Jaakko and Rugluk Backstabba- The Tragedy of Rugluk - Wrap-up

Epilogue

Deep below the craggy hills a small cavern echoed with laughter. Not orcish roars or goblin sniggers-this was sharper, clearer.

Three gnomes sat around a bubbling cauldron, mugs in hand, snorting into their beards.

“And then-and then-he stabbed his boss over a fake prophecy! Hah!”

The eldest gnome, Tobbin Flickerflint, wiped a tear from his eye and waved a hand over the bubbling pool. In its surface shimmered Rugluk, raging across empty dwarf tunnels with a warband too tired to argue.

“I told you the snake illusion would sell it,” said Primsy Gloomwhistle, and took a sip of mushroom wine. “Bit of hissing, a few glowing eyes, some destiny nonsense-works every time.”

“What was it we called him?” chuckled Jibbin. “The Chosen One?”

“Might be our best one yet,” said Tobbin.

They raised their mugs and toasted.

“To da Backstabba!”

The cauldron flickered and showed Rugluk again-this time yelling at returning goblin scouts.

The gnomes howled.

“Ohhh, we should definitely do goblins next!”

And here we are! The painting marathon we call Old World Army Challenge is once again grinding to a momentary halt. And what a ride it has been!

This has easily been my favourite season so far, as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed exploring the classic Orc and Goblin range with a paintbrush in hand. The events that set this project into motion happened during the Leader Month of Season Six, when I painted a banner inspired by the designs in the O&G section of Warhammer Armies. I already had a Chaos Thug Musician wielding an instrument that seemed to be stolen from my Dwarf army (Ronald the Farter, painted just before Season Six), and I felt I needed to paint the Orc army that the banner belonged to.

And here it is-the siege-laying horde of Orcs and Goblins led by Rugluk Backstabba! Or at least the first part of it. This is more than I hoped to achieve and I'm really happy with how things are going. I did expect to have painted some Goblin Wolf Riders by now, though. I actually started both units on January 1st but only managed to finish the wolves themselves. I’m hoping to get them done during the off-season and present them in the intro post of next season-alongside a Snotling Pump Wagon that didn’t quite make the finish line either.

Rugluk Backstabba and the Boyz-my favourite unit in the army

I kept painting more models throughout July, as I had a 3rd edition Fantasy Battle game lined up for the end of the month. I needed to meet the minimum requirements from Warhammer Armies and to hit the 3000-point mark we had agreed on. With a bit of help from some Giants borrowed from Slargash’s army, I managed to reach both goals-and we had a great game to top it all off.

I painted a unit of Stickas, six Fanatics, beefed up the existing unit of Arrer Boyz, and added an Orc Shaman on a Warboar.

I love Goblin Fanatics-these sculpts are oozing with character. My favourite sculpts are saved to the next season, though, and I hope to dedicate a full month to them.

The Stickas

As mentioned above, I painted five more models for this unit, bringing the total to 19. I also received an Orc from John R that fits the unit nicely and finished a spare Harboth I’d used for skin tone tests before the challenge began, bringing the unit up to 21 Orcs overall. Naturally, only 19 will count toward the challenge tally.

Orc Shaman on Warboar. The model comes with a banner pole, but I didn’t have time to add it yet. It’ll need pinning and a bit more work, so I’ll come back to it later.

This month in points:

Some pictures of the army:

I really like Pump Wagon models and how they work in the game. I also enjoy painting the little guys themselves and hope to do more of that next season. I brought some daylight lamps to my gaming group's space to better capture their slightly paler skintone (and colours in general) in photos.

The Harboth shown partly here was one of my early skin tone tests. I’m thinking of giving a second one a matching look and tying them together as brothers in the background lore.

I really like the command group in Grom's Goblin Guard-they're all fantastic sculpts.

The picture isn’t great, but I wanted to include the baggage in this post since, even though it wasn’t the first one I started painting, it’s the first one I’ve actually finished.

And the army in points:

The Owac adjusted model count has been applied to the Shaman and the baggage.

What next? Well, I have some half-painted miniatures from this challenge that I need to finish, as mentioned earlier. I also hope to explore the siege theme further in the future, but we’ll see what form that takes. Originally, I had planned to fix and paint a Mighty Fortress during a future Wild Card month, but the current idea is to tackle it during the off-season instead. I’m hoping to get a Warhammer Siege game under my belt sooner rather than later.

And that's it, I guess. As mentioned above, I had a lot of fun this season, but I definitely don’t mind taking it a bit easier over the next few months. I hope to return for Season IX with Rugluk and his army as there are still plenty of units, monsters, and character models I can’t wait to paint!

Wishing you all the best in the meantime. My condolences to the fallen comrades, and big congrats to the challengers who made it to the finish line!

Tom's Orcs and Goblins - Rank & File #2

February - the shortest month. What a time to push on and do....
The other unit I was dreading - the night goblin archers! In the end, the only thing that's been saving me throughout the batch paint has been the singular thought that once it's done, I never have to do it again...

Anyway, I did do a few testers for this unit, although frustratingly I didn't take any pictures except this one👇

The one on the left is using Black Stallion by GreenStuffWorld, and the one on the right is by using two coats of Citadel Black Templar contrast paint. I preferred the bluer, deeper tone of the contrast paint, so deep breath and begin the batch paint!
For future reference, here again is a breakdown of paints used:

PA = ProAcryl
VMC = Vallejo Model Colour
C = Citadel
AK = Ak Interactive

Skin: C Moot Green, C Warp Lightning, PA Bismuth Yellow, PA Bright Ivory, C Leviathan Purple
Black: C Black Templar, PA Bright Ivory, AK Glaze Medium
Brown: PA Dark Orange Brown, C Fireslayer Flesh, PA Bright Ivory
Red: PA Orange Red, AK Volcanic Yellow, sometimes added PA Bright Ivory
Yellow: AK Volcanic Yellow, C Iyanden Yellow, PA Bismuth Yellow, AK Bright Ivory
Arrow shafts: C Wildwood, PA Bright Ivory
Metals: V Metallic Black, VMC Silver
Grass: AK Grass Green, PA Bismuth Yellow, PA Bright Ivory
Base rim; C XV-88
Varnished with two coats, brush-on, of Vallejo Premium Colour Satin.

The black is a single layer of contrast Black Templar, highlighted up twice by adding the ProAcryl Bright Ivory, then rewashed with a watered down Black Templar and a touch of glaze medium as i thought that would help. Finally rehighlighted. Phew!
In retrospect, I think that there was no need to highlight in-between washes, and I should have just saved the all highlighting for last...

There is a small edge of strapping, peeking out from the right of the arrow flights, which I chose to ignore in favour of ease.

And here they all are together! No champion, but a banner and musician.

I feel that I could freehand a symbol on the ...uh... cymbal, so I might do that before the end of the challenge if motivation strikes!

The banner bearer. Well, more of an Icon Bearer I guess! There's a very slim chance I might add a streamer to the banner pole later. I'm thinking just black and white checks, with a very simple yellow moon motif, or just banding, towards the banner pole at the moment.

And what self respecting night goblin unit is ever fielded without a fanatic or three hidden in the ranks?

This one's got a beandy chain. I'm very fortunate that it's not broken off as I'd have no idea how to fix it. I've a few in the box which are missing their - ahem - balls, so if you have any advice, please let me know! The slight bluish tint to the metal ball is due to a watered down wash of Black Templar.

I like this one. You can see that I've painted the shoes black, when really I think red would have been a better colour!

Here's the duplicate one. I've given him dags instead of checks...

And that's it for this month. I'm feeling super relieved that the two units that I really wasn't looking forward to painting are now finished, and I can move onto the much bigger orcs. Hopefully the motivation holds for them!!!

Here's the round up:

Ian McMurray's Goblins - Goblin Fanatics (Wildcard month - 60 points)

«It takes some balls to live life to the fullest.»

                                            - Brock Lesnar

Last month of the challenge. As my army was already complete, everything done in June was just extra. So, being quite busy this past month, I only found time to add two Goblin Fanatics to my army. I did some retouching on a few pieces though, mainly the chariots. I tried to paint some banners for the standard bearers but the result was quite ugly. So, sadly, still no banners in my Goblin army at the moment.

  • Grom and Niblet in chariot: 257 points
  • 10 goblin wolf riders with bow: 100 points
  • 10 goblin wolf riders with spear and shield: 110 points
  • 2 goblin chariots with scythed wheels: 180 points
  • 20 Night Goblins: 60 points
  • 5 Trolls: 325 points
  • 2 Goblin Fanatics: 60 points

TOTAL: 1092 points

Next month will be the wrap-up and the official army pose.

Cheers!

Mike's Waagh Grotgut (300pts)

Rank and File month 1.

Well January is upon us, and as I have in past challenges I focused on getting my largest block of troops done first. In the 1st challenge I did goblin infantry for only one unit of my army (mind you I'm not a crazy person doing blocks of 60 gobbos). So for this month I did 2 units of Night Goblin archers and 6 fanatics, which was more than I planned on but I got a good start early in the month. I apologize for the photo quality, not much good natural light lately here in New England.

My night goblins are the very tiny Kev Adams sculpts with two C12 goblins mixed in. I love the smaller goblin style, it seems more fitting when compared to the orc sculpts of the period.

Despite the tendency to lay havoc to my own units, I find it hard to not take at least one unit of fanatics in every army. The chance of magnificent chaos across my enemies lines though rare are almost irresistible. The fanatics are marauder and 4th edition sculpts which are so much easier to play with than the newer giant tippy fanatics.

So month one in the books and on to the short month of February!

Jaeckel and the Lost Crusade - Month IV (201 points)

Even if doomed and meant to be lost in the sands of Araby, my pilgrim army needed some shooters: April will be the black powder's month!

First, my favorite unit: 5 Marauder Miniatures MM65 flagellants and one Citadel fanatic converted into Sandsjaeger (the equivalent of bergsjaegers, with handguns instead of long bows). The original idea comes from this illustration, showing Gerontius, the Blind Priest, armed with a gigantic black powder weapon:

Gerontius, by John Blanche (Blood on the Reik)
For those who know the original miniatures, I've simply replaced the flails and clubs by bits from various boxes (flagellants, free company and handgunners).

And the wild bunch of crazy hermits:

For the second regiment, I should have stuck to the original plan, and paint the beggars following Pieter the Pious. Instead, I've bought a nice (but unfortunately oversized) cannon produced by Lead Adventures miniatures for the Bruegelburg range, and re-used some medieval oldies for the crew (you can still find them on Wargames Foundry website).

Hugh, Godfrey and Wart are respectively the loader, gunner and crewman of the Citadel C22 imperial cannon. They look really small compared to the bell converted into a mortar, thanks to the ingenuity of the bombardier-monk (the Philosopher designed by Aly Morrison for Talisman).

C22 - Godfrey
C22 - Hugh
C22 - Wart
TL9 - Philosopher
The whole team around the warmachine:

To conclude this fourth month, we have:
- 6 Sandsjaeger (count as Bergjaeger) with standard bearer: 7 x 13 = 91 points
- 1 cannon and the 3-man crew: 60 points
- 1 Level 5 bombardier: 50 points
- TOTAL: 201 points

See you in May!
