Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9, March Post (Rank and file #2 - 110points )

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 March Post (Rank and file #2 - 110 points)

Where did the last eight weeks go to?

At the end of February I just didn't make the deadline to submit. I had seven Archers and three Wardancers that were close to being finished, but weren't quite there.

I got a new camera, and played around with that for a couple of days.

In the beginning of March, I went on holiday for a week, tagging along with my wife when she attended a conference in Bergen in Norway.

I decided that, since I had plenty of time to spare, I'd swap out the wardancers and do three more archers instead. I really want to focus on building up my core army of archers, after all...

The cat picked up an infection, or virus, or something, and needed to go to the vet a couple of times and get a course of antibiotics.

I tried out different hair colours on the archers, and didn't like them, so redid the hair on half of them.

I had a busy week at work and skipped some painting nights...

I looked out the leader figures I want to do next month and tried out a couple of colours on them, to find some inspiration.

You get the picture.

With a few days to go in March I was STILL not done with those ten figures.

I had a couple of late nights and slapped some more paint on them.

Are they done? No. Base colours and shading are done. Highlights and metals still need to be done.

Will they do? I guess they'll have to. At least there's no bare metal on display... They pass a basic inspection from the far side of a tabletop.

Another ten archers join the ranks.

For the bookkeeping:

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

For April, I have to be realistic:

I have to focus on a small group of leaders, and finish them off in the first two weeks of the month. Focussing on batches of two or three figures was working, and I need to get back into that rhythm.
I already have to make a start on the last rank-and-file batch in April, if I want any chance of hitting the deadline in May.

I'm teetering on the edge of the field of bones.

Well done to the challengers who are delivering such a lot of well-painted models! You're making it look so easy!

Hope to see you for another instalment next month!

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9, January Post (Rank and file #1 - 110points )

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 January Post (Rank and file #1 - 110 points)

Well, I got off to a really good start in January, and made the most of my holidays - I had the base colours on all my January models within a few days. Plus, I managed to do at least a little painting every day of the month, so the progress was consistent.

I had a few wobbles in the middle of the month. This is a new colour scheme I'm trying, with a 'summer palette' based on a tetradic color combination, with green as the main colour. However, I realised some of the other colours I'd chosen (purples and oranges) weren't really working as well as I'd hoped, and I'd gone with too many complementary colours, so I had a bit of a re-think and re-painted a couple of tunics to make the group a little more coherent. In the end, I managed to scrape through and get the first 10 models finished. Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular, just 10 basic Elf archers.

I'm happy with how they turned out:

Group 1:

Group 2:

And the whole unit together:

Looking at the photos I see a few areas which need a little more work, but considering this is the most minis I've painted in four years, I'll take it. I'm planning on varnishing everything this year too, but I'll wait for a bit before doing a big batch, then flocking the bases.

I think the 'summer palette' worked fairly well. I used three different shades of green. Two worked really well, but I'm not so sure about the darkest green. I might try another shade in February.

The warm reds, browns and yellows worked out pretty well. My grand plan is to use an 'autumnal' palette with my High Elf army, and a 'winter' palette with my Sea Elves. I'm not sure what I'll do for my Dark Elves, but that's something I can worry about later.

I did want to give an impression of age, despite the bright palette, and was planning to do more ageing on the metals. I still might get round to this, as well as weathering the leathers more, but this would be a nice bonus. If I get round to some warriors in the later months of the challenge it should be easier, since there will be more metal and armour on display.

For the bows, I wanted to emphasise that these are the renowned Wood Elf bows, made from the Lornalim tree. I went for a lighter, natural (bone) colour, but I'm tempted to add more highlights, to make them stand out more.

For the bookkeeping:

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

Now, I'm a little worried about being able to keep up the pace I need to complete the OWAC. I didn't have many distractions, was painting a little every day, yet was still cutting it fine to reach the finish line this month. I suspect I'll need to take on some different models in February, either ones with less details, or at least something to break up the monotony of painting archers. I've got a few Wardancers and Bears in the wings. However, I've got to keep reminding myself that my personal goal for this OWAC is to have at least 30 archers done by the end of it...

I'll also try to focus on batches of three figures, aiming to finish them in a week. At least this breaks things up a bit, and might avoid that last-minute sprint for the finish line at the end of the month.

At least our cat is quite happy that I'm joining in the challenge - he's realised I now spend more time than usual sitting still at my painting desk, so has been making the most of it:

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 Introduction Post

Graeme's Wood Elves - OWAC 9 Introduction Post

Back in the OWAC saddle again!

After the embarrassingly swift trips to the Field of Bones in my last few OWAC attempts, I'm back with my Wood Elf army.

If many of the figures look familiar, it's because many were in my line up for OWAC V, and the rest were in my original plan for OWAC VI, before I defected to #teamskaven! Yes, they've been languishing in a cupboard for almost four years. If you're interested, you can check out the posts here:

OWAC V: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2021/12/graemes-owac-v-introduction-post-wood.html

OWAC VI: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2022/12/graemes-owac-vi-introduction-post.html

Hopefully I've learned from some of my previous mistakes - this year I have enough figures fully prepped for the full OWAC, and then some:

My goal for this OWAC is to focus on completing the mandatory 30 archers for a 3rd edition Wood Elf army, and to build from there.

Since OWAC 9 is based on selecting a pice of old GW art and theming the project around it, I'm going for the box art for Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers Regiment of Renown:

In my 30+ years of collecting, I never actually owned a Skarloc RoR box! This year I managed to buy a lot of Wood Elf archers with the front and back covers of the box, which is where I got the photo from. I plan on getting it framed and hung up somewhere for inspiration for the challenge.

I'll not be following the colour scheme too closely, as I'm going for a combination of a summer palette with a weathered and ancient look for these Wood Elves, but it's definitely a good reference to work from.

Now for a closer look at the army.

The bulk of the army will be made up of archers, and archer elites.

Archer unit one:

Archer unit two:

Archer unit three:

Archer unit four, made up of the figures from Skarloc's archers Regiment of Renown, with a small conversion of Glam, to make him look a little more like the illustration on the box. I'll be treating them as regular archers for the challenge, rather than scouts. This means I should be able to hit the compulsory archer minimum number for the force.

Archer unit five:

You'd be forgiven if you're getting bored of seeing Elven archers by now, so there's a few units of non-archers too.

A fairly large unit armed with spears. At this point they only have spears, but I'm looking for suitable shields to add somewhere, to match the 3rd edition army list. If anyone has added shields to these figures, either slung on the back, or attached to the arm, I'd be really interested to see how you did it! My attempts so far haven't looked very convincing.

Beastmaster with bears:

A small unit of Wardancers, armed with two hand weapons. There are a couple of conversions in there, for the sharp-eyed:

Finally, some wizards to lead the army:

I've converted a few of these models, just for some variety, and am quite pleased with how they turned out.

There are a handful of heroes, more infantry troops, and some bonuses in the works, but we'll have to wait and see if I find the time to finish the prep and include them in this year's challenge.

Just for the book keeping, here's an estimate of points for a 3rd edition WFB army, based on what's prepped:

Characters

1 Wood Elf Sylphseer (Level 15 wizard) - (206 points)
Equipped with a horse, and hand weapon

2 Wood Elf Spellsingers (Level 10 wizards) - (236 points)
Equipped with a hand weapon

2 Wood Elf Woodfeys (Level 5 wizards) - (156 points)
Equipped with a hand weapon

1 Wood Elf Guardian Wardancer (Level 10 hero) - (103 points)
Equipped with light armour, and two hand weapons

Total: 691 points

Troops

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

10 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows and hand weapons

10 Wood Elf Guards (+2 missile elite) - (150 points)
Equipped with longbows, light armour, and hand weapons

7 Wood Elf archers - (110 points)
Equipped with longbows, light armour, shields, and hand weapons

5 Wood Elf Glade Runners (scouts) - (80 points)
Equipped with longbows, and hand weapons

20 Wood Elf Warrior Kinband - (180 points)
Equipped (for now) with spears, and hand weapons

1 Wood Elf Beastmaster - (15 points)
Equipped with l
ight armour, and a hand weapon

5 Bears - (100 points)

6 Wood Elf Wardancers - (138 points)
Equipped with light armour, and two hand weapons

Total: 993 points

So, currently not quite enough archers to hit the minimum compulsory number for 3rd edition, but I'm still planning to add some models to the archer units, either with troops, or musicians and standard bearers. If I don't manage that, the Guards will be demoted to regular archers, and I'll update the points values.

It's a bit daunting seeing all these Wood Elves together on my worktop. I'm going to be realistic, and state right from the start that there's no way I'll get all of these painted - I'm just too slow. I'm going to start off painting them in batches of three or four, and see how far I get.

Nice to see some great looking armies in the works for OWAC9. Fingers crossed we make it to the finish line!

Good luck to everyone!

PaulM - Mórr's Wild Hunt - Wrap-Up

The Heart Tree bleeds.

The Heart Tree bleeds, red in the dappled sunlight of the forest.

The Heart Tree bleeds because she is in pain. The forest is in pain. Athel Loren is in pain!

Invaders, intruders, interlopers! They come with axe and they come with fire; and so, the Heart Tree bleeds.

They come with violence and fury, and animal lusts. Raging against all that is true and beautiful; and so, the Heart Tree bleeds.

But she is not defenceless. No, this forest has violence and fury of its own. And deep within its Glades it rises. The Kindreds have come!

They anoint themselves in the blood of the Heart Tree so as they might share its pain as they redouble it upon its enemies. They move, swift and silent as thought, between towering trunks and across mighty boughs. They rise with the creaking of branches in a summer storm, and cracking of earth under the hottest sun.

Athel Loren goes to war!

So, I'm now a two time OWAC veteran eh? Peachy.

It's a been a slog though if I'm honest. Despite only painting a slack handful of miniatures, I'm bloody sick of the sight of them. But still quite proud of the little force I've managed to muddle through regardless.

So what does that final force look like I hear nobody ask? Well, it comes out something like this:

Mórr 'The Slayer' - Wood Elf General                             166pts

Cruath 'The Truth Sayer' - Mage Champion                    121pts

No-Mórr 'The Demoted' - Archer Champion                   56pts

Scarloc - 'The Aged' - Scout Champion                           56pts

5 Scouts - 'The Pine Glades Kindred'                               80pts

15 Archers - 'The Pine Crags Kindred'                            187pts

5 Glade Riders - 'The Kindred of Equos'                        210pts

16 Dryads - 'The Wizened Ones'                                     560pts

Treeman - 'Groth The Gnarled'                                        280pts

TOTAL (sans magic items etc.)                                                      1,716pts

Points as per the 4th Edition army book, though these will mostly see service in 6th Edition and The Old World (where it comes out somewhere around 1,300pts under the same conditions).

So, points wise, a little more than I thought I'd manage. And model wise a little less. I still have bits and pieces I would like to do, but they will have to wait a little while until I'm back in the mood for green...

Anyway - Army Shot and Ansell (RIP) pose. This was taken at this year's BOYL (an appropriate place for an Ansell pose if there ever was one!), thank you to the lady who took it for me, all credit goes to them...but I'm sorry I forgot to ask your name!

And a wee shot of the army as a whole:

Next year? Well, there's that Undead thing I wanted to do...oh and that 2nd ed Khorne Berzerker army...or maybe finish off my Chaos army from my first OWAC (I bought so many knights)...or maybe just chill a year.

Seriously, I'm a glacially slow painter with limited time; this has meant I have painted nothing but these elves for the past seven months. And it is making me reconsider if I want to take part again. But never say never.

Congratulations to all my follow competitors. You've all produced some absolutely stunning forces of which you should be very proud. I hope to see some of them in the flesh some time and maybe we can throw some dice and push little toy soldiers around.

Peace.

Byron's Hippy Wood Elves - Wrap up Post

First things first, I have a few additional models painted up for the wrap-up post.

First, Elrobic Ripesight. He is a wood elf hero. He has been lightly converted from a pointing finger to a hippy peace sign and flowers around his head.

Next, Dolbriele Windprancer, a hero on great eagle. He is also mildly converted to wield a spear from a 4th ed glade rider champion. (When he came into my possession his spear was broken clear off, so this wasn't a conversion of preference so much as necessity.) He rides a grenadier eagle.

Bears. That's it. Just a buncha bears. None of them are citadel bears. They come from a few sources: ral partha, grenadier, foundry. I wasn't able to find the time to paint up some beastmasters.

Finally, I added pennants to my Elven Lords. I really like pennants on cavalry.

Now for the poses with the entire army.

The obligatory Ansell Pose.

Reflections and what not
This year I challenged myself to paint only using cheap craft paints. I was surprised at some of the results I was able to achieve, but I don't think I will willingly go back (unless I want to paint more Wood Elves in matching colors.) The yellow, Orange, and Green colors were frustrating to work with. I found myself doing a lot of cheats by painting the models white and washing surfaces with thinned down paints. I made do and am ultimately happy with the general results. The old craft silver paint on the other hand is the best silver paint I have ever used. Two thin coats and it looks like its burnished aluminum.

There were a lot more models I wanted to paint, but life kept getting in the way. I now have a tub of wood elves for a second wave - monopose archers, wild cats, dryads, spearmen, way watchers etc. One day.

Next year, I have planned an Eldar Pirate army. It's mostly RT and 2nd ed Eldar, with a few 3rd ed Dark Eldar and maybe some 4th ed parts in there. I've got two scratch-build vehicles ready to go. My kids play 4th ed, so I have made a Pirate Eldar Codex so I can use my models with them.

But I might have to bow out of OWAC 8 to focus on sculpting some dwarves and mixed hobbying priorities. (I still owe Quinton his Giant).

Paul and Tom's OWAC VII Wrap Up Post - Wood Elves of Averlorn and the Red Wizards of Thay

OWAC VII is in the bag! This was my 5th challenge and after two years of painting High Elves I set myself the task of painting ALL the Wood Elves* in my lead pile in one. I'd written up two OWACs worth of army lists but I thought that if I stuck to my previous approach of solid prep in advance, early batch painting to get through big units and set in colour schemes and recipes before moving on to more challenging minis, I'd be able to get it done.

There were definitely ups and downs along the way, some paint jobs that didn't quite come off the way I wanted them too, and the classic OWAC last minute switch to Leader month to avoid having to use my first ever mulligan. In short, it genuinely felt like a challenge at times and that is exactly what makes the OWAC feel so worthwhile when you complete it! :)

I also found more inspiration from nature and the seasons than in any previous project, and grew more confident in 'sketching' with paint and less afraid to experiment and risk mistakes, knowing that I can always correct them if needs be. Another year where the OWAC helped me grow as a painter :)

It was also one of the most nostalgic projects I've ever experienced and this definitely helped keep me going through the slow patches. The core of the army was inherited from my younger brother in the mid 90's, around the same time that the Wood Elves made such an impact in the D&D campaigns I played with friends, and influenced characters who are still legend today. Some of the old school white plastic fantasy regiments originally belonged to my BiL and others were added as I got into 'Oldhammer' about ten years ago.

The deep dive into Trish Carden's sculpts was particularly rewarding, reminding me of when I met the lady herself at BOYL 2019 (she is every bit as lovely and warm and nerdy as you would imagine! :D) and all the other friends I made there. Another year when the OWAC has brought some joy when work has been a drag and I needed some escapism :)

So I guess what I'm really saying is thank you. Thank you to everyone who takes part and makes it such a special even in the hobby calendar, and thank you to everyone who stepped up to help run this year's challenge, especially Byron who bravely took on the mantle of herding this large troupe of cats through months of hobby prep, painting, and perseverance!

Without the OWAC and the community I wouldn't have the same level of motivation and structure, I wouldn't have another army completed, my pile of shame would be as large as ever, and most importantly I'd have far less excuse to buy yet more minis and hobby supplies! ;)

In terms of Old World geography, I always envisaged my Wood Elves as not being from Athel Loren, and I still think some of my core units (late summer theme) as my Avelorn contingent for my wider Elven host. As I've mentioned in some earlier posts, I've come to think of my WEs as representing more diverse wild and rural communities and landscapes beyond the cities and regional heartlands of Ulthuan represented by the High Elf units.

As a result you won't see Orion or Ariel in my army. Although I do own a copy of Orion, I just don't like the sculpt and just don't see it fitting with my concept of Wood Elves, so he has been set aside for a future project... but I do have one more mini to share as a grand finale!

The "Sisters of Twilight" version of the Wood Elf Forest Dragon... Well, I can certainly see why not everyone is a fan of this model! I started writing a cathartic list of all the things I really don't like about this sculpt but that just isn't the note I want to finish on. Instead I'm going to focus on the awesome power of the OWAC to get you through projects that you fall out of love with, the liberating feeling of allowing some things to be "good enough, but not perfect" and the lessons that I learned with this one.

Firstly, if I ever painted this again (I wont!) I would reverse the green and brown portions of the Dragon (but probably keep the green-brown of the wings). There are too many places where the vines snaking in and out of the scales meant I needed to paint green on green and this doesn't let the details pop quite as much as they should. I also think it would be far more interesting to have a mossy green underbelly and a rich variation of polished woody browns for the scales, letting them look like tree bark. It kind of makes sense in my head now as how a Forest Dragon might camouflage themselves in their natural habitat and I think I would have been able to do more with the model if I had reversed the greens and browns. You live and learn!

I came round to the idea of the two riders. I painted them up as Way Watchers and would probably just count them as a single Hero in an army list. I didn't like the suggested positioning of one of them on the Dragon's head though, this looked lopsided on a model already slightly unbalanced in it's mounting on the base so shifting one of the riders o the back made much more visual sense to me. It also risked distracting from the detail of the Dragon's head and overall I left the riders very rough so that they don't steal the show from the Dragon.

In terms of colour scheme, the green and brown and Way Watcher riders tie to that core them of my army, with just enough dark red on one of the imps and the Dragon's tongue to evoke the accent colour of the core units without it dominating (this would look too much like the Caledor Dragon in my HE army).

I used a rainbow inspired set of colours for the imps, deliberately calling back to the earlier Wardancer troupe (maybe this is where they take some inspiration from for their unit colours?) and emphasising their fey rather than natural forest creatures. The orange-brown of the claws and horns also hopefully ties to the winter/Chrace elements of my combined elven forces, as the orange gorse flowers on the base are also intended to do however I worry when you look at it now these have actually drained some of the orange away from the horns and claws as they seem to pop slightly less in the finished model.

Never mind... On the whole I'm quite happy with the basing, which took me slightly out of my comfort zone as I knew it desperately some wood and foliage elements to sell the forest Dragon theme, but these are not basing materials I normally work with. A few different height and colour variation tufts along with the flowers make it seem like the Dragon might be bursting out of the edge of the woods onto the battle field, or maybe the added fey elements of the watcher stones, spindly toadstools and a lone skull give a 'fairy glen' type feel?

I was playing around with some left over green stuff one day and ended up with a strange little mole-toad thing with no eyes and massive nostrils and toothless maw. I liked the idea of adding some wildlife to the base so I painted it up a bit like Fizzgig from Dark Crystal and hid him under the log. Job done. :)

Close up of random Wood Elves I already had painted/re-painted. Including the mysterious mage with the terrible milliput cloak bought 2nd Hand from the long closed Captain Sci-Fi in St. Nicks Market, Bristol. The nostalgia is strong with this one.

Also, I swapped out the Blunicorn for the more Wood Elfy one I already had painted.

Why yes, that is a Spevna Studios design from OWAC's very own Mustafa Bekir on my 90's style white long sleeve T-shirt. Award yourself 15 Oldhammer points for noticing and then go and order one yourself!

Plans for next year?

* OK, it wasn't quite ALL of my Wood Elves, just like it turned out it wasn't quite ALL of my High Elves in OWAC V and VI.

When you've been hoarding for this long and building up massive armies you obviously end up with some waifs and strays along the way, damaged and unloved minis, random bits and bobs that don't quite fit, things you swore you had and searched for high and low but must have lost and then turn up again just after you finish the bloody challenge... you now how it goes.

But don't worry! I've got plans for them. OWAC VIII means "No Elf Left Behind!" but other than that I'll leave you in the dark ;)

Tom's Bony Bit:

I made it all the way to the end, my first competed OWAC!

Throughout painting my army I have always included the three layers of red to give them the feeling of threat of the Red Wizards of Thay and their undead menacing hordes. The purple is the colour I have chosedn to be the colour of their magical essence. I think all the colours I have used give the army a good look, like they belong together.

Thanks to everyone who supported me, As a first time OWACer it has definitely encouraged me to do this again next year. I found the task of having to stick to it over the months challenging because there were some ups and downs, such as having to paint over bits of models that had the wrong colour, or fixing broken models, or waiting to paint the things I really wanted to paint...

Sadly, just after I took the wrap up picture I dropped the whole tray of minis while putting them away and had a lot of broken models to deal with - luckily it was after the pictures but it was a real pain!

But... I really enjoyed taking part in the group challenge and I think everyone who completed has succeeded in the task of doing a great OWAC!

This is Legolas, I painted him up as a reward after completing the OWAC. I'm really happy with hoe he came out. I took inspiration from his outfit in the movie. I used Vallejo Hull Red, Citadel Mournfang Brown, and MP Leather Brown, with Army Painter Strong Tone to get the right look.

Thanks to Tom Young for the Secret Santa mini - it was much appreciated and I enjoyed painting him.

Plans for next year?

I really hope I can take part again next year. I'm looking forward to painting something up for the secret santa entry mini, does anyone like Orcs?

I've been busy building more skeletons for next year as I will be adding to my undead horde. I'm also thinking about adding zombies/ghouls, and some more cavalry.

A new style GW Zombie Dragon bolsters the flank!

Bonus pic with Undead Chariot, Necromancer, and Skeleton Frost Giant (proxy unit filler for 8-10 skeletons)

The whole stinky crew together!

That's it from us for OWAC VII - massive congratulations to everyone who made it to the end. It's a genuinely lovely thing to be a part of. Looking forward to doing it all again with you next year!

Paul and Tom :)

Mariano Sánchez - Wood Elves - Wrap up

This is the end...

I forget to do a pic with my army...

This is a very special OWAC for my because is the last one for Wood elves. Four OWACS later, the journey is over. Well, I would like to say that the adventure of painting a massive Wood Elves army is completed but it is not, ´cos I still have 20 dryads to be repainted (thankfully not enough for a fifth Wood Elves OWAC).

First of all, I have to thank the OWAC initiative, without this amazing project, I´m pretty sure I would have never finished my army. So THANK YOU for all the support, the comments, the work behind the web...

As I did last year, lets do a review
