George's Bad Moons: Leader

Big Gobb's father had built an empire, fuelled by blood thirsty conquest and the irresistible call of the WAAARGH! With every victory more households flocked to his banner until he commanded a mob so big that it was feared across the galaxy.

While his father was alive, Big Gobb had enjoyed basking in his glory. He would shout about his father's achievements as if they were his own . He bossed everyone around and lived a life of luxury,

But now his father was dead and gone, Big Gobb was finding it hard to re-create the glory days. He had taken over the big mob and driven it to a succession of defeats. And eventually the boyz began to drift away, seeking better fights with better bosses. Then nobz who had been loyal to Big Gobb's father left too. Eventually only a skeleton army remained, formed of those too loyal, too mad or too lazy to desert.

Big Gobb knew he needed something big to restore the family reputation and he had big plans: storm a squat stronghold. Kills all the dwarfs. Steal all their treasure. Once he'd pulled that one off, he could go back to his life of luxury and shouting.

Now he needed to muster a mob. A big mob. And to do that, he needed to look the part. Big Gobb called upon the finest ork tailors and instructed them to make a uniform befitting of a conquering general. Then he started to shout.

Phew! Well, I had big plans for January. I was aiming to have painted enough boyz to make up the big mob, and extras for later in the challenge. But then that old friend Life parked itself in front of the hobby desk and I barely managed an initial basecoat in the first three weeks.

I opted to press the panic button and went straight for painting my leader. Certainly not part of the plan, but at least it means I'm still in the challenge.

The model is a lovely sculpt from Ramshackle Games. He is the perfect Big Gobb - pointing, shouting and avoiding any of the hard work!

The paint job turned out OK, although I would have loved more time and to have painted with natural light (I struggle painting with artificial lights). But, hey, I'm still standing!

And I managed to paint my tribute miniature for Chris Howell. Chris is painting a chaos warrior army for this challenge - I've never collected or painted chaos, but did find this cheeky chappy amongst my childhood collection. He's a Chaos Sorcerer from Heartbreaker Miniatures, sculpted by Phil Lewis in the early 90s.

And lastly a huge THANK YOU to Richard Bennett. Richard sent me two beautifully painted minis, with Big Gobb references! I was blown away when they arrived and they inspired me to keep painting. Thanks again!

Big Gobb!

Shouting!

More shouting!

My offering for Chris Howell: Chaos Sorcerer!

And the wonderful minis I received from Richard Bennett - even includes a Big Gobb reference!

JUNE: Tom's Space Orks - Wildcard (176points)

June - Wildcard month!

Absolutely steamed through this month, and then completely ran out of puff in the last week. Having used all my 'safety net' models (except a few of the Snotling lads below), I knuckled down and painted hard, and now I don't want to paint another orky thing for a while 😅
Anyways...

Lil' snotling runty assistants:
I'm not one really for specifically going out and collecting, say a complete range of minis from the get go. However, nearing the end of the challenge, I had a look through the catalogues and saw that my gretchin range was nearly complete. I put a call out on one of those facebook trading pages, and lo, these snotling guys came up... How could I say no! (I am still rooting around for a few, but they are nigh on impossible to find).

MARCH: Tom's Space Orks (R&F month 2 of 4): 199points

A glory shot of all The Glory! I am so pleased  to have painted all the freebooters :)
(here's a link to last years orky OWAC: link)

Eeerrgh! Most of this month was me putting off painting the bikes and not painting anything else because I need to paint the bikes. Anyway, motivation for them has deserted me, so I leave a half painted trio of minis and swap them out for something a bit more fun.

Fortunately, I'd already made a start on these Freebooters during the previous months in preparation for such an eventuality so the pressure of the bikes is alleviated pushed on to next month 😬

Freebooters:

A happy lil bolta boy - sporting a reconditioned space marine bolta...

A boy with his pride and joy - a plasma gun! Arguments about whether the heavy plasma is better caused this boy to once lose his cool, and unfortunately, his eye as well.

A khorne boy. He has an affinity for red and his stubgun (which makes a satisfyingly loud bang). Not as satisfying as the squishy noise the 'umies make when caught in his power fist...

Just red trouser stripes for this boy. I feared a wider strip would somehow be too red, and this thin stripe would/is be a nightmare to line with blue... His horns are sadly lacking their point, but I'd like to think it's from a ferocious 'eadbutt charge rather than anything else.

This boy's carrying the goods! Also the spikey horns are particularly *ahem* eye catching.

Crabman. This was the very last of the freebooter sculpts that I painted. I found him difficult to get going, and a little tricky on the colour placement. I thought the yellow shoulders would work because of the dark helmet, but maybe I should have switched the colours round. Either way I like him, the scamp :)

The Kaptin! Rumour has it that the fur cloak is actually a common boar with some 'alter-ray-shuns' and not actually a wolf that he killed in a fight with some rock 'ard space marines.

No one discusses this matter within ear shot of the Kaptin.

These freebooters have obviously spent a little too long floating in the warp abroad their spacehulk, and have been slightly, um, well, modified.

They join the rest of my freebooters - and: HAPPY DAY! They complete my collection of catalogued freebooting sculpts. There are a couple more models to eventually join them, but they are either 3rd party or not in the dedicated freebooter range, or a goblin. And as we all know - goblins don't count :)

Rol Call please :) From the Citadel Miniatures Catalogue section one (the Blue one)

And from the Citadel Miniatures Catalogue Three (the Green one)

And this from the Citadel Miniatures 1998 Annual...

No one needs to mention this guy who I do not have. If anyone has him going for swapsies or cash monies, please get in touch!

Aaaaanyway, whilst painting them I did manage to paint one (1). Single. Solitary. Bike. All on it's own:
I think this brings me up to a full squad of five boys and one nob - which is relieving.

Bike:

And also,
Some grotty gretchin:

A punk, feelin' lucky:
Mind you I have neglected to paint pink/purple onto his nose and knuckles, but hopefully once he's mixed in with the crowd he'll be right at home. I did paint his trousers in freebooter fashion, which might continue with the rest of the grots...

This guys a little sweaty already. I wouldn't count on him to stay in the fight.

This is more like it. Mean, green and with a massive gun.

EXTRAS

This squig is a fan sculpt, although other than that I have no knowledge of its history/maker. I believe it's part of a set - and if anyone has any more info I'd love to know!

This helpful chap. Hopefully he realises that's not a hammer he's carrying...

This king daddy grandfather squig, from knightmare miniatures. Fun fact - I added that 'beauty' spot cos I accidentally botched a thick bit of cream paint there (also just above the left eye brow...) and couldn't really match the green skin colour to cover it up.

Another squig from the Knightmare range

I realise I've neglected to show a pic of all the GW squig sculpts - tune in next month for that extra gravy yo :)
And that's just about it for March. Hopefully see y'all in April with the rest of those flipping bikes. Fingers crossed!

Tom's Space Orks: R&F month (1 of 4) (242 points)

February eh? I hates it forever. Actually, more to the point, I strongly dislike painting these bikers. Anyway....Behold!

I had to do something with their numberplates. I mean - they're right there! Sometimes I panicked and just came up with something lame. Lockdown ZOOM anyone? Anyhow. They done!

Individual pics:

Bossman Nob and sidekick:

The banner will be added during the WILD CARD month. Also, I see now that I've neglected to paint some of the chainsword. That'll be corrected too.

I like the flames on the mudguard of the nob bike, and I think I'll add them to the rest of the unit. I thought about adding some hazard striping on the sword, but in the interest of pushing on I left it. I might add it later...

Well...

That's my model count requirement done, and I am pleased. Although there are some More. Bikes. To. Paint. Flip. Iddy. Flip.

To relieve the hate of painting bikes, I painted these EXTRAS.

(A low model count this month, but mostly I've just spent a lot of time staring at the bikes to paint...)

This 👆 smolboi was not in my initial intro post. Here's a snap of some more EXTRAS models with January's White Dwarf as a date stamp, just in case I paint more! They're squigs from the wonderful Knightmare Miniatures, and also a fan sculpt of the facehugger squig available via ye_alchemist miniatures.
