Amsterdam vult mijn gedachten

The grachten are beckoning us...

By the time you see this, dear reader, we will quite possibly have landed in the capital of gaydom, Amsterdam!

There is only one song I need to play, really...

It's a tradition.

"Normal" service will be resumed next Tuesday.

Want in Mokum ben ik rijk, en gelukkig tegelijk

By the time you read this, dear reader, we should be in the skies across the North Sea heading for our beloved Amsterdam!

Only one song will do (it's traditional!):

Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Dat is mooier dan Parijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Mijn Mokums paradijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Met zijn Amstel en het IJ
Want in Mokum ben ik rijk
En gelukkig tegelijk
Geef mij maar Amsterdam

"Normal" service will resume some time after our return on Monday...

De koning van het levenslied

We have a centenary to celebrate, and I almost missed it! One hundred years ago yesterday, the Dutch musical legend that is Johnny Jordaan was born.

So revered is Mijnheer Jordaan in Amsterdam that he has a whole Plein named after him, complete with a statue (later joined by those of fellow musical legends Tante Leen, Manke Nelis and Johnny Meyer):

Not really so surprising, as most (if not all) the great man's wonderful sing-a-long "levenslied" numbers are indeed dedicated to our favourite city, like these...

...and this one, which I play every year as we depart for our annual long weekend in Mokum:

Johnny Jordaan (born Johannes Hendricus van Musscher, 7th February 1924 – 8th January 1989)

Want in Mokum ben ik rijk en gelukkig tegelijk

We're off on our little be-masked, social-distancing-at-all-times adventure to Amsterdam today! Yay!

Unfortunately our convenient early evening flight was changed by the gnomes at EasyJet to one that doesn't arrive at Schiphol till 10pm local time, which means we probably won't even get to our hotel till after 11, buggering up our first night good-and-proper - but regardless, we'll be wallowing in the loveliness of the city its locals call "Mokum" for a few [possibly hot!] days, which is something we've been looking forward to for months.

Here's our traditional send-off number...

"Normal" service may resume next Tuesday or Wednesday, dear reader...

Gelukkig

By the time you see this, dear reader, we will almost be landing in our favourite city in the world (bar London), Amsterdam for a much-needed mini-break for my birthday on Saturday!

There is only one song left to play, really...

"Normal" service will be resumed in about a week.

Mijn Mokums paradijs

By the time you read this, dear reader, we will be heading off to the joys of our favourite city (after London, of course), Amsterdam for their fantabulosa Gay Pride!

All together now...

Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Dat is mooier dan Parijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Mijn Mokums paradijs

See you next week, dear chums!

Mijn Mokums paradijs

By the time you read this, dear reader, we should already be in the most beautiful city of them all - and singing along with Johnny Jordaan, no doubt...

Dat is mooier dan Parijs

By time you read this, dear hearts, we shall be in the throes of travel to our most beloved of all cities (London aside) - AMSTERDAM!

I will be sure to bring you all back a tasteful present such as the above.

Meanwhile, here's the only song to play for such an occasion. Take it away, Johnny Jordaan!

Geef mij maar Amsterdam, indeed!

[Back Monday!]

Kleine jodeljongen

And so, dear reader, by the time you read this we should be well on our way for a well-deserved weekend - for my 50th birthday tomorrow - in the city of all cities, Amsterdam! I really cannot believe it has been three years since we were last there (I used to go at least once, if not more times, every year).

To celebrate, I have chosen some examples of the type of music we go there for!

We love an old-time pub sing-a-long. Over here, it is in in the tradition of Music Hall tunes (Roll Out The Barrel, Oh What A Beauty, Down At The Old Bull And Bush, Let's All Go Down The Strand, that sort of thing).

In Holland, this tradition is called "Levenslied" ("Songs about Life").

And here are some of our beloved masters of that genre...

Ik houd van Nederlandse muziek!

Geef mij maar Amsterdam

As we look out on the grey and grizzly weather that greets us this Thursday, wondering exactly how good or bad our trip to the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park is likely to be this evening if it is raining, there is one shining light that keeps us going - our trip to Amsterdam tomorrow!

Why not take a little trip around that beautiful city, in the company of musical legends Johnny Jordaan and Manke Nelis?! Enjoy...

Geef mij maar Amsterdam

To conclude this few days of "Amsterdam Specialities", here is probably the best-loved singer of them all... So revered is Johnny Jordaan in Amsterdam that he has a whole Plein named after him, complete with a statue (later joined by those of fellow musical legends Tante Leen, Manke Nelis and Johnny Meyer).
