Nicolas' Chaos Army of Tzeentch - Rank and file Month #2 (450pts)

 Equilibrium

The dad I am needs to be more like a chaos warrior on disk. You know, finding proper balance to fully embrace speed of things passing by.  (Im an engineer, not a psychiatrist)

So here they are, the first 5 chaos warriors of Tzeentch on disks for 450pts.

Painting them made me realize I had not painted armor else then boltgun metal + agrax eartshade in over a year.  Finding the middle between edge armor and the muted colors of the disks was tricky, but in the end, I thought achieving a contrast in texture was the way to go, really emphasing on the separation of the disk and warrior on top.

Definitly Keith Flint - Prodigy Singer

As for assembly, all of warriors were first pined to the disks, which were pined to there base with paper clips, the tip coiled into a ball stuck into the original plastic peg hole. As is, it is wobbly, but adding clay and sticky material with super glue to hide the steel wire also stabilize the hole miniature.

Nathan’s rank and file #2 - more blue horrors

The title says it all really - I managed to finish ten more blue horrors. Seven more and I’m done. But those seven can wait a month as this month I’m working on my leaders for something a bit different. Anyway here they are:

Onto March we go!

Nicolas' Chaos Army of Tzeentch - Monster Month

After a staggering amount of hours for one miniature, I offer you my Tzeentch Hydra, the Spectral Dragon II from Grenadier, also known as Tiamat, the lawful evil goddess of greed, the queen of the chromatic dragons, for the more D&D versed companions!

War hydra - 200pts

That miniature was insane to get through to the level I had invisionned, and although I would still burn 4 more hours to refine the body and base, I am more than pleased with the actual result!

It all started with this beautiful kit I got my hands on during this OWAC planing. A lucky find, brand new, part of a "hobby shelve clearing lot", hidden in a closet for over 3 decades. It struck me, its called a dragon... but its anatomically a wyvern, and an epic lead scultp on top of that. A creature off-putting and unatural, clearly soaked in magic, perfect match for a Tzeentch army.

I attacked this project like a one of a kind, sort of stagging every step to realy feel the milestones passing by.

First, assembly, not a beginners kit at all, parts are heavy and the alloy shrinkage makes the 2 huge body parts leaving a huge crevasse on the back along the spine, or the belly, depending on where you apply pressure. Obviously I went for the back fit.

The mixed plastic and clay base was also an interesting build, which allowed me to easily deal with the miss alignment and mostly hide this flaw.

Building the structure of the base... terrain from the Warcry Catacomb box, I better make proper use of these! Plus these old movement trays are such great massive base!

The plastic sprues I glued at the bottom of the base help minimizing the displacement of the clay when it dries up, so it cracked along the weaker points I left on purpose and the contact line with the model remains intact. Now that the exposed parts have cured some 20 hours with the model in place, i can remove it for the inner part to cure... and the model will sit back in place properly afterward... mixing clay plastic and metal is tricky but I love the process.

The original plan was to paint it exactly in my flamers color scheme, I even considered changing the heads for bird like demons... but that would have been butchery!
I finaly started the base colors like my flamers but went for the standard 5 colors.  I aimed to bring up as highlight/accent the yellow on the blue, the red and the green heads as well as on the back spikes... then use blue highlight on the black and use green as shadow on the white... and the front and back carapace bleached bones on green.  I even kept my wet palette since January so that should go smoothly!

Which got me to the point of the actual painting, each head felt like painting an idependant miniature. It was very challenging, but after hours of grinding, it is done!  Overall, I enjoyed the process as much as the result.  Special mention to that lichen harvest I did in the forest behind one of the campsite I vesited last summer. My wife was delighted. 🤣

And a family photo of the "horde" so far;

Which makes me realize... I realy need a new background! 😅

Nicolas' Chaos Army of Tzeentch - Rank and file Month #1

 Back in the game!

January was a packed month for me with the family... and I saw it coming! So in my head, I needed to start with an easy pick, and one that would let me get back a painting routine.

Here they are, my firt 1260 pts of flamers!

As you can imagine, they do not stack up too well in rank and file on 25mm, and actually this edition of the flamers was not meant to.

They were for me and opportunity to test my color combinations for the disks and the wyvern that will follow... Although I might have gone a bit to much "Toucan Sam Froot Loops" on them 😅.

And here are my 3 favorites zoomed in;

Nicolas' Chaos Army of Tzeentch

As I wrap up 2025, getting the house in order to receive family to celebrate the New Year, I realize shrimp cocktails and bacon rolled sausages are not the first things to come on my mind. Nope, my mind is racing over final touches to the composition of this year's OWAC challenge. You know, priorities!

So here they are, my chosen Tzeentch minions for this years challenge!

General - Hero on disk, leader of the Thrall Warband - 125pts

Heroe on disks - 125pts

Lord of Change - 0pts

1 Thrall warband - 200pts

1 unit of chaos warriors of Tzeentch on disks - 815pts

1 pink horror unit - 1260pts

1 blue horror unit - 0pts

1 flamers units - 1260pts

1 Tzeentch chaos spawn - 25pts

1 hydra - 200pts

I am back in the game with a theme I already visited 4 years ago. I had such a blast creating a full unit of 10 Tzeentch Flamers, which still to this day gives me that feeling of pride for building something I have not seen often.

My main influence for this new part of my Tzeentch cult follows the idea of creating a unit I have never seen before... that yet is possible to play in 3rd edition.  There is that old image of a group Tzeentch warriors on flying disks, which I used to find odd since I grew up with 4th edition, where disks were only meant for heros.

And that is how I convinced myself to build a full 10 warriors of Chaos on flying disks! Every other miniatures in this project are sort of... justifying this main unit.

Selection of miniatures was quite a process, I wanted to get miniatures that matched the disk right away with poses that made sence, plus having fighter types and not straight out sorcerers. These ones made it to the Thrall warband!

Finaly, special mention to the hydra, the Spectral Dragon II from Grenadier, which I plan to paint in the same fiery color scheme than the Flamers. I may even add some green stuff to change the dragon heads into Flamers... time will tell!

Nathan’s daemons of Tzeentch intro post

I wasn’t sure I would sign up to challenge number nine after failing challenge number eight (with a khorne army of all things) but the call went out and here I am. I’ve picked an army I collected for Warhammer the Old World which also fits this theme so I reckon I won’t end up in the field of bones this time - and that army is daemon’s of Tzeentch. The vast majority of the figures are third edition era with a handful of the metal screamers thrown in for good measure which I will count as discs of Tzeentch for the purposes of this challenge. Enough of my crapping on - here are the pics:

A couple of test pieces

Most of the army

Greater daemon and champions

And the artwork to inspire me!

Well there you have it. As I paint up the figures I will work out the points cost although for the horrors I will need to split the values as technically blue horrors had no value in third edition as they arose when a pink horror is slain. It expect it will be well over 3000 points as a Lord of Change alone comes in at 1400 points. That is third edition for you - massively unbalanced but the figures look great.

Chris P's Chaos Space Marines - Rank and File Month 4 - Ten from a Thousand

Chaos sorcerer 52pts
9x Thousand Sons 270pts
3x flamers 27pts
Total 349 Points

The Thousand Sons occupied a peculiar position in 2nd Edition - you could take a small squad of 3-5 as a bodyguard for a sorcerer, or you could a regular squad of 3-10 with no option for a champion of any sort. Technically then, this "classic" line-up of 9 Thousand Sons and a sorcerer is two completely separate units. Most of them are built from the metal upgrade kit from the early 2000's, with a smattering of newer parts, and of course one of the original 1990 sculpts. The squad could take up to three special or heavy weapons, so this was a good chance to use some of the impressive modern flamers.

I have to admit, these were not a favourite unit to paint - a lot of very fiddly details to deal with. Still, I'm happy to have got them finished, and even happier to have completed my third OWAC!

Tom's Chaos Renegades - rank and file 4: 283points

So ... June. The last month of the OWAC.
I should be feeling psyched, getting the last of the required models all finished but instead I have fallen in to a painting doldrum. I thought that maybe making more terrain would shake me out of it so I have made some movement trays a bit more Chaosy with the addition of milliput. Full pics of these next month with the full army pics🙂:

And then also experimented with some rocks made from foam - nice and easy. I've now learned not to put a rock onto another rock - it looks in these cases quite unnatural...

Sorry for the sideways pic. Some computer gremlins won't let me correct it :(

Then a huge portion of this month was put into Other Projects (oh the shame!).

I did manage *some* models though!
Here's a Nurgle marine and his inspired fan sculpt from BeQuest Miniatures 👇

And the corresponding Slaanesh pair 👇

I'm fact I been loving the Tzeentch colour scheme, so I did another pair (again, GW and BeQuest) 👇

I then started on trying to round out the Pink Horror unit, and managed these two, to bring the unit up to Five 👇

Their respective Blue Horrors are currently sat in the base coat awaiting motivations...Hopefully they'll be done for the full army pics...

And then, the groove returned! But only for two miniatures. But daaang, what miniatures!

First up is Festimus from Knightmare Miniatures. I used one of Knightmare's resin Chaos banners to convert him into the Army Standard Bearer. I pointed the resin banner in place and created a tentacle from milliput to help hold it in place. Fingers crossed it never gets dropped! 👇

And now the finale!
Drums roll, trumpets sound!
Behold, the Emperor in Alternate Chaos Colours👇:

I initially thought he'd convert to Slaanesh, so should be Pink to fit in with the rest of my Slaanesh. But, Tzeentch played a strong hand and influenced the other colours. I was really wary of ending up with a model with a scheme I was unhappy with (kinda like the undivided sorcerer), but I really like how vibrant he has come out.
Motivation came from a paint set switch, so he's been painted using the Rogue Hobbies ProAcryl set, and a nod to Louise Sudgen in the prismatic sword blade (although I haven't yet watched the video, but I see it referenced a lot!)
I like the original Eye of Horus on the shoulder pad, and then the GW one on the kneepad to kinda show where the Emperor's allegiance lies...

And that wraps up the final working month of the OWAC! Hopefully before the final army pics are taken I'll be able to muster up the gumption to finish painting the last three BeQuest fan sculpts and their respective originals, and those four Blue Horrors. Unfortunately I have a sinking feeling that that might be too much of an ask, but it's good to have an aim and write it down anyway!

Here's the breakdown:

Many thanks for reading and following along.
This OWAC for me has been the toughest so far.
Congratulations to all the Challengers who pushed on through and gave it their all!
