tribute to the natural "home" of Mr Lerner's works?

Miss Candi Staton's version, of course. Thank Disco It's Friday!

Here we are in a room full of strangers
I'm standing in the dark
Where your eyes couldn't see me

Well, I have to follow you
Though you did not want me to
But that won't stop my lovin' you
I just can't stay away

Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight to the heart songs

Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town

Now in my place
There are so many others
Standin' in the line
How long will they stand between us?

Well, I have to follow you
Though you didn't want me to
But I just can't stop lovin' you babe
Say, can't stay away

Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight to the heart songs

Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air

Sometimes when I post one of these timeslip moments, I suddenly feel as if time has really rocketed away...

For can it really be a quarter of a century since the whole world freaked out (me included) to a remix of (of all things) a heartfelt gospel choon?

In this week in 1991: the first Gulf War was coming to its bitter end, renewed IRA violence hit London, the beating of Rodney King by police in Los Angeles was about to lead to rioting, and Estonia and Latvia became independent of Russia; The Silence of the Lambs, Sleeping with the Enemy and L.A. Story were on the big screen; and on telly were The Brittas Empire, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Jimmy Nail in Spender .

In the UK charts, Bart Simpson(!) was at Number 1 - and trailing in his wake: Queen Madge, The Clash, Oleta Adams, Nomad, KLF, 808 State, Princess Kylie, MC Hammer... and this absolute dance classic.

Turn the volume up for this bassline:

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you

Sometimes I feel like saying, "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes it seems the going is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then I feel like life is just too much
But you've got the love I need to see me through

When food is gone, you are my daily meal (hmmm)
When friends are gone I know my Saviour's love is real
Your love is real

You've got the love, you've got the love, you've got the love (hmmm)
You've got the love, you've got the love, you've got the love

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you

Sometimes I feel like saying, "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through

Hallelujah, honey!

Broadway Baby

After the sad news of the death of one of our greatest Patron Saints Miss Elaine Stritch yesterday, it is difficult to muster up a party mood for the looming weekend.

However, we'll give it a try. Let the weekend celebrations begin in the capable hands of the marvellous Miss Candi Staton, swathed in satin, and what could easily be a tribute to the Broadway Belter herself - Nights on Broadway!

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a good (hot) weekend...

It's high time, just one crack at life

Daaahlings! It's the end of another week, and of the slough of despond that inevitably follows the peaks of adrenaline of last weekend's Gay Pride day. Time to party!

To start, I'm off to see the Bette Bourne biographical film It Goes With The Shoes at the V&A tonight.

Best of all - summer appears to be here at last (with temperatures this weekend predicted to hit 27C/81F)!

With such dazzling sunshine to look forward to, our thoughts inevitably travel back to that legendary long, hot summer of 1976. And in this week 37 years ago, as Britons watched in awe as the pavements melted and the reservoirs dried up, Miss Candi Staton made her triumphal debut in the charts.

Let us don our most outlandish feather necklaces and sing along with the anthem for the old and the bitter - Young Hearts Run Free...Thank Disco It's Friday!
