Final post for OWAC VIII - the army shot

Apologies for the brief post but life is proving interesting at the moment, especially with medical issues, luckily not mine or my immediate family, but friends. Any way on with the show.

Month one Asgard goblins - the intention.

 First month - ten goblins.

Second month - more Asgard goblins

Third month - Leaders

Plus a little bonus - Citadel Wyvern

Month five - A change of plan, Citadel goblins

 Month six - more goblins

Final month -  even more goblins
Plus a chariot

And a few orcs just to be sure.

The army shot for OWAC VIII, showing most of what I painted over the course of the challenge.

A great experience.

Once more, it's been my great pleasure to take part in OWAC alongside so many talented painters. And now, I've painted almost my entire collection of older Chaos miniatures, which I'm quite proud of. My favourites this year were the Land Raider, the Daemon Prince, and the Sorcerer on Disc. It's been a bit of a tricky year for my motivation, and there's definately some models that I wished I'd taken some more time over. Still, seeing them all together, I'm very happy with the effect.

Throughout the year, one thought keeps coming back to me when I've been painting...

I want to paint orks again!

All being well, I will do just that next year.

Congratulations to all of my fellow participants, there's some stunning armies this year.

Frank's Great Work Continued, A Daemonic Legion of Slaanesh - Wrap-up - July

This brings me to the end of my second Old World Army Challenge. I accomplished quite a bit, but not as much as I had set out to. Despite this, there is now a whole new Undead Auxiliaries contingent added to my Slaaneshi Legion. And while these are mostly the daemonic equivalent of cannon-fodder, a number of chaos spawn and other creatures of chaos joined the horde adding middle of the road cost fighters in what is otherwise a very points heavy army. Last, but not least, several powerful spellcaster characters were drawn to the ranks adding some interesting looking models to the leaders of the Legion. Thanks to the efforts of the organizers to herd all us cats and keep the webpage running and churning out all the great inspiration, and a salute to my fellow challengers who slogged through the OWAC 'fighting season'.

In total, for my OWAC IIX, here are the season's additions...

Cult of the Unflagging Revelers (Undead Auxiliaries)

Undead Minotaur Champion w/ 4 rewards, and daemon weapon                                       230

Skeleton Warriors w/ chaos weapons x20                                                                           200

Skeleton Warriors w/ Seeking bows x12                                                                             240

Touched of Slaanesh (Creatures of Chaos)

Harpies x6                                                                                                                            90

"The Pale Worms", Minotaurs x5                                                                                        200

'15' Minotaur Champion w/ chaos weapons                                                                        240

Spawn of Slaanesh x5                                                                                                         500

        Champions and Allies

"The Golden Pair", Mighty Champion of Slaanesh & Familiar w/ 10 rewards                    360

Dragon w/o wings, 3+ chaos attributes                                                                               600

Total Models = 55 (63 adjusted for OWAC8 size standards)                    Total Points = 3,815

Finally, I couldn't resist bringing out the entire legion for a parade. They are starting to look like a proper army, and I dare say there are few of its like out there now. I hope they convey the feel of those fabulous pictures of armies in Slaves to Darkness that (to my then 14 year old eyes) were wild, mad, and seemingly utterly unattainable. My collecting, crafting, and painting of this project spreads over many years now and I think I am finally nearing its end. I just might have enough additions for one more OWAC in me though. We shall see...

Ben's Stirland Undead - Wrap up post

During July, I did a quick paint job on some zombies to bulk out my army.  Firstly, some Zombie Ogres, slightly converted for variety, from the Mantic 'Dwarf Kings Hold' game that has popped up throughout this challenge.  And secondly, some GW/Fireforge peasant zombies, which unfortunately got a bit messed up by trying to spray undercoat them on a rare hot, dry day, but did give me the chance to paint the last banner photocopied from the Undead Army book.

11 Zombies, Banner - 48 pts
Necromancer - 68 pts
3 x Allied Chaos Trolls, Banner - 260 pts

Then of course I got the whole army out on the table.  Right Flank (Skeletons):

Left Flank (Cavalry):

Shadespyre's July Post - OWAC VIII Wrap Up Post - High Elves of Lothern - 3304 points, 96 models

OWAC VIII - Wrap up - High Elves of Lothern

July

No new miniatures to show you, I haven't added anything new since last month. Instead, I can share some (blurry) pictures of the whole force together.

The block of infantry at the rear right of the photos is not a whole new unit, I just made and decorated a skirmish style movement tray to stand all those individual miniatures on.

What I've ended up with is a small force dominated by cavalry and archers, which I suppose is to be expected for High Elves. With just one solid infantry block it's an army that would rely on aggressive tactics, your best chance of victory would be to smash the enemy in one decisive cavalry charge.

The intention of sharing a basing style with the Wood Elf army (from OWAC VII) is that the Lothern troops could be deployed as an allied force (though it would require a huge game to field all of both!), which would bring a heavy cavalry element which is missing from that army.

It would be fun, but far too much work, to get all of my Wood and High Elves set up on the same table for a photo call. Maybe one day, but not any time soon I'm afraid.

It's a much smaller army (half the size or less) of my last three OWAC projects, which made it a bit more manageable, even though I actually ended up painting more miniatures than I expected. Will I add to it? Possibly. I'd need to find substantial numbers of the miniatures from the range that suit being units - it seems unlikely I'll get that lucky again, but you never know!

I like how the simple heraldry works this time around. The "decal on a plain background" has been a choice born of desperation and laziness before now, but I think it looks much better here than on the Dark Elves, for example.

Thnaks to everyone who left comments, critique and encouragement this year, being part of this group is inspiring and (most importantly) great fun.

OWAC IX

I really don't know right now. Those with long memories will remember that right back when I joined the OWAC group I worried that my participation was threatened by my back problems? Well, after much frustration I am finally on a waiting list for surgery to hopefully fix me, and so until I have a date confrmed for that I can't be sure what months of 2026 I will be fit to paint in... hopefully all will be clear before December!

Owac VIII_Sybou_Final Post

 Hello everyone,

here we are, ready for the final post. I'm glad I arrived alived at the end of this challenge.

Even if i wasn't bad in following my plan, I still left 6 riders undone.

Summer's month, june and july were too busy for me and I didn't touch my painting tools for 2 months.

Anyway, this challenge wasn't a total faillure as I succided in painting 80 miniatures!

It's me!

Here are a couple of photos of my borderprinces army:

The Baron's army still needs a lots of work to be done: bowmen, billmen, footknights, knights, spearmen, a giant, bears riders and ... The Baron himself.

If i'm making progress during autumn and winter, I could use Owac IX to finish this army.

Otherwise, depending of the thematics, I could do:
  • Chaos dwarves,
  • More Chaos guys,
  • Genestealers cult,
  • Dogs of War,
  • Undeads.
A lots of choices for my next quest :)

Before finishing, here is a last photo:

Congratulations to all OWAC members, a lots of cool projects here, nice to be part of the team for another year.

Take care everyone and until next time!

Cheers,                                                                                                                            Sybou

George's Bad Moonz, Wrap Up Post

Big Gobb was proud. Very proud.

After countless humiliating defeats he’d won a battle! Just like his father had won all those battles!

Close observers might have noted that Big Gobb was standing at the back, far from danger as his boyz charged the enemy lines. But there weren’t any close observers.

To celebrate his first victory, Big Gobb had raised a mighty banner as more and more boyz flocked to the WAAARGH!

Now Big Gobb and his big mob were ready to take on anyone and everyone. As they prepared to march into the galaxy in the hunt for glory, the boss took a moment to soak it all in.

He was a flash git. And he bloody loved it.

I’m chuffed to bits to have finished this challenge!

Bringing Big Gobb’s mob to life has been so much fun, and I’m delighted to finish a project that has been ongoing for 2.5 years! Having said that, there are plenty of orky models I had collected and still need to paint. Life, work etc. forced me to reduce my plans, but I was pleased to finally add a banner this month.

This is the first time that I’ve painted orcs and I’ve loved it. The Rogue Trader era originals are a joy (and let’s not forget that Hero Quest wizard!) and the recent sculpts from Old School Miniatures, Foundry, Ramshackle Games and Knightmare Miniatures blend in really nicely.

Bad Moonz are a great fit for me: bright colours and weird. I've found my clan!

Huge thanks to Byron and the tireless committee who keep this challenge going. And to the other challengers for the motivation and inspiring projects. So many glorious armies to enjoy!

But I don’t have too much time to enjoy the celebrations as I’m planning something pretty big for OWAC IX. It’s already time to get the modelling knife out!

Total Army Points:

Warboss: 90 points

Warboss’s Retinue (5 x Nobz, 5 x boyz): 310 points

2 x Weirdboyz: 100 points

1 x Mekaniak: 15 points

3 X drill bosses: 60 points

Big Mobb (10 x boyz): 280 points

1 x Rhino: 350 points

Total: 1,250 points

The army as a whole

...ALL ROADS LEAD TO REIKDORF...

It's finally finished. 8 long months of preparation, construction, painting, stress... and it's done.
Now that we've reached the end, I can say it: this army is the first and only army I've ever finished!
Let me explain:
Of course, I've painted armies before, for myself or on commission, but for the first time a project meets my personal standards of completeness.

1- Planning on paper from the start.
Since I had to present the project at the end of December, this was the first time in my modeling life that I analyzed the models in my collection, decided what and how much to buy, and assembled the different units in an organized way before starting. Usually, like many of us, I buy what I like when I feel like it or what I need when I can, but not this time.

2- A playable army.
An important aspect, but equally difficult to achieve: a finished army is a playable army: therefore, with a minimum number of characters, basic regiments, etc., but also with some competitive units and some extras, such as the battle standard bearer and some pieces with an extra punch. I've often painted projects like this, especially on commission, but in my personal collection there are more loose pieces than organized armies. This is one of the few.

3- No backlog.
And here's the real news! Having planned everything in advance, squeezing every model and buying only the bare minimum, I find myself with NO extra unfinished models! Of course, this doesn't mean I don't have a pile of shame. On the contrary, my pile of shame is higher than ever. It just means I have nothing left to paint for this specific army. Not even a single humble warrior... even the leftover bitz are no more than a small handful.

4- The parts make the whole.
I've met some of the previous requirements before in my modeling life, especially when working on commission and painting the entire set, or when preparing an army for a battle, or maybe when you just buy a couple of boxes to start a new faction and finish them in one go... but this is truly the first time I've managed to meet all these requirements at once, and I did it FOR ME! It's an incredible, overwhelming feeling. Like when you finish a good book and you're left with that mixed feeling of satisfaction and emptiness... but you can't wait to read another. And I can't wait to start the next project, another army for the next OWAC!

Now I'll let the images do the talking, but first, one last fundamental consideration:
This project has another great record. It made me want to play again, and it also got my wife and children involved. We planned a table together, created some basic scenery elements, and even played a few introductory games. The family loved them and slowly started painting some miniatures themselves. I never thought this challenge would yield such incredible results. Most of the time, we played by splitting this single army in two, to play smaller battles with the new miniatures, and this forced me to tackle another BSB, and here it is.

Tried to match the first One in shapes and colors.

The base model is Valerie Duval from the old Warzone range, a model I found damaged beyond repair in a batch many years ago.
Pic for reference

Catachan arms slighty shaped.. fit and wonderful.

With a little putty work, I think she's more than fit to carry the army's secondary banner. She's super confident, tough, and fit, like a true Barbarian warrior should be.
Fierce and proud!

I love her, and she's turned out to be one of my favorite pieces. I'm not entirely happy with the freehand on the shield, but I decided to settle for it.

Now onto the beauty shots.

And some more...

The Hunt begins...

Chariots racing around the village

Björn and Dragor planning the next raid.

Redmane warband leaving the gates.

Björn's warband protecting the village from and orc raiding party.

The nobles speeding through the fields to join the Battle.

Orcs! The messenger brings word of the incoming invasion.

The outer outpost must be fitted for defense.

"Here you are!"

Queen Griselda, mother of Sigmar, praying to the Gods of Mankind

Sigmar and Ravenna, back to back against the green tide.

Protecting Foamhenge from the ravaging orcs

Points, let's talk about points:
As I said, I'm not at all familiar with the third edition rules (I'm a 5th edition guy), and I don't think I've fully grasped how to calculate points, especially for characters and the unit command group.
But here it is, as I thought at the end of December. The value is probably much higher than that (with the command groups and hero options), but it would probably also be illegal in the composition of individual units and the hero/core/special/rare ratios.

*) name (count as): equipment. Points

-----------Heroes and command: Total 467--------

1) barbarian leader (Chaos champion): 2 hand weapons, heavy armor. 130pt

2) barbarian leader (Chaos champion): two-handed weapon, heavy armor. 130pt

3) barbarian leader (Chaos champion): hand weapon, shield heavy armor. 129pt

4) barbarian banner bearer (chaos champion): hand weapon, army banner, heavy armor. 178pt

----------------Rank and files: Total 1106-----------------

1) barbarian warband (20 chaos thugs): 2 hand weapons, light armor. 180pt

2) barbarian warband (20 chaos thugs): hand weapon, shield, light armor. 180pt

3) barbarian cavalry (10 mounted chaos thugs): hand weapon, light armor, shield 180pt

4) 2 barbarian chariots (8 marauder horsemen with heavy armour ).  376pt

5) barbarian hunting party (10 chaos thugs): hand weapon, light armor, bow. 100pt

6) barbarian hunting party (10 chaos thugs): hand weapon, light armor, shields, javelines, (throwing axes).       100pt

Total.  1.573

I left out the second BSB, the warrior queen, and the additional plastic models, which weren't planned at the start of the project.
I would have liked to prepare some extras, some surprises, maybe a large monster or an additional unit, in this final month, but I didn't find anything I really liked, so I limited myself to making some new scenery elements. Over the last few months, I've built a more than decent collection, as you can see from the photos. In total, we have:
- a couple of new forest bases
- a village of huts and shacks
- a chief's longhouse
- a modular log fortress with a gate, walls, and towers
- an entire stone circle, more than properly named Foamhenge
- a rocky hill, the first of many
- and above all, a regulation-sized table to host our games in the studio.

That's all, I think. This time too, I got carried away by excessive verbosity. I'll definitely be back next year with a new, incredible project (but I don't know which one yet). In the meantime, keep painting.

 Stay true, stay oldschool.  🤘🏼
